Lawrence Frank Gets a Coach of the Year Vote … from Doc Rivers

    by Marcel Mutoni

Of course, being a coach himself, Rivers doesn’t have any kind of say in the Coach of the Year voting, but if he did, the Nets’ bench boss would be one of his top choices.

The Nets, who at 19-20 are holding down the seventh seed - the Eastern Conference, ladies and germs! - are faring a lot better this season than most had anticipated, and according to the C’s coach, that has a lot to do with Lawrence Frank.

    Quoth the Star-Ledger:

“The Nets are one of the good stories in our league this year,” Rivers said. “Lawrence — if you had a vote for Coach of the Year, he’s got to be in the conversation.

What they’ve done is … he’s changed the system. They’ve gone to a lot of dribble-weave stuff, which they hadn’t done. It’s what Lawrence saw in their team — having Vince (Carter) and Devin, having a big in (Brook) Lopez — it fits their personnel. And it’s a complete change from what they’ve done in the past with the Princeton stuff.

“So to me, it’s a lot of Devin — but it’s a lot of Lawrence as well. He has to be in the argument.”

Shortly thereafter, Rivers’s team went out and destroyed the Frank-led Nets by 32 points.

So, what do you guys think, should Lawrence Frank be “in the conversation” for COY?

Marcel called it a ‘zany high school offense’ or something when I linked the new Nets offense story to him. Looks like it turned out ok for the most part this year.
Frank is in the conversation, but Mike Brown (am I really saying this) is my COY. Spoelestra and Nate deserve to there as well imo.

Unless this is a rather wide-ranging conversation, HELL no.

I used to ball with LFrank in preschool. He was a beast w two-handed windmill tomahawk 360 jams. A helluva coach now and a child prodigy as a youngn.

COY i think hands down has to go to Pop or Sloan this year. Pop for keeping the Spurs near the top of the West when both Manu and Parker went down, and then when they comeback, its like the team never lost a step, they just re-integrated them flawlessly. Its really unbelievable. Sloan for pretty much the same reason, Boozer has been out pretty much all year and these guys are still in the top 5 or 6 in the West.

Played Streetball with him in Elementery - Terence Stansbury’s 360 Statue of Liberty dunk was all Frankie baby! SVG - Ya’ll thaught the Double O in the Sencond round, series win against the Raptors, and 52 win season was a fluke. We still here and we buildin’ 4 more new towers

He’s a good coach, and he’s done well to lift a team with 10 new players since last season to the playoffs, i don’t know there is no clear cut favourite for COY at the momment, why not?

every single article i read on slam…the big gray toolbar that says “add a comment, invite a friend, than those little icons, and the sayings “this story is filed under” and “read more tags like this” covers up the middle of the article. i can never read a full article, does anyone else have this problem?

I don’t know about the coaching, but the mastermind who trade Kidd for Harris deserves some credit.

in response to jackyl, yeah, i got the same problem. sometimes it comes up, sometimes it doesnt, but it never happened with the old layout

They have three good players and they are gonna make the playoffs, so he does deserve SOME credit.

    • Moose Posted: Jan.15 at 3:46 pm
In other words, the Boston Globe featured something that said that Frank liked Garnett’s intensity. Someone LIKES it!

    • Gerard Himself Posted: Jan.15 at 6:43 pm
IF Frank gets them in the playoffs, yes, he should definitely be considered to be COY. But Pop, Nate, Doc, Brown (ha! Doc Brown), and Jackson are up there too.

    • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jan.15 at 8:38 pm
Seriously, just give Greg Pop the damn award already.

    • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jan.15 at 8:40 pm
@ what: Well, actually four good players, the way Yi Jian Lian was playing before he got injured. Hopefully he can get back to that state.
Him and Brook are two talented, young players.

    • Will Lee Posted: Jan.15 at 8:59 pm
Mike, you serious? He could fly? tell us more!

    • melvin ely Posted: Jan.15 at 11:26 pm

    • Yardbird Posted: Jan.15 at 11:30 pm
Nah, LFrank gets some props for having the Nets play so well this year, but not COY-type props. Mike Brown, anyone?

    • nasirjones Posted: Jan.16 at 9:32 am
crazy stan van gundy never gets mentioned in this coy conversation, dude’s done an excellent job of using the teams strenghts, not many peoples saw the magic in the mids of the race for the top spot in the east before this season, hell i even consider them a contender. He got good personnel but hes done freakin good job at guidin’ them
