Doc Rivers on Fellow Coaches’ All-Star Hypocrisy

by Marcel Mutoni

While Ben Wallace was busy inventing new words to express his outrage, Doc Rivers stuck to plain old English when discussing his guy’s snub from the All-Star game. Ray Allen not being named an All-Star this season brought out his coach’s sharp tongue.

What’s awesome is that Rivers threw his fellow coaches under the bus before he knew that Ray-Ray had been snubbed. From the Boston Herald:

“It really would be (disappointing) because coaches all over the league talk about sacrificing,” Rivers said after yesterday’s practice but before the selections were announced.

“I might be venting for no reason, but I just get that sense they’re being hypocritical because somebody who doesn’t make it on our group (sacrifices). (But) that’s what they did. They voted for numbers instead of sacrifice, wins and efficiency.”

Also inferring that there was hypocrisy on the coaches’ part, was GM Danny Ainge.

The best reaction – and surely, one that will continue to endear this franchise to the rest of hoops universe – came from All-Star Paul Pierce: “In my opinion, I think we should have our starting five … I’ll take four or five of us.”

what’s more disappointing is that mo williams gets snubbed. the cavs had the best record in the entire league before last night and only one all-star.

  • ENDSwing Posted: Jan.30 at 10:05 am
its half a game, its not like they’re running away with the league

  • ENDSwing Posted: Jan.30 at 10:07 am
    The Starting 5?!?!?

  • Scott Posted: Jan.30 at 10:08 am
    Kendrick Perkins!!!

  • a_whiteman Posted: Jan.30 at 10:11 am
They still have the best record, when detroit won 64 that year they had 4, dallas’ 67 win year it was dirk and howard, last year the cs had the big3. If they have the best record, the top players on that team should be rewarded. Look at the difference mowill has made. Its basically the same team as last season, they add him and now they are tops in the l. Where’s the love!!!!!!!

  • ENDSwing Posted: Jan.30 at 10:14 am
I do agree Pp got in on Rep and there should have been a switch with Ray. But you cant leave off PP (so I’ve herd)

  • Hisham Posted: Jan.30 at 10:41 am
I don’t get how sacrifice should get a player in. Isn’t the selection based on whether or not you are having an outstanding season individually? I mean, winning is important, but sacrifice? No. Who’s ever made an allstar team for sacrificing? Stupid Doc

  • Blinguo Posted: Jan.30 at 10:46 am
…All Star Tricks are for kids.

  • BETCATS Posted: Jan.30 at 11:00 am
    Kendrick? Yeah right

  • Doc Funk Posted: Jan.30 at 11:16 am
Take the top 6 from the Celtics and Cavs and have them play the West, lose by 25, and get extra fatigued (or god forbid, hurt) for the second half of the season. All according to SVG’s master plan.

  • BostonBaller Posted: Jan.30 at 11:21 am
Pierce was being loyal not stupid, I’m sure he didn’t mean that all five should be there. @ Harsham: yes Ray has sacrificed but he is STILL having an ALL STAR year so your theory is disspelled. I’m not mad that we (Boston) didn’t get 3 guys in but it is not that big of a stretch to say that 4 out of 5 of the starters are having All star uality seasons so far. Especially the Rondo critics, he has more assists than all of the other gaurds everyone else wants in there (assists are a PG’s primary duty right?) plus he’s more entertaining than the others and the ASG is about entertainment! Let’s just sit back and enjoy the game ps. i think Stern was just nervous that Ray was going to steal the show like he did last year when they GAVE L James the ASG MVP. lol

  • BostonBaller Posted: Jan.30 at 11:23 am
At least Doc’s comments were BEFORE the decision, Ben is just being Ben…whatever that means

  • Sebastian B. O. Bunionstow, esq. Posted: Jan.30 at 11:24 am
They must be intoxicated with Hopium.

  • Todd Spehr Posted: Jan.30 at 11:30 am
Ray was probably angrily shooting jumpers in the gym at 8 this morning

  • mike Posted: Jan.30 at 11:45 am
I really don’t think Nelson was deserving over Ray

  • Blinguo Posted: Jan.30 at 12:07 pm
Remember all the media hooplah about Ray Allen’s slump, even when he broke out of it with big games before the playoffs last year? Yeah, that worked out great for him to get his rhythm back at the right time. You really don’t want Ray to peak right now anyway, unless they rather have the race to the best record (this year vs LA/ORL/CLE, very slight chance at all time) which wins nothing. He sacrificed more last year when he seemingly wasn’t getting his assignments on offense down until everything clicked and blew up going into each successive round.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Jan.30 at 12:07 pm
Man, the Cs sense of entitlement is sickening. Ray would be a boring addition to the ASG anyway. I think the coaches made the right picks.

  • BostonBaller Posted: Jan.30 at 12:19 pm
HELLOOOOO, how boring was Ray in last years ASG? His shooting display was something to watch as was James’ ramblimg down the lane.. Like I stated before, it’s ok that Ray didn’t make it, it’s just annoying to read that he AND Rondo shouldn’t even be mentioned as worthy of being there. I don’t think Doc, the C’s or I think we are above all other teams, every coach, player and fan will show biased loyalty at times. I don’t hear anyone complainig about LeBron or Ben Wallace thinking they are entitled even though they have voiced their displeasure of the selection. People need to stop with the pointless harping about “arrogance”, entitlement”, “trash talking” & “overratted” labels planted on the Celtics. People act as if they hit the lottery every time the Celts lose a game or two and the same people claim the above mentioned things when they win. Enjoy the games tonight folks, i will.

  • Sarah Posted: Jan.30 at 12:29 pm
That’s part of the sacrifice there, Doc. You might not make the all-star game… but you might when a championship.

  • Sarah Posted: Jan.30 at 12:30 pm
    Goodness! *WIN a championship

  • ciolkstar Posted: Jan.30 at 12:46 pm
BpstonBaller: I thought it was really boring. Thats why he didn’t win the MVP. He can be in the 3 point contest if he wants. How is expecting to have 3 or 4 (or even 5) players off of one team thats not even in 1st place represent the entire conference. I think thats the definition of entitlement. The ASG is there to rewrd individual players of rhaving great INDIVIDUAL seaons. The playoff are tyhere for the winners, and thats whats most iportanat anyway. Successful franchises in big media markets dominate the league, I’m happy that players like Granger, Devin Harris and Joe Johnson are getting some shine. I cant name one player on the East lineup who i think should be replaced by Ray. Add to all that the fact the HE IS a boring player.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Jan.30 at 12:47 pm
Typo city, but you get the point.

  • Ryan Posted: Jan.30 at 12:52 pm
It’s debatable if he should have made it, but I agree the all star MVP was handed to LBJ last year. Ray Allen shot thr lights out to help give the east the victory. He deserved major consideration for all star mvp last lear

  • mat smith Posted: Jan.30 at 12:54 pm
Kendrick Perkins! instead of Dwight! wait, thats dumb….

  • nbk Posted: Jan.30 at 1:03 pm
I think Sarah has a lot of it spot on…the all star game is for ALL STARS, not all ROLE PLAYERS. The sacrafice is going from a star to a role player. Although Ray Allen is a little more then a role player, but he did not get totally snubbed

  • riggs Posted: Jan.30 at 1:08 pm
lol @ ray allen being boring in last years ASG, stupid comment of the day should be awarded now.

  • nbk Posted: Jan.30 at 1:15 pm
he did not say he was boring in last years all star game…he said he is a boring PLAYER. Which for the most part is true, unless you need a buzzer beating three or your down by double digits with a short amount of time left.

  • BostonBaller Posted: Jan.30 at 1:40 pm
The Celts are NOT in 1st place but they have the most wins..Semantics my friend…I would put Ray in over Pierce if I had to and YES i would rather have guys in that are not always getting big market shine (Granger gets his share and so does mo Williams) IF you watch the games and listen to the TNT shows (and SLAM) you will hear about the true ballers like Granger, Harris Williams & Rondo. I’m looking forward to seeing all the 1st timers…No problem here

  • Ryan.T. Posted: Jan.30 at 1:47 pm
I don’t think Jameer Nelson is any more exciting than Ray Allen is. Nelson making the All-Star game reminds me of when BJ Armstrong did so in the 90′s. We know he isn’t the best at any guard position but has VERY GOOD players to distribute the ball to…. And yes, Ray Allen lit up the gym in last years All-Star game. But at least Rashard Lewis made it…. Hold up, 3 Orlando Magic players??

  • Rasheedionics Posted: Jan.30 at 2:16 pm
They put Jameer Nelson in so they have an excuse to show that video at the draft where all these times passed on him before Magic took him with 20 something pick. This is ultimate revenge.

  • Dwyane Posted: Jan.30 at 2:31 pm
Ray desreved it more then KG for sure this about numbers and Ray’s doing better then Jameer Nelson also Vince Carter should have got in and I just am pissed now that Ray has been getting the worse out of the Big 3 ever since they started to play together.

  • firephantom Posted: Jan.30 at 2:56 pm
The All-Star game is about individual accomplishments not about great teams playing efficient basketball together, and most importantly, it’s about giving back to the fans and putting on a show. They already have awards to honor players who play great team basketball, namely the MVP, Finals MVP and the Larry O’Brien trophy. Maybe the Massholes in Boston would love to see all 5 Celtics on the court for an All-Star game but clearly they are the minority.

  • jaymes Posted: Jan.30 at 3:02 pm
Ciolk is right, Ray is boring..But Jameer ain’t exactly an exitement machine..If your after entertainment value, Vince is the big snub..

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Jan.30 at 4:05 pm
the real question is how did Doc “sense” the snub? he must have insider info! FBI needs to investigate this.

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Jan.30 at 4:05 pm
for the integrity of the game of course.

  • dma Posted: Jan.30 at 4:59 pm
isn’t rashard lewis just basically a younger ray allen? all star game wise…

  • BostonBaller Posted: Jan.30 at 5:16 pm
#1 @nbk, The 1st boring comment about Ray was in the beginning of ciolkstar’s comment and he ended with HE IS boring…#2 @firephantom, true fans in Boston aren’t dumb enough to think all 5 guys should be in and you couldn’t come up with anything better than a license plate slogan of massholes? What an ANALCIRCLE you seem to be my friend. LOL (Recycle cans not slogans, I’m original)oh yeah, those awards you mentioned are given to individuals doing THEIR thing and not necessarily the TEAM thing. I assumed that all who read SLAM actually watched bball and knew a bit about the sport but I guess my masshole was blocked. lol @u #3 @dma, no R Lewis is not a younger version of Ray unless you are saying Lewis will be a candidate as a HOFer. Enjoy watching the games tonight folks, win or lose I have fun watching. T. Crook

  • Moose Posted: Jan.30 at 5:42 pm
    DAVID LEE!

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.30 at 5:46 pm
I wish they’d pick 25 All-Stars from each conference so all the coaches and players would shut up. Why not just hand out participation trophies and orange slices? And you’d think a coach who JUST won a championship would have a greater sense of what matters and what doesn’t—guess not.

  • BostonBaller Posted: Jan.30 at 9:27 pm
What was Perkins thinking? Boneheaded flagrant foul…cooler heads prevailed on by both teams though. It’s my birthday so it’s time for cake and a Celtics win.

  • Trevor Posted: Jan.30 at 9:52 pm
Ray was a fill-in last year and he won it for the East

  • ab_40 Posted: Jan.31 at 6:28 am
mo williams is the third best player on that cavs team in terms of value not by stats. big Z is the seccond best player there. ray allen and vince carter should be subbed for either jameer nelson, rashard lewis or devin harris and david west not getting 9 boards but 7 this season has nothing to do with sacrifice

  • BostonBaller Posted: Jan.31 at 8:53 am
@Mr. Russ B, that trophy and orange slices was pure classic, pure classic! lol. All Stern needs to do now is replace the Haterade with juice boxes. Where is the lunchables, cheez it’s and apple juice.? lol

  • dude Posted: Jan.31 at 5:37 pm
why isnt eric snow in the all star game????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • vtrobot Posted: Jan.31 at 8:46 pm
it is too bad that mo williams won’t be part of the event. it’s a d*mn (do I need to censor that word) shame that ray won’t be there. he’s been the C’s best player this year. he should be there before pierce should but you can’t have an all-star game without the Final MVP from the year before just like you can’t have an ASG without AI being there no matter what type of a season he’s having. fan voting is stupid because most fans are stupid. i don’t really get the nelson vote. are his numbers that much better than ray’s and mo’s? whatever, the whole thing is a joke. watching ray is boring? how is anything more boring than the dunk contest? the ASG is not too far behind. ray might not be as flashy and thugged out as some of the other gangstas who was love as fans but i’ll be happy when ray wins the finals MVP this year after he quietly helps to kill whoever the C’s face.

  • stu Posted: Jan.31 at 11:06 pm
russ – he may have won a ring as a coach, but don’t you think mike dunleavy smelling of bourbon could have coached that team to a championship? doc was an average-at-best coach the years before, with loads of fans calling for his head.. then danny ainge loads up the C’s and all of a sudden doc is the ball whisperer? really? that team was player-coached, and doc was/is along for the ride. ubuntu!

  • Mike Posted: Feb.1 at 12:55 am
I really do not think that coaches really put that much thought into it considering that they are too busy trying to prepare for the next game because God forbid, if they lose 3 games in a row, they might get fired on the spot. Either they take like 30 seconds to write the first 8 names that come to mind or they have one of their intern stat keepers do it.

  • KoBynum716 Posted: Feb.1 at 6:26 am
there is no way ray allen was ‘snubbed’, let alone the whole celtics starting five. pierce n kg deserve it, and they got it. big mo was snubbed for jameer nelson, although nelson is ballin. but williams has had a bigger impact. and number one IR should be david lee over ray allen, any day. david lee is just so underrated

  • BostonBaller Posted: Feb.1 at 8:23 am
@Stu : As far as Doc not really coaching and just being along for the ride…learn the game. Does that mean Red, Riley, Phil J, Dean Smith or Mike K were/are along for the ride and weren’t/aren’t that good at coaching?(Since its SuperBowl Sunday what aboutChuck Knoll,Tom Landry or Bill B?)It is sometimes harder to coach a star studded team than it is to coach a really good team. Have you ever coached, ref’d or even played serious ball? (The Y doesn’t count)Didn’t doc have his former team playing excellent ball before he got to the Celtics? No coach wins a chip w/out superstars but it takes a lot more than that. Try coaching young kids who have talent then imagine doing that with grown men with grown egos. LOL

  • bbaby Posted: Feb.1 at 5:17 pm
If we are gonna bring NFL Coaches in the mix you can’t leave out the great Jimmy Johnson. The Cowboys were amazing w/ him and horrible w/ Switzer…Back to basketball.

  • stu Posted: Feb.2 at 12:40 am
sup boston baller.. i wasn’t calling out russ, i was just asking a straight up question.. also – yup, yup and yup – i currently coach, i used to referee (years ago), and am an ex-representative baller down here in sydney, oz.. soooo, i know a bit about the game.. kinda.. the ball is round still, yeah?
you clearly know more though.. props to you.
i’m sure a team full of superstars is hard to contain and coach, no doubt, but i still believe without a shadow of a doubt that ANY coach would have won the title with boston last year. they could have left the seat empty and said Red was there in spirit – those guys simply were not going to lose, and that came from the huddle, not from the coach. again, my opinion. and no, i don’t think doc had great success as a coach prior. and i don’t think he’s a good coach now. i do think he’s one of the luckiest guys in the L however, with a great roster. danny ainge is the mormon maestro.

  • donlaker Posted: Feb.2 at 1:33 pm
ray allen or perkins , i think not, doc worry about clevland /lakers/orlando and let ray allen and perkins prove they can go back to back .. even if you get starbury ,bron and cavs owe you a world class beat down in playoffs…go mo williams and is damon jones still in the nba?

  • brian scalabrine Posted: Feb.2 at 5:01 pm
why didnt i get voted in, and donlaker b4 you speak actually learn what a basketball is

  • and1ballermj2350 Posted: Feb.2 at 5:06 pm
    F*** Kendrick Perkins!

  • randy thompson Posted: Feb.3 at 8:11 am
Doc has a point Ray Allen has done nothing but be a face for the league when it had no face……a perrenial all star on a league leading team……coaches owe him respect
