Reggie Theus Meets the Coaching Guillotine

by Marcel Mutoni

In the most unsurprising news of the day, the Sacramento Bee is reporting that Reggie Theus has been relieved of his duties:

A Kings head coaching position that has been a musical chairs post in recent years changed once again around 10 a.m. on Monday morning, when – according to two sources close to the team – Reggie Theus was fired along with assistant Chuck Person and assistant Kenny Natt was given the role of interim head coach.

No, not the Rifle Man, too! The Maloofs are heartless.

The Kings were 6-18 under Theus this season, but it felt worse than that. A lot worse. Good luck, coach Natt.

Ever think it could be the players fault?

    There’s always “Hang Time”…

  • Marcel Mutoni

apologies for the pic that accompanies this post. it’s harrowing, but it had to be done.

  • ber

Mutoni’s so embarrassed by that photo he un-oranged his name.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Reggie Theus and Chuck Person had to have been the best one-two scoring coaches in the L. Well, until today that is….

  • http://www.sprint.com/sero Dma

Some of these owners are semi-tarded. look at that roster and tell me how they are supposed to win – Old Brad Miller, Spencer Hawes (who’s actually been very surprising this year), Kevin Brittle Martin, 5 years of Mikkie Moore, Beno Udrih and John Salmons, drafting Douby when they had Garcia, no PF to speak of. If SAR had been playing, Theus would still have his job. bet on that!

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

He should’ve known better than to beat the Lakers. The Maloofs specificly told him to tank as bad as possible until they can move to Vegas.

  • uptown kid

i dont think i want to be a NBA coach anymore when i grow up……..

Mo Cheeks yesterday, Reggie Theus today, Mike Dunleavy tommorow?

  • Diggy

  • Todd Spehr

    Poor Chuck Person

  • Crook

It’s so much easier to fire a coach than getting rid of non talented players hom you want to keep in order to lose. It’s hard for me to feel sorry for an out of work millionaire…give him a govt bailout!

  • Crook

oh by the way. I liked Theus as a coach almost as much as a player.Very good at both

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I guarantee you that security was around when they called Chuck Person into the office to give him his walking papers.

  • ciolkstar

This is really getting out of hand. How many coaches already fired this season? Six? Seven?

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

*is disappointed headline wasn’t ‘Hang (‘Em Up) Time’*

  • riggs

black coaches are getting fired man! its like OJ gets locked up and all hell breaks loose

  • underdog

OJ gets locked up and Pacman is back on the field.

  • http://celtics.com KobeWearsAPurpleThong

Maybe know he’ll finally cut that Afro-Mullet. Hey at this point, Sacremento may even take you back. Hell why not call up Mitch Richmond and see if the Maloofs will give ya’ll a tryout?!?

  • http://kings.com says:

Hey now c’mon..it’s not just black coaches getting fired. Reggie Theus got fired too.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

For once, don’t blame the coach . . . blame the players. The coaches for the Thunder, the T’Wolves, and the Kings have all been fired. It isn’t their fault for the teams that are perennial cellar-dwellers.

  • Marcel Mutoni

um, the thunder are in their first year. there’s nothing perennial about that.

  • Nbk

I believe they are firing their coaches because it too is part of the rebuilding process. Why would a team keep a coach they know they will not have at the end of the season? Why let players develope bonds and loyalty toward a coach that will be gone in a few months anyway? It is not like these teams have playoff hopes might as well get going toward the situation you want as a gm rather then sticking with something just to end it later.

  • Nbk

cosign russ- headline should have read something like- time for theus to find more hangtime- or theus out of hangtime for a second time.

  • kracka0476

Why even pay a coach to be coach of a crappy team just let the team captain coach the teams and save yourself some money!!!! If you want to tank and get a high draft pick just say it and save Reggie all the trouble.

  • http://slamonline.com Tzvi T

He should go back to college coaching, recruiting was his best talent, not coaching.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

OK Marcel, the Thunder Formerly Known As The Seattle SuperSonics. :)

  • http://slamonline.com Jacob J

Isnt that like the 5th coach fired this season already.

  • http://celtics.com KobeWearsAPurpleThong

    More like 5th this week…

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Maybe they fired Kevin Martin too because he sure as hell hasn’t been playing, just ask my fantasy team. Tough luck, but that’s exactly why contracts shouldnt be guaranteed, makes it easier to fire coaches since its one guy.

  • Jacob

    5 down damn! next dunleavy

  • The Promise

Michael Curry is next. Wait and see.

They should hire Doug Christie’s Wife.

  • skillet forilla

god, that picture is hideous. my eyes.. MY EYES

  • Mike

at least he beat the lakers

  • tealish

They looked much better than a 6-win team from the games I watched. They beat LA and Detroit without their best player!

  • From out of Nowhere

Likelihood of coaches of bad NBA teams getting fired:

Mike Dunleavy Sr. – It’s the Clippers. Considering the mess that happened when MDsr took over Elgin Baylor’s role as GM, I doubt it’s going to happen any time soon.

Marc Ivaroni – I wouldn’t be surprised if the Grizzlies’ 4-game win streak (!) has brought him another week and a half.

  • doyouwantmore

Weird. You’d think Geoff Petrie would have approached himself and cordially informed himself that he was going to have to let himself go.

Get PATRICK EWING. He’ll develop Spencer Hawes at least.

  • Crook

Nbk: Will the players NOT develop loyalties and trust with the interim coach also? (Who probably will not be there at the end either or will be fired 20 games into the next season. HELLOOO…

B.Long: Christies wife isn’t that hot, it’s all about the media and hype. Don’t get sucked into it. lol.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

kinda crazy but she can get it, still,

  • http://where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

I don’t think that she’s really hot, I just think shes psycho and it would be fun to watch.

  • http://thesportsdiaryonline.blogspot.com Roy

    Hang Time!!! :D

  • http://Www.bbaxn.com Darksaber

wowee, the coaches are getting kicked out so fast this season, the door cant spin fast enough to hit them on their way out. Aaaaand, that pic just made Amaechi swoon, Mutoni

  • http://Www.bbaxn.com Darksaber

and still Avery is chillin, enjoying the severance package cuban must have paid him. Get back in the game, daffy!

  • Crook

You’re right BLong, it would be fun to watch. especially watching Christie behind the bench doing his hair. LOL

  • Blinguo

I have a feeling if Ryne Nelson posted this story, we wouldn’t have that shirtless barn or whatever pic up there. Maybe Mutoni lost a bet or you guys clowned him worse than you do Sekou (“Seiko”) Smith.

  • Ken H.

And filling in as interim head coach… DICK BUTKUS!

  • chintao

The Maloofs are trying to make James Dolan look like Jack Welch.

Reggie should just make the team watch Hang Time reruns instead of game tapes. What that would accomplish I have no idea, but I support it
