The Mo Williams Snub: Tragic, Fraudulent, a ‘Shamockery’

by Marcel Mutoni

At least, according to his teammate, Ben Wallace.

Members of the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball franchise were quite vocal after finding out that their point guard, Mo Williams, wouldn’t be heading to Phoenix next month for the mid-season gala.

But none more so than Big Ben, who provided one of the most brilliant reactions of all-time. From the Plain-Dealer:

“It’s a tragedy,” Ben Wallace said. “I think it’s an injustice. It’s a fraud. We’ve got the best record in the league, and we’ve only got one guy going. You always make it the next year, after the year you were supposed to make it. It’s a travesty and a sham and a mockery. It’s a shamockery.”

Shamockery. Love it.

LeBron James was peeved as well, and went on about the “disrespect” that Cleveland hoops continue to get.

As for Williams, the only guy truly affected by this, he didn’t let the so-called nub upset him too much (at least not publicly).

As a Cavs fan, I’m psyched. Motivation. God forbid they ever get healthy, this can only be a good thing.
Oh, and LeBron is terrible at basketball. Wanted to get that out of the way early.

Mo williams got the east guard snub this year just like Calderon got it last year. I dont thinkg the Magic deserve 3 all stars…and the Cavs def. deserve another representative…look at the difference Mo Williams has made to the Cavs this season.

  • [...] Ben Wallace was busy inventing new words to express his outrage, Doc Rivers stuck to plain old English when discussing his [...]

  • ciolkstar Posted: Jan.30 at 10:12 am
when the Magic are hot from the beyond the arc they are really tough to deal with. And Coutney Lee has played well, but Pietrus definitely makes them better.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Jan.30 at 10:16 am
Personally, I’m juts glad Devin Harris, Joe Johnson and Granger made it over Mo. My fantasy team is getting strong representation in the ASG. I mean if Mo makes it, either Devin, Jameer, or Joe Johnson doesn’t. I think Jameer has had a better season than Mo, while Joe and Devin clearly have, anyway.

  • ENDSwing Posted: Jan.30 at 10:22 am
co-sign. Not that Mo has not had an impact but tell me Premirer is not an all-star this year?

  • ENDSwing Posted: Jan.30 at 10:22 am
IMO so not to offend Hisham

  • Hisham Posted: Jan.30 at 10:26 am
    Homer!

  • Hisham Posted: Jan.30 at 10:28 am
by the way, i have no problem with nelson making the all star game. good choice.

  • ENDSwing Posted: Jan.30 at 10:31 am
so then what the hell is the beef.
BTW Ben Wallce did not in vent this word he ripped it from a beer comercial

  • Mendel Posted: Jan.30 at 10:32 am
Well I guess this should serve as motivation for LeBron sticking around in Clevland and earning respect for their basketball franchise. Altough they got blown the puck out by Orlando and it seems that LeBron is going to have to adjust to being touched when people defend him. Or maybe stern will impliment the no body checking LeBron rule here in the next couple weeks as teams become hip to it.

  • Hisham Posted: Jan.30 at 10:35 am
no beef at all. Your homerishness is very amusing, that’s all. no disrespect

  • Blinguo Posted: Jan.30 at 10:45 am
Traveshamockery. Forgot where someone said that before. But new words are nothing new with Cleveland. SLAM went with the “LEBRONIMANANCE!!” (sic?) not too many playoffs ago.

  • Mavus Posted: Jan.30 at 10:59 am
Just compare Mo Williams numbers to Jameer Nelson’s… Mo should be in..

  • BETCATS Posted: Jan.30 at 11:01 am
Because you really expect Big Ben to say that Mo didnt deserve it? THe man who is helping Wallace have his best offensive season in a while is suppose to not have Wallace’s support?

  • vmcb Posted: Jan.30 at 11:09 am
I’m not sold on Jameer Nelson. This has been his only good season, whereas Mo has been playing well the past few. Also, I just hate the Magic, so I’m biased.

  • BostonBaller Posted: Jan.30 at 11:11 am
WHAT IS THE CRITERIA FOR ONE OVER THE OTHER? IT COMES DOWN TO PERSONAL PREFERENCE/TEAM LOYALTY. MO’S NUMBERS ARE COMPARITABLE TO THE OTHER PG’s BUT AREN’T WE FORGETTING WHAT A PG IS SUPPOSED TO BE KNOWN FOR? ASSISTS RIGHT (RONDO? MY GREEN LOYALTY. LOL) IF BEN IS SO PISSED WHY DON’T HE MAKE A STATEMENT AND HIT A FREE THROW AND EARN HIS $$. IF BOSTON ONLY GOT 2 IN THEN THE COACHES SHOULD HAVE EVENED IT OUT AT 2 MAGIC, 2 CAVS & 2 CELTICS. 3 PT CONTEST: HOUSE & ALLEN LUCKY GOT FIRED FROM THE CELTICS. LOL!!!

  • Doc Funk Posted: Jan.30 at 11:19 am
Its amazing how efficiently caps lock can invalidate a post.

  • BostonBaller Posted: Jan.30 at 11:25 am
    lol..SO TRUE…and I wasn’t the least bit angry.

  • Phil B Posted: Jan.30 at 11:25 am
Phil B = Blazers and Kentucky Wildcats.

  • Tripset30 Posted: Jan.30 at 11:29 am
It came down to Devin Harris, Jameer Nelson, and Williams. Harris has had a breakout season and is putting up the best stats of the three. Stats aren’t everything, and even though the Nets aren’t exactly world-beaters, they’re still competitive. If you don’t buy any of that, he’s the leading scorer on a team with Vince Carter, who isn’t exactly shy shooting the rock. Nelson gets the best looks out of the three, thanks to Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu (sp) commanding so much attention. That being said, he still has to make the shots. He essentially gets looks similar to Rafer Alston, and if Alston shot the percentages that Nelson did he’d be an all-star. Which brings us to Williams. At first he was like that new kid trying to fit in with everybody at school, which I think is why his all-star status suffered a little bit. He’s been on fire lately, and if you look at the Cavs jump from last season to this one, he’s basically the only change in personnel (although J.J. Hickson is coming on, too). Personally, I would have taken Williams before Nelson, but I didn’t have enough juice to make it happen. SLAM writers and message board monguls: do you think the NBA should wait until after the season to play their all-star game, kind of like football? The snub percentage would inevitably go down. For those that argue interest would go down as well, how many people realistically watch the all-star game as it is?

  • Doc Funk Posted: Jan.30 at 11:34 am
The pro bowl, despite being end of year, still has snubs. There is no perfect system. Nobody will be happy unless the All-Star rosters were 50 players each side. Even then, someone would be mad that Andray Blatche made it over Jason Kapono.

  • BostonBaller Posted: Jan.30 at 11:46 am
Well I guess the snub motivation didn’t exactly work for Cleveland last night. Mo W 12pts, 3 assts, 2 rbs & 2 to’s: B Wallace 2 pts, 3 rbs & 1 asst. The ones that made it did ok I guess. J Nelson: 18 pts, 3 assts, 5 rbs & 1 to : R Lewis: 19 pts, 5 rbs, 5 assts & 3 to’s. We will take a look at what happens with Rondo and Ray tonight against AI (a starter) and the Pistons. lol.

  • bumarty Posted: Jan.30 at 12:45 pm
Is losing by 11 really getting blown out as someone mentioned earlier? I’m pretty sure that’s about the Cavs average margin of victory this year. Should have been 2 from the C’s, 2 from the Magic, 2 from the Cavs. Snubbed is right.

  • Berry Sneaky Posted: Jan.30 at 12:47 pm
Mo deserved it, but annother guy who nobody seems to care about, or vote for is MELO, sure he was injured for the last 2-3weeks but comon, hes one of the faces of the league, a presence evrygame he plays in, whether it be on Team USA or The Nuggets, and Plus the nuggets are up their in THEE western conference. You Can’t tell me that Chaunceyy should be the only one goin to the allstar game from that team, Even NENE shoulda got a look the ways hes playing this season

  • kboogie201 Posted: Jan.30 at 1:32 pm
Waaahh “It’s a travesty and a sham and a mockery. It’s a shamockery”. If you want some fancy wordplay, someone should go interview Clyde Frazier and see what he thinks about David Lee getting snubbed. D Lee is leading the L in double-doubles at the 5 position..Wow I thought he had a legit shot at making it averiging 15 pts- 11 reb’s & 2 assists.

  • MeloMan13 Posted: Jan.30 at 2:09 pm
cosign Berry: Melo not being in the ASG for the 3rd time in his career is a Travesty. i really dont know what else to say. anyone tht watches basketball should know that Melo should be in the ASG

  • Josh D Posted: Jan.30 at 2:12 pm
Blame the fans for voting in AI, LeBron

[...] The Mo Williams Snub [...]

  • DruWil Posted: Jan.30 at 3:26 pm
Come July, when the Cavs wins it all, we will all forget we’re having this discussion.

  • ClydeSays Posted: Jan.30 at 4:47 pm
Ben screwed up the quote. It is: “It’s a travesty, a sham & a mockery! It’s a TRAVISHAMOCKERY!” Anyway, Mo Williams? C’mon. He’s got a nice jumper but he let Kevin Martin go off for 45 pts the other night.

  • what Posted: Jan.30 at 8:48 pm
Yeah it’s supposed to be “Travashamockery”. It’s from a Miller Lite commercial from a few years ago.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Jan.30 at 10:27 pm
David Lee and Mo Williams not making it is bull.
@ Josh D: Allen Iverson is a staple of the All-Star game. His stats have gone down because he’s playing with so many scorers.
He’s still one of the best players in the league.

  • Tommy Vercetti Posted: Jan.31 at 1:04 am
Mo really deserved to go. No doubt he was robbed.

  • Hursty Posted: Jan.31 at 6:56 pm
clyde- right. Because a 6′2 Mo Williams is expected to guard 6′7 Kevin Martin. That totally makes sense. The 45 points obviously weren’t even in the *slightest* bit achieved because Pavlovic and Sexyback were guarding him?

  • Roy Posted: Feb.1 at 11:31 am
‘Shamockery’… Damn, I’m loving that word already… Thanks Big Ben for creating that word… :D

  • Jared Posted: Feb.2 at 9:40 am
Truth be told, Bob Odenkirk created it in the miller lite commercial when he said this is a traveshamockery…and David Lee got snubbed harder than mo…there’s like a bazillion guards in the east ballin out of their minds this season, rondo didn’t get a spot you don’t see his teammates crying about it. Take your improved record and do something productive with it, don’t cry about disrespect.
