Marbury and KG: Together Again?

by Marcel Mutoni

On their way to their first title in 22 seasons last year, the Boston Celtics made some pretty shocking personnel moves. Well, if the rumors are to be believed, it appears as though they’re about to do it again.

According to ESPN‘s Marc Stein and his sources, the defending champs are serious about signing Stephon Marbury. All that’s stopping this unholy union from happening right now is Marbury negotiating a buyout with the Knicks – something that has proven to be rather difficult, as you know all too well.

Although it has been widely assumed that Celtics forward Kevin Garnett would resist a reunion with the controversial point guard — after Marbury broke up their Minnesota parternship in less than three seasons together by forcing a trade to New Jersey — one Celtics source insists that Garnett has voiced no opposition to the idea of signing Marbury for the rest of the season to strengthen Boston’s backcourt depth behind starters Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen.

When asked specifically about the likelihood of Marbury joining the Celtics this season, the source predicted that “it will happen.”

Ubuntu!

The idea of Celtics fans gritting their teeth after being forced to accept Stephon Marbury as one of their own makes me very happy for some odd reason. But not quite as much as the possibility that Steph could somehow be involved in the title chase this season. Simply amazing.

Please! That would be so sick haha.

  • rob stewart

    Where AMAZING happens!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I wouldn’t sell the move short. Steph would be highly motivated, Doc would keep him on a short leash if he acts out and KG, Paul and Ray would have his respect and between him and Rondo, if they saw time together, they’d be the fastest backcourt in the league.

Stephon has a history of making teams better…after he leaves. That doesn’t bode well for a repeat trip to the chip for the C’s. I hope this goes through for the C-hater in me.

  • rikson

NOOOOOO!!! What kind of world would reward that behavour with a title run -> geeez

  • Captain America

Will Marbury turn in his Starbury skull tat for a Shamrock?

  • Captain America

Right, Eboy, like Ricky Buckets and Mel Blount were going to save the Heat last year? he-he

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Even in a new year, the Capt. is a non-knowing idiot. To explain, no, you moron, the Heat weren’t going to do sh*t last year or were they expected to. The Celts ARE the champs, regardless of what the SLAM site says. With a motivated presence (like PJ Brown last year) their minor shortcomings can be alleviated and Steph would be the proper FU provider to the rest of the league who’s laughed at and doubted him.

  • stormfya

Wow! Shambury. But, seriously, Marbury’s addition will slow the Celtics down right now. I’m all for Cleveland, but Boston will lose a lot of ground in Jan and Feb, especially when it comes to Western road games. The adjustment would be difficult given the personalities of Marbury and Pierce (forget about KG).

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

    I really hope this happens.

  • http://reflex.com Reflex

I really really hope this happens.

If you’re Steph, and you know the C’s are interested, don’t you say “enjoy the $3 mil,” grab your lightly diminished check, and hop the first thing smoking to Beantown? Oops, there I go using logic again.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

Anyway, I hope he continues to hold out for the full amount, the Celtics bring someone else in (like Allan Houston or Steve Francis), and Steph has to go play for Head Automatica or one of those other Euroleague bottom feeders. At least the fans at MSG don’t throw batteries.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

Russ hasn’t been to MSG lately.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

some green starburys would be dope.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

i like Russ’s idea of Allan Houston/Steve Francis more. But i am sure everybody with a heart wants Antonie Walker, or maybe even Joe Smith?

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

^They should definitely pick up Shimmy.

  • http://chodrawings.blogspot.com/2008/01/pen-and-ink-portraits-nba-basketball.html M Cho

    Anything is possible!!

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

Joe Smith ain’t getting bought out. And the C’s need a guard, not a shimmier. Does this mean Sammy the Balls is finished, by the way?

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

hopefully, he didnt play that great last year. Retire while your on top, ET.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

just the thought of Paul Pierce and Antonie winning a ring together though. Who cares what they need, they could win it right now with this rotation they got going on. Why not add Antonie to it?

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

EGGHCKKK!!! Like Pusha T from the Clipse.

  • vtrobot

C’s should bring back Rick Fox and Pervis too.

  • Orlando Green

Could only hope that Marbury screws up their team chemistry and the Lakers run away with the title…or the Rockets…

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Ok, umm where do i start. How about… NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Please Lord, DON’T make THIS happen.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

so much for “ubuntu”. Good luck with that specific headcase Doc, you’ll probably retire by season’s end.

  • MalevolentKing7242

Im not a Celtics fan but still for the good of the Cs and the leauge dont sign step. Doc will have a hedace and Boston chemestry… no more Ubuntu no more.

  • Joe

    Sorry, Gabe Pruitt

  • a_whiteman

This needs to happen!!!!and if he starts to screw around, just send him home like walsh did lol. Get him and shimmy too!!!!!

  • Onions Baby Onions

@ MalevolentKing: 1) Learn how to spell.
    2)You’re wrong.
3)If this does happen, Slam NEEDS to do another Starbury/KG cover.

  • Captain America

Huh, Eboy, a good memory is a b+itch and I got one. Where is your boy Buckets now, chump?

  • vegas

i think if they do sign him it will fall through like it did with miles. You know they could pick up boozer this season too.

  • Orlando Green

id love to see shimmy in bean town…

  • http://www.bbl.org.uk Josh D

The Celtics are no longer good enough to repeat, Why would they sign him? He doesn’t fit in with their style, he’ll have to change his style completely, i never thought i’d say this, but whats wrong with Eddie House and Sam I am?

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

    Epic.
Then Starbury would want to be a starter and all hell breaks loose.

  • http://www.slamonline.com mat smith

gawd no, bad move, unless they want him for his great locker room presence, oh wait, I was watching NBA street series ankle breakers DVD today and even when he played for PHX he was a fruit and nut back then, slurring and using made up words.

  • http://www.myspace.com/hemantsbeats what

As a role player off the bench I think the C’s will be fine with Marbury. If they end up having to start him and play him big minutes for any reason, this will probably backfire.

  • http://slam Swish

Celtic’s have to many sell out crowds. I don’t think they can find a seat for Starbury to sit in while he’s serving his many suspensions, unlike the the Madison Square Garden (aka Ghostown) lol

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I can’t believe the stupidity, basketball wise, most of you are exhibiting. Starting? Celts are no longer the favorites? Big minutes? Ya’ll really think that sh*t or just type it to get reactions? Steph would probably play 15 minutes a game, if that. He’d control tempo and knock down spot up J’s, something Rondo can’t do, and create shots off the dribble, something House is incable of since he love’s the three so much. Steph may be an all around idiot, but dude is still hugely talented and needs a spot where his skills can mesh with a squad, a veteran team with a players coach, like Boston.

  • http://www.slamonline.com John D

Larry Bird is rollin over in his grave.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Big Man

I like a rotation of Rondo, Steph and House. In that threesome you have a distributor, a scorer and a shooter. Depending on what the team needs on a given night or during a given situation it would work out fine.
Russ is right though, I finally think Steph should give back more of his money. Maybe offer them $2 million and see what happens. Then he can take out all of his anger on the league by winning a ring with the Celtics.
Those of y’all who think Steph is a bum really aren’t paying attention.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I miss Allenp. Big Man has no controversy around it.

  • j-smoov 5

Go Starbury. Rooting for you all the way.

  • Brad

I think if he does join Boston and that’s a big if!… but I think KG could keep him in-line.

  • Krishan

He’s going to a finals-bound Boston team, and people are talking about how he’ll affect team chemistry. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m pretty sure I can still remember how steph used to ball. And he’s still only 31. With a gigantic chip on his shoulder. There’s nothing but upside for the C’s in this deal.

  • MeloMan13

it would be even better if the knicks got the 8th seed and the played the Celts in the playoffs. that wud b almost as gud as VC in t-dot

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

this is just like the darius miles experiment, which the celts can afford to do.
still, seeing marbury in green may just be too much, even though i’m all for this to happen.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I know this is twisted and all but wouldn’t it be PURE COMEDY if Mike D just said ‘screw you, steph, you ain’t winning anything this year because i’m not buying you out. you’re on the DL for the rest of the year.’ That, my friends, would be fantastic.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I think this would be fine. Infact if it goes through I’m taking Eboy and Russ to a playoff game in Bean town.
