So, About This J.O.-Matrix Trade Rumor

by Marcel Mutoni

All weekend long, rumors swirled about a potential deal between the Miami Heat and Toronto Raptors. Word is that Miami is willing to take on Jermaine O’Neal and his battered body (plus the massive contract), while Toronto gets the perennially unhappy Shawn Marion (and his expiring deal).

The Toronto Star has the details:

The Raptors are moving toward a significant mid-season trade that would ship Jermaine O’Neal to the Miami Heat for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks in a deal involving highly paid veterans unable to fit seamlessly into new situations.

Multiple league sources confirmed yesterday that talks have progressed to the point where the trade, although not imminent, could be finalized when the Heat are satisfied O’Neal is healthy enough to help them in their drive for the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Toronto’s braintrust is ready (and somewhat desperate) to make this thing happen immediately, but the Heat are cautiously waiting to see just how healthy O’Neal is first, and if he can truly help them secure a playoff spot this season. And naturally, Pat Riley is downplaying the whole thing.

Adding fuel to the speculation, however, were both players’ absence from their respective lineups yesterday.

    O’Neal’s Health: very, very, very, very, veryveryvery big IF

  • namik

    Doesn’t really make sense for Miami. Maybe 4 years ago, not today. Plus they can get more for Marion.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

    This would be a sad trade of epic proportions. But it might work out.

  • http://www.slamonline.com CB4

    I think the trade will benefit the raptors but not the heat. Marion is just what the raps need

  • jay

    throw starburry in the mix to make this the blockbuster from hell…

  • thesubwayconnection

    Marion = Moon. Marcus Banks is better than anything the Raptors have after Calderon at the PG spot, though.

  • http://yahoo.com ANJOE

    OH-ow. not really sure with JO’s health.

  • niQ

    PLEASE LET THIS TRADE HAPPEN! raptors need marion! and Miami have not had a decent Centre since shaq. JO could be their answer (when healthy)

  • slamfan4life

    i also heard that LA might deal Odom for O’neal

    but JO has ALWAYS been injury prone is career soooooo i would be really hesitant to do this

  • Torrance

    Calderon could be what Marion needs to reboot his career, no? That, and a brainwash.

  • ati

    If they do it they basically traded Shaq for JO. They should have kept him in the first place. Chalmers-Wade-Beasley-Haslem-Shaq would be a nice Lineup.

  • killa

    its perfect for botch teams miami needs a big man, haslem cant get it done at centre all year, and i think zo is not comin back. plus clears some playin time beasley . for the raps the the perfect wing man for their sqaud and get to leave bargni in the startin spot

  • ENDS

    I just doesn’t make sense unless Pat Riley knows something we dont, which he usually does

  • http://www.nba.com iLL wiLL

    Make this ish happen. JO was a disaster that was waiting to happen. It’s happened already. Come on Riley, make this happen!

    They get rid of Marion, They get some size. This is ill not sick!

  • Orlando Green

    Assuming O’neal can stay somewhat healthy, this trade is great for both teams. Miami has too many wing guys Marion, Wade, Beasley. If they get rid of Marion that balances out the roster more and gives more chances for Beasley to become Beastley.
    As for Toronto, the Bosh and O’neal combination works well at times, especially when O’neal gets the task of guarding the big “bruiser” on the other team. This frees up Bosh, he can roam on defence and he has more energy for offence. However, with Marion in the line up, they can become more of a balanced, running, up and down team. If Toronto can keep Marion, his presence will surely aid in luring Steve Nash North of the boarder.

    lose-lose situation.

  • http://www.commuto.com SteveA

    This trade is actually pretty good for Miami. JO has shown that he can still play this year with tough D and some great offensive games. He knee has been a concern, but I still think it will improve them a lot with a lineup of Chalmers, Wade, Beasley, Haslem and Oneal. That’s actually a pretty crazy line up.

    As for the Raps, it will improve them but it’s still not the solution they need, which is a shooting guard who can create his own shot. Right now then have no one who can really create their own shot on the wing, and Marion will not be that person. He is a slight improvement over Moon, at 10x the salary.

  • a_whiteman

    Shawn marion is nothing like jamario moon. His shot is more consistent, he can guard 1 through 4 CONSISTENTLY, rebounds like a mad man and hits the 3, moon does not even come close to marion. I want marion to come to the raptors so bad!!!!!

    haha @ anton – its like the 5th terminator movie where they are all too old but still tryin to save sarah connor.

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

    then Amare shows up halfway through: “You guys planning to play no defense without me?”
    *dramatic round of high fives*

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

    How long does JO have left on his contract? if its more than two more seasons the Heat shouldn’t even consider this…

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

    Althouh, this deal would open up some time for Beasley and give Miami the post presence they’re so obvoiusly lacking… but still, I wouldn’t want to be stuck paying JO for the next 3-4 seasons.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

    Miami giving Boozer a amx deal woyuld be SO DUMB. He’s not a shot blocker or particularly good defender and signing him would stifle Beasley’s development. All Miami needs is a true defensive center and a veteran PG. I think Chalmers has the potential to be a legit starter soon enough…

  • Onions Baby Onions

    I would personally love this for the raps, but for the Miami perspective, Eboy where u at?

  • Jess

    JO’s health was the big IF when we signed him in the off-season. I like JO, and he played very well this season WHEN healthy…It is too bad that his injuries are slowing him down – but many expected this before coming north of the border..I would love to see Marion in TO – with Jose pushing the ball – he would flourish. Oh and with Banks coming over..can we please get rid of Solomon?? PLEASE….

  • jay

    i think this trade works for both teams. the matrix clearly benefited from the suns up and down style of play. bryan colangelo now in toronto i think will make this work for the matrix..similar style but with bosh as the focus but an up and down team. j oneil fits well in south beach…he can play power foward. beasley gets more minutes and miami has somewhat of a low post threat!

  • http://www.bbl.org.uk Josh D

    I like this trade, Heat get rid of an unhappy player with an expiring contract,Raps get rid of a guy who is always injured, and, with this move, B-Easy should be able to start

  • a_whiteman

    Co-sign jess get rid of solomon A S A P

  • Fitzy

    If this grade does or does not go through, the raptors lose, basically because sean marion will hit free agency this summer, and most likely won’t want to stay in canada anyways, it’s really not all that great, and if it doesn’t happen, then they’re stuck with a deteriorating centre, i’m not sure on jo’s contract years wise but money wise, he’s gettin paid to wear some nice suits, more than he is to play

  • Fitzy

    trade* and shawn

  • wilz

    as soon as the Matrix gets to toronto he’s going to think he’s a shooter…and we all know how that’ll look *shudder*..

  • wilz

    Bosh might go up for the alley-oop and get basket interference when Marion takes a shot..”sorry I thought it was a chest pass”

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    I too, hope this happens…..especially is JO has been dogging it just to get moved. If he plays at 80% of his capability the Heat will have made a move where they can actually compete for the next two seasons instead of just wishing to make the palyoffs.

  • Jose

    i really dont want this. it would be awesome(but improbable) if we got bosh for marion but i cant happen, That would be the sh*t

  • Jose

    it cant*

  • wilz

    get rid of Moon, Solomon,Kapono and we may be getting somewhere.
    any other raps fans a little disappointed they might have to see so much Bargnani over the next however many years?

  • wilz

    Moon just blew the game so you might as well just waive him

  • Jess

    Moon was terrible at the end…what was he thinking?…I am excited to see Bargnani..especailly if he keeps playing like this…The Raps need to do something NOW – before the season is officially done – thank god for the bottom of the eastern conference..we will be in the mix until the end.

  • http://www.myspace.com/hemantsbeats what

    It’s not like JO’s contract has six more years on it or something. It expires after next year, which means they will still have cap flexibility in the summer of 2010. This trade works for both teams. Miami gets a defensive presence inside if healthy and even if not they free up playing time for Beasley. Toronto adds some perimeter defense and frees up playing time for Bargnani.

  • The Promise

    If the deal does happen, Toronto becomes a contender, while Miami could end up missing the playoffs again. I think theres that big of a difference in who will get the better end of the deal.

  • Orlando Green

    Bosh for Marion…..lol

  • Fitzy

    I fail to see why everyone says this trade will make the raps a contender, i just don’t get it, since leaving phoenix marion’s numbers have been mediocre at best. He excels in a run n gun system, but can’t do much in a half court set except hit WIDE open shots, he should have never ask for a trade to leave phoenix

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

    Shawn Marion should play 2.7333333333 games for each team next year so he can see whether any of them make him happy.

  • Andrej

    this is good if JO ca stay healthy and he probabbly wud beacuse he wud have the will to play for the heat beacuse they wud make the playoffs and the raps are horrible but if the raps get marion they wud be way better cuz hes marion n hes dope but marion wud have a good distributer like nash not quite but like and he cud average 17 points in my mind if the raps do this they wud be back in the playoff picture next year of course

  • Tim

    A lot of people are missing the point, it is not necessarily about who is the better player is, it is all about the contracts.
    Both expire in 2010 O’Neals is $20 million and Marion is $17 million, Banks contract is $4 millon and expires later that 2010, that frees up $4mill for Miami. The added bonus would be if they acually make a difference this year, which I think both would.

  • j.c

    The raps are rediculous right now some one on the team needs to step up. i think bosh is a good player but there is just something not right with this team i think it might be wise for the raps to blow it up because even if we get marion we are going no where for the next two years. blow it up and in two years we could possibly make a big run via free agents and draft picks.

  • Krishan

    I love how russ divided 82 with 30. Symmetry is underrated.

  • lewph

    BIG WIN FOR MIAMI!!! RAPS NOT SO MUCH. RAPS DONT HAVE THE RUN AND GUN OFFENSE NEEDED FOR MARION TO PROSPER. ABOVE SOMEONE MENTIONED A CONSISTENT SHOT THAT MARION HAS? THAT HAS YET TO BEE SEEN IN MIAMI. SINCE THIS SEASON BEGAN THIS MONTH IS MARION’S ONLY GOOD MONTH. THE BENEFIT OF A HEALTHY J.O. IS FAR GREATER FOR MIA. IN MIA’S LOSSES TO THE RAPS THIS YEAR J.O. SHOWED HE CAN STILL BALL. PLUS, MARION HAS MISSED A HANDFUL OF GAMES FOR MIA THIS YEAR TOO. MARION HIMSELF HAS BACK ISSUES, WHICH NEVER GO AWAY. JUST ASK T-MAC. I HAVEN’T EVEN TOUCHED THE BIGGEST BENEFIT FOR MIAMI, THEY GET RID OF GARBAGE MARCUS BANKS IN THIS DEAL!!!! J.O.’S DEAL ENDS RIGHT IN TIME FOR D-WADE TO GET A MAX CONTRACT AND IF WE WANT TO RESIGN J.O. IT WOULDN’T GO AGAINST US FOR THE TAX. PLUS THIS WHOLE THIS OPENS ANOTHER POSITION TO BRING BACK ZO AND SIGN A VET PG. (STARBURY!!!)

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    “Stan Van Gundy is definitely going to be a permanent member of this squad for years to come.”- Pat Riley.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

    “Shawn Marion is definitely not going to be traded.”- Pat Riley.

  • Nelly

    This is defenitly a win win for both teams. Toronto needs a good forward even though theyh might have andrea bargnani he just might be needed to play the power spot and plus Jermaine o neal isnt having a career season with the raptors after his knee got messed up yet again. And It helps miami because they need a Center and they have to many forwards so at least they need to give 1 up so that beasley can show his true talent. But miami needs at least 1 or 2 more players that should match up the salary of J.O.Its a win win situation this is what the Linups should look like for both teams if the trade works out

    Miami

    C=Jermaine O Neal
    PF=Udonis Haslem
    SF=Michael Beasley
    SG=Dwayne Wade
    PG=Mario Chalmers

    Toronto

    C=Chris Bosh
    PF=Andrea Bargnani
    SF=Shawn Marion
    SG=Anthony Parker
    PG=Jose Calderon
