Steve Nash’s Top Three Destination Choices for 2010

by Marcel Mutoni

Phoenix, New York, and Toronto. Those are the three cities Steve Nash could see himself playing in following the now-infamous summer of 2010.

The Arizona Republic got wind of Nash’s choices from an interview the Suns’ point guard did with NBC:

“There’s a few situations out there that would be attractive, so I feel fortunate that there could be some possibilities for me,” Nash said. “One would be for me to stay here in Phoenix. I’ve had a great 4 1/2 years here. New York, obviously, is our off-season home, so we love the city. It’s a basketball mecca. Mike D’Antoni is there so there’s a lot of attractive variables. And then Toronto, to go back to Canada to play for the home team, so to speak.

“I feel good that one of those three could really be a really strong possibility. Like I said, Phoenix would be the natural choice, just because I’ve been here and enjoyed success here and really feel at home here.”

Though Steve hints at Phoenix being the city likely to win his services in a couple of years (when he’ll be 36), it’s worth noting that he likely would’ve never discussed the possibility of playing for another team if the Suns resembled anything like the team he once knew and loved. After all, he hasn’t exactly kept his frustration with management’s decisions over the past couple of seasons secret.

Visions of D’Antoni, Nash and LeBron are now dancing in the minds of Knicks fans everywhere. Let’s give them a minute or two to indulge in the fantasy. They’ve got nothing else to live for.

They’ve got that Wilson Chandler dunk on Emeka last night. Nasty. What’s an Em…it’s not even worth it anymore

  • Moose Posted: Dec.31 at 11:02 am
Toronto has Calderon, Knicks have Duhon/Nate Rob . . . best case scenario would be to stay in Phoenix. He’d hardly be relevant by then, anyways.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Dec.31 at 11:03 am
Honestly, if I’m the Knicks, I’d rather have Duhon. Would you sign a 36-year-old Nash to a two or three year deal? He won’t be able to guard ANYONE. Uh, not that he can now.

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.31 at 11:04 am
    #4) Retirement

  • BETCATS Posted: Dec.31 at 11:05 am
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. You really think the Knicks would give up on the future (Chris Duhon) to get a blast from the past (Steve Nash)? No team is that stupid. Just a silly silly dilly thought.

  • Moose Posted: Dec.31 at 11:06 am
Well, I wouldn’t put anything past the Knicks . . . I mean really, they’ve shown us that they can do anything stupid, you know?

  • B. Long Posted: Dec.31 at 11:08 am
Who says that Toronto or New York would even want a 36yr. old Steve Nash. There is no way in hell he’d be starting over Jose Calderon and Duhon has played pretty damn good for them this year considering this is his first starting gig in the L.

  • BETCATS Posted: Dec.31 at 11:13 am
I thought Isiah was fired for a reason though..

  • BETCATS Posted: Dec.31 at 11:36 am
If Nash retires and Lebron re-ups this summer, the Knicks will be more p!ssed than yellow.

  • Captain America Posted: Dec.31 at 11:36 am
No surprises here. His back problems increase with age though.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Dec.31 at 11:38 am
    Nash - D’Antoni = Luke Ridnour

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Dec.31 at 11:43 am
Steve Nash’s top three 2010 destinations should read as follows: St. Bart’s, Bora-Bora, Barca.

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.31 at 11:48 am
    Russ wins.

  • Nbk Posted: Dec.31 at 12:25 pm
Duhon has started more then he has come off the bench in his career B. He has started 189 games in his career and played 330. This is not his first starting Gig in the NBA, this is his 2nd full season starting, and he is in mike d’antoni’s system, the one nash won two mvp’s in, if nash were on the team you don’t think he would start? Wow

  • Rey-Rey Posted: Dec.31 at 1:21 pm
I still can’t believe that I’m reading that Chris Duhon is a better choice than Steve Nash. And it’s not like it’s wrong, either.

  • RV Posted: Dec.31 at 1:36 pm
what i can’t believe is that most of y’all believe Nash is going to be asking for a starting job…this is STEVE NASH, he knows he’ll have to back up the PG by then…what’s better, nate/duhon/inactive steph, or nate/duhon/36 yr old nash?

  • Big Man Posted: Dec.31 at 1:36 pm
Bill Simmons has decided to pat himself on the bat regarding the overrated profile of Steve Nash. It’s in ESPN the Mag.
It was a decent read, although it repeated the same arguments I’ve made for years. (This is Allenp.) I have to give him credit though, he never really got on the Nash bandwagon like some folks.

  • Big Man Posted: Dec.31 at 1:38 pm
Steve Nash as a backup puts Nate Robinson where?
And does Steve Nash play better defense against backups?

  • Nbk Posted: Dec.31 at 1:39 pm
Nash is not a starting PG anywhere in the league except wherever D’Antoni is coaching. Nash with run the offense better then Duhon until he retires, Duhon is overrated. So is Nash

  • Nbk Posted: Dec.31 at 1:39 pm
i mean in 2010 by the way

  • Nbk Posted: Dec.31 at 1:41 pm
Big Man - Or allenp or whoever Nate Rob is their 2, you do not have to be a traditional size to play the 2 in d’antoni’s system. Nate will be the 6th man when nash is there he just will be the 2 and not the backup pg. If he is not starting.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Dec.31 at 2:07 pm
Nate Robinson isn’t a point guard by any stretch of the imagination.

  • Harlem_World Posted: Dec.31 at 2:32 pm
Nash to NY? Sheeesh. This better not happen. I don’t think he’ll be able guard any ranked NYC hs sophomores by then. No joke.

  • Nbk Posted: Dec.31 at 2:42 pm
Well considering D’Antoni will still be the coach he wont have to play defense at all. Actually Nash has not played Defense since Santa Clara

  • EC Posted: Dec.31 at 3:03 pm
NBK, correction. Nash didnt play D at Santa Clara either. I think Nash should go back to his first sport soccer and see if he can be as overrated in that as he was in Pheonix

  • Be A Real Fan Posted: Dec.31 at 3:05 pm
I won’t front like I could see Duhon work as well as he has in NY but it wasn’t exactly surprising to see a fundamentally solid PG shine in Mike D’Ant’s offense. He’s better defensively than Nash and on many nights anchors the defense for the Knicks, which is weird to say the least. That defensive edge he has over Nash makes all the difference. A 36 yr old Nash, after a few seasons running Porter’s team, may end up backing up Duhon. As blasphemous as that may sound, eat it.

  • Nbk Posted: Dec.31 at 3:06 pm
Well he attempted to try at santa clara i never said he was actually good

  • ciolkstar Posted: Dec.31 at 3:06 pm
Nate is just a less spastic, more atheletic Barbosa. But yeah, he’s not a PG.

  • Nbk Posted: Dec.31 at 3:11 pm
Be A- Its Mike D’Antoni dude Nash will start if he is in a wheel chair. Especially if LeBron is in NY at the time, you want the best passer since Stockton to make sure he gets the ball instead of a defensive player on a team that doesnt care that much about defense. It is not impossible that Duhon keeps his job over Nash but Duhon is a product of D’Antoni’s system and he is a product that isn’t as good as the original product (nash).

  • Jacob Posted: Dec.31 at 3:39 pm
I dont think nash will make it to 2010 and if he does it would probably be his last year

  • Zee! Posted: Dec.31 at 3:50 pm
Nash better stay away from T-dot. Or else he’ll be all alone winding down his career, kinda like what would’ve happened to J-Kidd or GP if they went to the warriors to close the door on their careers.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Dec.31 at 3:56 pm
I’m feeling a coming influx of young PGs coming into the league as it is. Nash will not be more than a backup by the time he’s 36. If that. Regardless of where he plays.

  • Harlem_World Posted: Dec.31 at 3:56 pm
If Bron is in NY in 2010, I don’t care if D’Antoni plays back up himself.

  • Dwyane Posted: Dec.31 at 4:02 pm
Hes gonna go to Toronto and Hes overrated and always has been and he is washed up

  • McNulty Posted: Dec.31 at 4:43 pm
Jose’s backup in 2010 (but we need one RIGHT NOW). Will still be solid in limited minutes, & will put asses in seats. BC will get him.

  • Josh D Posted: Dec.31 at 4:44 pm
it’ll be funny if he signs for Toronto or New York, play even better and win two more back to back MVPs and keep going for another five years

  • RV Posted: Dec.31 at 4:55 pm
Nash keeps himself in great shape and a smart PG who can shoot will always be a reliable backup in the league. His back issues are not as chronic as people think, even he said his spasms only occur once every yr or two yrs. I wouldn’t be surprised if he can still run and gun at 36, he’s a soccer player, remember that. Cardio endurance is the least of his problems.

  • Hersey Posted: Dec.31 at 6:07 pm
Nash’s skills and fitness could keep him in the league until he’s 40 but it really depends on the situation if he could have a serious impact. Overrated may be the most overused term in sports. What standard are you holding him to? Why is so hard just to appreciate what someone brings to the game? Nash at his peak was possibly the hardest player in the NBA to game plan for. I’m surprised there’s so much hate for a guy who’s been so fun to watch.

  • I am the walrus Posted: Dec.31 at 7:19 pm
For LeBron, the Cavs are better than New York. Why would LeBron James want to go to the Knicks

  • Jukai Posted: Dec.31 at 7:55 pm
And the idiocy continues. Yeah, Duhon and Nate realllly play a lot of defense, that’s why the Knicks defensive rating is so high this year, that makes sense.

  • Caleb Posted: Dec.31 at 8:21 pm
    Hersey… well said.

  • Jess Posted: Dec.31 at 8:42 pm
we’ll take him… Colangelo can get it done…but we cant wait till 2010…we need something NOW

  • Nbk Posted: Dec.31 at 10:32 pm

  • Dacre Posted: Jan.1 at 2:42 am
Today…I’m happy. LeBron deserves to piigy back Nash to a FINALS series….

  • Dacre Posted: Jan.1 at 2:45 am
Hmmm..you know, we dont have to be talking about Nash as beign the STARTING PG…you are all assuming that I see….
He could be like the 2010 Payton for Miami a few years a go…

  • GOSPURSGO Posted: Jan.1 at 3:49 am
at this point new york is desperate to do anything just to look competitive . . . ON PAPER no less . . .

  • Brad Posted: Jan.1 at 4:37 am
I think he’ll stay in PHX.

  • Melvin Posted: Jan.1 at 5:19 am
Cant the knicks take a star(lbj, wade or bosh) and Nash? i think its possible cap space wise…

  • Dacre Posted: Jan.1 at 6:19 am
I just wonder how Nash’s stats would look if the D’Anotni system was still in place? I really wouldnt have expected the fall off we’ve seen from him this year….he’s been a victim of this system more so than anyone….basically bringing Terry Porter in to PHOENIX made Terry Porter the Suns PG.

  • Harlem_World Posted: Jan.1 at 11:29 am
Realistically we ain’t going anywhere close back towards anything resembling playoff basketball a the Garden until we get one of the big names back in NYC. Bron would be too much for the NY state of mind right now, so I’d be more than happy with DWade or even Bosh.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jan.1 at 1:50 pm
@ I am the walrus: You sir, are an idiot.

  • Jukai Posted: Jan.1 at 3:11 pm
Yes, it must be Terry Porter’s system, Dacre, and not the fact that Shaq is demanding the ball and posting up for 20 seconds a game for 10 possessions OR Nash’s decreased playing time OR the fact that Barnes and Barbosa like to iso-up and take the ball to the hoop after a couple of dribbles that has dropped Nash’s assists.
Do you guys even watch basketball?

  • Todd Spehr Posted: Jan.1 at 4:57 pm
I love Nash like a son, but how good will his game be in 2010?

  • Dacre Posted: Jan.1 at 9:55 pm
    Jukai….
don’t hate. I am as big a Nash fan as you…maybe more so… I wear his number in the local comp I play in, dress, cut my hair and swagger like him…. and as you say his team mates hold the ball ALOT more than they should or at least to Nash doesn’t get to direct the play as well as previous seasons….YET lets be honest…HE IS TURNING THE BALL OVER ALOT this season, certainly in comparison to his TO/ASSIST ratio. MY point still stands, that being that Terry Porter has taken the free-wheeling style away from the whole unit. Sure add to that, the fact that Shaq is having an identity crisis and thinks he is 26 and not 36. He wants out…its that simple.
Do we guys even watch basketball….??
Your pride and ignorance blind you.

  • ML Posted: Jan.1 at 11:21 pm
By the time Nash hits 36 years of age his only reason for continuing to play is for a championship. And he won’t care whether he sacrifices money or playing time when he decides what system is best for him. Chances are he’ll be getting that meager veterans contract like Grant Hill was signed to. When he makes that decision, don’t you see him going back to D’Antoni in a back-up role? His teams never play defense and I can’t see how a thirty-six-year-old Nash - whose greatest asset is his level of fitness - would pick any team with a half-court offense. So if Mike D’s style remains the same by 2010, look for Nash to follow.

  • Z Posted: Jan.2 at 2:53 am
So Nash’s assists are down because a big man is posting up, Barbosa is doing what he has been doing for his whole career in PHX and Barnes (!) is hogging. RIGHT,

  • BOSTONBALLER Posted: Jan.2 at 9:25 am
IF Nash were to go to NY in 2010 and IF James was there that would be deadly. Nash at 36 will be slower but his passing would still be great and passing to James would be easy. The offense would probably be wide open which would play to Nash’s strength of getting it and advancing it. Whenever James or whomever didn’t have a fast break opportunity Nash would pull up and hit a jumper. How many of us haven’t seen an old, slow, balding guy shooting the lights out at the local gym and pissing the young guys off b/c they can’t stop him? LOL. Nash is not over ratted by today’s standards b/c he does hit jumpers, passes well, drives to the basket and scores AND he hits his free throws. How is that overrated? He should not have won back to back MVP’s but hey sports and politics…go figure. T. Crook

  • BOSTONBALLER Posted: Jan.2 at 9:29 am
Oh yeah..and the changing a system to a player who has played in said system most of their career can have a huge effect on that player. Imagine making L. James play in a strict walk it up and pass the ball around to everyone system. He loves to fly up the court and if you MADE him slow down to a walk it up pace you would not have the same player…Trust me on this one.

  • Big Man Posted: Jan.2 at 11:04 am
    Boston Baller
Nash didn’t play in D’Antoni’s system his whole career. Or even most of his career. They played together for like four years. That’s it.
Steve Nash is the same player now that he was his last year in Dallas. No big surprise.

  • Swish Posted: Jan.2 at 3:09 pm
The only reason Nash wants to come to toronto is because they have interim and nash’s buddy, Jay Triano. No doubt BC will have hired a new coach by 2010 so you can basically cross the raps off the nash destination list.

  • qwerty Posted: Jan.2 at 11:01 pm
He won’t be worth anyone’s time and money in 2010. He’s not worth it right now with the Suns. Sure, he had some good stints a couple years ago but if he goes to any other team, I say he has maybe 9 to 10 ppg and about 5 apg. Not worth it.

  • nastierthanyou Posted: Jan.3 at 10:37 am
THere might not even be any of this talk if Robert Horry didn’t throw the fore arm shiver to Nash in the playoffs.

  • Z Posted: Jan.3 at 3:46 pm
Here comes the revisionists… What I always fail to understand is the certainty that some of you guys have that the Suns would have beat the Spurs with Amare and Diaw. How is that a foregone conclusion!?

  • Dacre Posted: Jan.4 at 7:08 pm
@Z. The Suns had the hunger, the chip on their shoulder and were right in the midst of their strongest surge as the “run n gun suns”…It’s not so much a foregone conclusion it’s more a case of that was their best opportunity and considering their age and unity at that time they probably would have went on to win that series and I’d like to think even sweep for the championship against any of the eastern conference teams that year.

  • Jason Young Posted: Jan.5 at 12:34 am
Nash to NY to rejoin D’Antoni- Send Lebron to Portland in 2010! Think about the possibilities w/Paul Allen’s deep pockets, NIKE, B-Roy, LaMarcus, Oden, Rudy! So many Championship possibilties!

  • Jukai Posted: Jan.5 at 8:14 am
Z never understood basketball before so I don’t know how I should explain to him that all those factors attribute to less assists. Do you think Magic would have averaged 12 if decided to stop finishing passes and post up for five minutes?

  • Joshua Posted: Feb.27 at 1:05 am
You know if D’Antoni could get Steve Nash to run his troops in New York he will do everything possible to get him there. It doesnt matter if they have Duhon and Nate they will still wine and dine him.
