It’s no secret that JR Smith and his coach, George Karl, have had their share of clashes over the years. What is less known, up until this point anyway, is how little the two communicate.
Apparently, the two don’t so much as say hello to one another.
From the Rocky Mountain News:
“J.R. is a good-bad player, and we’re trying to take the bad out and magnify the good,” Karl said. “For me, there’s, as the game goes on, there’s a lot of ways I can try to win them. And consistency, defense and a positive, good attitude would keep him on the court. But I don’t think he gives us always those three every night we play. Some nights I’ll tolerate his bad and some nights I’m probably going to go someplace else.”
“We never talk,” Smith said. “I wish (the two could). You never want to not even talk to your coach. It’s been like that since I got here… (Karl) and I have been (battling) for a couple of years, but hopefully we’ll kiss and make up soon.”
Despite the lack of communication with his head coach, Smith is actually enjoying more playing time this season than he’s ever had as a member of the Denver Nuggets. And though his scoring has seen a slight dip, rebounding and assists are up.
Talking is overrated, anyway.

Am I the only who has noticed this?
JR is outstanding on 2K9. He’s probably better than Melo on that game.
If you didn’t know I played video games then you haven’t been paying attention.
But, I figured you already had me pegged as one of your “video game kids” anyway, since I had the temerity to disagree with you.
Anyway, J.R. Smith is good on 2K9 if a real person is playing him, but when the computer plays with him he plays exactly the way he plays in real life. Random threes and stupid passes.
…..and Jr is a beast in dat game, as well as real life
You’re right that I’ve never met Karl. But, I’ve watched him behave over the years and he just seems unhappy when he’s coaching.
Maybe it’s the players, maybe it’s his own life, but he doesn’t seem to take joy in what he’s doing. He looks pained.
And, I’m already on record as saying that I have a problem with coaches who use the media to berate and demean their players.
IMO, every coach has that “you’re next Mr. Karl” look from the proctologist’s waiting room. It’s not the most comfortable job, when your security is based on others’ performances. To be honest, I’m not a huge Karl guy, in general, but the amount of heat he takes on this site is bothersome.
Thank you.
Coaches are charged with motivating their players and putting them in the correct positions on the court to succeed. If a coach fails at either of those things, then the organization needs to consider terminating him.
Do we really think that the Nuggets turnaround is because Karl is a great coach, or is it because Chauncey is a great leader?
You made me rethink something I’ve said in the past. You do have to be a basketball genius to be a coach. In the past I’ve accused Karl of being stupid and that’s not fair. He has to have a pretty good basketball IQ to be a coach. At the very least he’s far more knowledgable than most fans realize. So, I’m going to stop saying that.
Does this mean that yes were a fan..and we have too much (worthless) time in our hands. haha
