The Celtics Want Marbury and … Reggie Miller?!

by Marcel Mutoni

At least, they did anyway.

Appearing as a guest on the Dan Patrick radio show yesterday, the former Pacer admitted that Danny Ainge and the C’s – among others – extended him an invite prior to the season.

The Boston Globe has the details:

Former NBA shooting guard Reggie Miller admitted earlier today on the Dan Patrick show that he received calls from both the Celtics and Cavaliers earlier this season asking if he would be interested in playing. It was the second inquiry in the last two years that the Celtics have made into the availability of Miller’s services.

Miller contemplated joining the Celtics before last season’s championship run but ultimately decided to stay in the broadcast booth.

As for the Boston front office, they’re not done with old geezers from the NBA’s past. According to Danny Ainge, the door is still open not just for Miller, but also for the likes of PJ Brown and the recently retired Alonzo Mourning.

No word yet if the Celtics have secretly joined some underground seniors’ league.

anything to get Reggie out of that TNT booth.

  • ENDS

Ask them if they want Penny Hardaway and Magic Johnson. There still available and an upgrade at poit

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

upgrade? Over whom? Rondo the stats machine or Eddie “i just rediscovered my shooting touch last week and the magic/mavs can cry me a river about it” House? Surely you jest.

  • http://danchamb.com.br/Home/ Lz – Cphfinest3

The Celtics are looking to become the AC Milan of basketball.

  • ENDS

Over hall of fame gaurd Magic Johnson. N***** please who is eddie House

  • ENDS

I’d still take old Magic and Penny over Eddie and Rambo

  • ENDS

It was a joke at first, but lets be really real

  • niQ

they should call up stockton and malone.

  • Ritchie

I’d like to see Reggie back on the court. And be able to watch TNT without hearing him.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

If this means I don’t have to listen to his “color” commentary anymore, I’m all for it.

  • Todd Spehr

Give Reggie half a chance to pat himself on the back and he’ll do it

  • donlaker

i like cheryl miller maybe the celtics can get her a 10 day contract she did teach reggie how to shoot….

  • ENDS

Parish Bird and Mchale might come walking through that door…

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

    What neaorin (and others) said.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Eddie House HAS been shooting his ass off recently, and Rondo just needs to stay aggressive.

  • donlaker

  • JoeMaMa

    Bring back Dino Radja.
May as well call up Dana Barros.
    And M.L.’s towel.

  • tom

co-sign everyone who wants him back on the floor just to get him away from commentating

  • Benoit Benjamin

Allan Houston fills the vet bill and was wilin to play.

  • http://spaceshipjay/myspace.com Spaceship Jay

I’d rather hear Reggie than Cheryl and her 1990′s SWV/WuTang Clan slang. “Boooyaaa!” “That boy be ball’n till he’s fall’n!” Yessh.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

    This is hilarious

  • Keith

Any audio of Reggie Miller is now known as ‘ear r*pe’.

    Is Glen Rice available?

  • http://slamonline.com Chris O’Leary

You guys can’t be serious. You’d want to see Reggie Miller back on the court?. Cheap, whiny, cheating, all-the-glory-after-the-buzzer-sounded-with-the-ball-still-in-your-hands-but-the-refs-let-you-build-a-career-on-it-anyway Reggie Miller? Please. The NBA should pay me to have to watch that ass clown.

  • JE

Can we not just get Reggie INSTEAD of Starbury?

  • method526

    where’s eddie jones at???

  • neibo

    co-sign tom…
dana barros was a heavily underated player and would fit nicely on that celtic roster…
P.S. Yall complain about Miller’s color work…but he’s not as near as bad as “Matt Bullard & Clyde Drexler” down here in H-Town..
They can even make an overtime game seem mundame…

  • Diesel

They went and got Cassell last year, now Miller this year…Ainge must have a thing for players that look like aliens.

  • Suge

…and I thought I was the only cat who thought Reggie was the corniest White guy color(less) commentating. I’d rather hear Bill Walton’s acid-tripping, overly-dramatic B.S.

As for Marbury, SLAM’s always given him love since H.S. in Coney Isle, but was he always that big of a b*tch, personality-wise? I still blame him for breaking up “Showbiz & KG” in Minnesota. Greece is still interested, right?

  • Ken

Anything to get Reggie out of commentating would be fantastic.

  • matt

besides the old guys, would livingston not be a good fit for the celtics? i mean a 6’7” guard ain’t a bad thing besides rondo and house …… and let marbury stay where he is…..

  • jackyl

    this really is hilarious

  • jackyl

and where is there open gyms in NYC??!!

  • http://slamonline.com PolowdaJon

    Buck Williams any one?

  • BostonBaller

I guess this banter is better than Celtic bashing. lol. Don’t sleep on Rondo b/c he keeps improving and he does a very good job setting up his teammates. If any of you have watched ANY Celtic games then you must admit (even if it is to yourself) that Rondo not only holds his own against the top guards but often out plays them. As far as E House, he was brought here to shoot and that’s what he does. Regardless if he is hitting them the defense has to guard against it which opens up the lane. BBall 101.

Miller (if he can still shoot) would do the same thing on a higher level b/c teams would fear his shot. I’ve stated before that I’d take Alonzo unless he retired for health reasons.

    Have a great day folks..

  • http://www.slamonline.com mat smith

    wasnt this reported ages ago?

  • BostonBaller

Oh yeah, I meant E HGouse could shoot the ball, not just his mouth. lol

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Reggie Miller is the man. He can do what he wants.

  • jackyl

    Boing, where at??

  • Tommy Patron

Reggie Miller is a foot-shuffling, flopping, whining loser. Boston would be worse with him than without him. Ideally, he would sign, play a few regular season games, then realize he can’t get it done, retire and watch the C’s win again.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Darksaber: Eddie House sucks. No sh!t they could use an upgrade at backup point.

  • http://www.bbl.org.uk Josh D

Man, if he joined the Celtics,Reggies mailbag would be really biased you just imagine him saying the answer to all of the questions is Celtics r da best!*
    *I’m not a celtics fan

  • wilz

he might have to spit those marbles out before he steps on the floor..

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

Celtics just signed John McCain to a long-term contract.

  • eric d

Buck Williams is a hell of a rebounder. but i think they need to go bigger, Joe Barry Carroll.

  • eric d

    Joe Barry Carroll.

  • The Promise

Awesome. Reggie was my favorite player when he played… bring him back so he can get a ring! Starbury would be a good changeup to Rondo also. Go for it D. Ainge.

  • http://www.myspace.com/hemantsbeats what

At this rate, Ainge, why not just sign yourself?

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

Stephon was just in the office here for over an hour. Amazing.

  • Gumdrop

If you’re serious we need stories Ben.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

This isn’t news – Didnt we discuss/tear to shreds/explore this point of interest a few months ago…? Like when it ACTUALLY happened..?
    I loved Glen Rice.

  • http://slam brand new

    danny “Hoosier(whos your) daddy” granger

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Really, Ben? Is there going to be another Starbury cover coming soon? *kidding*

  • Mikey Rockz

why would they choose miller, he’s decent, but not worth the money. they should get michael jordan, he can probably drop 15-20 ppg, and maybe catch that sixth man award of he decides to come out of retirement again.

  • Uzi

Bring back Kareem .. n giv Bill Walton a call while ur at it !

  • Uzi

Ahmed Rashad has deep range off the corner. He should fit in perfect instead of Pose!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Tommy Patron: You are so stupid its not even funny.

  • Cp34mVP

Underground senior line. LMAO. I mean Reggie Miller Can Still Play.. FOr like a quarter and be done. for the night so it could be worth it. And it would be nice to have Starbury on the Celts.. Have a dominant point guard. He would be stable in BeanTown because there Championship Caliber.

I gotta start being early on this.. LOL

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

wow, Ben that must have felt like twilight zone, eh? Did you go online with him and upon seeing these comments he shole his fist, vowing vengeance?

  • Monkeyball

Speaking of old-timers. Will someone at SLAM please write a feature about the statistical milestones hit by players this year? J Kidd will finish the season as with the fourth-most assists of any player, all time (passing Isaiah and the Big O). Shaq will finish the season with the fifth-most points (passing the Dream, Moses Malone, and the Big E).

  • ThaRussian

they might sign Bill Russell, Havilcek, Cooz, and Pistol’s ghost (no disrespect, RIP)

  • jfoxgotgame

Percy miller or reggie miller. Let me here ya say uhhhh!or Rex Chapman anybody. I loved him.
I smell another JORDAN comeback. Just make it the 80′s east allstars. Ainge is and 80s freak. hell bring back DJ. Isiah could probably still get the job done. Or just sign Terrel Owens. Ok im getting silly. Sign ME im nice as they come in the YMCA league for real!!!catawba county’s flyest white boy

  • jamison

and they might sign chamberlain =)

  • rikson

Hey C’s: Want to repeat? Then stay away from Stephon “the brain astronaut” Marbury!

  • Colin_England

    Chris Webber anyone?

  • KickFreak

Sorry but Webber is broke…Not to take anything from im but he is done.

  • The Promise

Webber was done when he played in Detroit, for that matter.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

    jamison…the stilt passed away dude…that wasn’t nice.

  • Blinguo

The Celtics must know they can’t even get a Wedgie Evans at this point and aren’t even looking at serviceable players or Free Agents anymore, but retired and just retired players? Insane. (Get the Foyle up there then. His Matters of Democracy will get you to the 2nd ring when they use him to negotiate & bring in Obama)

  • http://myspace.com/arodakaroman and1ballermj2350

    Go Steph!

  • http://google c_cantrell

mourning and miller would actually probably be ok in boston.. yal know miller can still stroke n he could play 15 min a night jus coming in here n there n hit some open jumpers.. hard to imagine miller and ray ray in the game at the same time.. now that would be awesome

  • Timothy

If reaggie miller would come back even for one more season man there ticket sales would be crazy i would go all the way to boston just to see him play
