Marbury and KG: Together Again?

by Marcel Mutoni

On their way to their first title in 22 seasons last year, the Boston Celtics made some pretty shocking personnel moves. Well, if the rumors are to be believed, it appears as though they’re about to do it again.

According to ESPN‘s Marc Stein and his sources, the defending champs are serious about signing Stephon Marbury. All that’s stopping this unholy union from happening right now is Marbury negotiating a buyout with the Knicks – something that has proven to be rather difficult, as you know all too well.

Although it has been widely assumed that Celtics forward Kevin Garnett would resist a reunion with the controversial point guard — after Marbury broke up their Minnesota parternship in less than three seasons together by forcing a trade to New Jersey — one Celtics source insists that Garnett has voiced no opposition to the idea of signing Marbury for the rest of the season to strengthen Boston’s backcourt depth behind starters Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen.

When asked specifically about the likelihood of Marbury joining the Celtics this season, the source predicted that “it will happen.”

Ubuntu!

The idea of Celtics fans gritting their teeth after being forced to accept Stephon Marbury as one of their own makes me very happy for some odd reason. But not quite as much as the possibility that Steph could somehow be involved in the title chase this season. Simply amazing.

Lol @ people saying the Celtics aren’t good enough to repeat. What planet are you on? There are only 3 teams with a shot to win and the Celtics are undeniably one of them.

If Steph got bought out he’d get 20-25 minutes on Boston’s bench and take minutes away from Tony Allen and Eddie House. The last game Boston played, the bench combined for 9 points. Obviously some extra scoring on that putrid bench would be helpful.

This goes one of two ways. #1 – Celtics sign Marbury as a backup. #2 – The knicks refuse to buy him out. Either way I’m happy, because it prevents the Lakers from signing Marbury (a prospect I’m rather frightened of as a Celtic fan)

    they’ll be better with him.

But the Celtics lost a couple of games recently… that automatically means that they are no longer good enough. Forget the fact that the same people who say this believed that two weeks ago no one in the league could even hope to compete with the Celtics.

    the rebirth of starbury.

The C’s are a top team because they play ferocious team defense and have great chemistry. How does Marbury fit in with that? For anyone who thinks he’ll beef up the second unit, keep in mind that everyone will hate playing with him, including the first unit. KG has his hands full with Pierce, don’t do this to him.

I would have to agree with everything Eboy said. Though I’m not sure how Moose is gonna take this report on Marbury signing with the Celtics…

this move might actually make me root for celts. ugh.

also between Sam and steph theyll have a backcourt tandem with the biggest heads in the league. be afraid!

  • hembergler

As a Celtics fan, I’m pretty excited at this prospect. Between the Three Party and Doc, I think he can be kept in line. And the bench desperately needs some scoring.

If the C’s pick up Marbury in, say, February, odds are that KG strangles him to death by March and Scalabreezy gets tabbed to dump his body in the maaash (word to Frank Costello).

I just hope he doesn’t disrupt the team’s ideology.

And Dacre, u can take me to a playoff game… I live in Boston. Those tickets are expensive tho, lol

Mabye if the Celtics sing Steph he could continue his streak of ruining great teams, all of a sudden the Celtics will lose the rest of the season after the sing Starbury…

  • krod

    KG : Nothing is iiimmmppoooosssiiiblllleeeeeeee!!!!!!

  • ClydeSays

This might work for the C’s, but I don’t see the Knicks & Steph resolving their dispute anytime soon. Steph seems to want every penny of his contract and the Knicks don’t want to give it up.

  • jer

noway do they need marbury they already have…..RONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNDDDOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

  • speedy

    I think boston is a team .
…not really the best place for Marbury.

  • Stargazey

Personally, I’d pay good money to see KG make Starbury cry on the bench.

I am a resentful Knicks fan, though.

  • BOSTONBALLER

I’m torn between the 2 scenarios. One one hand I am afraid of the huge baggage & locker room factor Marbury would bring with him even with a bunch of vets to balance him out (if that is at all possible) On the other hand Marbury probably still has a lot of really good ball left in him and would indeed have a chip on that tatooed shoulder.

A few weeks ago I’d have said KG & company could handle him but with KG’s elevated unpredictability, Pierces’ increased self assesment of his own “greatness” and the rest of the guys yapp’n I don’t know…

Marbury should take less money just to get out of Gotham unless he is lying about just wanting to play ball…If he comes to Boston I’ll root for him.

Yo, John D: Larry Bird died when? Your either dumb, or disrespectful.

  • Chris21

Yeah that would be a pretty good signing, imagine how sick that would be, eddie house, rajon rondo and marbury, it dont get much better at the celtics pg.

can someone answer this question – if marbury isn’t willing to give up any money why should the knicks buy him out? if marbury was prepared to leave the remaining money on the table to leave i can understand why the knicks would let him go but he has a hell of a cheek to tell them about where he’s going to go and trying to paint himself out as the good guy in this by offering initially to leave $3m on the table if they release him, thus paying him $18m not to come to work!! and its not as if there’s any mutual respect between him and the knicks is there – tbh if i’m the knicks i’d let him rot and either buy him out after march 1 or just keep him there until the season ends and cut ties with him and await him to ruin his next team

  • BK

yo i hope marbury goes to boston and wins a championship cause thats messed up how d’antoni treated him, not playing him in the beginning and ignoring him. and i’m from ny but wouldn’t mind seeing boston win it all, but only with marbury

  • Fred34

Who did starbury blow in a past lifetime (or this one) to turn his karma around? He doesn’t deserve this trade – MN is rolling over in its grave right now – but it certainly would make BNtown a beast. Yikes – get ready Jordan farmer, can you handle steph?

Wouldn’t be that huge, h might get a few minuts, but Rondo is running the green machine and even if Starbury goes there, it is still Rondo.
