  Maybe I’m just jaded and old and bitter (Ryan: maybe?), but I don’t get the hoopla here. Yes, breaking a record that’s stood for a quarter-century is cool. But before CP3 got close, did anyone seriously know or care who held the “most consecutive games with a steal” record? Was anyone even aware that they kept track of that sort of thing? I mean, Chris averages 2.3 steals per game for his career. Which means a game without a steal is an anomaly. You’d think that if people were really thinking about this record, that someone like Allen Iverson or Michael Jordan would have broken it a long time ago. (You’d also think the related records would be known, and well—who holds the record for most consecutive games with a block? Most consecutive games with a rebound? Thought so.) All I’m saying is that when Chris Paul’s career is over, I doubt the first (or second, or third, or tenth) thing anyone will say about him will be “he broke Alvin Robertson’s 23-year-old ‘consecutive games with a steal’ record!” And if it is, well, something will have gone incredibly wrong.

  For him at this age and stage in his career, it’s just something to recognize. No it’s not going to be something legends are made of but it is in the history books along with many other meaningless stats. But the fact is his name will forever be in there. I’m sure he hopes it won’t be the only thing he’s remembered for.

  ^ I can see your point, Russ. Then again, Alvin Robertson was an outstanding defender. The nature of the record itself might be a bit gerry-mandered, but it may still be a useful barometer for Chris Paul’s career. It might be that no one will mention this thing when Paul retires, because he will have accomplished far greater things by that time.

  Yeah breaking a record that stood for a quarter-century is cool.
  Even if AI or Jordan had know about the record – I really (REALLY) doubt jordan would have played to break this one (AI not so much). Still, its cheap to play just to break a record. But thats the great thing here: CP3 did it while playin his game…

  ^ I don’t know, man. If a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? I think that the reason we keep records is to judge the greatness and relevance of our heroes. By that standard, if no one knows of the record, then it does seem to be cheapened. I vote that an unknown record is less of a record than a known one.
