Old Man Vince Carter

by Marcel Mutoni

In this sports-mad world that we live in, as our athletes age, they have a strange way of making us feel old. That’s the way I feel when I contemplate the fact that Vince Carter turned 32 yesterday.

As you may recall, there was a time when VC was the League’s most athletic star, easily (and literally) rising above the fray on a nightly basis. Those days are long gone, and he’s now content to play the role of elder statesman on a young team that’s fighting and clawing for a Playoff spot.

From the Star-Ledger:

There has to be something a little scary about 32, though – if only because in basketball terms, it just sounds much older than, say, 31. When this guy broke into the league, Oak was 35 and Kevin Willis was 36, and that was ancient to him. And 35 isn’t exactly very far away – he’ll be that age when his current contract runs out.

“I remember those guys, it was like I thought I wouldn’t even be around at that age,”VC said. “You don’t think like that. So it’s funny to hear these guys talk about it, they’re like, ‘You played against those guys?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah.’”

VC’s teammate, Keyon Dooling, went on to say that Vince is now a better all-around player. And while that may well be true, one can’t help but reminisce about what once was.

Kevin Willis and Oak arent exactly Hakeen and Kareem

  • WhaHuh

He still plays young. T-Mac on the other hand…..

  • Jas

He’s still one of the best shooting guards in the NBA. He might not be as athletic but he’s still very effective.

if by “better all-around player” he means “afraid of contact” then i agree.

2000 dunk contest. It’s OVAAAA! Ahhh, great times

  • Ryan D.

VC can still throw it on cats. Wasn’t the hardest worker though and admitted it on Toronto.

  • Prentice Mcgruder

Slam when are you going to fix/acknowledge the bug that makes the comments and ‘Tag’ box run up over the post? This one is completely unreadable, and I know its not just my browser.

  • riggs

what browser are you using? cause if youre using IE, then yes it is your browser.

  • phildo

I have the same problem with IE. With Firefox it´s ok but I am not able to switch to any other browser in the office – so SLAM, please step your (technical) game up and optimize for IE too!

He doesn’t have the same aerial acrobatics, but he’s been having a great season.

He’s still 25 years younger than Dikembe Mutombo.

  • donlaker

what if he and t-back(tracy mcgrady) were still together would they have won something russ.

I do believe that T-Mac and Vince could’ve went on some type of Jordan/Pippen run of some variation. Maybe McGrady uses all of that athletic ability into more defensive prowess. I liked Vince, and its a shame that his biggest moment was when he went and graduated from UNC on the same day as Game 7 against AI and the Sixers. Thus, he missed the game winner and has never been heard from again.

another quote from Dooling: “he started out as a Raptor, now he’s a dinosaur”

Todd MacCulloch turned 33 today. He’ll celebrate by murking VC in pinball.

  • Tyquan

Keep up the good work SLAM just waitin for ish 126.

  • neibo

    …down here in H-town we don’t call him T-Mac anymore….
its back to just Tracy McGrady…

  • neibo

…God forbid he actually plays 4 games in a row…we might just develope some chemistry….

I doubt his team mates were that shocked over who vince has played with, sh!t even devin harris as playin against Kevin Willis.

  • Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo

    i will get you rusty

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Vince Carter was in top form, up until Game 7 of the series with Philly. That was a classic duel.

  • The Promise

Its kinda sad that hes went downhill the last couple years… We will be saying the same thing about Kobe in 3 years. Wait and see.

  • mike

LOL at neibo, I don’t think t-mac likes to play basketball. c’mon tmac, it takes five, right? don’t worry, when the playoffs start, “it’s on me.”

  • Coconut

I don’t think it’s gonna be like this with Kobe… The difference between Kobe and Vince is hard work. Kobe won’t let it come this far. He’s too proud.

  • WhaHuh

Vince is playing well. Public perception has changed. Im sure Kobe will take 20ppg 5rpg and 5apg at 32

  • dfrance83

Wassup with the whole afraid of contact talk with Vince. i think he’s just so damn athletic, he’d rather try and make the shot doing a 360 instead of taking the body and missing. Ask Alonzo is VC is afraid of contact…

  • jay

man hes 32? And that dunk on Zo was crazy.

  • http://nba.com tealish

WhaHuh: Word. Vince is definitely playing well, alright. He has off games for sure, (and perhaps more often than most stars) but this guy is constantly being talked about like he’s a thing of the past when he is still very much relevant and capable of going toe to toe against ANY superstar in the L.
Funny, back when VC first came into the L, I hated him for no good reason. Now, I find myself perpetually defending the guy.

  • Uzi

VC !! Most Definatley. This guy just rolled with wrong crews. Kinna like Clyde only he doesn’t have any rings!

  • GGG

He still gives me the sh*ts coz he could of/should off been even better.

That dunk over that 7footer Wiess? was plain crazy (my fave VC dunk, facial on Zo is a close 2nd)

  • Gaz

    He’s still better than BETCATS.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Grow up Gaz. How old are you? 10? 11 maybe? Give it a rest.

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

I wonder what we’re going to say when Greg Oden turns 32.

  • Gaz

    @Hursty, And the war begins!!!!

  • Samer
