Shaq on the Eddy Curry Comparisons: ‘He Hasn’t Come Close’

by Marcel Mutoni

Like Harold Miner before him, Eddy Curry was given an unfortunate nickname when he entered the League, one he could never live up to.

The man who inspired the nickname – “Baby Shaq” – was asked to assess Curry’s career up to this point, and Shaquille O’Neal was left with little choice but to give Curry (who has yet to play this season) a failing grade.

From the NY Daily News:

“He hasn’t come close,” O’Neal says. “I don’t want to say anything that is going to hurt his feelings, but I don’t know what is going on with him. In this league, when you’re touted as something and in your mind you don’t think you’re that, then you either got to put up numbers or you got to play the game.”

“I was a little big but I was still putting up historical numbers. If he wants to get that next contract he’s going to have to go to the New York Athletic Club three times a day and just ride the bike.”

Yes. Definitely go to the gym, Eddy. Just steer clear of the exercise balls and you’ll be fine.

Unbelievable! Shaq is still the funniest ball player on the planet…

  • Simon S.Y Lawy Posted: Dec.15 at 9:40 am
trade him to Hotdog or Burger Club, he’ll live with it.

  • 王骁男 Posted: Dec.15 at 9:41 am
there are a lot of “another shaq“ ”another Bird“ ”another AI“ or someone like that.forget it! it cannot refresh me anymore now when it comes those names.

  • Clockwork Posted: Dec.15 at 9:45 am
Curry’s nickname should have been “Baby Fat”

  • KobeWearsAPurpleThong Posted: Dec.15 at 9:56 am
@Clockwork-good one..It’s too bad. These guys get million dollar contracts and the chance to play in the NBA but just don’t have the discipline needed. Eddy will be another washed-up NBA’er playing in Europe someday…

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.15 at 9:58 am
    Ironic?

  • Eboy Posted: Dec.15 at 10:00 am
I don’t think we’ll see anyone else with a power game and the size and stregth of a vintage Shaq for a long, long time.

  • B. Long Posted: Dec.15 at 10:03 am
    ^I second that thought.

Eddy Curry: “Shaq knows who I am?????”

Clearly, the only thing that even comes close to Young Shaq is Dwight. But I’d say he’s slightly more atheletic but not as strong as definitely less polished in the post. Like when I watch Oden play, he’s not even on the same planet as a Young Diesel.

  • Fresh Posted: Dec.15 at 10:10 am
curry is just getting some bad breaks lately with heart problems. i really think he can crack an NBA starting five and get valuable minutes

In other news… Derrick Coleman is having a massive real estate sale.. Up to 75% off!!

  • Plasticman Posted: Dec.15 at 10:29 am
“I don’t want to say anything that is going to hurt his feelings” Thats a bit un Shaq like isn’t it? “I was still putting up historical numbers” Ah thats better

  • Plasticman Posted: Dec.15 at 10:32 am
I love how Shaq knows how good he is and doesnt mind telling everyone. Though he isn’t as relavent as he once was and can sometimes be a jack@ss, he’s still hilarious

  • Todd Spehr Posted: Dec.15 at 10:52 am
    Clarence Weatherspoon = Baby Barkley

Eddy Curry would be a beast in San Antonio.

  • Holy Baller Posted: Dec.15 at 1:05 pm
No, Eddy Curry hasn’t even come close. He’s still a good 50 BicMacs away

  • Holy Baller Posted: Dec.15 at 1:06 pm
BicMac? Pretty sure it’s a BigMac. What an idiot

  • Niio Posted: Dec.15 at 1:06 pm
Is it just me or does anyone else think that Jermaine O’neal looks like Midget Mac?

  • underdog Posted: Dec.15 at 1:58 pm
    Well, Shaq’s right.

  • Nbk Posted: Dec.15 at 2:04 pm
@Eboy & B- Wouldn’t dwight howard fit in the category of a power game comparable to a vintage shaq? Or what would you explain or compare his game too?

  • ciroqobama Posted: Dec.15 at 2:11 pm
Oliver Miller is rolling over in his …cookie dough

  • Eboy Posted: Dec.15 at 2:14 pm
Nbk, unless you saw Shaq night in and night out early (like his first 4 seasons) in his career (which I did being in South FLA and getting Heat and Magic games on local cable)you can’t really appreciate just how unstoppable dude was and how ferocious he was. I don’t think either of those words come close to describing Da’ Howitzer’s game….as nice as he is.

  • Nbk Posted: Dec.15 at 2:17 pm
I didn’t i was more or less asking then anything. I watched shaq back then but did not have the opportunity to watch that many games (i live in phoenix). So i was just basically wonderin.

  • Josh D Posted: Dec.15 at 2:44 pm
He hasn’t come close,I don’t know what is going on with him.

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Dec.15 at 3:12 pm
when shaq’s saying you are out of shape…

  • ab_40 Posted: Dec.15 at 3:15 pm
dwight is 6-10 no he’s not 6-11 and shaq is 7-1 that’s 4 inches and about 40 or 50 pounds of weight more… I’d take a young shaq over dwight at the same age any day… Eddy Curry poor guy… the guy just wants to be a gymnast hahahaha

  • ciolkstar Posted: Dec.15 at 3:18 pm
Young Shaq used his breast strength more effectively than any player (potentially in ANY sport)I’ve ever watched. Besides the tearing down backboards. Shaq was fast and slender when he first came in, but still freakishly strong. Just thinking back, he was incredible. Eddy Curry was never THAT guy. Trying to predict someone as the “next Shaq” is almost as unfair as “next Jordan”

  • Nbk Posted: Dec.15 at 3:21 pm
@ab-I don’t know where you went to kindergarten but 6’11 to 7’1 is only 2 inches. And i am pretty sure Dwight jumps higher than shaq ever did so height really does not matter. The weight thing is very valid though, i like eboy’s point that dwight just is not mean enough to be shaq

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.15 at 3:45 pm
    Breast strength!

  • Moose Posted: Dec.15 at 4:22 pm
“I don’t want to say anything that is going to hurt his feelings, but I don’t know what is going on with him.” Shaq being truly sensitive there. Well, he tried :)

  • kracka0476 Posted: Dec.15 at 4:52 pm
eddy “my game stinks like” curry

  • Big L Posted: Dec.15 at 5:29 pm
Shaq was damn near impossible to guard shaq in his prime the only player that I can think of right now was Hakeem

  • The Promise Posted: Dec.15 at 5:58 pm
Definitely not close to what Shaq has done over his career.

  • Sesa Posted: Dec.15 at 6:07 pm
numbers doesn’t speak for Shaq’s sheer domination in the paint. Used to…

  • Konate Primus Posted: Dec.15 at 6:18 pm
i would say dwight is close to DRobinson!

  • Konate Primus Posted: Dec.15 at 6:20 pm
shaq is in a class with wilt… No one else in the room… just them, they were freaks of nature we have yet to see baby-shaq’s

  • Moose Posted: Dec.15 at 6:39 pm
I hear what you’re saying about Howard, Konate. But really, Dwight is his own player and will be for a long time. He’s a ball of athleticism in a big man’s frame. Just exciting. He’ll go down in history, no doubt. But he won’t be comparable to anyone is my point.

  • Anton Posted: Dec.15 at 6:56 pm
Actually, Shaq’s in shape now. Just 5 lbs or so over the goal set out by Phoenix. So I guess his new nickname is The Hybrid.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Dec.15 at 7:06 pm
Well duh, he hasn’t gone through the ninjas yet. So how can he be the shogun?

  • Dwyane Posted: Dec.15 at 10:21 pm
Shaqs a smart guy he reminds everyone of the things he’s done. Hes real pissed that hes washed up now and he has to constantly remind people who he was in his prime. Could’nt have got all those rings without Kobe. Oh yah and Wade

  • MyKal Posted: Dec.16 at 12:16 am
If I ever see this guy (I doubt it because I don’t live in the US) I will shank him, steal his food, wallet and chain, then call green peace and tell them Japan killed another whale. (Is whaling covered on the news in the US?) I really hope Eddy reads this. And Eddy, I’m a man of my word.

  • rainman10 Posted: Dec.16 at 1:44 am
Ohhh true Dwyane. Because Kobe was probably the only athletic wing player in the league then. At least Kobe proved your theory last season. oh wait…

  • Cahyo Posted: Dec.16 at 4:44 am
well, just remember shaq’s 1st ASG..he got doubled, tripled and even quardupled team from big names like Dream, Admiral, Sir Charles, Mailman & Reignman so they wouldn’t humiliated by this rookie…Shaq’s a beast even when he’s a baby

  • chintao Posted: Dec.17 at 9:56 pm
Co-sign Dwyane @ Dec. 15 10:21 pm. Curry didn’t come close to Shaq, but Shaq’s game is starting to resemble Curry’s
