Tales of Kevin McHale’s Hilarious ‘Coaching’

by Marcel Mutoni

As if Minnesota T-Wolves fans hadn’t suffered enough, but now the guy from the front-office who absolutely botched the last, oh, decade and some, is in charge of leading the troops into battle from the sidelines.

If you’re expecting things to improve, I’d like you first to listen to Anthony Carter’s stories, a man who played for coach McHale a few years ago.

From the Rocky Mountain News:

“It was a learning experience,” said Carter. “He didn’t really know all the X’s and O’s, but he had a good assistant coaching staff that was helping him out with a lot of plays. He kind of let us run whatever we wanted.”

“He was trying to draw plays, and it was like a little Etch and Sketch. Like a kid just messing around… He just gave the clipboard to the assistant coaches sometimes.”

Why do I get the feeling this is precisely the same way that Michael Jordan runs the Bobcats?

McHale, who Etch-A-Sketched his way to the first of many losses last night, will attempt to prove to Anthony Carter and the rest of the Nuggets that he can actually draw a play all by himself tonight in Denver.

As for you Wolves fans, you poor bastards, better hope the assistant coaches bought extra markers. It could be a long rest of the season.

I just laughed my ass off. This makes Myles Brown’s piece yesterday even MORE pertinent

  • riggs Posted: Dec.10 at 10:38 am
some former players are only good at playing basketball

  • Mo Charlo Posted: Dec.10 at 10:51 am
this is far and away the most aggressive slamwire I’ve ever read. “first of many losses,” “poor b@stards,” “all by himself”? Don’t hold back, Mutoni.

HAHAHHAHAHAHA “As for you Wolves fans, you poor bastards…” HAHAHAHAHA!!!

Somehow I don’t think Vinny Del Negro is too good with X’s and O’s either. And if I’m a T-Wolves fan, I’d rather have McHale (if he played today, would we be calling him “K-Mac”? *shudder*) on the sideline than in the front office.

    Co-sign Jacob.

  • Bryan Posted: Dec.10 at 11:23 am
Del negro doesn’t know squat dude. At worst Mchale can teach these guys some post moves.

  • Jukai Posted: Dec.10 at 11:59 am
Bryan: McHale’s idea of post-moves is pivoting five hundred times and take 20 seconds to get a shot off with five guys around him. A lot of what McHale did, he did because he was pretty much ridiculously good. Yet, when the ball went in McHale’s hands, it did not come out. That’s a team philosophy you don’t want.

Yeah your right Jukai but He can help Al and Love with there post game atleast

  • Keith Posted: Dec.10 at 12:19 pm
I would LOVE for K-Mac to keep a blog of his experiences while coaching.

  • Tarzan Cooper Posted: Dec.10 at 12:55 pm
this is exactly why kg cried.

  • Eboy Posted: Dec.10 at 1:40 pm
Jukai, for shame, McHale rarely was doubled let alone triple teamed because who were you going to leave? DJ? Ainge? The Chief on a cut to the basket, Larry drilling most anything that was given to him? He may have been black holeish at times, but he was also incredibly efficient in his role.

I think this is a good thing for Timberwolve fans. McHale claims to know what he is doing by bringing these players to Minnesota. since no one else knows what to do with them let him figure it out. You would think he had a plan when drafted them or signed them in free agency. If he fails then he’s gone and he won’t be a part of the organization. Good bye and good ridance. Doesn’t look good for him though. Even as a player he just did the dirty work, they didn’t run plays for him so how the hell would he know how to draw one up. Not saying he wasn’t a good player just not the most important one.

At least the TWolves beat the Pistons the other day. Fik.

  • Matt Posted: Dec.10 at 5:18 pm
Now he can truly see how bad the teams he’s assembled are

  • dma Posted: Dec.10 at 5:31 pm
    lmao etch a sketch

  • Moose Posted: Dec.10 at 5:46 pm
A VERY long rest of the season . . .

  • Antonis Fotsis Posted: Dec.10 at 5:46 pm
@Jukai….:you get the award for “unintentional comedy of the day” for the comment at 11:59….!!!!
By the way: “McHale: just like Dunkan, maybe better..”. Hope he doesn’t damage his playing legacy to those who never saw him play (top30 all-time) the way Isaia did…

Thank you E! Jukai, what the!?!?!? Kevin McHale is the owner of the most advanced set of post moves in the history of the game of basketball. No debate.

  • The Ghost of Wilt Chamberlain Posted: Dec.10 at 6:39 pm
McHale in the post was one of the most beautiful things in basketball! Defenders had no idea what was coming and it was a different move every time down the floor. Plus the height on his release made it impossible to block his shot and what a sweet shot it was. Oh, and he was doubled religously especially when he was coming off the bench and was the primary scoring option. Youngsters, do your homework before making comments.

  • Hursty Posted: Dec.10 at 8:45 pm
Oh man, thats funny as anything. Imagine Sheed on that team man… wow that would’ve been awesome.

  • Roy Posted: Dec.10 at 9:48 pm
I guess Mchale has been smoking a lot of crack that’s why he coaches like that… hahahaha…. :D

  • Nashty Posted: Dec.11 at 12:20 am
laugh out loud at “poor bastards”…..

  • ClydeSays Posted: Dec.11 at 5:46 am
Watched the 4th quarter of the TWolves/Jazz game with McHale on the bench. It was ugly. The Wolves had one open jumper after another and couldn’t hit. The Jazz meanwhile stayed in the game and finally broke through. It’s hard to tell how bad a coach McHale is. He’s got young players who can’t execute down the stretch. Those players also don’t defend consistantly, if at all. Glen Taylor needs to recognize that he needs a serious house cleaning.

    Very very funny Mr Mutoni,
    good job.
