Post Up: Chris Paul = 3×2+7

And a W for the Hornets.

by Holly MacKenzie

Oh what a night.

Remember that song? It reminds me of my senior year of high school and one of many grad parties where for some reason, the only CDs we could find were old songs because someone forgot to pack the right ones and accidentally brought their parents. Eventually, the right CDs were brought over, but in the meantime we had songs like that.

I went to the Raptors/Bulls game last night, and I’ll have notes over at my Court Surfing blog later today. What I will be pulling from my postgame quotes and my in-game notes, is to be decided. It wasn’t the most entertaining game. Rose is unreal though, I’ll give you that. Goodness.

You know what else was unreal? Golden State taking the Kings to TRIPLE overtime. By the end of the game (which the Kings won, 135-133), the Warriors had three guys foul out, and were Must be the shoes.without another four due to injury. Marcus Williams still was a DNP-CD, though.

I didn’t get to watch much of the action last night and unfortunately I missed Chris Paul’s night. Um… Yeah. 33 points. 10 rebounds. 11 assists. And, 7 steals. Seriously, almost a quadruple-double. And, he led his team to the victory, too. Maybe Chris is about to reinstert himself back into that MVP convo.

I hope so.

That San Antonio/LA Lakers game was a classic, wasn’t it? I thought Kob had won it for us when he drilled that 3 just as he had in Houston the night before. I was not, not, not a fan of the Sam Cassell dance he did on his way back upcourt. Yuck. Suits Sam C. Kobe, not so much.

Roger Mason. WOW. When he had the ball in his hands I was having flashbacks of that Christmas game in Phoenix. It wasn’t a three last night, but it was a three-point play as Derek Fisher got caught behind him and was called for the foul.

That was a painful one to take. Even more so as the final play ended up being my boy Ariza getting called for the travel as he drove to the basket. It was little consolation to hear my other favorite guys JVG and Mark Jackson both agree that there was not a travel on the play and either a no-call or a foul. I wanted the win.

What else? Too much happened last night. Ryne’s Jazz somehow managed to lose to the Thunder… BY 21!

Washington and New York combined for 250 points while Atlanta and the LA Clippers combined to miss 31 of their first 41 shots. Or, something ugly like that.

Andrea Bargnani had a career-high 31, in a loss to the Bulls.

Boston killed New Jersey by 30 and Miami pulled one out against Milwaukee. Beasley had a nice 21 on 8-11 from the floor off of the bench in that one.

Okay, I think I’ve updated as best as I can.

Between you and me, I kinda wish I didn’t have to write on that Raptors game and had instead spent the night watching League Pass. Bet you never thought you’d hear me say that!

Indiana 110 Detroit 106

With the return of Rip Hamilton, the Detroit Pistons are learning how to adjust to playing small ball. One night after losing a close one against the Bobcats, the Pacers took those Pistons to overtime and it paid off, as they took down Detroit 110-106. The overtime session was forced by Danny Granger who hit a jumper to tie things up at 93 with three seconds remaining. The Pistons would have two opportunities to win it in regulation both both Rip and Sheed missed on jumpers. In the extra session, the Pacers hit first as Troy Murphy hit a three to put the Pacers ahead and they never trailed again. Granger finished with 24 points and 10 rebouds for the Pacers as Murphy added 18 points and 13 rebounds and TJ Ford added 23 off of the bench. Rodney Stuckey scored 30 for the Pistons, Iverson had 23 and Sheed scored 17 points to go with 15 rebounds.

New Orleans 104 Dallas 97

When the Hornets were trailing early in the third, Chris Paul knew it was time to step it up. And step it up he did. Going up against Jason Kidd yet being guarded primarily by Antoine Wright, CP3 finished with line that will stand out this season as one of the best. Scoring 33 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, dishing 11 assists and stealing the ball 7 times, Paul willed his team to the victory as he ran circles around Wright and the Dallas defense. Besides Paul’s big night the Hornets held the Mavs to only 18 points in the fourth as they took over. Peja Stojakovic and David West each added 16 points for the Hornets as Tyson Chandler added 10 points and 14 rebounds. Dirk had 20 for the Mavs while Jason Terry poured in 28 off of the bench.

San Antonio 112 LA Lakers 111

In perhaps the game of the year, the San Antonio Spurs pushed the Lakers and withstood the pressure as the Lakers pushed back, taking it down to the very last seconds to pull out the win as Roger Mason answered what appeared to be a three-point dagger from Kobe Bryant with a bucket and a free throw of his own with 10 seconds remaining to give the Spurs a one-point lead. The Lakers would give the ball to Trevor Ariza on the final play and he was called for a travel, game over. The Lakers were down 11 in the fourth before they came roaring back thanks to a 19-5 run that saw them take over the lead and go up by two before Mason’s heroics. Mason finished with 18 points for the Spurs as Manu Ginobili scored 27 and Tim Duncan added 20 points 10 rebounds and 8 assists. Kobe led LA with 29 points, 10 assists and 7 rebounds. Pau Gasol scored 21 points and Andrew Bynum added 18.

Oklahoma City 114 Utah 94

Someone said yesterday that the Thunder are the best six-win team they’ve seen. Last night, they went out and got their seventh in convincing fashion against the Utah Jazz, thanks to a decisive third quarter where they outscored Utah, 36-23 and a rebounding advantage that saw them outrebound the Jazz 48-26. In that third quarter, the Thunder used a 22-7 run to take control of the game and despite the Utah’s best efforts, held on for the victory. Jeff Green had 23 points for the Thunder as Kevin Durant scored 21 and Russell Westbrook had 22. Deron Williams led the Jazz with 25 points and 6 assists as Kyle Korver and Kosta Koufos each scored 14 off of the bench.

Sacramento 135 Golden State 133 3OT

Yes, you read it correctly, triple-overtime. My goodness. This one was something else. While the Warriors came into the game without Stephen Jackson, Brandon Wright and Marco Belinelli, by the end of it, Andris Biedrins, CJ Watson and Corey Maggette were joining them on the bench after fouling out. This game just would not end as player after player stepped up to make the big play. It was Kevin Martin who tied the game in regulation on a jumper with 21 seconds on the clock to force the first overtime and then Kelenna Azubuike drilled a three with nine seconds remaining in overtime to tie things up at 115 and force the second overtime. In the second extra session, again it was Kevin Martin who scored with five seconds left and then we were given the third overtime. A John Salmons jumper off of a Kevin Martin miss gave the Kings the two point lead with 1.6 seconds remaining. On their final possession, Kelenna Azubuike attempted a three-pointer that was on point but just rimmed out, game over, Kings win 135-133.

Now, see, LAST night would’ve been a good night for Kobe to score 30. Or even, say, 31.

  • Myung

Thankfully and mercifully, the Hawks finally ended their losing streak. A match up vs. the Clippers is always a welcome sight on the schedule. It’d be nice to have Al Horford back soon.

  • Myung

The Spurs have let some good players get away over the years (Hedo, Stephen Jackson, Scola, to name three), yet they drafted George Hill and signed Roger Mason and just keep on moving along. What a model franchise.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

“I was not, not, not a fan of the Sam Cassell dance he did on his way back upcourt. Yuck. Suits Sam C. Kobe, not so much”

This is why I fell in love with Holly’s writing from the very beginning.

Great, great game in SA, well played by both teams, clutch performances all around…..Kobe was outstanding in the last few minutes again…..and then in full display, shows exactly why the majority of non-Laker basketball fans around this country can’t stand the dude. Whatever Mamba…..your balls weren’t bigger than Roger Mason’s last night…..

If they were to meet in the playoffs again, it would be a great series and it’s without a doubt a tossup. And maybe the argument can be made that the Spurs are the best team in the West (taking into account how many games to injury they lost to Parker and Manu). Pretty scary…..

CP3, welcome back to the MVP talks. Pretty outstanding…..

Can’t believe the Pistons, again. Damn…..

Pretty nice sign that D-Wade completley sucked last night and the Heat still can get a road win…..

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

The Jazz are hopeless on the road, but they were also without Betrayal Skull Dude and The Paperboy…Chris Paul is out of the MVP conversation, so is Kobe, so it DWade. I feel sorry for them because they’re all having MVP-type seasons.

  • thesubwayconnection

    When was the last quad-double?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Myung, congrats to your boys for getting off their snide.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Holly, you’re probably right, but I thought Kobe’s dance was closer to the Bibby Bop.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Either way…it was ghey.

  • Andy

Roger Mason MUST be close to the best signing of the year.

  • Myung

Thanks, eBoy. I’ve been saying for a while now that we’re a 45-win team and NOT a championship contender, BUT in defense of the Hawks, I’ll say that their recent 4 game losing streak was to Orlando (twice), Philly, and PHX (on the road), which happen to be three of the hottest teams in the League right now. I mean, sure, we lost to Orlando by 90 points last Friday, but still…

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    It was only 90….:)

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Holly, Stuckey not only had 30 points, but 9 boards and 6 assists. And Detroit still lost. Again, going cold at the end of the game when we had the lead. I’m not sure who to blame, so i’ll just blame Curry. Why exactly he put Rip in for the final shot in regulation after he hadn’t played the ENTIRE 4th quarter was beyond me. Also, he pretty much sucked the rest of the game as well. I’m not happy, at all. If Rip is gonna keep playing like sh*t because his BFF is in Denver now, then ship his wannabe Cuttino Mobely a$$ out of town. Ok, rant done.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Oh good lord I did not known he did the Sam Cassell dance. Oh no, no, it can’t be. It cannot be. Oh my.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

“Wannabe Cuttino Mobley ass”. Uh oh……trouble in paradise.

Don’t fret kid, do what I did all last season….just curse dude’s out and then once they turn things around….you’ll feel like you actually had an effect on their performance.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

“Thank you, Mr. Bryant.” That’s why I meant to say. Because that… that was a gift.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Oh yes….Ryan….he did.

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

Great stuff as usual. I say again like I did on your CS piece…Roger Mason Jr. is this team’s big shot bob for the regular season so far.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

If you asked the inmates of Shawshank what happened to Derek Fisher, this is what they’d say to a man: “Refs f*cked him.”

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Russ, you can’t be serious….I hope.

  • Benoit Benjamin

@subwayconnection. If I’m correct, the last quadruple-double was the Admiral, and before that it was olajuwon. Don’t have the numbers though.

  • Benoit Benjamin
  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

Fish was scrambling to recover and get back inbounds, and Mason stepped backwards into his path. To me, that was a clear no-call. And this is coming from someone who was pulling for the Spurs.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I think that may have been a makeup for the non call on Duncan’s over the shoulder toss that just happened to go in when he got hammered a possesion earlier. And Ariza’s travel/block should have been a no-call.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

That was bullsh*t call. But other than that great game.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Don’t cry Shia…the Knicks won.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Actually, just remembering…..the shot of the night last night was Manu’s 40 footer after he broke Ariza’s ankles going behind the back and pulled it in Odom and Bynums mugs at the end of the first half. That was an incredible shot.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

I don’t know that the call was so bad considering D fish didn’t object in any way. I just question whether or not they should have made the call.

  • http://slamonline.com Tzvi T

Yep. I’m sure you accidentally listened to that cd.

  • Vannshy

Eboy, did u see Kobe’s reaction after that shot ?
btw im really satisfied with this win, the fact that L.A shot 56.6% and we still managed to get the W that was sweet, i went to work this morning with a smile on my face

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Yes I did, Vannshy…..his giant balls must have felt terrible.

Co Co, I’m with you on the call, 100%.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Considering all the calls Kobe got in the final minutes, Co Co, there’s no question in my mind Mason should have at least got that foul call.

  • Tom

That Fisher call at the end was BS Russ. But it was a home-court call. If the tables were turned and Fish is taking that shot in LA he would get the whistle too. Still an incredible, incredible game…..I hope these two hook up in the playoffs.

Ginobli is one of the most fun players in the game to watch. Dude just makes defenders look stupid. His game actually reminds me a lot of Nick Van Exel.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

Plus Mason sold the hell out of that foul. I mean, let’s give the man some credit for his theatrics.

  • http://danchamb.com.br/Home/ Lz – Cphfinest3

Thx Holly. Some quick thoughts: Granger is going to be a fixture in the All-Star game for years to come. Stuckey too, just knew he was ready. Good for his development that they shipped Billups out, Pistons will be better in the long run because of this. Chris Paul is awesome. Happy that Spurs prevailed, why the heck did Ariza get the last shot? Thank you Kobe for doing that dance completely forgetting that it aint over till the horn sounds, sincerly thank you, just gave me another reason to dislike you. The 3OT wow – please more of that. Felt bad that Azubike’s last shot didn’t fall. Did any of you guys see Jet Terry slam on twohanded on Tyson Chandler? I haven’t seen Terry dunk for like 4 years and then he goes and does that trick. Weird.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

I’d completely forgotten that Jason Terry could dunk.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

And how many times did Manu rip Kobe up top? At least three. Oh well, at least we can all rest easy knowing the Lakers will still be on top of the power rankings.

Utah has a hard time winning on the road, especially without those injured. Remember this name: KOSTA KOUFOS! He has to make the ALL-ROOKIE TEAM. It would be a travesty if not. He plays on a veteran team, where rookies never never play, and he has impressed the general, Coach Sloan. Almost an impossible task. Koufos’ speed, athleticism, hands, skills and strength will make him an NBA all star someday. Name a better skilled and athletic center in the league right now? Hard to find one. WATCH THIS KID DEVELOP!

In the game Holly didn’t mention, I was happy to see Kirk get showcased and Larry Hughes get DNP-CDed. I’d rather see them straight-up timthomas him, but this is the next-best thing.

Darks; I’m going to Berlin on the 27th, that’s why so I wanted some pointers if you where from around there. For some reason I thought you hailed from Germany. Singapore, hmm interesting.. how’s life out there?

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

@LZ: Oh well must have been all my Dirk loving comments over the years, turned into a huge fan after meeting him a two years ago and spending some time together. Berlin? Sorry buddy, got no tips there, furthest i ever got to in Deutschland was Frankfurt and Stuttgart. But former co-workers of mine swore by Berlin. Supposed to be a great city to visit. The ‘Pore is real nice, feels like Switzerland, minus the alps and frosty weather. B-Ball’s on a lower level than i’m used to playing, but you can get good runs here.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

LZ: Um yeah, i’ve typed more about this in the last two days then I probably should have. To answer your question: Dismantle the team? Um, no. Right now it is a rookie headcoach who is struggling to find the teams identity. There is no reason to “start over” since they aren’t a bad team. The team can make any necessary changes at the end of the season when both AI and Sheed come off of the payroll. However, I do think Dumars needs to have a heart-to-heart with Rip to determine whether or not he is committed to the team since Billups is gone. He appears distant and uncaring. If he is, then ship him out. Yesterday.

  • http://danchamb.com.br/Home/ Lz – Cphfinest3

Darks; Yeah, must have been that. I too like Dirk. I’ve been to Berlin a couple of times, and can confirm that it’s a great place. Havn’t been there for around 10-12 years however so wanted the inside scoop. Cool I like Geneva. How are the living costs and safety in Singapore? Have a couple of friends who recently moved to Bangkok, and they can’t seem to stop talking about how great life is in the far East.

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

yeah, that darn Cuttino wannabe. (just busting your chops TAD)

  • http://danchamb.com.br/Home/ Lz – Cphfinest3

TAD; Thx, agree they aren’t a bad team, but they aren’t a championship winning team either. I would build around Stuckey, Prince, and Maxiell and ship everyone else out for younger talents and/or draft picks. You’re probably right that they should wait till summer, anyways Dumars usually knows what he’s doing. Agree with you take on the Mask.

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

LZ: 10-12 years hmm, well guess you’ll love it on the 27th. Place has seemingly changed a lot. Safety’s to the untrained eye is quite high here, you can walk around at all times of the day/night with no hassle. Very controlled atmosphere here in the Singa (kinda like a police state) But you do read of “crimes of passion” every once in a while in the papers. Real estate is costly, but general living costs are a’ight. Well compared to where i used to live.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Whoa slow down here, a couple of bad games from Rip and you guys are kicking him out of the D, already? He’s still got 7-8 years to give to the Pistons, imo.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I’d just put this out there……the last 5 seasons? You’re were pretty sure that the Pistons would be in the Conf Finals or right there on the doorstep. Today? With the current squad? Would we all be surprised if they got knocked out in the first round? Doubtful. So it may be time to start over.

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

I dig Maxiell’s game soooo much. that energy’s contagious. And i love them Shox Testify’s he’s been wearing since November 2007. They are no longer being made, where the hell does he keep getting those gorgeous shoes?

Darks; sounds like a nice place. Can you get Europe-level salaries there?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Z: Um, no he doesn’t. And I didn’t necessarily say just ship him out because i’m bored. I just know that Rip has been sulking since Chauncey left his side and he hasn’t been himself. It doesn’t have a damn thing to do with AI either. Rip has been getting his same looks and has just missed them. He also hasn’t been his all-out-hustle self. You can see it in his body language. Granted, he has been hurt and it could be that and the fact he is just in a slump. Whatever it is, I think that Dumars or Curry or both of them need to figure it out. If he is still out-of-sorts from the injury, then bench him until he gets a groove back.

  • AlbertBarr

Travel call on Trevor Ariza was Bullsh-t. I wanted that game to go to overtime. What the hell Kings! You get blown out the night before then run through three overtimes for a clutch victory on the road? What the hell is going on in Sacramento? Brad miller was $$ last night. 30/22. Nice. I wonder how many assists. CP3…wow.

    TAD
I’m still trying to grasp what the problem is with Detroit in the fourth quarter. Maybe it’s just they need to get a rhythm with each other. They play pretty well most of the game, but then seem to fold up at the end. Weird. No lead is safe. Although, the Pacers are a pretty good team.

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

Can’t stand his game?! I have NEVER heard that. EVER. Wow, shocking.

  • http://mundoalbiceleste.blogspot.com john

They prove it again that they still have it. Manu was a force from the bench. With Mason starting and Manu coming from the bench, there is plenty of firepower for the Spurs as compared to last season. Kobe was huge again but tonight it was Manu’s night.

And again, just like on D-Wade, he comes up with another monster block on Kobe.

Also a good night was for Nocioni, like Manu a bench power for the Bulls these days.

Eboy: Explain start over? What exactly are the Pistons doing by clearing cap space at seasons end? I don’t like that term “start over”. It makes the team sound like one or two players and a bunch of scrubs. Not the case. Why can’t a team just re-tool? And in reference to your “would we be surprised” if the Pistons got knocked out in the first round; in the same logic, would anyone be surprised if the team jelled and went on a run and won it all? Well, more than likely the majority would, but not me.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

And I agree with TAD about Rip. AI is not being a ballhog and everybody on that team is getting more than enough shots. In fact, Iverson is playing an amazing team game right now, and nobody is talking about because the Pistons are pretty mediocre. It’s sad. Everybody thought he would kill that team by chucking, but it’s not the case. Granted, he needs to improve his scoring, but he really has been a great player for that team. I wish Iverson could have played with Stuckey earlier in his career.

We know the team has the “ability” to gel and turn sh*t around, but c’mon, where is there a miracle cureall that’s going to catapult them over the Cavs, Celts or Magic? It’s not like the last few years where you put them automacially in that top tier discussion and if they flame out again…..after 5 seasons of not getting it done….it’s definitley time to break them up….sh*t, they already got rid of 2 of their fab five…so really, it’s just a matter of time before the turnover to a more youth-ridden squad takes over, and they already have some good strong young pieces to build around. You’re not thnking you’re building around Sheed and AI, are you?

  • http://danchamb.com.br/Home/ Lz – Cphfinest3

Iverson is showing that he’s so much more than a talented chucker. What ever we call it retool or start over, I think Detroit should do it. As much as I like them, there is not the slightest chance that they get by Cavs or Celts. As i said keep Stuckey, Prince, and Maxiell and have a yard-sale with the rest of them. Dumars could build them into a contender in less than 2 seasons probably.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

But anyway, i’m done debating the Pistons and what I think they can/cannot accomplish this year. Right now, the evidence is stacked against me, but I know what they can accomplish. As I stated, AI and Sheed are gone after the year. So now everyone wants them to go ahead and make moves now?

Darks; Hey it’s not like I’m complaining, I was working in SP 9½ months last year, and it’s and awesome place, absolutely loved it. So I’m really excited with this new opportunity. But just thinking ahead, would like to see the world while I’m still young. Sorry Eboy but the Lakers played 8 players last night up against the spurs whole squad. No Sasha, no Jordan and no walton off a back to back and they could only win by one point having been sitting at home for 3 games waiting on the lakers. The Spurs are in trouble if they see the lakers in the playoffs buddy.

  • http://www.lkz.ch/basket Darksaber

LZ: far as i’ve read, it’s not the perfect place to show a certain level of prosperity for fear of you know…. losing it! But the weather, the people, the food, i’d love to check brazil out (maybe not Sao P. though :-)

  • http://danchamb.com.br/Home/ Lz – Cphfinest3

TAD; I’m with you on Orlando, they are not there yet. Their go-to guy has limited moves and is an awfull freethrow shooter, whereas the rest of the team is mostly spot up shooters. Although I reckon Hedo is a handfull and Dwight anchors the D well, it won’t be enough to win a 7 game series aganist any of the other top teams.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

If there is one thing I don’t like about CP3 it’s that he is a dirty player. He’s prolly one of the most down to earth, caring guys in the L, but on the court he will NEVER hesitate to deliver a low blow (pun intended). Grabbing, pulling, hooking, anything goes. He’s still the definition of what a pg should be though.

  • Orion

They should have handled the lakers pretty easy of that back to back with limited players out there. No case can be made for them being the best team in the west. As Greg Pop said himself they are just not in the same league with the Lakers right now. He realizes that it should have even been that close.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Mason almost responded with a “Sam C” step of his own after wetting the shot+ 1 from the corner. That guy is f*cking ICE WATER. This Spurs team has the little bit of ‘magic” we seemed to lack in recent years, thanks in large part to Mason and George Hill. And how much like Kobe is it to use someone else’s move like that? Dude has no swag of his own. But his game last night WAS phenomenal, the better “team” won out though. And I do recognize the fact that the Lakers were missing some important role players.

  • http://myspace.com/bodiebarnett jbn74sb

    1) I loved Kobe’s big ball dance.
    2) I don’t mind the loss – the second night of a road back to back is always hard, even more so when you’re missing multiple rotation guys.
    3) It’s just too bad the refs ruined an otherwise great game with a number of horrendous calls and no-calls.
    4) It’s still 85 degrees here. Suckers. Except for you eboy, as I’m sure it’s nice there too. Even though you are still a sucker.
    5) I’m going to the UCLA-Arizona game tonight and plan on harassing Budinger.

Manu from just across half court after going behind his back was MURDER. Manu was in rare form last night. When he’s got it going he’s a top 5 SG in the world, and I don’t know if there is anyone with more fire and instinct.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

You’ve got to play the games with what you got, ciolkstar. If the Lakers would ahve pulled it out, all we would have heard about today was how clutch Josh Powell was for making two wide open jump shots and how the “greatness” of the team and its players from 1-15 makes any situation manageable. Shut the fu*k up with that crybaby bullsh*t.

  • http://myspace.com/bodiebarnett jbn74sb

Jonesy – On the KCAL feed, they cut away from Kobe as soon as he started the dance, and didn’t show it on any of the highlights, which made it even funnier. The call on Fisher against Mason was a good one. They should have called a foul on Bynum on Duncan’s running hook. But, Ginobli pushed the sh-t out of Ariza before getting fouled on a 3 at the end of the 3rd, the shot before his 40 footer. And the travel call on Ariza was just horrendous. Regardless, it was a great game, and an acceptable loss, despite the officiating.

    Ciolk
YOu know what? You made an outstanding point about Kobe stealing the big balls dance.
That was a ridiculous moment of swaggerjacking that clearly outlines what so many people dislike about Kobe.
What does Kobe do that is just his? He stole so many moves and mannerisms from MJ, I remember when he was stealing streetball moves to use in the All-Star game and now he’s stealing Sam Cassell’s celebrations. This dude is the most skilled basketball player of his generation, but something is wrong with him.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Orlando is dangerous as hell when they are making 3s. Thats for sure. The only problem is that Hedo and Rashard, to a lesser extent, are streak shooters, who can go “cold” as easily as they get “hot”. I’m constantly in awe of CP3 in terms of basketball, but I’m not a fan, per se.

TAD: I watched alot of ACC hoops when Paul was at Wake and I just thought he was classless, still do to an extent. He gets away with alot of dirtyness, just becuase he’s usually smaller than the guy he’s pulling some sh!t on. To me, punching another player in the nuts, during a game, is borderline unforgiveable. All that said, he’s been unreal for the last two seasons. And could wind up looking up at only Magic (and possibly Stockton) in the greatest PG all time deabte. But my “fandom” lies elsewhere…

As great as Paul is, before comparing him with Magic and Stock, one should not forget that it is far easier for quick guards to dominate after they banned handchecking. Nash double MVP’s, Tony Parker Finals MVP, Devin Harris averaging +24, Chris Paul (to a lesser extent Parker) being unguardable wouldn’t have happened before they made the change in rules. “Kobe’s an asshole/primafdonna/fake Jordan” arguments are fine by me. Its just that people get stuck on the whole “Colorado” episode and claim to “know” things they don’t. Its just as likely that this chick tried to play Kobe for some money as itis that he forced himslef on her. We don’t know for sure. Bringning up off-court “persona” is one thing. Constantly referring to one event, the details of which are still largely unclear, is pointless, and again IRRELEVANT.

Without this intensity BBall will never be able to catch football (soccer) as the world’s no. 1 sport. Fine……………..Can I now rub it in to the faces of all of you (yes, you know who you are) who were giving Beasley hell at the start of the season for being less than fantastic. Dude’s numbers are still low due to the early season minutes experiments, but he is solidly averaging 20 and 7, off the bench mind you, over the last 2 weeks. He will be a monster…..just needs the playing time.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Yeah, I don’t condone saying Kobe r*ped that girl. I don’t like the man, but I’m not willing to call him a r*pist based on what we heard about that incident.
However, I’m not just talking about Kobe stealing moves. Everybody does that, and to an extent, everybody steals some mannerisms. MJ made the fist pump after big plays into something everybody in basketball does. We all know that got that from Mike, and it’s not a big deal.
But, Kobe jacked little stuff. The way Mike walked to the huddle, the way he told his team to calm down by pushing his palms towards the floor and sticking his lower lip out. Don’t even mention how Kobe started rocking one hoop earring!
Who rocks one hoop earring besides MJ, his boy toy Ahmad Rashad and Kobe? No self respecting black man does that.
Kobe is biter. He is the greatest biter of all time, and one of the greatest basketball technicians of all time, but he is still a biter.

Solution to the Clippers woes: Dunleavy stay as G.M. and hire a coach who can play a running style of ball, play to the players strengths and whatever you do, don’t let the only player who wanted to join the Clippers (Baron) leave because you’re so f*cking inept at playing to your strengths.

Anyway, I also wanted to agree with that guy who said that the Thunder have a good nucleus with Westbrook, Durant and Green. However, I would actually try to move Green for an active big man, and a shooting two guard. They need more shooters, and Collison and Wilcox aren’t getting hte job done in the interior. Actually, I would try to put together a package of Green, Wilcox and Wilkins for a good big and a decent two guard.

People always talk about the defense in the Golden Age of the NBA, but when I watch old games I see a lot of open shots. And open layups. Now, I see hard fouls, but I see a lot of cats getting buckets they would not get in today’s NBA.

Nah….I just hate him for being a crybaby bi*ch, plus he’s played on two of the Giants rivals, so that’s where the real hate comes from. Although I have no gripes with KG and his choice of ear baubbles.

But you have to agree the intensity was higher back then, sometimes when I watch NBA these days, the majority (slight overstatement) of the players seem like their thinking about what new rims to get for their Hummer rather than winning the game. That wasn’t the case back then, where players came to work not only to get a check but also to win.

I disagree. When I watch games, I’m impressed with the fact that most players seem to want to win. I guess I can appreciate how much of a grind it must be to play basketball all the time. Sure, I love ball and it’s fun to play, but it has to be taxing on the body and mind to do that for 82 games. Just like regular people, NBA players have bad days at the office, days when they are mailing it in, but for the most part I’m impressed with the intensity level of players.
Plus, sometimes I think people underestimate how much energy and effort it takes to do the things that NBA players make look easy. Like wrong footed layups at full speed.

Thing is, you don’t really remember the bums from back in the day. They were there. Joe Wolf and company existed. Joe Carrol, Darryl Dawkins, and many more. Lots of players were taking it easy and earning big money. The problem is that as the wealth gap has grown between players and fans, fans have become less tolerant of what they consider slacking. The changing racial dynamics and hip-hop infusion don’t help either.
I honestly do not believe NBA players are more lazy today. I just think people care more about it. Just like I don’t think more athletes commit crimes today, I just think more attention is given to their screwups.

But still I don’t like the tendencies of our beloved sport.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Free agency wasn’t around for quite some time in NBA. It took a while before players could leave teams, and even when that first began, owners were still colluding. But, players still whined about stats and looked for trades. Mark Aquirre, Adrian Dantley and Pistol Pete were examples. I’m sure if I searched I could find more.
Players have always been worried about their stats and salaries. You are viewing the past through the nostalgic eyes of sportwriters who are unhappy. The truth is that the NBA hasn’t changed as much as people would have you believe.

my bad allen- but curry has never done anything at all is why I am saying that- Dawkins and curry were virtually even regular season wise but Dawkins was a difference maker in the playoffs (kind of) and curry has never even been there. And Dawkins was not a terrible defensive player. I mean your right he was a vast underachiever but to say he is Eddy Curry is a little messed up. But regular season numbers (rebounds and points) are comparable but thats about it

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    NBK
I can’t really say how similar they were or weren’t because I didn’t watch that many of Dawkins’ games. I know that he had a rep for being a bit of space cadet and coasting, like Curry. From what I can gather from the stats, Curry was a the better offensive player, they were about even at rebounding with a slight edge to Dawkins and DAwkins was much better on defense. However, Dawkins was also more foul prone. I still think Dawkins is a fair example of the type of player LZ mentioned.

Dawkins clearly turned things up in the playoffs, but since Curry has never been to the playoffs, I don’t know what he would have done.

I mean like a scoring guard off the bench, or a lock down defender, anything a guy off the bench that gives 20 solid minutes. Affalo plays what 17 minutes a game and gives Detroit basically nothing? Kwame Brown and Arron Affalo are gettin just about the same amount of run on the floor, while Kwame is in no way a good first big man off the bench (which is why he is 3rd off for detroit) affalo is in a similar situation but is the first guard to come in. JUST A SIDE NOTE Stuckey is not even playing 30 minutes a game and is the most efficient gaurd on the Pistons. WTF is Curry doing?

Yesterday you were defending Rip, saying he does so many things besides shoot midrage js and today you’re calling for him to get benched or traded and calling him out for a perceived lack of effort/intensity. You may have just been venting. I understand your a loyal fan, and RIP has been good for Detroit over the years, but if you say you like the fact the just got extended like 6 years, then I’ll be speechless. I still think Rip should be coming off the bench, and amazingly Stuckey clearly looks like Detroit’s best player.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

My concern is, how is Detroit getting the most out of their gaurds when one is playing out of position, and is not getting the offense he would get if say he ran with the second unit. Hamilton is basically ineffective with both Stuckey and Iverson because he does not get the shots he would in a normal offense. IMO it just seems like Detroit is missing out on so much with 3 gaurds in, it is pointless to me to put your team in a situation where two players are inferior to their counterpart at the position they are playing every single game.

Rip got a 3-year extension, with a player or team option for the last year.
    NBK
I don’t think the small lineup should be Detroit’s main lineup, but I think it’s good in spurts. Also, I think Curry has a lot of players who are used to playing big minutes and he’s trying to manage that while also getting his young players time.
Affalo is one of those young players, and I actually like his game. I think he needs to be more aggressive as a slasher instead of spotting up so much, but he’s already a very good defender and fairly good rebounder. He also provides great energy whenever he plays. Bynum, doesn’t get much tick, but that’s because there are four guards in front of him. I think the real area where they might need to get more is small forward because I’m concerned about wear and tear on Prince with him playing out of position so often. But, there are only so many minutes to go around and Detroit is an incredible deep team.
Look, they made a big roster change and they are dealing with a rookie coach. and they are 22-15. They aren’t playing great, but the potential is obviously there.

Oh i am not hating on detroits skill level they can obviously be an elite team but I just do not see how they are getting the most out of what they have while using all their weapons at once. Why not spread it for the whole 48 minutes rather then lumping them together.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

team chemistry maybe? Larry Brown had a lot of guards when he was in New York and he had a different rotation every game. And the team failed

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

Like i said bet have not been really paying attention to what my fingers hit first i am on the phone at work. If my putting the a first is really bothering you then maybe you are focusing on too much irrelovence.

no but its pretty fun. Do your ‘work’ and stop conversating here if this is that big of a distraction.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

I did not say have a different rotation every game, I said spread the game out, don’t clump all your guards together. If there is a better way I want to read it but I can’t think of one.

Ciol: Yeah, venting. Everything I said about Rip yesterday still stands. He does all of these things. While in Detroit for the last six seasons, Rip has missed a total of 29 games. That’s it. I’ve seen him play a ton and know that he gives his all on the floor and while not the best defensive player, he is willing to guard the other teams best player and even has asked for the assignment. My point is that ever since Billups got traded, he has struggled. I understood that getting acclimated to playing with AI factored into this, but he still gave full effort. But lately, especially with the media hounding him about possibly going to the bench and the severity of his injury, he seems to have gone into a shell and started sulking. Now, it may just be that he is struggling with that injury and it is causing him to not go 100%. If that is the case, then yes, bench him. If the first thing is the case to where he is sulking and that is why he isn’t giving full effort, then explore trading him. No reason to keep someone who isn’t happy.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

yeah but it could just be that i want something fun to do. And NBK i didnt mean the Knicks comment in a negative way, i am just saying it was tried in the past it failed.

Russ made me start coughing from laughing. And ciol: Stuckey HAS been our best player. Is he the best player on the team? No, but he has played the best. He is quickly becoming the best player period, though.

And co-sign Allen: Arron Afflalo is pretty good. The man is like a young Lindsey Hunter on defense.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

This is not a distraction from my work at all BET, my work is a distraction from this – you need to work on your associational skills…And Afflalo is not good enough to be a Lindsey Hunter in the Postseason yet.. why would you waste your regular season on a rotation that won’t at all stick during the playoffs? THere is no way starting RIP and AI together is better then one of them coming off the bench IMO, thats all i am trying to say.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Keeps what going NBK? The Pistons had literally a handful of games of trying the small-ball lineup before Rip got injured. He has been back two games. In those two games, the Pistons had the lead in both of 7 and 5 points with about 3 minutes left. They went cold and couldn’t make a shot. In both games, the Pistons were playing a traditional lineup and lost. The small-ball lineup was not to blame. Now, they probably should have been beating both Charlotte and Indiana convincingly and it shouldn’t even have come to that. Again, i’m not against them sending either AI or Rip to the bench, but right now Curry is the one to blame.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

Yeah keeps it going, like has not stopped doing that stupid lineup after the first game. Do you think maybe they are struggling at the end of games because they are wasting all their guards energy playing them together? Thats my point about spreading the game out, lately with their three-guard lineup they have only played 44 minute games and lost to two subpar teams.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

And it seems like we generally agree on what detroit should do with their lineup tad except your open to seeing if it works and i am already convinced it doesnt and wont.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Ragardless, if Jason Maxiell gets anymore DNP-CD’s in the near future, i’ll be hopping a plane to Detroit and finding Curry’s address.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Last night Rip was on the bench when they lost.
You can bet he won’t be cool with that happening again.
Look, it’s a tough team to coach, and Curry is a rookie head coach. He’s making mistakes, and that’s kind of what you have to deal with unless the Pistons wanted to keep Flip Saunders.

NBK’s spelling is really bad, in general.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

That is baffling to me that Maxiell is playing less then Kwame. Dude I don’t think Michael Curry was a smart coaching choice by Dumars, he just does not seem to have the testicular fortitude to take control of his team and do whats best. He is keeping the loud allstar type players happy and is keeping the quiet role players on the bench unproductive

  • Mo

I understand people hating CP but saying he’s a dirty player is just false. He doesn’t stick his foot under other players feet or kick them in the back (ala Bruce Bowen). That’s the kind of things “dirty” players do. Yes, he delivered that low blow to Julius Hodge (in college) but word had it that Hodge was also doing something to Paul that I guess no one caught. But that’s ok because it hasn’t stopped Paul from being a great player. But all great players have haters. If you don’t have haters then you must not be doing something right. What is it that Katt Williams say about haters? If you have 20 then you need to find a way to get 40. LMAO! Where is that loser Julius Hodge? If you hate CP3 for doing that to Hodge you must really hate the guy that shot Julius Hodge then too right? Stop hating so hard.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

If you don’t like Chris Paul, you don’t like life.

  • Mo

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

    what even provoked that?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I guess I can understand the CP3 hate since I loathe Bean so much. They’re both incredibly talented…..both have retarded commercials (yes I’m looking at you Paul’s Pits)both have an edge about them…..both have terrible on and off court demeanors…..both have had horrible press conferences to apologize to their wives after charges of infedelity….oh wait…those only applies to one of them…..scratch that.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Maxiell is cool, but he is liability on defense sometimes, and other than energy he doesn’t bring much on offense. I like him, but I can understand why Curry might go with McDyess over him.
The Pistons have an incredible deep team. Flip Saunders screwed up the rotation, I’m not surprised a rookie coach is doing the same. Hell, Larry Brown would barely let Okur get off the bench. I think fans are a little too hard on Curry, he’s only coached 37 games. and he’s one 22 of them.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    Eboy just can’t help himself.
Wade doesn’t do press conferences, he just bangs movie stars and tells people to mind their own business.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

I love NC State and Julius Hodge. I saw the game, Hodge was not doing anything other than playing basketball and leading the team. Hodge had a great college career. However, judging Chris Paul on that play is just retarded. I think it was a dirty play but it does not make Chris a dirty player.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

But allen does how does that justify playing Kwame Brown over Maxiell

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

In personality standpoint Wade>>>Kobe. In a game of basketball Kobe>Wade.

  • Mo

If it were me and Hodge tried to twist my injured wrist, I might have punched Hodge in the mouth. Forget the balls. Straight for his grill. BAM!

“If the officials are calling the game by the rule book, none of this happens last night. Hodge’s cheap shot of trying to reinjure Chris Paul’s wrist needs to be addressed. Isn’t Hodge supposed to be better than that, or is he just mad that Chris Paul is a better player? And that rolling around on the floor theatrics only to come back and play the rest of the game…that’s why this is such a big deal.”

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Allen: I was all for the Curry hire and I still back him. I think he’ll be a great coach. I’m still going to be his harshest critic at times as well.

  • Mo

If you guys would rather exhaust all this energy hating Chris Paul rather than enjoying what’s becoming greatness at the point guard position, have fun. Knock yourselves out. Peace.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    NBK
Kwame is a very solid low post defender. Maybe Curry thought size was important and thought the team needed is defense against Indiana. Maybe he thought that since the Pacers are small, Kwame would give them an advantage on the glass, I don’t know.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

“I might have punched Hodge in the mouth” Mo, their is a reason you dont play ball, get anger mangement. Its called a foul, if your a star like Chris it happens a lot to you. Hodge IS NOT a dirty player, Chris IS NOT a dirty player. Chris just had a dirty play and Hodge had a foul. Simple as that.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    Mo is Paul’s agent.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Also Allen: I understand Curry’s maybe wanting to play one big more than another if the matchups dictate it, but no playing time at all is kind of ridiculous. It isn’t the first game either. All I know is that we re-signed Maxiell to a 4 year, $24 mil deal. That doesn’t sound like someone they thought would be sitting much.

Great game in SA last night. Best game this season for the spurs. However!…they aren’t a great scoring team and will lose to this lakers team in a series. The lakers played like the lakers and the spurs were just on fire last night. Great game though and a tough loss for the lakers. Just with the expressions on Kobe’s face through out the game just tells how much he HATES losing to the spurs.

punching someone in the face is about 100000X motre respectable than punching someone in the nether region. I didnt say paul isd a “dirty player”, but rather that he gets away with a lot of dirtyness on the court. He’s smart about it, and because he’s smaller than the avergae NBA player much of it goes unnoticed. Any time he’s in a collison he’ll throw a little extra elbow/shoulder/fist at the end. That chip on his shoulder is definitely part of what makes him great, but I’m just not a big fan. Thats not to say I don’t respect or appreciate his game.
