Charles Barkley To Take Leave of Absence

by Ryne Nelson

Charles Barkley will take a minimum of several weeks away from the broadcast booth to deal with legal issues related to his Dec. 31 arrest.

At the time of his New Year’s Eve arrest, Barkley admitted to the police that he had had a “couple” of drinks. Barkley had a blood-alcohol level of .149, nearly twice the legal limit of .08.

USA Today quotes David Levy, president of TNT Sports:

“I have spoken with Charles Barkley regarding the incident…and I understand he has hired a lawyer to represent him regarding this matter. When I spoke with Charles, he was apologetic for the events that transpired and it was obvious he understands the significance of the situation. This is an important time for Charles as he deals with the legal and personal issues that confront him. Charles is a valued part of the Turner Sports organization and we are concerned for his well-being.”

It goes without saying that Inside the NBA will not be the same without Chuck. Hopefully he straightens his life up and gets back there soon.

A return date has not been set.

    CHUCK COME BACK!

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 5:12 pm
“Straightens his life up”? Um, the man is 45 years old. If he hasn’t figured it out by now, he probably never will. And yes, I’m speaking from experience.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 5:14 pm
Honestly, if he REALLY wants to turn things around, he should take the rest of the season off and start some sort of rehab immediately. Maybe even walk away entirely. Because his whole professional life seems to be a big case of enabling.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 5:15 pm
I just don’t want to read about him dying—or even worse, killing someone else—in some stupid accident. Sigh.

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: Jan.9 at 5:17 pm
Russ, do you really think Barkley’s condition is that drastic?

  • jdfs Posted: Jan.9 at 5:18 pm
sounds like he’s a messed up kinda dude

  • ML Posted: Jan.9 at 5:22 pm
What the hell is Barkley doing at a night club? The man is 45. And you can’t say this was a New Year’s thing. He was arrested on the morning of the 31st.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 5:25 pm
Ryne, yes. Not that I know him well or anything, but given his lifestyle and income, do you think he just happened to get pulled over the ONLY time he was driving after having a couple?

  • Moose Posted: Jan.9 at 5:27 pm
ML, Barkley is not your average 45 year old. Remember the reason for his crash (barring the alcohol)? Who knows what he was doing at the night club, he’s Charles Barkley.

  • Joey Posted: Jan.9 at 5:27 pm
    damn

  • t-rocc Posted: Jan.9 at 5:30 pm
damn. i was wondering what next Thursday was going to be like. hadn’t really thought about him taking time off. i hope he gets things moving in the right direction and returns soon!

  • BETCATS Posted: Jan.9 at 5:31 pm
in history of tv fat men are always funnier/stupider than the rest. Homer Simpson, Eric Cartman and Peter Griffin all show us that. Charles Barkley was right their with them, sad to see this fall from glory glory hallelujah.

  • BETCATS Posted: Jan.9 at 5:32 pm
…because i just learned Moose knows all about nightclubs from this!

  • RayRayJr Posted: Jan.9 at 5:32 pm
Wow Russ that’s pretty heavy. Your basically calling him a raging alcoholic. He just likes to have a good time. Drinking and driving is bad and DUIs suck but a ton of people drink and drive and don’t get caught. He did…
The thing is that these players or people that make his kind of money are gonna party regardless just like the rest of us. They just need to hire drivers. They make enough money for personal trainers and chefs so why not a driver? Safest bet

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 5:33 pm
I really like “he was apologetic for the events that transpired and it was obvious he understands the significance of the situation.” Um, well, yeah? HE GOT ARRESTED. He’d have to be a real moron to not understand the significance of the situation. I mean, would he have felt like that if no one stopped him? I’m not saying he should be fired or anything, but it sounds like he could use a serious vacation from being “Charles Barkley.”

  • Allen Walker Posted: Jan.9 at 5:34 pm
Man Chuck just got caught up… It was New Years and he was getting it in… He should have had a driving, but obviously he was on a solo mission. I hope he gets back to the booth ASAP… He’s the only real legend in broadcast Television. Period.

  • BETCATS Posted: Jan.9 at 5:38 pm
Russ just reminded me why the commenting section exsits.

  • rav Posted: Jan.9 at 5:39 pm
    NOOOOOO!!!!!!!

  • Moose Posted: Jan.9 at 5:47 pm
Funny, BET. You know I’m right.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 5:50 pm
I wouldn’t say he’s a “raging alcoholic,” but it’s pretty obvious that dude’s got issues. But hey, by all means let’s just rush him back to TV so we can all laugh at him and pretend nothing happened. It’s just boys being boys, right? DWIs are funny.

  • Wiz Posted: Jan.9 at 5:53 pm
    OVER RE-ACTING people!!!!!!

  • G8RS Posted: Jan.9 at 5:54 pm
I’m glad Barkley is apologetic about the whole thing, that’s a sign that he is a good man. It’s gonna be weird without him. So…who’s gonna take his place while he’s out?

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 5:54 pm
Anyway, yeah, I’m probably just overreacting. Feel free to ignore everything I said in this post.

  • rav Posted: Jan.9 at 5:55 pm
out of interest whats the typical punishment for a dui of that level (i.e. that amount over the limit) in arizona? and not that i’m defending him here, but he’s not the only person who was driving whilst knowing that they were over the limit (from what I understand the legal limit is something like 2 bottles of bud, so he’s had roughly 4/5 bud’s based on that, so its not as if he was totally hammered)

  • rav Posted: Jan.9 at 5:55 pm
wont they just get C-webb to replace him?

  • Anton Posted: Jan.9 at 6:01 pm
I sincerely hope he found that girl that gave him the best head of his life. A man is entitled to that.

  • RayRayJr Posted: Jan.9 at 6:02 pm
First time offense is probably probation, a fine and mb community service. He hired a lawyer so it might get knocked down to a PI

  • Diesel Posted: Jan.9 at 6:04 pm
Russ is right, the man has an extremely addictive personality. He’s lost millions gambling and we all laughed cause its the Chuckster. I don’t see him as the type of person being able to have a few drinks and stop. The man threw someone through a window while drinking! Yeah, get him off the road and help before he hurts someone else or himself.

  • dma Posted: Jan.9 at 6:05 pm
what the hell does “take a minimum of several weeks” mean?

  • RayRayJr Posted: Jan.9 at 6:05 pm
@Anton: She better have been the one who picked him up from jail. I mean he went to jail for that so that’s the least she could do

  • bob Posted: Jan.9 at 6:06 pm
russ u must be some stuck up nerd, he needs to turn his life around? he got wheres hes at because of who he is and his character an outspoken, gambling fun guy.. that why hes friends wtih all the legends

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 6:08 pm
Wojnarowski’s column on Yahoo! was pretty on-point. I just feel sorry for Chuck at this point, and it’s pretty depressing.

  • Bballrehab Posted: Jan.9 at 6:09 pm
That’s just Chuck being Chuck, nothing new. Obviously, he has too much time on his hands since he has retired. But hey, it’s “only” alcohol and gambling; no drugs, no sex scandals, no guns possession, no wife-beating. I think he’s doing all-right for an ex NBA-Star, right Fast Eddie?

  • ciolkstar Posted: Jan.9 at 6:14 pm
With Charles’ size it would likely take more than 4-5 beers to get him up to .146, and just judging by the fact that he admitted he was heading to a booty call, I’d say he was pretty crunk. Part of me wants to see him back on TNT as soon as possible, but that might not be the best thing for him. Although, what is going to do with all his time now? Lots and lots of free time usually isn’t the best thing to mix with subatnce abuse and gambling problems. Regardless, best wishes Charles!

  • Anton Posted: Jan.9 at 6:17 pm
@RayRayJr - for sure. That’s the best comfort he could possibly get right now.

  • what Posted: Jan.9 at 6:21 pm
DUI’s ain’t no joke. Good to see him getting some help. Maybe this means some TNT face time for the Payton/Webber duo on NBA TV?

  • Chief Kickingstallionsims Posted: Jan.9 at 6:51 pm
    Governor of Alabama?!

  • Bulldog Posted: Jan.9 at 6:54 pm
Alcohol, gambling, food and sex. Oh well, how hard would it be to become addicted to these things once you become rich and famous? Get well soon, Chuck and travel by Limo from here on out.

  • Jr. Ellis Posted: Jan.9 at 7:08 pm
I WATCH TNT ALL THE TIME AND LISTEN TO HIM DOWNGRADING OTHER GUYS WHEN THEY MAKE A STUPID MISTAKE CALLING THEM DUMBASS,STUPIDASS,JUST PLAIN STUPID. SO THE QUESTION IS WHAT ARE YOU CHARLES? AND YOU WERE RIGHT CHARLES YOU ARE NOT A ROLE MODEL…

  • Hugo Posted: Jan.9 at 7:27 pm
inside the nba just lost a bunch of viewers…barkley is the soul of that crew

  • rav Posted: Jan.9 at 7:35 pm
i think melo got very little for his dui ($1k fine and a day’s community service) so i doubt he’d get more, unless the throwing the guy out of the window incident comes back to harm him

  • Rubens Posted: Jan.9 at 7:41 pm
man, the hatefull comments at USA today are crazy…

  • 007 Posted: Jan.9 at 8:50 pm
nah this is nothin..dui-alcohol. who doesn’t get drunk..?

  • Eric Woodyard Posted: Jan.9 at 9:27 pm
It looks like he been standing in the rain on his mugshot..lol

  • bone Posted: Jan.9 at 9:38 pm
This whole situation can only help his political aspirations. After all, we love our flawed (to a point, Bush) leaders and political scandals in this country.

  • CP34MVP Posted: Jan.9 at 11:15 pm
he’s Charles *&^%$#@$$(()) Barkley, For God’s sake do you expect Chuck to be clean. Especially on New Years Eve. THey kick him off TNT half their NBA audience dissapears with him.

  • Z Posted: Jan.9 at 11:26 pm
DUI is serious, guys. Lives can be lost over this. There is no reason to get behind the wheel, none. I hope Chuck gets some help. Well first, I hope that he acknowledges that he has a problem.

  • Jacob Posted: Jan.10 at 12:26 am
man now we have to wait for kenny to heckle chuck about this

  • tealish Posted: Jan.10 at 4:17 am
    Russ gets it.

  • BOSTONBALLER Posted: Jan.10 at 7:53 am
#1 I’m not a big drinker (1 or 2 at most #2 Drinking and driving is dumb and dangerous point blank #3 Does the Breathalyzer detect blood levels or strong smell? #4 Everyone who is pulled over for a DUI has a problem (I’m not saying he doesn’t b/c I don’t know him personally) #5 being 45 and going to a club isn’t too strange..they food could be as good as the women #6 If he wasn’t a “celebrity” this wouldn’t matter to the media #7 It’s said he has a gambling problem..his $500 bet is our $5 bet, what do you want a rich person to do in a casino play the 25 cent slots? People sitting at his table are rich so you match their bets..it’s probably more of a competitive problem than gambling. #8 As far as throwing a guy through a window, how many of us honestly wouldn’t have (or wanted to) done the same to a guy who reportedly started and escalated the incident? Again we only remember the parts we want to. #9 As far as him telling the cops WHY he ran the stop sign, I don’t believe it was the alcohol talking, it was Barkley speaking his mind candidly as usual. #10 I don’t think Russ B. is not over reacting, he is simply being passionate about what he feels. i just pray that Barkley doesn’t have a problem and it was a case of The mouth had a few drinks and wanted some head so he stupidly jumped behind the wheel. #11 How many of you who have criticized him gotten behind the wheel after having “a few drinks”? You may not have been drunk or impaired by any reason but if you were pulled over your blood alcohol level would have been too high? Have MY Celtics been drinking as of late? T. Crook

  • Hursty Posted: Jan.10 at 10:21 am
    New stuff on hibachi!

  • Tommy Patron Posted: Jan.10 at 11:49 am
What a d*ck. Inside the NBA is better off without him.

  • Roy Posted: Jan.10 at 12:05 pm
Chuck, you’re still the man in my book… :D

  • Yassi Posted: Jan.10 at 1:35 pm
@Ryne: its always the same with people that have those problems (alcohol, drugs, gambling etc.) both they and the people around them always think (for years!) thats its not that drastic……

  • Yassi Posted: Jan.10 at 1:37 pm
And no Russ isnt over-reacting. History shows that its almost always the case that people are “under-reacting”.
    Human nature, I guess…..

  • Josh D Posted: Jan.10 at 3:07 pm
You’re right inside the NBA woon’t be the same

  • Josh D Posted: Jan.10 at 3:07 pm
You’re right inside the NBA won’t be the same

  • Eric B Posted: Jan.10 at 5:35 pm
Now there is a big dude that never grew up. He wife is probably thinking of leaving him, and taking half the belonging with her. Time for this guy to find some religion.

  • BOSTONBALLER Posted: Jan.11 at 7:28 am
I’m just glad he doesn’t seem to be as bad as Golfer John Daly….another over weight “funny” guy in the limelight.

  • grillzboy224 Posted: Jan.11 at 10:34 am
now my lawyer could score 45 on ya!

  • Harlem_World Posted: Jan.11 at 2:59 pm
Drinking and driving is playing russian roulette with OTHER peoples lives. Nobody can laugh that off.

  • hush D Posted: Jan.11 at 4:31 pm
Russ is a good boy. Russ has never been arrested. Russ never drinks too much and if he does, he never drives. Russ would never ask a woman to suck his d*ck. Russ is a very good boy. That said, people, America drinks and drives. Barkley, pass the keys, hire a driver. She can suck it while he drives you around and you can drink as much as you want. GOD BLESS.

  • arthur Posted: Jan.12 at 11:07 am
hush d, what the f*ck are you talking about?
