The Post Up: Nuggets Slaughter Raptors

And Indiana drop the Lakers at the buzzer.

by Holly MacKenzie

Well, I don’t even know where to begin. I worked a night shift last night, as I did last week, so today will be more of one big recap rather than separate ones for each game. It’s currently 1:47 a.m. and my weak ass wrists are burning. Hate that. Anyway, what a night of NBA basketball it was.

First of all. Indiana taking down the Lakers 118-117 on a tip in from Troy Murphy at the buzzer. Danny Granger had 32 points, Rasho Nesterovic had 16 and 10 and T.J. Ford added 21 and 10 Granger dangerassists. We had this game on one of the big screens and I was watching it throughout since it was, A) the Lakers and B) close throughout. In the fourth it looked as though LA was in control as Granger was called for a flag-1, and Ariza was all over the place making things happen. One way or another, the game got flipped and the next thing I know a guy is coming out of an editing suite and he is yelling, “Pacers win at the buzzer! Pacers win!” I thought the guy was crazy, but unfortunately he was right.

These Pacers have defeated both the Lakers and the Celtics this year. Pretty impressive how they can rise to the occasion against good teams. That being said, the Lakers really didn’t play very well last night, from what I had seen, minus that fourth quarter push that apparently was short lived. They had 16 turnovers and lost despite shooting 51.3 percent from the floor. Kobe had 28, Pau Gasol scored 20 and grabbed 9 boards while Andrew Bynum added 17 points and 9 boards as well.

I know this is a basketball site and this will probably be the first and last time I ever mention the NHL on this space, but Sean Avery being suspended indefinitely by the league after commenting that he is sick of other players falling in love with his sloppy seconds was absolutely hilarious to me. Sloppy seconds = Elisha Cuthbert in this scenario. Who knew the NHL could be so funny?

Back to ball.

35-12. That is how the Wizards won their game against New Jersey last night. A 32-12 third quarter did the Nets in as they lost by 20 to the Wizards, 108-88. Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison each scored 22 points with Caron adding 10 assists as well. DeShawn Stevenson scored 21 as well. Devin Harris returned to the planet Earth after his big game in Phoenix to finish with 18 points and only 2 assists as the Nets offense struggled. Vince Carter scored 16 points in the loss while Brook Lopez continued to impress with a 10-point, 9-rebound, 3-blocks line.

I think Andre Iguodala was listening to us in the Post Up yesterday because he sure came out to play last night, scoring 25 points and grabbing 9 rebounds as the Sixers defeated the Bulls in overtime, 103-95 after being smoked by Chicago this past Sunday. This was a win that the Sixers definitely needed. Already struggling, if they had dropped a second straight to Chicago, it would not have been a pretty scene in Philadelphia. In addition to Iguodala, Andre Miller scored 28 points while Elton Brand had 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Sixers. Derrick led the Bulls with 24 points while Tyrus Thomas scored 14 points to go with 13 rebounds and 3 blocked shots off of the bench.
After their embarrassing loss to Portland on Sunday that saw their head coach reaming them out postgame, the Pistons got things back on track last night, with a victory over the Spurs, taking them down 89-77 behind a balanced scoring attack that saw Allen Iverson and Rasheed Wallace score 19 points apiece while Tayshaun Prince added 15 points and 12 rebounds. The Pistons dominated the final quarter, outscoring San Antonio 28-14 as they pulled away and took the win. Tim Duncan had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Spurs while Tony Parker had 18 in the loss.

The Clippers came up just short against the Mavericks last night, dropping a 199-98 decision despite being outscored in the fourth 32-17. Zach Randolph was great for his new team, scoring 27 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the loss as LA lost despite shooting 49% for the game, getting 23 and 9 from Al Thornton and 22 points from Baron Davis. Their bench managed only 7 points while Dallas had only 7 points from their starters outside of Dirk Nowitzki’s 29. Jason Terry scored 26 points off of the bench for the Mavericks and Jose Juan Barea added 15 points and 6 assists in the victory.

With Deron Williams getting back into the swing of things the Utah Jazz defeated the Kings tonight 99-94 at Arco Arena. Continuing the trend of the night with a ridiculous fourth quarter, the Jazz outscored Sacramento 35-28 in the final period to hold them off and move to 12-7 on the season. While Deron Williams and Ronnie Brewer each scored 14 points, Paul Millsap had a strong night with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists and Kyle Korver scored 15 off of the bench. Brad Miller had 18 and 9 for the Kings as Spencer Hawes continued to impress with 14 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Kevin Martin had 22 points off of the bench as he returned from injury, but it wasn’t enough for the Kings to grab the win.

Portland defeated the Knicks 104-97. Russ Bengtson was there and will have some notes for you!

As for the Raptors/Nuggets. Wow. A 39-point loss for Toronto and a game where the Nuggets shot 60% from the floor. Chauncey had 24 points and 14 assists and that sore elbow didn’t stop Melo from dropping in 23 points on the night while Nene had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Always great to see Nene out there. Not great to see the Raptors just fall apart like this. Everyone around me was calling for Mitchell’s head, but I’ve got to say that a loss like last night was not on the coach. Guys did not come out ready to play. At all. It was ugly. Bad. Disheartening. Sad. It also made me realize it is impossible to be around a team day in and day out (at least while they are home), and not develop an attachment to them.

It was the reaction of the players after the game that floored me. Yes, it was an absolutely horrendous loss, but it is only the beginning of December. It is still early. 9-8 is not the end of the world and yet these guys were looking like they’d just been eliminated from the playoffs. I’m happy to see that they care. I was very happy to hear Jermaine O’Neal say that they get paid a hell of a lot of money to play this game and if they think they can turn it off and on they are fooling themselves. That is one guy who gets it and I’m happy he’s on the Raptors.
Friday against Utah will be interesting. Lots on the line in that one.

Fill me in on what I missed last night. I tried to get you the most important info, but tell me the stuff I missed and what I need to know. Thanks!

Clippers have been playing much more competitive with the randolph/camby combo…..I’m thinking Kaman is on the move soon…….Kaman for Marion anyone?? And as for that Nuggets practice against the Raptors last night, your right Holly a loss like that does fall on the players. But if you have a coach that keeps your team focused and prepared, lapses don’t happen often, not every other week.

DAMN, another prize missed by 3 comments. DARN YOU RIGGS WITH YOUR KEEN ATTENTION TO DETAIL! I was so close to vying for that award. Back to ball, well actually first to Hockey- does that sport have such little freedom of speech that he is suspended INDEFINITELY by the LEAGUE for that? Rough day. Okay NOW back to ball, heh. Only comment I have is that JJ Barea is slowly making a name for himself in this league. I remember when the Mavs signed this kid. I had no clue who he was.

the Raps game was just bad…theres nothing else to say about it…ugly basketball on behalf of the Raps. I am a die-hard Raps fan, and honestly right now it is getting hard to defend them…they need to turn it around – quick…oh and I know the Raps forgot to play defence again, but EVERYTHING was going in for the Nuggets-> no excuses though…not this time.

Portland is looking better and better everyday, I know they lack tjhe postseason’s experience, but anyone else think they can already put a big upset this season??? Hard to believe it will happen but hey, who cares if I dream a little??? I’m a Blazers believer and I’ll stick with it all the way down!!!!

Break out night for the Sixers. I hope it continues as Kobe Stacks and the Lakes come into town tonight.

Holly, I take it youve got to see Millsap more than me this year, so what are your thoughts on this scenario: Utah let Boozer go to MIA, give Millsap a long term deal and commit to him as their PF then sign an elite FA Wing next summer (not sure whos on the market?). From what i’ve been hearing about how good Millsap is, could this put them over the hump?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

TAD, Avery is such a schmuck of a person.

That actress girl is obviously a “puck-chaser.”

Yeah, that Nugs/Raps game along with the Duke/Pur game were doing their best to make me turn my TV off with blow-out games.

12-3 since trade, 13-6 overall. Best 19 game start in team history. Someone ready to make a “they’d have more than 13 wins if Karl wasn’t the coach” statement?????

    Chauncey must love being home.

Sorry I haven’t had any live recaps from the Pepsi Center this year. Bad early season schedule. Holly, I’ll be checking out your boys from Oakland in a week or so….

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Right now the nuggets are playing like the only team who can challenge the Lakers(disregarding last nights loss).

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

Cub, I need some inside info from a certain amazing scout on the duke/purdue game. Your insight?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

Prentice, I’ll jump in on this topic.

I am one of the nation’s biggest Millsap fans, but he is not a franchise #1 IMO. He has proven that he can be a starter and score nicely, but on a top flight team, his role can only be a 13-15p/8-10r type of guy that supports a stud like….. BOOZER! Jazz management should make FEW changes if any going forward. I’d lock Booz up and if Paul can go get big money elsewhere, then so be it….

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

Justin. Like i mentioned in my column yesterday, this Duke team is for real. They are deep, much more athletic than usual, and experienced.

Put simply, Purdue was WAY too overhyped for that game last night. They came out shaky/nervous (biggest game in W Lafayette ever)and were never able to get their feet underneath them, that included E’Twaun Moore and Robbie Hummel.
Disappointing considering the spot and how they basically had Oklahoma beat at MSG just a week ago (before crumbling in an OT loss.) The Boilers, however, are still super young and should develop nicely in time to dominate the Big 10 (yes, that includes you, Mich St.)

In other Big 10 news, Ohio State looked nice. Matta is babying Mullens’ playing time way too much for my liking.
Evan Turner, Evan Turner, Evan Turner…..

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

They would have more wins if Karl wasn’t the coach! ;)

  • Tom

Lakers vs. Philly should be really interesting tonight. This is the first front line that can match up evenly with Bynum/Gasol, will be interesting to see how LA responds

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

    Thank you TAD…..

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

TAD, you still winning that “game” at work?

    Good luck my man!

  • matt the jazz fan

    @ prentice and @ cub:

I agree wholeheartedly, no way does millsap create his shot as well as boozer. not even close.

what the jazz need to do by all accounts is to stop fouling so much (move those feet on defense!).

then they’ll be more than ok.

maybe a super-elite shooting guard would be nice too, though.
(yes yes and a pink cadillac and peace in the middle east, yada yada yada…)

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Yeah Cub. It was supposed to be over with yesterday, but to make things more interesting, they moved it up until Friday.

All you people always hailing Kobe’s D, check out your boys’ D on the Pacers game-winning play. First he forgets to guard M. Daniels and completely loses track of him, this leads to Daniels going backdoor and getting a open layup, when Pau bails Kobe’s rear-end out and disturbs Daniels attempt, Kobe is hanging in the air with no chance of blocking the attempt instead of putting a body on Pau’s assignment Murphy. Consequently Murphy tips the game-winner in. Just like all you Kobe-lovers lavishes all the credit on him when he comes through in the clutch, this L was entirely his fault (and a friendly bounch) as every other Laker had their guy on lock. Uhh yes, let me have another sip of that Haterade, uhmmm it sure is tasty.

Igoudala looked bad in that game, don’t let the numbers fool you. The Bulls commentators were openly questioning his decision making and down the stretch, he refused to let Elton Brand touch the ball. It was crazy. Andre Miller won that thing for them once they took the ball out of Iggy’s hands.
Detroit defends like that, and it’s curtains.
Chauncey is really good. Damn he’s good.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com H to the Izzo

THe Spurs badly need an injection of youth and shooting.Steph Curry sweepstakes next year or failing that Seth Curry?Dell made some talented and thin children.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

I want so bad to hate on the Nuggets, but I’m glad Chauncey and Nene are succeeding. I don’t appreciate how they cast all the blame on Iverson for their failures, particularly since the 50 wins they had last season were the most he’s had in his tenure as a Nuggets coach, but I can’t deny that they are humming right now with Chauncey at the helm. I’m not surprised they are playing better with a traditional point guard, but I am surprised at how much better they are playing. That said, I still wonder if they get out of the first round.

  • http://danchamb.com.br/Home/ Lz – Cphfinest3

Yeah Izzo, Stephen will be a player after a couple of months on the Eddy Curry-Diet.

TAD, I was one of those rare TO fans that liked both Jose and TJ (which I still dont understand bcos we had the best PG situation the L last season). TJ is playing great, but I still think Jose was the right decision for the way the Raps are going. although we could def. use his scoring right now…or anyones besides CB’s for that matter…..

Danny Granger is a star in the making. He’s already a star level talent, he just needs some more exposure. Gotta love seeing a young guy lead his team to a big win over Kobe and the Fakeshow.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com H to the Izzo

Bryan:Seth Curry might be better than Steph Curry. He probably isn’t but he’s averaging more than Steph was when he was a freshman.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Holly, that Sean Avery sh*t is amazing. There’s apparently talk that this might be the last straw for dude’s career… unreal. Gotta love a league where talking sh*t about some other player’s girlfriend is considered more offensive than hitting him in the face with a wooden stick. What a monumental joke the National Hockey League is.

  • ciolkstar

Iggy has become a bit of a ball hog in the games I’ve watched him play this season. He’s forcing 3s and drives to the hoop and he seriously NEVER passes the rock to Thad Young. I think Iguodala is worried about the young fella taking his shine.’Dre miller might have played well last night but he looks old and slow to me.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Andre Miller has always looked old and slow. It’s why he’s been one the most underrated point guards for nearly a decade.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Remember when Miller refused to dunk in the rookie game? He was old and slow then.

  • FLUXLAND

The Raps continue to be the trainwreck we (some of us) thought they would be. Wonder where the 2nd in the East and Contender talk is now. They’ll be extremely lucky to win a game this month or 30 for the year.

  • http://heavyasheaven.blogspot.com Kid Presto

Thanks Iggy for showing up to the game. oh yeah, Robbie Hummel(Purdue), you are overrated son.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com H to the Izzo

    D(K)P:I disagree on Hummel.

  • http://hibachi20.blosgpot.com Kid Presto

They will win at least 38 to 39 games, Flux. JO and Bosh will carry them once JO is back to full strength.

  • http://hibachi20.blosgpot.com Kid Presto

He is a better version of Duke’s David Mclure…just really a hustle player and Robbie is just in the right place at the right time. Pre-season Big ten player of the year? yeah right. His teammate Moore is more deserving of that title.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com H to the Izzo

A lot of players are better versions of David McClure,Hummel happens to be a far better version of McClure.Hummel is definitely the Big 10′s second best player.Moore is good, but reminds me too much of DeMarcus Nelson.

  • http://hibachi20.blosgpot.com Kid Presto

lol at Izzo. I still don’t believe the hype on this kid. check the blog out and see the little wager me and hummel have going on. He looks like a great guy but he is not that raw to me. Now Johnny Flynn!

  • FLUXLAND

Kid, JO will NEVER, I repeat, NEVER be at full strength. BC traded the wrong guard (as some were screaming in the summer) for damaged goods in JO and the Aussie kid, plus a million other things.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

WTF IS GOING ON WITH DALEMBERT???!!!?? HES NOT EVEN GETTING MINUTES!!!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

We will start with he sucks and then work our way down.

  • http://hibachi20.blosgpot.com Kid Presto

he even sucked on his national team. not worty of minutes.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

KP, I have to side with Izzo on Hummel. To compare him with McClure is flat out, incorrect. Not even close.

Name a weakness in Hummel’s game.
Not that he is “flawless” but still, name one.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cub Buenning

Prof. I have to disagree about the NHL and Avery, as this was far from an isolated incident. By suspending him, the league is protecting his backside.
Dude would have gotten “Bertuzzied” against any team in the league. Guys have been lining up for years to get the chance to take a run at this a-hole. Even his own teammates have wanted to go at him, and he has only been there a couple months.

Avery is an absolute schmuck that doesn’t deserve the opportunity to play, semi-funny “sloppy seconds” comments, aside…..

  • http://heavyasheaven.blogspot.com Kid Presto

okay, so it was a horrible comparision. I’ll give you that. I was thinking about that when I was up at 2:00 am in the morning so I was slipping on that one. But overrated is still the word…until he wins the big ten player of the year or gets first team big ten. period.
