The Post Up: BRoy Love Affair

And a whole bunch of games.

by Holly MacKenzie

Another week, another Wednesday. Twelve games on the schedule tonight and most of my attention was given to the Golden State/Dallas game. With Monta back, I’m anxious to see how the guys look.

Obviously, I wrote that sentence earlier tonight as I started my recaps. The Warriors looked awful and Monta wasn’t much better shooting 2-11 from the floor. I know, it’s early and he’s got to find his rhythm. He’s got an excuse. The rest of the Warriors (excluding Jax and Maggette), do not. Ugly, ugly game.

I lost the audio on half of my games tonight, but of course got it back for the Chicago/Clippers game where the Clippers announcers drive me crazy. Clippers are dying in the third which seems to be routine by now. They’ve got Baron and Marcus Camby back again though. My fantasy team would like to kindly request that Zach Randolph get back sooner rather than later.

I felt bad for Charlotte seeing them huff and puff in their game against the Blazers. Tired legs from that win over my team.

I also need to comment on Gerald Wallace. I thought Andrew’s foul was excessive, and I knew Gerald Wallace was injured, but my goodness. Collapsed lung and fractured ribs? My heart goes out to him, he’s had such a rough go trying to stay healthy and on the floor these past few years. I’m hoping and praying all of the best for Mr. Wallace.

Besides the Clippers sucking, Syracuse lost last night as well. My guy Jonny Flynn had a career-high 35 and we didn’t take advantage. Gah. Hope you all caught the highlight of the Wake Forest/Duke game. Wild finish. I love upsets. Except when they are against my team.

You know who is quickly moving up in my books? Brandon Roy. I know this is no real surprise, but just watching him, he’s so special. Phenomenal. Watching him drain jumpers with Raja Bell in his face, I can’t wipe the smile off of my face. Sorry, Raja, but those shots are beautiful. I love his demeanor, the effortless grace with which he plays. The humbleness when he’s off court. 10 steals. How when he speaks of wanting to win and making his team better, of choosing W’s rather than individual accolades, I fully believe him. How rare of a player he is in the game today. How I actually yearn for him to be more selfish sometimes, take more shots when he’s hot. How he clutched the game-ball when he dropped the 52. That was still the best performance of the season in my opinion. So exciting. He’s exciting. Anyone else experiencing this Brandon Roy love-affair or is it just me, because his game is making me swoon.

It’s Thursday…. You all know what that means. NBA on TNT! Whoooo. I’m liveblogging Spurs@Suns over at The Score and while I’m excited for that, I’m especially jacked to see Cleveland @ Orlando. After the Mo-show on Tuesday night I can’t wait to see what he follows up with.

As for the rest of the games, lets run down what we know and you guys (as always), can help me fill in the blanks on your teams.

Indiana managed to hold off Milwaukee 107-99, despite being without Danny Granger who rested a sore knee. TJ Ford continued his strong play of late, finishing with 34 points for the Pacers to outduel Charlie Villanueva of the Bucks who scored 28 points. While the Bucks were without Andrew Bogut and Michael Redd going into the game, they lost Luke Ridnour in the fourth when he took a shot to the face and suffered a concussion. While the Bucks cut the deficit to three in the final stretch of the game they were unable to get any closer. Troy Murphy had 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Pacers

The Celtics continued to dominate their opponent last night, winning their ninth straight as they kicked the Kings while they were down, thanks to Eddie House knocking down a career-high eight three-pointers (8-9 from beyond the arc), on his way to a 28 point night. While the Kings came out blazing and led 30-28 at the end of one, they quickly stalled on offense and were outscored 40-19 in the second quarter where the Celtics ran away with it from there. Rajon Rondo put in a 24-point, 9 assist night while Glen Davis and Kevin Garnett each added 14. The Kings were led by Jason Thompson’s 21 points and 11 rebounds while Kevin Martin had 18 and John Salmons added 22.

The Heat blew out those damn Wizards, 93-71. Washington managed to top 20 points in only the first quarter and that’s pretty much the story of the game right there. Dwyane Wade finished with 14 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists as Michael Beasley and James Jones each had 16 off of the bench. Antawn Jamison had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Wizards as Caron Butler added 18.

The Raptors continue to tease their fans, now owning their first three-game winning streak since the start of the season with a 107-106 victory against the Nets. They don’t make anything easy. This one came down to the final possession with Devin Harris missing what would have been a game-winner for the Nets. Toronto outscored Jersey 34-23 in the third quarter. Calderon KD and RDfinished with 17 points and 11 assists while Anthony Parker had 21 points and Chris Bosh added 18. Vince Carter had 27 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists for the Nets while Harris had 25 points and 10 assists and Keyon Dooling scored 17 off of the bench.

The Oklahoma City Thunder got the game to overtime against the Grizzlies. Once in the extra session they dominated, outscoring Memphis 14-2 in the final five minutes of their game, taking the 114-102 victory behind a 35-point 10-rebound, 6 assists and 4 blocked shots from Kevin Durant. Jeff Green had 23 points Russell Westbrook added 16. Rudy Gay had 25 for the Grizz while Mike Conley and Marc Gasol each added 15 and OJ Mayo scored 17.

Philly managed to outlast the Rockets last night as they took down Houston 95-93. While the Rockets led by as many as 14 points late, the 76ers battled back and it was Andre Igoudala who hit a baseline J to give the Sixers the victory. After he missed a jumper on Philly’s final possession, the ball went back to Houston with 5.8 seconds left but Tracy McGrady missed what would have been a game-winning three pointer. Igoudala finished with 20 points for the Sixers while Andre Miller had 16 and Elton Brand added 14. McGrady scored 24 for the Rockets as Luis Scola scored 18 and Yao Ming was held to 13 points to go with 9 rebounds.

Dallas murdered Golden State 117-93. While the Warriors jumped out to a quick start, Dirk Nowitzki quickly gave the Mavs the lead and Dallas rolled from there, shooting 57% for the game as they led 69-47 at the half. Dirk finished with 20 points, Brandon Bass had 16 points and 11 rebounds, Josh Howard scored 19 points and Jason Terry had 22 points off of the bench. Stephen Jackson led the Warriors with 25 points while Corey Maggette had 21 off of the bench and Kelenna Azubuike added 12. Monta Ellis was only 2-11 from the floor as he tried to find his rhythm since his return.

While the Bobcats had high hopes for their matchup against the Blazers after their double-overtime victory in Los Angeles the night before, they were unable to maintain their energy and Portland jumped on them early, leading 32-18 at the end of the first quarter. With the tired legs of the Bobcats causing them to clank shots, Portland was able to maintain their lead from their hot start and hold off the Bobcats, 88-74 with ease. Brandon Roy finished with 17 points for the Blazers as LaMarcus Aldridge added 25 points and 9 rebounds. Emeka Okafor had 18 for Charlotte while Raja Bell added 16.

The best thing about last night was Duke taking the loss.

Holly I’ve been in love with Brandon Roy. It’s well documented.

  • Andy

Kevin Durant is my new favourite player. Sure, he still takes a few too many shots for his points, but he’s definitely got something about him.

  • scott

I bet Portland wishes they could redo the 07 NBA draft.

  • riggs

cot damn @ eddie house comeuppance in 3 points, anyone else think that ray is teaching him how to shoot faster and more efficiently?

  • D-R

Isn’t it spelled “Affair”, or is that intentional?

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

Eboy, that Duke game was sooo good. Teague did not play that well, suprisingly. What killed Duke was Wake Forest’s big men. and Brandon Roy is a beasst.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I’ve been in love with Brandon Roy’s game since last year. You are getting on the bandwagon late, Holly. Kevin Durant is quietly filling out his game and his frame. No more one-trick-scoring-pony. Last, but not least, i’m super happy Wake was able to hold off Duke and draw up such a perfect play at the end. Wake’s bench play was the difference.

  • scott

Brandon Roy has to be on the All-Star team this year. Durant probably not because of the Tuffcats record but he is one of the top ten players out West. Dare I say the ACC is stronger then the Big East this year.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I think once Holly realizes she forget an ‘f’, she will be dropping an ‘f’ bomb.

  • The Last Kings Fan

Rugby practice on the West coast=not a good mix for Eastern Conference games

25, 7 and 3 on 47-42-86 %. Cats are sleeping on Durant! It ain’t his fault the team sucks! He’s giving the business. For real, he should be in the ASG. He’s playing better than Melo.

  • mark

I don’t think 35 off 23 shots is too bad….he’s shooting 47% for the year and a pretty healthy 42% from 3. It sucks to be a Sonics fan having watched him struggle last season…

  • scott

Portland could have had Roy and Durant. That could be as bad as drafting Bowie over Jordan.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Hey Scott, Minny could have had both Roy and Mayo. Let that one sink in some.

  • scott

Tad that just illustrates the greatness of Kevin McHale.

  • BigWalt206

Holly, this would be around my seventh year (whenever you want to call his senior season at Garfield) of the BRoy love affair (TADOne, does that mean you got on late as well?) . Just glad that other people are starting to see how special this guy is. He is definitely the best player to come out of the 206…well unless you count Elgin Baylor @ Seattle U, who BRoy will eclipse in time, or Detlef while he was ballin in Issaquah and then @ UDub.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

BigWalt: Hi. Yes, I have a bit of an East Coast bias, so I really didn’t follow Brandon Roy until about his junior year at UDub. You got me by a longshot.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

You know what though, Scott. McHale has proven to be a semi-capable coach. Has to count for something, no?

  • scott

@Tad no. Nice little run Minny is on best record in the League in 09 but too little too late. I’m not sold on OJ Mayo being a star in this League yet. Rumors that he wants to run the point in Memphis I just can’t see that. Derrick Rose has a much higher ceiling then Mayo. Do you think Mayo is going to get much better then he already is?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

ESPN is reporting that Eddy Curry was also the father of the 9-month old that was slain in front of the mother of his 3 year old, who wasn’t harmed. Man, I feel awful for Eddy right now. Prayers go out to him and his family.

  • http://slamonline.com Holly MacKenzie

mother-eff an “f”, Tad. You know me too well. I’m not sure what happened there, I had affair, and I also had B-Roy with a dash that was gone when I just checked this. Bahhhhhhh Ihatetyposssss.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Right on cue. And yes Scott, I think Mayo can get much better than he is right now. Remember, the game starts to slow down for you after a few years in the league and Mayo is already pretty poised.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

i knew we would loose. Thanks for the nice words about Gerald.

  • http://slamonline.com Holly MacKenzie

From the Bynum/G-Wall incident: Bynum was called for a flagrant foul and an NBA spokesman said the league is reviewing the play to determine whether further discipline should be administered. However, Brown doesn’t advocate a suspension or upgrading the foul to the more-serious Flagrant-2 level.

“That kid waited at our bus, trying to get to Gerald, and he apologized to me,’’ Brown said. “If he had a history of that (rough play), I might feel different, but I just think it was a hard foul.’’

I’m at least happy Andrew tried to see Gerald.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Good for Bynum.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

well i guess Bynum didnt mean to have somebody hurt, but it was still a reckless play.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

The least he could have done. I didn’t want to believe Andrew was a bad person.

  • Julius J. Hornswaggle IV

My Gawd, stat line shows 46 minutes for O.J. vs. Thunder, connecting on 4 of 15. Give the guy a rest.

Kevin Durant can challenge LeBron for the best player in the world

Durant in no way can challenge LeBron for best player in the world, neither can LeBron. Kobe is occupying that position.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

“If he had a history of that (rough play), I might feel different, but I just think it was a hard foul.”
    Maybe this is the start.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I knew Bynum had to feel like complete sh!t when he found out how potentially serious Gerald’s injury was. Durant and B Roy have clearly entered the upper echelon of perimter players in today’s game. And I still think KD is just getting started. Hats off to Wake Forest, they played their asses off and Aminu was HUGE. I still hated that trveling call in the final seconds. Why punish a guy for getting a tough board in traffic before landing on a player who’s rolling around in the paint? Bah…

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Johnny Flynn going off last night! Right on time… I still think he goes pro this season. Why wait, when the perception of this draft is that its so “shallow”? I think he’s the most talented PG in college right now (I still dont fully consider Steph Curry a PG, we’ll see if NBA scouts do)

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

swoon? In love with..? What, tigerbeat magazine up in here? You quirky girls.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

Yes, ciolkstar, Flynn is sick. And I can’t believe that Eric Devendorf is still in college.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

8 – 9 from three? Eddie hizzle is unconscious lately. And the celtics keep on rolling. Spooky how they keep finding more options on O.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

BET. Really? Those zoom phenoms Gay’s wearing are just a jordann XI ripofff! For nice shoes, check Amaré’s foamposite lite’s (road colourway). Those are suhweet.

  • Sebastian B. O. Bunionstow, esq.

House is an incredibly streaky shooter. Some nights the ball and rim look like a pea shot into the ocean.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Darksaber, do you know if Amar’e will wear those at All-Star?

  • BigWalt206

ciolkstar…Johnny Flynn is no Isaiah Thomas

  • Phil B

all of portland shares your love affair with broy.

and as for portland wishing they could redo the draft… not yet. i still think oden was the right choice. portland doesn’t need more scoring, they are one of the better offensive teams in the league (when you adjust for pace). defense is where they need help. oden will help with that. and he’s not a bust or anything… he had 14 pts, 14 rbs and 3 blocks against okafor last night.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

hi Ryne. No info on Amare’s kicks at asg. But since he switched from hyperdunks to foamposite’s around x-mas, i’m betting on it. Probably in a special colour to match the fiery western jerseys

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

When did I say Isiah Thomas, Big Walt? I’m just saying that I’d take Flynn over any other PG in the nation right now (which doesn’t include Brandon Jennings), I’m a big fan of Flynn’s game and think he’s going to be a serious pro.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

btw, whats up with the spelling of STAT’s first name lately? Seen all kinds of variatons

correction, Tmac was BLOCKED on the last second shot….

The Clips made the Bulls look efficient. Enough said.

  • Keith

Oh and just so everyone knows – Baron davis is getting pure hate from Clippers fans. I think the consensus is that his injury and the overall effect he seems to have on the team is reason enough to want him traded.

Personally, people that think that are fools.

  • Jessi

how about them Texas boys last night… ford, durant & aldridge!

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Didn’t this same thing happen to Baron Davis in New Orleans?

Jessi, and soon Augustin will be doing his thing as well. Great pros that school’s turned out recently.

Also the Clippers anouncer talking about Ty Thomas betting traded for Lionel Aldridge was dope.

Kevin Durant is starting to look like that guy right now. Boy in a couple of years with westbrook and some more key pieces(blake griffin?)the thunder will be a good team with a horrible name instead of a bad team with a horrible name.

I have to agree with what everyone is saying about BRoy – he is a joy to watch for anybody who really appreciates and understands the game of basketball. While not as physically dominant as many of the premier players in the league, his game is polished and he has a bright future.

As far as the talk of Oden being a bust, when are people gonna learn to wait? I know blogs need something to talk about, but how can a player be a bust halfway into his first season into the NBA when he’s putting up double doubles on a consistent basis…
