George Karl Believes He’s Coaching an MVP Point Guard

by Marcel Mutoni

I think it’s fair to say that George Karl is enjoying the Chauncey Billups Experience. I think it’s even fair to say that he’s ecstatic about it. And why shouldn’t he be? Prior to last night’s loss against the Spurs, Denver had won 12 of 15 since it acquired Billups in the trade for Allen Iverson.

George Karl has been so impressed by Chauncey’s effect on his team, that he’s already campaigning for his point guard to grab some hardware by season’s end.

From the Denver Post:

“The trade,” Nuggets coach George Karl said, “had a very positive karma, from wherever you want to stand — from a fan standpoint, from an organization standpoint, from a coaching standpoint, from a locker room standpoint. Every place, there is a karma that’s good. I think MVP candidates are those type of guys.”

“It’s not that they’re the best player — it’s that they’re the most valuable player.”

Billups, a former Finals MVP, has no doubt been spectacular in his return to Denver, and could very well contend for the award. He’s the main reason why the Nuggets are off to their best start in three decades. But a 16-game stretch, no matter how scintillating, does not an MVP make.

The season is still in its infancy; let’s wait until March (at the very earliest) before we start counting the votes.

true dat but the more timely question becomes which point guards make the western all start team? cp3, deron, tp and chauncey are all no brainers (in my mind), but how often are there four point guards on an all start team?

  • Gheorghe "Ghita" Muresan Posted: Dec.5 at 9:11 am
You give a cartoon and you get a real player,a proven winner. I guess this is what they call “a steal”…

  • Theo Papaloukas Posted: Dec.5 at 9:12 am
You give a cartoon and you get a real player,a proven winner. I guess this is what they call “a steal”…..

  • Theo Papaloukas Posted: Dec.5 at 9:19 am
it would be interesting to hear Michael Curry’s view on the subject…By the way: exactly as i wrote the day of the trade here, the Pistons went immediatelly near 50% territory(7-6) after they got our cute “ANSWER”….

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Dec.5 at 9:21 am
He *is* coaching an MVP point guard.

  • Mo Charlo Posted: Dec.5 at 9:22 am
    J.R. Smith for MVP.

  • Theo Papaloukas Posted: Dec.5 at 9:23 am
how do you like “Ghita”…? He is our only NBA export to this day…(and it will remain this way for some time ,judging by the talent i see here…)

  • Justin Walsh Posted: Dec.5 at 9:29 am
George Karl. Fair weather fan #1.

  • Simon S.Y Lawy Posted: Dec.5 at 9:29 am
he deserve to coach … just joking.

  • Simon S.Y Lawy Posted: Dec.5 at 9:30 am
    he needs to coach starbury.

  • namik Posted: Dec.5 at 9:30 am
This is what they call the “Honeymoon period”

  • matt the jazz fan Posted: Dec.5 at 9:31 am
pistons are doing this with their eyes on 2010. they took a gamble and - on the basis of the admittedly small sample of 13 games - they lost, as far as 08-09 is concerned…

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.5 at 9:40 am
    Matt: Um, no.

  • Clockwork Posted: Dec.5 at 9:41 am
    Damn. Karl really hated Iverson

  • Theo Papaloukas Posted: Dec.5 at 9:43 am
@matt…:…yeah,you should have read what the kids wrote on the day of the trade. Some of them said that now the Pistons have a chance to go all the way (no kiding, seriously). And they took no gamble at all. Joe Dumars (or anyone who has an idea about winning in real bball for that matter)knew from the start that you can go nowhere with the cartoon but it was great for salary cup reasons..of course he could not say something like this publicly….

  • Bryan Posted: Dec.5 at 9:44 am
Can you be overrated in the same way twice in the same career?

  • neaorin Posted: Dec.5 at 9:48 am
My RSS reader made me read the title as “George Karl Believes He’s Coaching”. So what else is new, I thought.

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.5 at 9:49 am
This place gets more moronic by the day.

  • Theo Papaloukas Posted: Dec.5 at 9:49 am
@Bryan….:ask the Suns, New Jersey and N.York or you can ask the Sixers and Denver (cause i am sure Detroit knew what they were getting..).

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Dec.5 at 9:57 am
I anxiously await the continual stream of Karl bashing comments. I heard this exact quote on a radio show he did yesterday. As a proud believer in kharma, i loved that he continually used that term. Last night aside, it has been true to form! TAD, sorry, I’ll stop commenting….

  • Chris Clarke Posted: Dec.5 at 9:59 am
Call me crazy, but didn’t the Nuggets win like 50 games last season? How much better is Chauncey going to make them, 54-58 wins at best? Would that make him an MVP candidate?

  • Justin Walsh Posted: Dec.5 at 9:59 am
Cub, I am glad I’m not the only person noticing Karl’s bash fest on AI. AI isn’t the first player to have that issue, however. George Karl plays more favorites than a high school football coach in a small town. If he doesn’t personally love the guy, he can’t deal professionally and eventually the guy gets traded away.

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.5 at 9:59 am
Ha Cub, you know I respect your opinion.

  • Theo Papaloukas Posted: Dec.5 at 10:05 am
@Chris Clarke….:you have to have in mind that Nuggets last PG was A.I…is like divorcing the ugliest-worst woman in the world and getting a new girlfriend: you’re gonna thing she is a top model. This is what Karl is going through now…

  • Theo Papaloukas Posted: Dec.5 at 10:06 am
Did you know that Karl has coached Real Madrid…?

  • matt the jazz fan Posted: Dec.5 at 10:10 am
    @Tad: Um, why not?

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Dec.5 at 10:14 am
Justin, that was misread. I meant the bashing of Karl by our readers…… Although, Karl’s handling of AI through the media following the trade was one of my few issues with him. He does not have the control over this team that most people believe (ie that trade power.)
Chris, if the Nuggets win 55 games that is an increase of 10% which is pretty huge in this league.

  • Justin Walsh Posted: Dec.5 at 10:16 am
fair enough Cub, your knowledge of Denver outranks me without question.

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.5 at 10:16 am
So you are telling me the Pistons are done for this year, Matt?

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.5 at 10:17 am
The Broncos still suck tho ;)

  • matt the jazz fan Posted: Dec.5 at 10:26 am
I’m saying they lost their gamble.
ie they thought (or said they thought) that the one-year infusion of energy called AI could help them make it out of the ECFinals.
But by the (again admittedly limited) looks of it, they’ll struggle to make it back *into* the ECFinals.
Cleveland and Boston seem like the class of the conference (same caveat applies).
So not “done”, just worse rather than better off.
    Your thoughts?

  • Spaceship Jay Posted: Dec.5 at 10:45 am
Wait, George Karl is coaching nothing. Chauncey is coaching Denver. Be clear.

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.5 at 10:55 am
My thoughts? 13 games is my thoughts. Today is December 5th is my thoughts. We have beaten the Lakers, Spurs (at full strength), and Cavs since acquiring AI.

  • matt the jazz fan Posted: Dec.5 at 11:09 am
and lost versus minnessota & at new jersey… agree (and stated a few times in fact) about the small sample. all i’m talking about is an impression.
mine is that they won’t make it into the ECF.
    yours?
ps don’t take it personal though, please…

  • Allenp Posted: Dec.5 at 11:13 am
    Thank you Tad.
When motivated and competing the Pistons appear good. My only concern is how badly they got smashed by Boston the last two times. That is troubling considering that is the team to beat in the East.
Last year’s Denver team had the organization’s best record in the past 20 years. Sure they were maddening and didn’t reach their potential, but I think that had to do with mismatched personnel, poor player rotations and the coach quitting.
I’m glad Chauncey is succeeding, but I haven’t failed to notice that the Nuggets seem to lose to top tier teams. If they win more than 50 games, more power to them.

  • Allenp Posted: Dec.5 at 11:13 am
    Matt
The Pistons could lose in the second round, or they could make it to the Finals. Depends on how they do with effort. I think they still have shot and McDyess will only help that.

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.5 at 11:20 am
Matt: You stated the Pistons were “done in 08-09″ and now you are saying they won’t win the ECF. So if that is your interpretation of “done” then I have a list of teams that would take that offer right now. And it isn’t a small list. With that said, I can agree with me being a Pistons fan that I won’t be happy unless we make it to the Finals. I’m just disgusted with the amount of people who claim the Pistons are sudden failures. That is moronic.

  • matt the jazz fan Posted: Dec.5 at 11:24 am
    nononononono
i what is said was (and i quote) ”
pistons are doing this with their eyes on 2010. they took a gamble and - on the basis of the admittedly small sample of 13 games - they lost, as far as 08-09 is concerned…
” like you i believe that if you don’t make the finals or win it when you have the talent to it’s not a succesful year. but no they’re not done for ‘08. i said they made the deal with more focus on ‘10 than on ‘08.
    big diffenrence…

  • matt the jazz fan Posted: Dec.5 at 11:25 am
ie it’s the gamble ion ‘08 that they lost, not the full ‘08 season!

  • matt the jazz fan Posted: Dec.5 at 11:25 am
    *difference*

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Dec.5 at 11:28 am
The final record won’t be the telling thing—after all, they had AI to start the season. It’s all about the winning percentage with CB, uh, 7. Also, I don’t see the Pistons beating the Celtics or the Cavs this year. Although to be honest, I didn’t see them beating either team WITH Chauncey either.

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.5 at 11:29 am
Same thing. You are saying they lost on the gamble THIS YEAR. They haven’t lost anything. It is only December the 5th. Talk about jumping the gun. That is like me saying tne Jazz are done because Deron hurt his ankle and missed the first 3 weeks.

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.5 at 11:34 am
To be fair Russ, they didn’t have the preseason to work AI into the mix. Has to have time.

  • matt the jazz fan Posted: Dec.5 at 11:34 am
fair enough i’ll qualify my statement to now state “it looks so far like they’re losing the gamble of trying to win it all this year too in addition to having cap flexibility in 2010″ and for the record if the jazz had traded deron for AI and gone .500 after 13 games i’d be fuuuuming! (bad comparison because the ages and contracts aren’t equivalent, but still)

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.5 at 11:36 am
I’m not gonna fume over a record in December. You act like they have a losing record or something.

  • Myles Brown Posted: Dec.5 at 11:38 am
Honestly, I dont see how it can go both ways. “They beat the Cavs, Spurs and Lakers!” But they’ve also lost to some sh*t teams. “Well they need more time.” More time to what? Theyve already shown what they can do, but the question-as it has always been with these Pistons-is can they do it consistently and when it matters? Right now, early as it may be, based on the evidence Im sayin no.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Dec.5 at 11:42 am
TAD, I was referring to the Nuggets as far as winning percentage. But time? AI’s an expiring contract, is he not? I can’t imagine that they’d re-sign him this summer, so this is what you’ve got.

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.5 at 11:42 am
    Fair enough.

  • Allenp Posted: Dec.5 at 12:09 pm
    Myles
    You make a good point.
My feeling is that with Chauncey, even if the Pistons played their best, they were not going to beat Cleveland or Boston. That was my feeling way before the trade.
With the trade, if they play their best, I think they can beat Cleveland, and POSSIBLY beat Boston. I’m wavering on Boston, but I think they have a better shot then they had with Billups.
Now, with Iverson, the Pistons could also implode by the All-Star break and squeak out of the first round to get killed in the second round. That would have never happened with Billups.
Billups was the steadying force on the Pistons, but if he’s a team’s best player, that team is going to struggle to beat elite teams.
Iverson doens’t bring the same leadership or complete skill set, but if he’s your best player and your other players are talented, you can get to the Finals in the East.
That’s what my gut tells me.

  • what Posted: Dec.5 at 12:17 pm
I don’t really get it… the only bad team the Pistons have lost to is the L-Wolves, and they’ve beaten some good teams along the way since the AI trade too… give it some time and it will work out.

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Dec.5 at 12:40 pm
    12-4 with chauncey
TAD, the Broncos are going to be in the AFC Championship game.

  • Harlem_World Posted: Dec.5 at 12:57 pm
From a Pistons standpoint, it comes down to, are you happy with a decent run, knowing you’ll never win it all - or do you roll the dice and take a chance on something that COULD take you further than before, but with it carries the risk of imploding your team? Detroit has done ‘good’ over the past 4 years, they need ‘better’ - or, dare I say it…’best’. Whether it pans out for them or not, this was a move they had to make. As for Denver, they’ll be happy with inheriting the Pistons ‘Good’ for a few years and aren’t even thinking about championship. To be real.

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.5 at 12:58 pm
The Lions are going 0-16….top that!

  • Josh D Posted: Dec.5 at 2:06 pm
Shut up! This is a Basketball site! American Football(i’m British)is for chickens, you have to wear like 5 layers of padding and you have to start again when you get tackled. Try Rugby Union, you have no padding except a Gumshield and you have a Rucks when somebody goes down

  • what Posted: Dec.5 at 2:29 pm
    F-ck the United Kingdom.

  • Theo Papaloukas Posted: Dec.5 at 2:35 pm
    @what…:what?
@TADOne&Allenp…:the only way the pistons get to the Finals with the cartoon playing serious minutes is…well,….there is no-way!!!(o.k. ,only if we have a Man.United type of accidentt to BOTH Celtics,Cleaveland AND Orlando…)

  • witness Posted: Dec.5 at 3:33 pm
his beastality level did raise. but lebron is way ahead of the pack.

  • The Black Clark Kent Posted: Dec.5 at 3:41 pm
That’s funny, the headline included “coaching” and “George Karl” in the same sentence. I’m not sure George even knows what the score is sometime during the game. He just sat there last night as the Spurs were going on run after run in the 1st half. George, you know your allowed to call timeouts to halt the oppositions momentum, right?

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Dec.5 at 3:53 pm
Somehow George Karl hasn’t coached his way to 892 career wins. What a lucky guy.

  • Allenp Posted: Dec.5 at 4:00 pm
    Paps
yeah, cause the cartoon’s never been to the Finals?
He’s been there more often than some of your favorite players.

  • Allenp Posted: Dec.5 at 4:01 pm
    Ryne Nelson
Lenny Wilkens has over 1,000 career wins.

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.5 at 4:51 pm
Theo: Was that a different AI who went in 2001? Please just shut up. Thanks.

  • what Posted: Dec.5 at 5:09 pm
@Theo: What the hell does “cartoon” even mean? Is that some kind of insult in your pea-sized brain? Which sorry azz European stiff who wouldn’t average 3 points per game in the NBDL are you gonna name yourself after next? Do you enjoy being an uninformed buffoon, or does it make you self-conscious? Have you ever seen a v-gina in your life? Can you please do the rest of Slamonline a favor and brutally murder yourself? Thanks. By the way, Euroleague is just the NBDL with more white people.

  • Theo Papaloukas Posted: Dec.5 at 5:30 pm
@what…:what?(i am a sorry azz European who would dunk in your face in his prime E-A-S-I-L-Y and who can propably still do even now…Have you ever played bball other than NBALive? )
@the kids….:i won’t get into detail again for the reasons why the cartoon (meaning:fun for the kids and nothing more. And it’s true cause all kids love it!!) accidentally made it to the finals cause there are much more peolpe with real bball knowledge visiting this forum than you think and they would definitely get bored by someone stating the obvious…By the way:”SLAMONLINE:the place where you can feel like a bball genious just by observing the obvious!!!”.
    @Ryne(3:53pm)…:simple as that!!!!
And to sum it up once again: Because of their overall negative BOTH cartoons are two of the worst players in the history of this game.

  • Theo Papaloukas Posted: Dec.5 at 5:41 pm
One more think: if the cartoon’s advisors are smart (ain’t no way it can make that kind of calculations by itself…)they will take him out of the league for some reason at the end of this year cause it’s(inefficiently inflated)stats is the only think that can save it’s hall of fame nomination…3 years from now and after offering nothing in a couple more teams he would be only a sad bball memory….(what an insult to compare a real player like Billups with A.I….)

  • davidR Posted: Dec.5 at 5:52 pm
i guess the sixers accidentally beat the lakers in that first game. i’m sure mr cartoon’s 48-5-6-6steals had nothing to do with it either

  • davidR Posted: Dec.5 at 5:52 pm
    *5steals

  • Theo Papaloukas Posted: Dec.5 at 6:05 pm
@davidR…:if you had ever played competitive bball you would have known what it’s like to cruise at the payoffs the way the Lakers did that year and what impact this 11-0 has to your concentration…Now,if you are a real team you get back and humiliate the fool that took advantage of your boredom. The Lakers did exactly that and because their oponenent was really weak they ridiculed A.I. and his team by winning 4 straight, the last 3 being in HIS OWN homecourt…W-A-K-E U-P!!!!

  • Moose Posted: Dec.5 at 6:06 pm
@ Josh D: You ever seen an American football game, man? The stuff is insane.

  • what Posted: Dec.5 at 6:07 pm
I don’t know whether you are trying to convince me that you are the real Theo Papaloukas or whether you actually think you can dunk on me, but either way you are an idiot and Papaloukas would have zero chance of even getting off the bench in the NBA, just like 99.9% of the Euroleague.

  • Hursty Posted: Dec.5 at 6:08 pm
Theo- you sir, are a fu(kwit.

  • davidR Posted: Dec.5 at 6:08 pm
you never run out of excuses and ridiculous arguments.

  • what Posted: Dec.5 at 6:10 pm
Oh yeah, and that remaining 0.1% who COULD get playing time in the NBA is Josh Childress and Earl Boykins.

  • davidR Posted: Dec.5 at 6:10 pm
if you’re truly a real, competitive team, you never take it easy.

  • davidR Posted: Dec.5 at 6:11 pm
you can say all you want how the lakers took it easy, how the sixers won by accident, but you can’t argue with the results.

  • Theo Papaloukas Posted: Dec.5 at 6:18 pm
@what…:what? (and i don’t need to be the real Theo to dunk on your face,…if you get to Romania or Greece in the next 3 years -i am getting old unfortunatelly- i will let you fly with me…)
@Hursty!!! where have you been my little friend..?!! to much homework, e…? Are you at the same classroom with Teddy,Jukai,Eboy,TADOne and the other kids..??!! I’d love to have a photo of you little kids singing christmas songs!!!

  • davidR Posted: Dec.5 at 9:14 pm
    unfortunately i do what?

  • what Posted: Dec.5 at 9:24 pm
Theo, your mind-numbing stupidity wouldn’t be so offensive if you were at least funny or entertaining. But you are incapable of doing that either. Your insults are played out and uninteresting. You say the same dumb sh-t every day and it is boring and makes the Slamonline experience worse for everyone who has to read your stupidity. Oh yeah, not that it matters at all, but considering that even most of the Euros in the NBA have a hard time dunking, I doubt that some middle aged man in his mom’s basement in Romania or Greece can dunk on me. But feel free to come to the ATL and feebly attempt to prove me wrong.

  • Nashty Posted: Dec.5 at 9:32 pm
Allen Iverson is much better!!………….ok, maybe not.

  • Todd Spehr Posted: Dec.6 at 2:02 am
Along these lines: The MVP criteria either needs to be clearly established, or they need to hand the vote back to the players. One or the other. It’s as if labeling a guy an ‘MVP Candidate’ is now reserved for more than just the very best.

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Dec.6 at 4:35 am
funny how pap’s calls regulars ‘kids’ then refers to people as cartoon’s.

  • Moose Posted: Dec.6 at 7:54 am
