The Post Up: We’ve All Been Rondo’d

And yes, I will miss Sam.

by Holly MacKenzie

Yeah. So, about that Sam Mitchell thing. I pretty much knew that he was done when I saw the press conferences Tuesday night. After speaking to some people in Denver I really knew that it was only a matter of waiting for the announcement to be made, yet when the emails came trickling in to verify that it was official, I still felt ill inside.

I worked another night shift last night and this time I started work as the news about Sam came out. Let me tell you, working in a newsroom of a sports network when something like this goes down is absolute mayhem. It is also amazing and exhilarating and fantastic. I loved every second.

Yesterday was the day I learned and felt the sting of the business side of the NBA. While I don’t want to talk about Sam the coach, I do want to talk about Sam the person. At least, the man I got glimpses of over the past month of this NBA season. He was funny, witty and clever, but it was the stuff that only us writers covering the Raptors on a daily basis would see that I will miss most about Coach Mitchell.

Those rare days when he’d be in a talkative mood and you would end up going through the post shootaround question session and then end up in the hallway for 30 minutes as he held court, telling stories about his playing days. Stories that cannot ever be shared in print and stories that only Sam could tell. He was a brilliant storyteller and I’m happy I got to hear some of his greatest.

At one of our games recently, Sam was in an office off to the side of the media room, ironing his white dress shirt while media members heckled him for it. He took it all in stride, as always.

Most of all, his press conferences will be missed. Never knowing who was going to ask the question that was going to set Sam off. When it came, it was always fun to watch him handle it calmly, coolly, and then watch the poor media member stumble all over themselves trying to smooth the situation over. While I never had that moment myself, I can  promise that it will come when Sam gets his next gig and I can’t wait for it.

The point is, I will miss Sam as a person. We’ve seen him be classy about the situation and this does not surprise me. While I did not know him personally and didn’t really get to know him as well as I would have liked, I have tremendous respect for Sam Mitchell both on and off court and I wish him all of the best in the future although I already know he will be great.

As for Jay Triano, here is hoping he can take this challenge on and do well. I want the Raptors to turn their season around and I’d like to see Jay at the helm succeeding.

And on to the games from last night:

The Cavs throwback jerseys are disgustingly ugly. My fantasy team really loves Rondo tonight.

Boston got revenge over the Pacers for that loss a few weeks back and they had the line of the night from Rondo with his first career triple-double. Not just any puny trip-dub either, 16 points, 13 rebounds and 17 assists. Oh yeah, throw 3 steals in there too. We’ve all been Rondo’d, indeed. Besides Rondo, Ray Allen had 31 points and KG added 26 points and 13 assists. The Celtics are tough to beat on a regular night, when they’ve got Rondo dishing 17 assists and grabbing 13 rebounds, that is just stupid.

Kobe in Philly. Tillery was there. He’s got the goods for us soon. Thank goodness too, because I want to hear from my Lakers. Lakers righted the ship after that loss in Indy and won 114-102. Kob had 32 while Pau scored 22 and grabbed 13 rebounds. Dre Miller had 26 points to lead Philly in the loss.

While the Wizards dropped a 98-92 decision to the Blazers, the effort was there. Brandon Roy had 22 points for the Blazers while Gred Oden scored 13 points while grabbing 10 rebounds as LaMarcus Aldridge added 16. Antawn Jamison led Washington with 22 points while Caron Butler scored 16 points but it wasn’t enough as they could not stop the Blazers and cut their fourth quarter deficit.

While at work, I received an email from Russ that said:

“The Knicks are getting murdered. Quentin Richardson got ejected in the second quarter, and Tim Thomas hyperextended his elbow or something. He’s still plying, though. What a trooper.”

That pretty much sums up that game, by the looks of the box score. It looks as though it was over by the end of the first quarter, and definitely was over at the half with Cleveland leading 61-35. With Bron playing 28 minutes and finishing with 21 points While Ilgauskas scored 14 points to go with 10 rebounds and Mo Williams scored 16, the Cavs continued to roll. Al Harrington had 20 for the Knicks while David Lee had 16 points and 16 rebounds in the loss.

Thanks to 21 points and 10 rebounds from Charlie V, the Bucks took down the Bulls 97-90 last night. While Derrick Rose had 18 points and 9 assists and Luol Deng scored 21, it wasn’t enough for the Bulls who gave up a 35-point second quarter while scoring 22 points of their own in the period.  Luke Ridnour had 12 points and 10 assists for the Bucks as the team had 27 assists on the night.

Houston got another win without Tracy McGrady as they faced the Clippers last night, dropping them to 3-15 on the season. Although Houston jumped out to a double-digit lead after the first quarter, the Clippers rallied back in the third but ran out of gas in the final quarter as Yao Ming’s 24 points and 10 rebounds propelled the Rockets to their 12th victory. Rafer Alston scored 21 points and Ron Artest added 19. Al Thornton scored 24 points for the Clippers while Zach Randolph added 23 points and 11 rebounds and Baron Davis had 13 points and 9 assists. The Rockets attempted 39 free throws as compared to 16 for the Clippers.

MVPOn the second night of a back-to-back the Jazz were unable to find their legs and dropped a 93-89 decision to the Miami Heat. Led by Dwyane Wade’s 23 points, the Heat outrebounded Utah 45-38 and shot 44 percent from the floor while holding the Jazz to only 39% shooting. With Udonis Haslem adding 11 points and 13 rebounds and Shawn Marion scoring 15 points, the Jazz fell just short despite a 20-point, 13-rebound performance from Paul Milsap. Deron Williams had a sub par night, scoring 13 points but having only 5 assists and 6 turnovers.

Bobcats over the Thunder. When will the rain stop in Oklahoma City. Yuck. 25 points and 13 rebounds from Emeka Okafor, 18 points from Jason Richardson and another 12 assist night for Raymond Felton and the Bobcats were too much for the Thunder to handle, defeating them 103-97. Kevin Durant had 24 points for the Thunder, who lost despite shooting 54 percent from the floor.

Jukai: who says a PG needs to aveage 17 ppg to be good. Thats completely arbitrary. He was averaging 12+ pts, 8+ assists, 2+ steals and over 50% FG before last night’s explosion and he’s had a few off nights. I expect those numbers to rise throughout this season. He’s probably not be the best defensive PG in the game but he’s certainly up there.

  • http://fjkdslf.com Jukai

Russ, learn how to spell played and then correct my spelling of basketball players’ names, kk?

  • http://www.mybleedingfingertips.blogspot.com/ Myles Brown

    I really idnt miss you.

  • http://fjkdslf.com Jukai

ciolkstar: A point guard who has no shooting game outside of a layup is a VERY flawed point guard, because this way the person guarding him can play the passing lanes and give him a lot of space. THAT being said, I’m not saying he isn’t a good player. He would be a starter in about 60-75% of the teams in the league. Would he be averaging 10 and 7 with two steals and ANYWHERE NEAR 50% from the floor on another team? No.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

You spelled Kirk’s name right, he’s the one who spells it wrong. I was merely asking who he was.

  • NBK

Jukai i understand where your coming from but saying he is not a good defensive pg because he can’t gaurd guys near the basket? haha that really is not his job, plus he has great length and cannot be posted up or taken down low by many points. The help defender thing is totally bllsht that actually may be the best part of rondo’s game. Remeber the 6 stls in game 6? Those were not on his own man that was called help defense, and i realize he gambles a lot but he does not get torched by other pg’s. And as of right now he is the number 5 ranked defensive player in the NBA.–Basketball refernce.com for the last stat

  • http://fjkdslf.com Jukai

Oh, it’s one of those many layered jokes you throw out, Russ. Always a pleasure.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

I love that we’re debating the bona fides of a point guard who a) was the starter on a championship team last year, and b) just posted a 16/13/17 triple-double. Obviously he sucks.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Rondo is a better passer than Parker, pretty similar in all other areas though. Maybe Rondo can jump better. But also I think tp is who he is now. Rondo is gonna be putting up ridiculous numbers in about 3 years.

  • ciolkstar

I’m a fan of Delonte West but I know for a fact that the Celtics were willing to give him up but WOULD NOT include Rondo in the KG deal. Just a fun fact since you brught him up (although you’re way overrating his defense) Also looking at your list of superior defensive PGs, they’re all guys with broad shoulders and Bogans is a SG. Sure Rondo wont be able to guard guys in the post but that job belongs to Perk and KG anyway. There’s no way you can put Stuckey on that list. Yet. And Hinrich?! are you serious? I’ll let you take that one back…

  • riggs

@CoCo: its not necessarily bad pressure, but its pressure nonetheless, when you have kg and pierces mouths along with rays “look” then you have to maintain them happy while also trying to run plays and look out for the D, they were calling this kid the celts huge flaw all last year til he proved them wrong on every occasion. of course he still has a way to go but damn it was his first year of being the leading PG in the nba and he did an excellent job in my opinion.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Rus: chris duhon is no chris duhon.

  • riggs

and by leading PG in the nba i mean on a nba team.

  • ciolkstar

I’m thankful that SLAMonline gives me a place to rant about how great Rondo is and even has a Jukai to make brutally dumb arguments for me to slice into little pieces.

  • http://fjkdslf.com Jukai

NBK: He’s a good defensive point guard. He’s also overrated defensively because of his team. Also, because game six, Rondo averaged less than a steal a game in that series, so that’s not a terribly good example. I’m also mystified at how he’s ranked number 5 but I’ll check it out if I can find it on the website.
Ciolkstar: Hinrich was considered the next up-and-coming player, VERY similar to Rondo two years ago. Except he had a jump shot. He never improved (actually got worse). Still, the dude is was a beast in the one-on-one.
I never blame a player for gambling on defense for steals if they average two steals a game.

  • http://fjkdslf.com Jukai

Ciolkstar: Delonte West is KILLING right now in Cleveland, on a team far deeper at the one spot (three point guards) than the Celtics are (one point guard and a shooting guard who for some reason plays the one).
I was wondering if I should point out how you declared a portion of defense to be “Garnett and Perkins” job, which is one of my points, how a lot of defensive needs Rondo doesn’t need to worry about because of the Celtics defense. Of course, you’ve ignored it thus far, not sure why you’ll acknowledge it now.

  • NBK

Wait totally my bad he is the number 3 ranked defender in the nba according to basketball reference and last season he was number 8. Oh and also rajon rondo is the only pg in the top 10 this year and last year

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com H to the Izzo

Delonte West’s numbers will always be better than his actual play.(Keep in mind that this is coming from a card carrying Delonte fan)

  • NBK

Whether or not delonte west is killin right now does not mean he is a better defender then rondo either. And if you want to try and use big men to shore up why rondo is overrated west has a 3 time defensive player of the year and a 7’2 center backing him up.

  • NBK

And what hinrich was 2 years ago means jack to me, i know how good he was and how good he was supposed to be, but he is not as good of a defender as rondo

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Is Rajon Rondo the… new, skinny Jason Kidd?

  • NBK

jason kidd is far and away a better passer then rondo. offensively it is not even close

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

One could argue that keeping three future Hall of Famers happy is a more difficult job than, say, distributing to a bunch of guys who are just expiring-contracts-to-be. One could also argue that having a big-time post defender behind you doesn’t necessarily mean you can just let guys go by you or carelessly gamble on steals all the time, no matter what Allen Iverson does. One could also argue that Rajon Rondo has been more or less the perfect point guard for the Celtics. But why argue?

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

I think Rondo isn’t there YET. But with the luxury of the Big Three on his team, he has another few years to take his time to develop into a force. Tony Parker himself was a quick little guy with a ton of weaknesses and couldn’t shoot for nuts his first coupla years, and only became a true force in 2005 or so.

  • NBK

Yeah but Jason Kidd? He was literally a take any team in the league deep into the playoffs in his prime-rondo will never ever be that good

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ Moose

YOU JUST GOT RONDO’D. What have I been trying to tell you guys about Rondo for the whole season? *gets up and does end zone victory dance*.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

I dunno, look at Jason Kidd’s numbers his first coupla seasons in the league, and compare them to what Rondo’s putting up now. Adjusted for minutes or not, pretty close. And yeah, numbers aside, how many PGs can you name who could helm a championship team just a year or three into the league? Off the top of my head, only Magic Johnson and Sam Cassell come to mind. Like it or not, whatever his weaknesses, Rondo’s in pretty lofty company already, or we wouldn’t even be having this discussion.

  • Jackie Moon

    Numbers Lie.

  • http://www.myfreesport.com LexaB

Rondo is pretty good and will improve a lot, you have to be GOOD to pull some ridiculous line like this, even with all those HOFs around him with the C’s!!! But I’m also down with the idea that he would have a hard time pulling up the same numbers in a weaker team… Think I still need time and games to really make my mind about him. Cause even if this will seem crazy for you guys, we actually have the possibility to wait a little more before rising him to superstar status or burrying him down the ground…

  • http://slamonline.com Holly MacKenzie

Russ, you spelled “played” correctly, although you did type “something” wrong. hahah. Sorry for the plyed typo. Definitely came from being awake all night!

  • http://www.myfreesport.com LexaB

Joel : one name also comes to my mind… Tony Parker in ‘O3 Spurs championship run !!! And the TP-RR comparaisons continue…

  • Nbk

How many 2nd yr pgs get to play with three of the top 15-20 players in the league? That’s why rondo has a ring if rondo were Jason kiddesque pierce garnett and Allen would have put up 20 a game each. Rondo would never take a team with guys like Kerry kittles and kenyon martin to the finals. He does not merit Jason Kidd comparisons Kidd is top 5 pg’s ever

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

I think it would be difficult for Rondo if those three Superstars were maybe Kobe Shaq and Amare, but the trio he has is somewhat selfless. As much as I dislike the Celtics I honestly believe this group is primarily concerned about winning and they don’t care how they do it. I just don’t think Rondo wakes up with a woe is me attitude worrying about keeping those three happy. I don’t think he feels the type of pressure that people keep implying.

  • ciolkstar

I LOVE that this Rondo debate is raging on. And I definitely hear you Jukai (regarding team defenses’ effect on the PG)
Russ: “One could also argue that Rajon Rondo has been more or less the perfect point guard for the Celtics”
This is my point exactly! If Rondo could shoot I dont think he’d be as good because he would settle for jumpers instead of constantly probing, looking for the open man and getting easy layups.

  • ciolkstar

I think CO Co is right about Rondo not feeling “pressured” to keep those guys happy. Not to say that anyone one of those 3 wouldn’t shoot a look at him that says “WTF are you doing?” if they felt that way. KG and the Celtics really ride for their teammates, and I bet they’re all happy to let Rondo get some shine. Especially if that translates to winning basketball, which it has thus far.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    Meh.

  • ciolkstar

TAD: Would you rather have Rondo or Stuckey? I’m a huge Stuckey fan too, and think he’s got a bright, Chauncey-like, future…but who would you rather have today?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    I’d rather have Paul.

  • ciolkstar

Now, THAT deserves a “Meh”. I’m trying to keep the Rondo debate going.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I don’t see a debate. Then again, I don’t really like Rondo. So to answer your question: Stuckey.

  • http://fdjslkf.com Jukai

I’d rather have Stuckey too. Point guards that can’t shoot ten feet out? Sorry, none of that for me.
I’ve already pointed out a thousand and one times that Rondo is PERFECT for the Celtics though. Someone made a great point: if he had a jump shot, he’d probably want to use it more, instead of finding weaknesses through all the double teams and keeping the defense spread.

  • thebigticket05

for the record KG had 26 pts and 14 REBOUNDS not 13 assists…would’ve been nice tho.

  • Phil B

i know we’re past thanksgiving, but i sure am thankful there are only two guys in the league who have figured out how to even relatively stop roy’s drives. oh and i love rondo. the celtics are gonna be a super tough game for the blazers. kg will be in super-douche mode to try and get in the youngin’s heads.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Jukai, your list of point guards better than Rondo defensively is just bad.
    I expect better from you.
    Fisher?
Did you see what Iverson did to Fisher? That did not happen to Rondo.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com H to the Izzo

But then again TAD,you don’t see an argument between Paul and Deron, which makes you a dummy.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

I’d rather have Rondo over STuckey.
Stuckey shoots a tad bit too much and doesn’t see the floor as well.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

i missed the memo last year, but where does “being rondo’d” come from?

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

    Cleveland is taking it.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    Who is giving it?
