Ray Felton Could Be The Next Bobcat To Go

by Ryne Nelson

A few weeks ago, Mutoni mentioned that “MJ is looking to make a big trade, one that would dramatically alter the look of the Charlotte Bobcats.”

As usual, Mutoni proved to be on point, but not entirely in the way the rumors predicted (pundits thought Gerald Wallace would be first on the trade block).

After this week’s trade, the Bobcats’ needs are different. As it stands now, Raymond Felton, D.J. Augustin and Raja Bell will fight for minutes in the Bobcats’ backcourt. The Arizona Republic’s Paul Coro says trading Felton makes sense:

Charlotte insisted on (Sean Singletary) being in the trade even though the Bobcats have Raymond Felton and D.J. Augustin. It has been rumored that Felton could be on the trading block and this will only fuel that more.

The Cats don’t seem comfortable with Felton playing off the ball, and it’s obvious Larry Brown wants his offense run solely by his 21-year-old rookie phenom.

Felton seems like the odd man out because he’s not the go-to scorer the team needs.

i think felton and augustine could be something like the iverson/snow backcourt LB used in his philly days… and i know ray nor james are those type of scorers but the are extremely effective together and aren’t the defensive liabilities you’d think…

  • riggs

larry brown solely using his rookie phenom….what does that remind me of?

  • Bostwik

As long as they don’t trade him to Phoenix.

  • http://www.myspace.com/hemantsbeats what

They should trade him to the Grizzlies for Darko.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ Moose

Augustin has impressed me this year. If this goes through, best of luck to him. He can do it . . . in my opinion, at least.

  • ciolkstar

Please let this happen. I just picked DJ up yesterday and now my PG depth is ridiculous (Devin Harris, Joe Johnson, Rondo, DJ Augustin)

  • http://deleted Fresh

i had a feeling that Felton would get traded especially with the play off DJ. who for a rookie has come into his own pretty fast and might prove to be more of a pure point guard then raymond. although both can really talented players the make up of them team doesnt look like they can both co exist together

  • Jared Smith

felton has been playing well lately

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

How about Felton and Butterbean—I mean Sean May—for Jared Jeffries? Jeffries seems like a Larry Brown kind of guy, Felton can fill the Knicks’s need for a scoring guard, and Sean May can eat ice-cream sundaes with Eddy Curry and Jerome James. And the Knicks clear more ’10 cap space and their crowded frontcourt. Win-win-win-win?

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Hurry up and make this happen MJ. I got Augustine on my fantasy squad baby!!!

  • maio

    Just two words: dispersal draft

  • Todd Spehr

Steve Kerr would probably give them Nash straight up — I’m writing this without smiling

  • AD25

This has nothing to do with the Bobcats, but I hope you guys do a “Worthy of Your Attention” for the Hornets/Celtics game tonight… aaagghh I can’t even wait man.

Oh and about the the Bobcats.. I thought LB didn’t like rookies?

  • http://www.ojhoops.blogspot.com the baconator

Russ, throw in a sign-and-trade with Robert “Tractor” Traylor and I’ll call Donnie Walsh personally to suggest it!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Sarcasm and funny ass joke aside, I think what Russ said actually makes sense.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Of course, that just means the Knicks won’t do it.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Besides, i’m quite surry LB’s number is blocked at the MSG offices.

  • NBK

@Russ-Mike D’Antoni and Donnie Walsh already said Duhon is their guy, and just like in Charlotte I don’t think Mike D’Antoni would like to play a point better then his current point off the ball. I think the best trade for charlotte would be Raymond Felton and maybe Sean May or Adam Morrison for Fanscisco Garcia and Kenny Thomas (salary problem though) or just John Salmons

  • http://nyer.sosblog.com/ Be A Real Fan

@ciolkstar: I got you beat, bud. CP3, JKidd, Duhon and DJ Augustin. Yeaboyeeee

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

If the Wiz were smart, (which they aren’t) they’d try to deal Arenas right now to the Cats for Raymond Felton and the Cats first round pick and get the rebuilding process underway. I know this deal would never happen or work in any imaginable way but I just want to see Larry Brown coach Gilbert Arenas. Basicly I’m the Joker. I just want to watch the world burn.

  • NBK

B- They would have to get rid of the salary cap for your fantasy scheme to work out. I don’t think Michael Jordan is going to make any deals with washington any time soon though probably never

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Kid Presto

Like I’ve said, D.J. is the future point for the bobcats. L-Brown finally realizes that this rookie has too much potential to be a star to not utilize him. Sorry Raymond, but you are the odd man out. Felton needs to be shipped to OKC and him, westbrook, and KDizzle can make a very scary young 3.

  • NBK

Why does everyone think Felton is going to a team that already has a point? That is not happening.

  • http://nyer.sosblog.com/ Be A Real Fan

Raymond Felton at the SG for the Knicks? Doubt it. Especially for Jared Jeffries who D’Ant is penciling in at the starting C once he’s fully recovered from his broke leg. Felt’s under-sized at the 2 and D’Ant loves N8 the Gr8 and plays him heavy minutes. He needs someone in the backcourt who can cover for Nate (like Mobley could have been) score some and play D. And Sean May? WTF?? you effin homer. Don’t try taking a dump on our heads and calling it a mud treatment. That trade stinks for the Knicks.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

What is the going rate for Michael Redd these days?

  • http://nyer.sosblog.com/ Be A Real Fan

Send Felton to Seattle..er..I mean OKC for Wilcox. Poor Chris needs a get out of jail card. Talk about big man depth. Okafor wouldn’t know what to do with himself with that much help.

  • NBK

@B-The bucks want an all star caliber player and cap relief for Redd
@BARF-The thunder do not want anyone taking away from westbrooks development, they are not going to get another point they already have earl watson anyway. And Okafor does not need help, Okafor should b the help, he is not a real low post threat, he is just big and good at defense.

  • NBK

It is not implausible to think GS does away with Jamal Crawford for Raymond Felton and Sean May (i dont know the salary implications) but i do know that GS would prefer to have Monte at the 2 rather then the 1, and Jamal is expendable.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I would’ve said Felton and (fill in the blank) to Miami for Marion, but Chalmers has changed my feeling that the Heat need a PG.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Crawford can’t be traded again right away (something with CBA).

  • http://nyer.sosblog.com/ Be A Real Fan

“taking away from westbrooks development”- true, true. The next best place, in my head, is Milwaukee. Ridnour isn’t as good as Skiles hoped he’d be. He’s alright but the kid is a tempo killer and gets weak in the knees when it’s his turn to hit a clutch shot. Sorry Luke. Felt’s heady, strong dude. Swap him for Luc Richard (stuck behind Charlie Villy) , who I think Larry Brown would like even though he’s a rookie. Or even Villy for Felt. The Bucks have some ‘splaining to do. They ain’t that good.

  • http://nyer.sosblog.com/ Be A Real Fan

I don’t think Jamal is an LB kinda guy either so you can take his name out of the mix. What I have learned from thinking about these proposals is that Felt’s value in the league is pretty close to nil…nada…nathan. Teams would rather develop their young’ns then take on a PG/SG who’s been stuck in Charlotte for an uneventful span of time.

  • NBK

Be A Real- It is not necessarily LB’s call, it is michael jordan and the rest of the front offices, and if they are indeed trying to get rid of felton they will be able to get a 20ppg-ish scorer for him so his stock is pretty damn good. @Tad-I think Jamal can be traded but GS will have to agree to pay some of his salary or something like that. No matter, look for a developing team that needs a point to make a play for felton or a playoff team in need of strong bench play from its guards.

  • NBK

Most likely it’ll be a three team trade which is virtually impossible to predict since what Charlotte needs and is offering does not really match up with what the rest of the league is offering.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I actually don’t see much of an issue with other teams who have PG’s not considering Felton, because I see him as a backup, not a starter. His play is too erratic.
    Actually, what about the Hawks?

  • http://nyer.sosblog.com/ Be A Real Fan

NBK, I’m just saying. LB wasn’t hot on Jamal when he coached the Knicks. I doubt they would revisit the combination. GS with Monta and JCraw are interesting. Plus, they would have to wait for a couple of months for Craw to be eligible for trade again. You have to wait a while after you trade a player to trade him again. Plus, I think Nellie wants JCraw at the PG and Ellis at the SG. Nellie’s impressed by his passing skills. Orlando could use Felt behind Nelson.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

How does that trade stink for the Knicks? Worst case scenario, they both come off the books next season. And if D’Antoni likes Duhon/Nate better, they can sign-and-trade Felton to wherever. Meanwhile, they get rid of a guy making $18 million over the next three seasons who has ZERO value in Mike D’Antoni’s offense. At this point they’d be much better off playing Lee, Harrington and (I can’t believe I’m even going to say this) Curry, assuming he ever gets healthy. I know D’Antoni said Jeffries would be his starting center, but he also said that he’d only coach as long as Nash played for him.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

I mean, Felton could at least spell Duhon for 10-15 minutes a night at the point, right? He can’t play 48 minutes a night all season long.

  • NBK

@BARF-I don’t know if the rules have changed their barf but i do know the pistons can trade ai right now if they wanted to and i do know that rasheed wallace was traded to the pistons 3 days after being traded to the hawks in 03 or whenever right in the middle of the season. The you have to wait rule (i may be wrong) i think only applies to rookies who just signed their contract and players who do not want to lose their bird rights.

  • NBK

@Russ- Oh yeah you think felton is going to go somewhere to play 15 minutes a night? There are people who still think he has potential to be in the same category as Dwill and CP (he does not have that potential). NY is out of the question and i doubt the bobcats are going to take on jeffries salary considering he has never played a season without getting injured.

  • http://www.sprint.com/sero Dma

Felton to the Magic for Fran Vasquez and Brian Cook.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

    Dma is smart.

  • jose

felton and okafor to miami for marion and another.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

    ^Darrell Wright or Dequan Cook?

  • Orlando Woolridge

Wow, has Felton’s stock slipped that far? Is Augustin really that much better, or is it just that he is the new guy, so everybody is excited about his potential? I guess I just don’t see that much of a difference in talent between the two. And don’t say that DJ is more of a pure point, because I notice that he’s gunnin’ as well.

  • NBK

You think the bobcats would take that? I really really don’t, they are not going to take something that is a question mark for their starting PG. Really think about it the bobcats want a scorer they need a scorer and Felton is the only player they are willing to trade that can get them that. Maybe they can trade Felton in a three team where they get Gerald Green and Stackhouse (since they like vets-they just signed juwan) while the Kings get Felton and *Morrison* and the Mavs can make their bench more potent with Garcia and get some cap relief with Thomas.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

@Orlando:He has also been dropping dimes at the same time. That is the biggest difference.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

@Russ:I think D’Antoni may test that theory Russ. Stay hydrated, Chris!

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Orlando, I have to disagree. Augustin has proved to be as pure of a point as they come. Felton is much more inconsistent and turnover prone.

  • Orlando Woolridge

Ok, I guess I need to check out more bobcats games (wish that L-pass preview was still in effect). I check the boxscores everyday, but that doesn’t always tell the whole story. Man, I was so sure Felton would be a top tier point in the league.

  • NBK

On a totally off topic note-
Would Stephon Marbury not be the perfect sign for the suns if he is ever made available? Wouldn’t he love to stick it to D’Antoni- And he would be the best backup PG in the league if he was happy. Plus in Phoenix he could still get like 15-30 minutes a night

  • http://chugachugachugachuchu.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

I have no problem with this. DJ is a top notch PG, and my boy Sean Singeltary was lights out at V-Tech. Now if we bring Guerromo Diaz, the dude we were trying out in the summer leauge/pre-season to a contract and get a upgrade at power forward/shooting guard in exchange, it would be hard to see Felton go, but i would have no problem with it.

  • http://chugachugachugachuchu.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

    “NBK says:

HELL NO, MORRISON>>>>GARCIA OR GERALD GREEN.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

    NEW LINK

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

and all these dumb trades you guys are proposing are beyond me. We need one more good Power Forward, maybe a good reserve Small Forward, or another Reserve PF, for Felton plus like a 2nd round pick.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

I’d take Gerald Green over Adam Morrison 10 days out of the week.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

^You must not have seen Adam play recently. He has hit lots of clutch 3s for us this year. I like gerald though, Gerald Green+a 2nd Round pick for Felton would make me happy

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

BET: What you need is a good center. What happened to those Crash trades in the summer?

  • http://www.ojhoops.blogspot.com the baconator

@BET: Hey, have you met Eddy Curry? Give him a summer of intense training, and he’ll be a decent power forward. Plus, you don’t need to worry about the salary cap cuz you can pay him off the dollar menu. How’s that sound?

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

And Gerald Green is not an NBA starter.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

Ryne: it was effecting his play, which made his trade value go down. Now that we wont trade him, he is gonna step up big. Also Ajinca has shown me lots of signs of promise recently. He is not a good center yet, but he will be. And eventually Ryan Hollins will step up. And Baconator: we got a player like that already and his name is Sean Freakin May.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

Ryne, Gerald Wallce needs a reserve, Gerald Green would be a good fit for that.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Great point about Ajinca. You had some serious hate for him in that preview, though. He’s not going to be great, but I can see Ajinca (at best) becoming a Haywood type.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

Yeah, but in the preview i also said we would go 82-0 and eventually solve the Point Guard war by trading Felton. Only some of it was valid.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

and Ryne the reason for that ‘hate’ was because we needed a power forward. Had we drafted Jason Thompson or Darrel Arthur, the J-Rich trade wouldnt had ever happend.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Either way, no one’s high on Felton. It would seem like almost too smart of a move for M.J. to pull off. You’d figure he’ll end up trading D.J. for Corey Maggette.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

I still think taking Augustin was the best pick Michael Jordan’s ever made (not that that’s saying much). Why would you want another young power forward when you have a perfectly good one (Okafor) locked up for a long time?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

Because that perfectly good one plays best as Center.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

@Ryne:Neither is Adam Morrison. But I’d still take Green. He’s what, twenty yrs. old? I know his behavior has been erratic at best but he’s still got a helluva lot more upside than Adam Morrison at this point in his career.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

    Gerald Green maybe=JR Smith 2.0?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

^says the guy who obviously never saw Morrison play this season.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

B.Long is that good thing? Taking 45 foot 3s is a good thing?

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

^It isn’t great but it’s better than Adam Morrison. And yes Adam has improved a lot now that he is actually suiting up. I’ve seen him knock down a few treys, but honestly BET, who would you rather have on your squad, Adam or J.R.?

  • http://chugachugachugachuchu.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

But its between Adam and Gerald.

  • http://where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

True. I’m from Texas so I may be a little bias to my fellow Texan but I could see Gerald becoming a star in the right situation. He really has been playing solid this season.

  • MeloMan13

comparing Jr to morrison is foolishness. jr wins hands down

  • http://thesportsdiaryonline.blogspot.com Roy

it could work if the trade happens… :D

  • DruWil

It Adam Morrison still playing in the NBA?

  • Nbk

Adam morrison hitting a couple clutch threes is great and all but it’s not like he’s been preventing any threes, layups or any other type of offense with his defensive prowess . He’s a decent offensive player but day after day a one way player is made out to be way more valuable then he really is. Although gerald green is not a good defensve player he’s better then Morrison and has the potential to b better at every single facet of the game. Plus gerald greens contract is short and stackhouse expires little risk to alottery team. No offense bet

  • http://celtics.com KobeWearsAPurpleThong

Bet the Cats suck-that’s a sure bet.

  • http://www.bbl.org.uk Josh D

Gerald Wallace and Ray Felton to the Heat 4 The Matrix and Chris Quinn

  • Max

how about felton and morrison to the kings for thompson and salmons. That sounds like a good and reasonable trade for both sides (slightly better for charlotte but that doesnt mean anything, memphis traded gasol for basically nothing so…)

  • Nbk

Sorry max thats a complete steal, and the kings will not give their pf of the future up, especially with their 2nd leading scorer, if it were felton and wallace for salmons and miller that may make sense the salary’s are relaively close. And Brad Miller would help Emeka 100% more than Diaw will. Diaw will hurt everything the bobcats try and do and larry brown will quickly become sick of him

  • tealish

Felton had some key moments in tonight’s game. I just don’t know what the hell Michael Curry is doing.

  • jrp14

    Ridnour>>>>>Felton….blooocckkkaaa!!!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

Josh D, a Bobcats team with Marion AND Diaw would make Larry Brown shoot himself in the foot or find some other excuse to leave the team and either retire or go coach his 2 favorite things- Allen Iverson and the Pistons. Diaw alone can be ‘cured’ of his ‘laziness’, but with Marion, thats a unstopable underachiving combonation that died in Phoneix and should stay dead. Forever.

  • http://celtics.com Charlotte Kittens

Too bad such a talented guy like G.Wallace is stuck on the Kittens. Hopefully he’ll get out of there. I think he will end up w/the Celtics.

  • http://celtics.com says:

Charlotte: wear empty seats nightly happens…

  • Nbk

The chances of him on the celtics happens any time soon are about the same as the suns trading Shaq

  • rikson

Isnt Jared Jeffries a SF… I mean hist J aint good enough to play SG! So he is basically a defensive orientated SF – just like (a worse) Wallace. Why should the Bobcats trade for him???
