Cuttino Mobley Might Hang Up His Sneakers

by Marcel Mutoni

Cuttino Mobley’s career in a Knick uniform may be over well before it ever began.

Due to a heart condition, Mobley is reportedly strongly considering retirement from the NBA. The 33-year old, who failed a physical when he was traded to New York last month, could make the announcement as early as tomorrow.

From the NY Post:

If Mobley, obtained in the Zach Randolph trade from the Clippers, retires, it would free open a roster spot and save the Knicks about 75 percent of the $18. 9 million left on his pact because of insurance. Mobley, who gets all the money, was obtained more for his contract that expires after next season than for his game.

According to the source, Mobley helped initiate the extra testing following his failed physical. “He’s not really focused on basketball, his main concern is his health,” the source said.

Mobley, best remembered for his role (alongside Steve Francis) on those absurdly entertaining Rockets teams at the turn of the century, was in the midst of his 12th season in the League. Cuttino has a career average of 13.7 points per night.

Here’s to hoping that things work out for him health-wise.

    Damn.

12 years isn’t a bad career, and he still gets paid, so maybe retirement isn’t such a bad idea. He’s made his money, entertained the fans, and has his whole life ahead of him. Best wishes for his health; good luck Cat.

If he hangs it up, I raise my glass to him.

Did anyone see that show on Bravo with the young real estate agents? Mobley was looking for a rental and his assistant was the biggest b*tch I’ve ever seen. I want him to quit playing just so that she’s out of a job.

another dead cat on the road to LeBronism

  • Tom Posted: Dec.4 at 10:47 am
I don’t get this. He was playing steady minutes on the Clips before this trade and the 8 seasons before that. An enlarged heart doesn’t just come out of nowhere….Unfortunately the only reason i’m so bothered by this is because he’s on my fantasy squad, does that make me a bad person?

steve francis had heart problems with the knicks too. he lost his on the bench.

  • riggs Posted: Dec.4 at 11:24 am
    I wish i can retire at 33

  • Captain America Posted: Dec.4 at 11:28 am
Sad indeed. Why wasn’t this condition addressed earlier in his career. They do take extensive physical examinations each year, no?

  • awesomepossum Posted: Dec.4 at 11:34 am
so the two BFF ended their career with Knicks. how fitting.

  • collin Posted: Dec.4 at 11:35 am
he had a good career. too bad he couldn’t win more games.

  • Co Co Posted: Dec.4 at 11:36 am
They didn’t start testing for these sorta extreme heart conditions until after Jason Collier died I think. Either way, I’m glad they caught it and I wish him well.

  • Fredo Posted: Dec.4 at 11:39 am
Shame that he goes like this. Cuttino was always one of those players I kept waiting to see blow up big.

  • RV Posted: Dec.4 at 11:53 am
i thought players had to pass their physical for a trade to go through? Or do heart conditions not count?

  • collin Posted: Dec.4 at 11:54 am
i hate to see him leave like this. he was one of those guys that was always consistent. he could get 20 points on any night

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Dec.4 at 12:00 pm
    Meow.

  • joe Posted: Dec.4 at 12:32 pm
I think it was about that time for him to call it quits. I mean he was really starting to bald.

  • Moose Posted: Dec.4 at 1:12 pm
I hate when things like this happen. I am sincerely sorry for Mobley. Good luck outside of hoops if it has to come to that, Cuttino.

  • LexaB Posted: Dec.4 at 1:28 pm
Always makes me feel bad when a b-ball player is fighting for his health. Good luck to Cut and if he hands up his sneakers, all the best for him in his future

  • j Posted: Dec.4 at 2:43 pm
Good, now he can run off with Franchise and start a life together.

  • illydiva Posted: Dec.4 at 3:21 pm
This is sad news, but I hope the condition was detected while it’s treatable. Some have not had the opportunity. What’s this I hear about Rodney Rodgers being paralyzed in an ATV accident?

  • witness Posted: Dec.4 at 3:38 pm
i always wanted to see him go back to the rockets.

  • witness Posted: Dec.4 at 3:38 pm
    this is sad.

  • roger Posted: Dec.4 at 3:44 pm
good luck cat! even though i’m a laker fan i saw u put ur heart on the line everytime i had a chance to watch a clipper game!! best wishes! go lakers !

  • Hursty Posted: Dec.4 at 5:50 pm
Best wishes Cat. You gave everyone great memories in H-Town and those who supported the Rockets. Hopefully your career ends on your own terms though…

  • Roy Posted: Dec.4 at 6:05 pm
Much respect to Cat. Best wishes… :D

  • Sesa Posted: Dec.4 at 7:13 pm
Man, I was hoping the guy ended up winning ring with Lakers or maybe Spurs but I guess he had a good run and had a nice ilustrious career.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Dec.4 at 7:44 pm
Best of luck to Cuttino Mobley. He has had a great career. Although I would love to see him play again, the most important thing for him right now is that he maintains his health.

  • jose Posted: Dec.4 at 11:26 pm
focus on the health cat.i wouldnt want to see u go down on the floor .get better and if u retire. u had a good career

  • D12FSU Posted: Dec.4 at 11:51 pm
big respect for mobley, he was great when orlando got him, they were stupid for trading him at the time

  • nick Posted: Dec.5 at 12:38 am
As a houstonian and huge fan of those turn of the century rockets teams, this makes me really, really sad. I enjoyed 3 years of an offense that was entirely fast breaks, and francis/mobley isos/PnRs and 2 man games. Good times. Except for how Mo Taylor was our 3rd best player. That wasn’t good.

  • chintao Posted: Dec.5 at 3:00 am
@ RV ==> The Knicks waived further examination of Mobley’s condition in order to rush the trade through. Essentially, as the above article points out, they just wanted Mobley’s expiring contract (not his game).

  • Big Mike Posted: Dec.5 at 5:12 pm
Hang em up. Health is far more important than ball!!! You got paid, live you life!

  • santela Posted: Dec.5 at 11:34 pm
i agree with ya nick, gd times man… ppl think i only like the rockets cuz im asian n there’s Yao, but thats just cuz they werent there when stevie n cat was rocking the stadium. gd times…

  • [...] SLAM: All things considered, how would you rate what the Knicks have done so far this year? MD: Good. I think we’ve gotten blindsided by a couple of things. We didn’t get Mobley [Cuttino] done yet so hopefully that will work. And we’ve had two key injures with Nate Robinson and Jared Jeffries. I think that once we get a full compliment of players and get some luck, we’ll be OK. [...]

^ That “Da’ Nile ain’t just a river in Egypt…”-quote is getting alot of play these days.
