Rodney Rogers Paralyzed From Shoulders Down

“N.C. Highway Patrol said Rogers was four-wheeling in the woods in rural Vance County north of Raleigh when he fell off the vehicle. Dave Odom, Rogers’ coach when Rogers was an All-America basketball player at Wake Forest University, said Wednesday that his former star is paralyzed from the shoulders down.” (Via FanHouse)

  • ciolkstar Posted: Dec.4 at 5:53 pm
My heart goes out to him and his fam…I was a fan from his Nuggets(?) and Suns(?) days. He sounds like a great guy, outdoorsman, and hard worker (even after a long pro ball career)

  • Roy Posted: Dec.4 at 5:58 pm
That’s sad news. My prayers are with him and his family… :(

  • Grenner Posted: Dec.4 at 5:59 pm

  • the baconator Posted: Dec.4 at 6:11 pm
I’m not gonna lie, I’ve never heard of Rodney Rodgers before. But anytime I hear stuff like this, my heart’s gotta go out to him. Life can certainly be a b*tch sometimes, and it’s horrible that it hast to be. My thoughts and prayers definitely go out to this guy

one day youre here, then youre gone…..some friends and i were riding atvs, we decided it would be fun to jump them off ramps. after doing that for a while, we made the ramps bigger and bigger….my last time on an atv went like this; i flew high off the ramp and the atv immediately went into a nose dive, my body flipped upwards, my hands still on the grips, my body aligned vertically. i flipped over the front of the atv, landed hard on the gravel on my side. instinctively, i put my foot on the grill of the large atv coming at me. it then pushed me, on my back, about 15 feet on the gravel…i popped right up, bleeding from my arms and back. however, there were no major injuries. I knew then i would never ride an atv. I had had all the fun you can have on one, had a crazy crash, and walked away…… i bet monta wishes he had a good story to tell, he was probably just cruising down his driveway when he blew up his ankle..

That’s sad news. One minute he was in the league then he just kinda wasn’t… I can’t remember who he played for last either. Think he was in that McDyess draft day deal, no?

  • Michael Posted: Dec.4 at 6:28 pm
Wow thats really sad. Rodney Rogers was one of my favorite players growing, he didn’t really do anything but jack up threes but for some reason i liked the dude.

  • Jer Boi Posted: Dec.4 at 6:34 pm
loved him when he was on the Nets those years..deadly from 3 pt range..it really sucks i hope he’ll be alright

  • Moose Posted: Dec.4 at 6:47 pm
My prayers go out to Rodney and his family and friends.

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Dec.4 at 7:12 pm
so the verdict is he’s truly paralyzed and there’s no chance for him to recover? that’s seriously terrible news. from the article it sounds like he’s a really genuine person and truly wants to help others.
and i just checked out TNT’s piece on Wayman Tisdale and losing his leg to cancer. nba (and sports) is where we escape reality, but life always catches up. maybe we really should take starbury’s advise and get caught up in life.

  • michelle Posted: Dec.4 at 7:26 pm
OMG! My prayers are with him. How tragic.

  • KobeWearsAPurpleThong Posted: Dec.4 at 7:27 pm

Terrible, terrible news. I’ll always remember him on the ‘02 Celtics and being a part of the greatest comeback in NBA playoff history.

  • prophecy_projectz Posted: Dec.4 at 8:08 pm
Sad news. I was wondering when SLAM was gonna report this cause it had been floating around the newswires since Saturday.
He was a fantastic player for the Suns during there 99-00 run

  • what Posted: Dec.4 at 8:09 pm
I read somewhere (don’t remember where) that there’s an outside chance he could recover… hope that’s true.

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Dec.4 at 8:19 pm
    @what: that’s what i’m hoping for too.
@John D: i remember that too. i was rooting for Nets and was just dumbfounded when the game ended.
anyway. ugh. too often bad things happen to good people.

  • Mark Z Posted: Dec.4 at 8:53 pm
Terrible. Rodney was key member of the crazy Celtics Conference Finals team in ‘02. http://www.nba.com/games/20020525/NJNBOS/recap.html

Ah geez. Pray for the guy and his family.

  • chintao Posted: Dec.5 at 2:53 am
I recall watching that guy when he was at Wake Forest. I always thought that he was going to be a beast in the NBA, because his physique was like the prototype for Dwight Howard. He wasn’t as good as I thought he would be, but he still stuck in the L for a good long time. This whole accident is just really unlucky and sad.

  • underdog Posted: Dec.5 at 5:20 am
Man, I don’t know what to say. I remember when he dropped 50 or someting around the millenium. My prayers go out to him and his family…

I don’t know the man but I feel bad for any baller who gets seriously injured. I’m so glad he’s still alive. I hope he can adjust to this. It’s so sad. I hope everybody in his community bands together to help, i hope wake forest helps, i hope the NBA helps…The man deserves it. basketball is a family sport.
