What We Have Here … Is a Failure to Communicate

by Marcel Mutoni

It’s no secret that JR Smith and his coach, George Karl, have had their share of clashes over the years. What is less known, up until this point anyway, is how little the two communicate.

Apparently, the two don’t so much as say hello to one another.

From the Rocky Mountain News:

“J.R. is a good-bad player, and we’re trying to take the bad out and magnify the good,” Karl said. “For me, there’s, as the game goes on, there’s a lot of ways I can try to win them. And consistency, defense and a positive, good attitude would keep him on the court. But I don’t think he gives us always those three every night we play. Some nights I’ll tolerate his bad and some nights I’m probably going to go someplace else.”

“We never talk,” Smith said. “I wish (the two could). You never want to not even talk to your coach. It’s been like that since I got here… (Karl) and I have been (battling) for a couple of years, but hopefully we’ll kiss and make up soon.”

Despite the lack of communication with his head coach, Smith is actually enjoying more playing time this season than he’s ever had as a member of the Denver Nuggets. And though his scoring has seen a slight dip, rebounding and assists are up.

Talking is overrated, anyway.

George Karl is a horrible coach. Any other coach would get a lot out of a talent like Smith. I really wish he’d been traded to the Spurs. Pop would’ve utilized him much better. He was the only guy who stood up against the Lakers in the playoffs and that was with AI and Melo on his team. How much more positivity can you ask for? Plus George Karl is talking about consistency on the NUGGETS? And defense? I know they’ve buckled down a bit with Billups but damn…

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Dec.1 at 12:06 pm
That needs to be corrected, as JR is a huge piece of the team’s future.

  • riggs Posted: Dec.1 at 12:20 pm
jr smith has a horrible attitude most times and so does karl

  • B. Long Posted: Dec.1 at 12:20 pm
Who cares? Where is the LeBron vs. Sir Charles story at?

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.1 at 12:23 pm
George Karl is like a stubborn girlfriend.

  • Allenp Posted: Dec.1 at 12:28 pm
George Karl is a cantankerous old man. Nothing more, nothing less. He’s unhappy damn near all the time.
Am I the only who has noticed this?

  • riggs Posted: Dec.1 at 12:42 pm
no but good use of cantankerous, now lets see who can use nefarious next

  • Holly MacKenzie Posted: Dec.1 at 12:52 pm
I’m with you, Cub. Is the dynamic between the two really that bad?

  • what Posted: Dec.1 at 12:53 pm
George Karl looks like Georgia governor Sonny Perdue, and both appear to be equally incompetent.

  • Boing Dynasty Posted: Dec.1 at 12:53 pm
Has anyone else noticed JR Smith is a beast in NBA2K9?

  • ciolkstar Posted: Dec.1 at 1:21 pm
Talk is cheap. JR doesn’t even look at Karl when he’s talking to his players during a timeout. I laugh just thinking about how it would be if JR wound up battling Popp in SA…

  • niQ Posted: Dec.1 at 1:27 pm
    kiss and make up. haha.

  • Allenp Posted: Dec.1 at 1:37 pm
    Boing
JR is outstanding on 2K9. He’s probably better than Melo on that game.

  • cool hand luke Posted: Dec.1 at 1:45 pm
no man can eat 40 eggs! Except for Eddy Curry.

  • KA Posted: Dec.1 at 1:56 pm
we dont need to civil woar!

  • Spaceship Jay Posted: Dec.1 at 2:24 pm
Yes I’ve noticed. I tried to shoot a 3 with him, and he dunked on 3 oppossing players instead.

  • LA Huey Posted: Dec.1 at 2:41 pm
Karl still has a job? Geez…

  • Boing Dynasty Posted: Dec.1 at 2:47 pm
Allen, no question. Melo is the 2nd option after they start double teaming JR.

  • Boing Dynasty Posted: Dec.1 at 2:48 pm
Gerald Green was like that on 2K8.

  • jljl Posted: Dec.1 at 2:55 pm
JR has been playing good lately i wish he would get more time

  • Theo Papaloukas Posted: Dec.1 at 3:17 pm
@Allenp….:”JR is outstanding on 2K9. He’s probably better than Melo on that game.” You revealed something about yourself with that comment, I’m glad I was able to read it.!(!!!)

  • riggs Posted: Dec.1 at 3:26 pm
@Boing: he’s in my association team and hes like a mini lebron (also so is josh smith who’s also on my team….with lebron)

  • rollezed Posted: Dec.1 at 3:30 pm
i agree about that 2k9 thing. couple of days ago i shot 6-6 from downtown and made some other crazy plays with him on a live game.

  • drayton Posted: Dec.1 at 3:34 pm
if u ask me, kyle korver is the best in 2k9. one night i shot triples 14-24 and i scored 46. u should definitely try him if u haven’t.

  • Z Posted: Dec.1 at 3:40 pm
Karl is a b-tch. No serious. How can you even look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself that you’re a good coach when one of your main players acknowledges that he has NO RELATION with you? Isn’t that a huge part of your job description?!

  • Allenp Posted: Dec.1 at 3:43 pm
    Paps
If you didn’t know I played video games then you haven’t been paying attention.
But, I figured you already had me pegged as one of your “video game kids” anyway, since I had the temerity to disagree with you.
Anyway, J.R. Smith is good on 2K9 if a real person is playing him, but when the computer plays with him he plays exactly the way he plays in real life. Random threes and stupid passes.

  • buddy Posted: Dec.1 at 3:49 pm
Hmm. Looks like I’ll have to make some trades happen to get JR to the warriors, along with Derrick Rose.

  • Theo Papaloukas Posted: Dec.1 at 3:53 pm
@Allenp….:i didn’t know and i read most of your comments since i like the way it seems that you try really hard to analize-understand everything rationally(unfortunatelly i used to do this all the time when i was younger…). I didn’t have you on my list of “video game kids” and i won’t put you now either….(except if you start making arguments on players value based on meaningless regular season stats… )

  • ciolkstar Posted: Dec.1 at 3:54 pm
JR won’t even make eye contact with Karl. I dont think he’s a great coach by any stretch and I think he really mismanaged AI and Melo and set a poor precedent for JR, who’s been GK’s whipping boy, right or wrong, for 2 years; When there were plenty of other problems going unaddressed. Now JR doesn’t trust (or respect)Karl, which IS partially GK’s fault…

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Dec.1 at 4:21 pm
More negative claims about George Karl are made by people who(m) have never met him/ever even been around the coach….. Dude wins over 60% of his games as a Nuggets’ coach (and a better percentage each year) and he is continually shat upon. You all give professional sports coaches too much credit!

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Dec.1 at 4:22 pm
Holly, I haven’t been around the team much this year, so my claims about their current relationship would be without base (SEE HOW THAT WORKS, PEOPLE!!!)

  • MeloMan13 Posted: Dec.1 at 4:40 pm
i still think they shud fire Karl but ill hold on to him while i enjoy their recent success
…..and Jr is a beast in dat game, as well as real life

  • TADOne Posted: Dec.1 at 5:05 pm
Geaorge Karl is a petulent old man with a bad attitude and coaching has passed him by (that was for Cub). :)

  • Allenp Posted: Dec.1 at 5:11 pm
    Cub
You’re right that I’ve never met Karl. But, I’ve watched him behave over the years and he just seems unhappy when he’s coaching.
Maybe it’s the players, maybe it’s his own life, but he doesn’t seem to take joy in what he’s doing. He looks pained.
And, I’m already on record as saying that I have a problem with coaches who use the media to berate and demean their players.

  • Bubba Chuck Posted: Dec.1 at 5:16 pm
he played amazing a couple nites ago vs. new orleans

  • Moose Posted: Dec.1 at 6:15 pm
JR probably should have used different language than “we’ll kiss and make up” . . . .

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Dec.1 at 6:18 pm
True on the media piece, Allenp, but name a coach that looks happy while doing THAT job.
IMO, every coach has that “you’re next Mr. Karl” look from the proctologist’s waiting room. It’s not the most comfortable job, when your security is based on others’ performances. To be honest, I’m not a huge Karl guy, in general, but the amount of heat he takes on this site is bothersome.

  • Moose Posted: Dec.1 at 6:22 pm
BTW, new stuff just got dropped on Hibachi 2.0. It’s my first serious writing piece in a little while, so everyone should click my name, read and comment.

  • GGG Posted: Dec.1 at 6:54 pm
End of the Day, Karl is the boss. JR needs to suck it up, improve his bball IQ and do more of the little things (i.e. anything other than jack up 3’s). Guy has tremendous talent thats not being used.

  • Theo Papaloukas Posted: Dec.1 at 7:23 pm
@GGG….:”we use only 5% of our brain!!!”

  • mack Posted: Dec.1 at 8:08 pm
they ought to trade J.R. for some a post presence

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Dec.1 at 8:10 pm
George Karl would happily sit and talk basketball for hours. He’s a guy who’s given his life to the game. He played for Dean Smith, played for the Spurs, coached the Bucks to the Eastern Conference Finals and the Sonics to the Finals. Gary Payton gives him a tremendous amount of credit. Call me crazy, but it seems like J.R. would benefit from listening to him, even if he has to be the one to break the ice. If either of them has anything to prove, it’s J.R. What’s he ever done that makes him so special?

  • king of 2k9 Posted: Dec.1 at 9:17 pm
jr smith do be beastin in 2k9

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Dec.1 at 9:31 pm
    Well put, Russ.
    Thank you.

  • Mavus Posted: Dec.1 at 9:42 pm
George Karl won’t be there much longer… If they are smart, they will try to get J.R. a bigger part.. DID YOU SEE THE LAST GAME AGAINST CHARLOTTE? He damn near carried them on his back till Karl took him out for some STRANGE reason.. put him back in, he hit a big three, but it was too late… J.R. is rough around the edges but you have to mode that type talent! NOT TALKING IS GOING TO HELP!!!

  • Mavus Posted: Dec.1 at 9:43 pm
    HELP KARL GET FIRED!!!!! LMAO!!!!!!!!!!

  • DellaBalla Posted: Dec.1 at 9:54 pm
I think the only people who have a legit case to make here are the ones who have had Karl as a coach to their team. I am a huge Nuggets fan and there are a few things I can tell you about Karl. One, is that he is not happy coaching. He is a grump and could rival Stephon Marbury and Shaquille O’Neal for the biggest ego’s in the NBA. Two, he has player he likes and he has players he dislikes (i.e. JR Smith). The players he likes he plays no matter what. Doesn’t matter if they cost us the game if he likes them he plays them and shows them respect. For the players he dislikes he practically shuns and treats like crap (i.e. Ray Allen & JR). Doesn’t matter how good they are he if he makes up his mind that he doesn’t like them it’s over for them. Three, although I hate to say it, he really is a good coach. If he wasn’t he wouldn’t have such an accomplished carreer. The thing is that he is so unconventional in certain ways (i.e. lineups, player relationships, attitude toward his job, ect) that he is in a way self destructive and can never really get his players and himself on the same page. Still, I think his more passionate years are behind him. I’m not sure if he got fired or retired he would bust a Larry Brown and come back because he misses it so much. Still he has really done something this season and if JR had half a brain he would just fall in line with Chauncy and listen to Karl.

  • kostas Posted: Dec.2 at 1:07 am
nice tribute to guns n roses :P

  • nastierthanyou Posted: Dec.2 at 8:30 am
@della balla. Gotta agree with you there. Karl is from the old school and like Larry Brown he has Dean Smith ties being that he was a baller @ Carolina. Karl knows his x’s and o’s and JR has incredible talent. Jr just needs to fall in line. I hope Billups can help him. I thought that after that car accident he would really mellow out and accept certain things. He’s still a young guy and has plenty of time, but he is seriously talented.

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Dec.2 at 8:56 am
Della, I am curious to find out who(m) you think that Coach Karl “likes.” A bit distracting when you discount yourself in your lengthy comment’s very first sentence. Unless, of course, your name really is Greg Buckner or something….

  • Allenp Posted: Dec.2 at 10:43 am
Just for the record, coaches are not players’ bosses. They do not have hiring or firing power. They can hand out assignments and they are charged with a supervisory role, but in the strict sense they are not bosses. They are more like partners and associates in a law firm. A partner can tell associates what to do, but typically, a single partner cannot fire an associate.
Coaches are charged with motivating their players and putting them in the correct positions on the court to succeed. If a coach fails at either of those things, then the organization needs to consider terminating him.
Do we really think that the Nuggets turnaround is because Karl is a great coach, or is it because Chauncey is a great leader?

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Dec.2 at 3:50 pm
I don’t look at a coach as a boss, but more like a conductor. The players are the, well, players. And it’s up to the coach to find a way for them to make music. They are limited in their powers, and are often the first to go when the melody falters. They have to be teachers, counselors, father figures (in some cases), and oh yes, basketball geniuses. You couldn’t pay me enough.

  • Shannon Booher Posted: Dec.2 at 3:57 pm
There’s only one thing to say to this… FREE J.R. SMITH!!!!!

  • Allenp Posted: Dec.2 at 5:37 pm
    Russ
You made me rethink something I’ve said in the past. You do have to be a basketball genius to be a coach. In the past I’ve accused Karl of being stupid and that’s not fair. He has to have a pretty good basketball IQ to be a coach. At the very least he’s far more knowledgable than most fans realize. So, I’m going to stop saying that.

  • 007 Posted: Dec.2 at 5:38 pm
Cub is right most of us here..yeah including me..don’t spend a fraction of the time with these dudes were talking about. Haha..we base our opinions thoroughly on what we see on the games and d talks circulating in media.
Does this mean that yes were a fan..and we have too much (worthless) time in our hands. haha
