The Post Up: Hornets Sting Lakers

And the Bobcats shock those Celtics.

by Holly MacKenzie

Important: This edition of the Post Up is dedicated to our very own, BETCATS.

It looks like his unwavering support of his guys and of the trade that brought Raja Bell and Boris Diaw to his team has paid off. Last night the Charlotte Bobcats did the improbable and took down the Celtics in overtime.

Okay, now that we’ve got that out of the way, wow. Crazy game that was. You all see MJ sitting with the team, basically coaching the team and of course, celebrating with them afterwards? That was fun.

What’s funny? It doesn’t matter how many photos I see of MJ looking dazed and confused after drinking his face off, when he’s got his suit on and he’s sitting courtside, he’s class to me.

Only MJ.

That Lakers/Hornets game was all that I had expected and more. Only problem is, my guys lost. Boo to that. Yay to the duel between Chris Paul/David West and Kobe Bryant. For stretches in the third Chris and Kobe were going back and forth and it was a beautiful thing to see.

That buzzer-beater from near half to close out the first half was also a thing of beauty.

If anyone was wondering, simply the sight of Jack Black (who was sitting courtside again at STAPLES, last night), makes me smile. Love actors who have that effect on you.

I’m still struggling with the fact that Derek Fisher attempted 13 three-pointers.

D.J. Augustin for Major!GP and Chris Webber are crazy. Undeniably, ridiculously and entirely crazy.

I like them, though.

Things I don’t like: Paul Pierce being stupid and shoving DJ Augustin when he loses the ball out of bounds. Just because you turn the ball over, leave the rookie alone. Particularly, the rookie who was C-L-U-T-C-H in overtime and scored 11 points in the extra period.

Another thing I did like: Byron Scott’s suit/tie combo last night. The League was full of classy looking ex-players last night.

Another thing I didn’t like: LO’s hyperextended knee. With Farmar and Walton already out and VladRad being true his space cadet moniker and showing up every three games or so, I really don’t want to lose Lamar.

32 and 15 for Chris Paul. 40 for David West. Yup. Those Hornets will be just fine as the season goes on. Just taking a little longer than we’d like for them to find their stride.

Now, for the games I didn’t recap. Oklahoma City fans, I’m sorry I didn’t get to see your guys snag their fifth win of the season, this time over the Knicks, defeating them 107-99. The box tells me that Durant had 27 points and 12 rebounds (yeah, fantasy team!), and Jeff Green also dropped in 27 on the night while rookie Russell Westbrook continues to shine and be a diamond in the rough that is OKC, scoring 22 points, grabbing 6 boards and dishing 9 assists. Love that kid. For the Knicks in the loss, Al Harrington scored 21 points and Duhon added 18 while David Lee was solid as always, scoring 14 points to go with 13 rebounds.

I did see the end of the Memphis/Minny game and I was pulling for Memphis hard. I can’t help but love this team, even if they did lose to Minnesota 94-87 OJ, Rudy, Marc, Conley. They are in town this Friday and I’m fired up for it. Anyway, while they trailed late, they came back on a lay up from Gasol, but were unable to get the stops that they needed and a big three from Randy Foye did them in. Al Jefferson had 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Wolves while Foye finished with 23 and Bassy dropped off 9 assists to go with his 10 points. OJ led the Grizzlies with 20 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists while Hakkim Warrick put together another strong performance off of the bench, with 22 points and Marc Gasol added 13 points.

The Bulls managed to hang on to defeat the Kings, 99-94 last night, thanks to Ben Gordon’s 24-point performance. Kevin Martin continued to have the hot hand, scoring 29 points for Sacramento, while Brad Miller had 18 points and 12 rebounds in the loss as the Bulls outrebounded Sacramento 42-35 and won despite shooting only 38% as compared to 50% shooting from the Kings. Derrick Rose added 16 points and 8 assists for Chi and Drew Gooden had 18 points off of the bench.

Orlando 89 Washington 80

While the Wizards came into this one still happy over a well-earned victory against the Cavaliers, the Magic returned home following an unexpected loss to the Raptors and were not about to drop another game. Thanks to a strong defensive effort in the second quarter (and an even worse offensive performance by the Wizards), the Magic were able to go up big and had a lead just large enough to escape a strong second half push from the Wiz, led by Caron Butler who scored 21 points in the third quarter. Washington was outscored 16-6 in the second quarter as the Magic took a 46-30 halftime lead. The Magic were unable to prevent Washington from cutting into their lead and in the opening minutes of the final quarter, the Wizards got to within three before Orlando began to pull away and Washington could not keep up. Dwight Howard led Orlando with 15 points and 16 rebounds while Hedo Turkoglu had 22 points and 7 assists and Jameer Nelson added 14. Caron finished with 29 for Washington as Antawn Jamison was the only other Wizard to reach double figures with 13 points and 9 rebounds.

Philadelphia 104 Houston 96

Thanks to a season-high 28 from Andre Igoudala, the  Sixers were able to take down the Rockets, 104-96 in Philly last night. With the Rockets struggling on the road as of late, they were unable to sustain their effort for a full 48 minutes and suffered a third quarter collapse that did them in. managing only 16 points in the third (while Philly dropped in 26), While the Rockets would come back in the fourth to cut the lead to six, they had no answer for Igoudala and ended up losing their third straight. Louis Williams and Marreese Speights each scored 15. Luis Scola led Houston with 18 points and 17 rebounds and Yao Ming, Von Wafer and TMac each scored 14 in the loss.

Dallas 107 LA Clippers 104

Another huge game from Clippers rookie Eric Gordon. Unfortunately, the result was the same as his last 30+ point performance; a loss for the Clippers. Last night, it was at the hands of the Mavericks who took the 107-104 victory, despite Gordon’s 32 points. Just as Gordon missed the potential game winner against Detroit on Sunday, his lay up attempt was blocked with 48 seconds remaining while Dirk responded on the other end with a jumper to give the Mavs the lead for good. Dirk finished with 34 points while Josh Howard scored 22 and Jason Kidd added 10 rebounds and 8 assists. Gordon’s final line was 32 points and 6 assists as Al Thornton scored 25 points and Mardy Collins added 17.

Charlotte 114 Boston 106 OT

Yeah, you read correctly. I didn’t mix up the teams and the scores, the Bobcats defeated the scrambling Celtics. I know Boston has been all over the map, but I didn’t see this one coming. While Charlotte led by seven at the end of one, the Celtics had tied the game at the end of three then went ahead by seven before watching helplessly as the Bobcats came back. A turnaround J from PP tied the game to force an overtime with 3.4 seconds left after Felton missed a free throw. In the extra period, the Celtics fell apart while DJ Augustin soaked it all in, scoring 11 of his 20 points in the five minutes and hitting some clutch free throws down the stretch, while also taking a shove from Pierce after forcing a turnover. Raymond Felton led the Cats with 25 points and 8 assists while Augustin added 5 assists to his 20-point performance off of the bench. Gerald Wallace scored 23 points and Emeka Okafor added 13 points, 17 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Pierce led the Celtics with 28 points as Kevin Garnett had 14 points and 13 rebounds but shot only 7-18. Ray Allen scored 20 and Rajon Rondo struggled with 9 turnovers to go with his 16 points.

New Orleans 116 LA Lakers 105

This one hurts. Especially so, since the Celtics lost tonight and we could further establish ourselves as the best not only in the West, but in the entire league. Frustrating since the Lakers were there, and took control in a third quarter that was brilliant basketball. While New Orleans led early, a long three from Kobe to end the half to cut the Hornets lead down to five heading into the break. In the third, the Hornets and Lakers traded baskets, with Chris Paul and Kobe Bryant putting on an offensive show and the Lakers taking control heading into the fourth, up three, 92-89. As hot as the Lakers were in the third, they were equally as cold in the fourth. While Kobe couldn’t miss in the third, he went 1-6 in the final quarter and the Lakers missed a barrage of three-pointers while the Hornets were calm under pressure, ran their offense through and fed David West for easy buckets then allowed Chris Paul to altnerate creating for others and carving up the Lakers as he scored himself. CP3 finished with 32 points and 15 assists while David West poured in 40, tying his career-high. Kobe had 39 points and 7 assists for the Lakers as Fisher finished with 19 points in the loss.

Congrats to BET. Hopefully Holly’s dedication of this Post Up will be enough to satisfy him, ’cause I’m expecting an eruption of the Mt. Saint Helen’s variety once he come’s around today.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Oh, and the Celts commercial on ESPN with Ray, KG and Paul makes me laugh every time. Why? When they say their nickname ideas and Ray says “Ménage à trois, it’s French”, that sh*t’s funny as fu*k, coming out of his mouth.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I’m almost positve Lang will have no choice but to put Cleveland at the top of the Dirty 30 next week once the Cavs beat the Celts on Friday.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Hopefully LO isn’t down for too long. That would suck.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

    ^co-sign Eboy.
If he doesnt have 50+ comments by himself, I’ll be bitterly disappointed in him, although, school is back apparently.
    The Rockets were terrible.
Maybe not having Artest or Battier and a fu*cked up tmac helped Iggy somewhat. Hopefully he continues to play well though.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

    *co-sign particularly his first comment.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

They played a good game, Hursty, and the Celts were flat again. I think that Paul, KG and Ray must have had flashbacks to 1997 with Michael so close to the court and that may have been the tipping point in the Cats favor. Raymond and DJ ran the game particulary well, especially when the game went to OT.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    Ok, a few things:
    1) I’m glad Speights and Lou Williams are finally getting burn for the Sixers.
    2) The Rockets are struggling. Where are all those Houston fans now?
    3) David West scored 40 points. Yeah, he’s terrible.
    4) Maybe the C’s do need to start worrying a little.
    5) DJ Augustin is good. So is Russell Westbrook.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

I know his team sucks but I’m really impressed with Kevin Durant this season but not happy he beat my Knicks. On the other hand I’m glad to see the celtics lose, maybe they’ll shut the f*ck up and play ball instead of talking sh*t all the time.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Co-sign Shia. On both things. The Thunder really do have a nice nucleus with Green, Westbrook, and Durant. If they add Blake Griffin, look out.

  • matt the jazz fan

    6) the suns could sure use gerald wallace

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Um, the Suns have Barnes and Grant Hill. I think their SF forward spot is pretty set. What they could really use is Mike D’Antoni.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Westbrook is a lot better than I thought he would be that’s for damn sure.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Who are you telling? Westbrook did not impress me much at all while in college. I’m not sure if he was just held back because they also had Collison teamed up with him, but I definitely was scrathcing my head when he was drafted #4. I guess I shouldn’t quit my day job.

  • http://www.slamonline.com mat smith

Raja is really underated, only Walter Ray has made more 3s in the last 3 seasons, and Raja is a great defender, and Steve Nash likes him.

maybe it’s a gut reaction to him being similar to matrix and matrix being so central to the suns 7s.o.l. success.

Watching the Knicks fall behind by 20 to the Team That Shall Not Be Named was fun last night. And is it just me, or does Damien Wilkins look more and more like Anthony Mason every day? “Gerald, you are NOT the father.”

  • http://www.mybleedingfingertips.blogspot.com/ Myles Brown

Ill take a win any way we can get it, but theyre still games I expected them to win. The schedule is getting a lot lighter now, but will pick back up towards the end of the month with home games against Miami, N.O. and the Lakeshow. They should still run OKC, Milwaukee and Chicago outta the building though.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

    Hey!

  • http://www.mybleedingfingertips.blogspot.com/ Myles Brown

And its okay that the Celtics lost to the Cats cause theyre the Champs right? So this slide theyve been on since they lost to LA wont matter come April cause theyll still have that vital home court advantage right? The champ automatically gets that right? Benefit of the doubt and home court advantage throughout the playoffs? Then why is everyone else playing so hard?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

i am back in the building like a home invander. And Nguyen Van Coc turned out to be a North Vietnamese Flying Ace. Just for all yall that care like a care bear

@ Tad: The Houston fans are still here (well…those of us that haven’t jumped off the bandwagon yet), but the Rockets are a mess right now. Not only because of how they are playing (we have seen this before) but now it’s like they don’t believe in themselves anymore. Even when they were in the midst of the Franchise-Mobley Era, winning between 20 and 45 games and missing the playoffs, they still believed they could go out and compete with anyone. Maybe that’s the problem…maybe they compete harder when they are the underdogs. I don’t know, but its frustrating. Waiting until all-star break to give my official State of the Team Review…

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

Hornets needed that win badly. Let’s get consistent and attack early, boys.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

I want everyone who thinks David West earns his 40point games that did not watch the game last night to check out either David West’s shots chart or read the play by play. Dude did not ATTEMPT a layup until about 9:30 left in the 3rd quarter. He attempted all jump shots except 2 layups, a dunk, and a missed layup. I don’t remember off the top of my head but I think every one of his field goals except 2 came from assists. If his 40 point performance last night does not show how reliant he is on his teammates and his jumpshot then all the david west fan’s will never figure it out.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Tad there were only like 2 or 3 of us to begin with…..I’m waiting for Deke to get comfortable and Battier to come back. The defense has been terrible and that’s mainly due to Battier being out, who’s of course a very good defender, but also get everyone else in place. Unfortunately, I think the Tmac situation may go one for the rest of the month.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

The point is scoring the basket, no? Who the hell cares HOW he did it? He could’ve have scored 40 off of 13 bombs from halfcourt and a tech FT. It is still 40 and his team still won.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

And no, i’ll never figure it out, if you were wondering. I’m stubborn like that. It’s one of my best qualities.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Or worst, depending on who you may be asking.
And RV: I thought Artest was the better defender? Oh, and there were a lot more than 2 or 3 Rockets fans when they signed Ron Ron. Them fools were coming out the woodwork.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

Sorry Tad I am not saying David West is not a good player, he is really good, I am still stuck on people saying David West was top 5 PF’s in the L. I just want everyone too see where his numbers really come from. He can shoot the hell out of the ball but he is a PF in the NBA with limited athletic ability and height (long arms though) he better be good at shooting a midrange jump shot or else he wont even see the floor. The fact that CP gets him soo many open looks makes his boxscores look like he dominates games when really all he is doing is hitting jumpers. For a PF to be so reliant on his jump shot makes his boxscore “fool’s gold”

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Dirk is a PF that doesn’t score in the paint regulary. Must be a fool. KG scores the majority of his points outside of the paint, also a fool? Would either of those guys be considered top 5 at the PF? Yes. NBK, I feel for you sometimes, but you’ve got to be thourough in your arguments before you get lined up for comment kamikaze.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I’ll take 40 points worth of “fools gold”. Word.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

And for the sake of argument: I completely and utterly understand that CP3 makes ALL of his teammates better. Especially: West, Chandler, Peja, Armstrong, Peterson, Bowen, Butler, Wright, Brown, Daniels, Marks, and Ely. The only he doesn’t improve is Posey, because his rings make him have superpowers and he can “hold” KB to 30 points.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

talk about selective reading- Do Dirk Nowitzki and Kevin Garnett have Chris Paul getting them open looks? Does David West outrebound either of those two? Although Dirk and KG get the majority of their points from outside the paint they have proven they can score without an elite PG playing with them, and both players turn the ball over way less then David West.

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

Chandler needs to stop making rookie fouls and calm the hell down while Peja needs to step the hell up.

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

    I should say “Oden fouls”.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Hey NBK, if you have a Facebook account, can you start a club called “David West is overrated and hates kittens!”? That would be super. Thanks!

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

    will do

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    I fully expect an invite.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

    there you go tad

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

What does “getting them open looks” have to do with “where” they score the ball. Dirk and KG are not prototypical post players, so they won’t be like Karl Malone or Moses Malone, banging their way to 40 from the post, and sure good players are always made that much better by another great teammate, but to say West’s 40 is fools gold is like saying 35 from Ray Allen off 10 threes and 5 free throws is fake platinum.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

No because David West does not do the things you look for in a PF, he is an average rebounder not a very good defender, and totally reliant on someone else to get him shots. I am not saying he is a bad player, he is still really good I am just saying he is not a top tier PF

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

Like I said Eboy check out the play by play recap of yesterdays games you can count misses as well as makes and it will show the discrepency between jump shots and layups/post scoring opps. When your a “top notch” pf you should not really on your jump shot for the majority of your points especially if your not grabbing boards and blocking shots.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Where was someone arguing that he was a top-tier PF or top 5 PF today? You really hold onto past arguments, don’t you? Let it go…..

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

    Why bother arguing eboy?

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

I just wanted to say my piece I am totally done on the topic. Had to get that out there though because last nights game so greatly outlined what I have been trying to say for months.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    NBK
Dirk plays with Jason Kidd and used to play with Steve Nash. Are you saying Chris Paul is better at getting players shots than those two players?
David is a jump shooting power forward. Guess who else was a jump shooting power forward? Karl Malone.
David West is reliant on his jumper because he can make it. He needs to improve as a defender and rebounder, but I think he could average 18 to 20 points per game even if he didn’t play with Chris Paul.
    Top 5 Power Forwards
    Duncan
    KG
    Dirk
    Pick Em
    Pick em

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Well, I bet there’s plenty of starting PF’s in the league, that would kill for an opportunity to sniff 40 off fools gold ability.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

Eric Gordon might end up averaging 20 for the year 2009

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

He should be called David East because he can’t go left.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

Like I said he is good but he is not top 5. Jason Kidd and Steve Nash oddly enough were not with Dirk when he won the MVP allen so there you go with that. Karl Malone could rebound if you have not forgotten and he also played defense never averaged under a steal (his steals did not come from overplaying passing lanes they came from stripping dudes in the paint). I would not have a problem with David Wests game if he did other things well but other then shooting a midrange j (which he is really really good at) he has nothing to his game. There is no way he could average 18-20 w/out CP he has never even averaged 20 w/ him.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

I think it’s dumb to penalize someone’s accomplishments because he plays with great players. What’s wrong with shooting jumpers if you’re wet all the time? Like TAD said, 40 is 40. No, David West is not as good as TD or KG or Dirk. He’s still pretty damn good, though.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

    Pick em 1 : Bosh
    Pick em 2 : STAT

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    NBK
Dirk’s numbers were actually down in his MVP season compared to previous years. However, his team won 67 games. So, there you go with that.
What does Karl Malone’s defense and rebounding have to do with him being a jump shooter on offense? Stick with the damn topic. Lots of power forwards were jump shooters because that’s the easiest way to get buckets when you have a center who hangs out in the paint. Great players like Bob McAdoo have been primarily jump shooters on offense. It’s the perfect weapon when you’re undersized and lack great athletic ability. That’s why Malone developed his jumper as he aged.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

I am not taking away from him because he plays with great players, I am taking away from him because almost everything he does that makes him good is a result of something that great player did. Karl Malone had John Stockton but you don’t hear me calling him overrated do you? Although I would be open to the idea but I did not pay enough attention to the Jazz in my childhood to come up with an opinion about whether or not he was overrated.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Jump shots should not be part of a front court players’ skillset everyone knows that.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

But other great players do other things well allen, David West is not a great player end of story.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    Z
Thanks. I felt like after the first three, it got kind of muddled.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

A jump shot is not something that is so rare it can make a PF one of the best in the L. If your in the NBA you have dominated at one time or another in your life, every NBA player knows how to score, thus all should know how to shoot. It should not be so praised that he hits 15 foot jumpers of chris paul drives. Look at the play by play and count how many baskets david west created for himself.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

I’m so happy I stopped taking Nbk’s posts seriously.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    NBK
How many shots did Karl Malone create for himself? How often is Amare a creator? How about Dwight Howard? When Dirk played with Nash, was he a creator?
Come on man, your logic is flawed. You use what you have at your disposal.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    NBK
Also, David West isn’t great because he’s no a good rebounder and he’s average to below average on defense.
How he scores his points isn’t really a problem. We all know he can post up and make layups because we saw him do it last year in route to torching Tim Duncan in several games. However, the rest of his offensive game is predicated on that jumpshot falling and creating confusion for a defender about how to guard him. This is basic basketball. When you have a dominate trait, you use it to make things easier for your teammates and yourself.
If making open jumpshots was easy, Allen Iverson would have a ring. And Kobe would have another one.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

once again for the umpeenth time David West does ONE THING well, it is not about him creating you obviously can’t read or can’t comprehend what I am saying, I do not have a problem with him not creating for himself IF he did something else well. Dwight leads the league in rebounding, dirk hits threes and rebounds better, amare is quick and takes big men to the rim he doesn’t shoot for 80% of his points. Keep saying my logic is flawed or whatever but it isn’t you just have to get over the fact that you don’t respect anything I say.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I don’t. Oh, and if doing one thing well makes you an All Star, JJ Redick needs to write to David Stern.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com Nbk

Oh yeah allen your basic basketball knowledge taught you that if “OPEN” jump shots were easy Kobe and AI would have more rings? When the Fck do they get enough OPEN jump shots to win a game. This is basic basketball the best players on other teams don’t get OPEN looks. When you have CHRIS PAUL demanding so much attention HE (chris paul) gets his teammates david west in particular open shots. I will reiterate David West is a very good player but he is not top notch PF in the NBA, respect it its just an opinion

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

When you’re a stand still jump shooter there will always be an assist for every J you make. So yeah, saying that every bucket he gets is assisted by Paul doesn’t say much at all. Ah eff it, I’m done with NBK.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

So nbk mister talent scout if david west was playing with a subpar point guard what would his numbers look like? And the really funny thing is you saying this about dwest while saying Shawn Marion is one of the best players in the game even though he’s the most obvious case of needing a point guard to excel in the entire nba.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Well to most Kobe fans, that’s actually accurate in their eyes.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    NBK
    First, you need a hug.
Second, Iverson and Kobe would have rings because they create open jumpshots for teammates. However, as we saw last year in the Finals and in 2001, it’s not that easy to hit open jumpshots no matter how many of them you get. It’s a skill, and West deserves respect for developing that skill since he left college.
But, maybe I should just follow the lead of everybody else and leave you alone.

OJ is Orange Juice Mayonnaise :) CP3 and DAVIIIIID WESTTTTT played bananas b-a-n-a-n-a-s. Kobe as usual is Kobe, but a ridiculous string of injuries on the LAL’s isn’t helping. For the record, I’d like to go on record and say that I believe there is a mass conspiracy that whenever the Celtics are playing bad…The T-Wolves play good. It’s just McHale telling the Celtics to play bad to make them look better. I know it’s ridiculous but who doesn’t like a nice impossible conspiracy!

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

It’s ridiculous to say West can only score one way.
He does one thing exceptionally well, which forces defenses to adjust and then he can do other things.
Everyone here knows that West likes midrange jumpers. We also know that he has a respectable jump hook and can post players up when it’s needed.
I said you’re logic is laughable because it is. David West averages 8 rebounds a game. Amare averages 8 or 9. I’ve already acknowledged that David West needs to improve at rebounding and defense, so does Amare.
Do either of those things mean Amare is not a good scorer? No.
    NBK said:
“I want everyone who thinks David West earns his 40point games that did not watch the game last night to check out either David West’s shots chart or read the play by play…”
Does this mean you think that if score off jumpers and don’t rebound or defend somehow that means you don’t “earn” the points you score? You aren’t making sense. First you said West doesn’t earn his points, now you’re saying that all he does his score on jumpers and that doesn’t count.

  • CYT

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com NBK

He does not earn them in someone else creates the open look for him-not they make the basket for him-as i have stated over and over again david west is very good but he is not a top notch PF. Its not that difficult to understand

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com NBK

I never said anything he does “doesn’t count” i never discounted any of his baskets, this is a case of the entire group of you doing exactly what I did yesterday taking one thing someone said and taking it way further then it was ever meant to go

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com H to the Izzo

Chris Paul actually gave birth to David West…

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    No
What you’ve done is change your argument to make your comments sound better.
The quote I used was one of your earliest, if not your first comment on here. You created an argument that West doesn’t earn his points and when everybody here pointed out to you that it makes no damn sense to penalize a player for hitting open jumpshots, you decided that you wanted to argue whether David West was great or whether he was a Top 5 player. NOBODY else brought up either of those arguments. You created those arguments, and then proceeded to argue against them while proceeding to tell everybody here we were stupid for believing something we never said we believed.
That’s not only arrogant, it’s intellectually dishonest.
The simple truth is that lots of great players have had other great players who create shots for them. David West is part of a long tradition that includes James Worthy, Karl Malone and countless others. Just because David WEst takes the easiest shot available to him does not mean he is incapable of creating his own shots. That’s a logical fallacy.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

Most power forwards and centers don’t create their own shots. It’s not in the job description. Karl Malone scored 95 percent of his points on screen-rolls. Dwight Howard couldn’t SPELL “jump shot” if you spotted him the j-u-m-p. To me, a jump shot is the bucket you “earn” the most—whatever that even means. You could totally flip this argument around and say Chris Paul doesn’t earn half of his assists because they’re just passes to David West for mid-range jumpers. No?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Dude, you said “fools gold”. What exactly is there to understand?

aww, so sweet. Nbk has his period and is throwing a hissy fit under pretence of being a b-ball fan. Thats so sweet. What, no one to talk to in the real world? Thats ok, keep on having your typefest.

Nbk Posted: Jan.7 at 12:38 pm
Sorry Tad I am not saying David West is not a good player, he is really good, I am still stuck on people saying David West was top 5 PF’s in the L. I just want everyone too see where his numbers really come from. He can shoot the hell out of the ball but he is a PF in the NBA with limited athletic ability and height (long arms though) he better be good at shooting a midrange jump shot or else he wont even see the floor. The fact that CP gets him soo many open looks makes his boxscores look like he dominates games when really all he is doing is hitting jumpers. For a PF to be so reliant on his jump shot makes his boxscore “fool’s gold
that was the second thing i said allen so shut up

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    NBK
You said he didn’t earn his baskets. What does that even mean? Did Reggie Miller earn his buckets? How about Richard Hamilton? Both of those players needed other players setting screens and getting them the ball in certain spots to be successful. What about Glen Rice? Chris Mullin? Peja?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I’m literally in tears right now.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com NBK

Like i said he is not top 5 which is all i was trying to get across, Russ every player in the league should be able to hit a midrange jumper unless they are a really big man (dwight). Ya’ll are taking this way out of context, West is not a TOP PF thats all I am trying to say and I am right easy peasy. The fact that West is so reliant on CP and does nothing else outstandingly is just my proof that he is not top notch. WHat is there to even argue

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    Read my comment homie.
You CREATED an argument, and then proceeded to call everybody stupid. Name one person who said David West was Top 5 TODAY.
Why are bringing up old argument?
Why did you use the word “earn”?
If David West had to develop a mid range jumper to survive in the league, why are you complaining about it? Like several people including yourself have said, he’s undersized and not athletic?
What is your beef with David West? Why does his life bother you so much?
Why do you think there are objective, concrete answers to questions that are obviously subjective?

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Hitting jumpshots is not earning points are you kidding? Jumpers should only count for one point if you’re a power forward or center.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

NBK, I just think you need to flexible in your debates/arguments. When you basically make up your mind and decide that everyone’s response is completely wrong because you clearly have laid out your opinion and it is beyong illogical comprehension for people not to see it that way, that is just wrong. Are you Republican?

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    What is top notch?
How many outstanding things do you have to do to be top notch?
Is David West a Top 10 power forward?
Does Top 10 make you top notch?
You are setting arbitrary guidelines and then criticizing everybody who doesn’t agree to those rules. That’s some crafty stuff right there.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com NBK

I never called anyone stupid I have been tryin to refrain from personal attacks although i can’t say that for some people. I said what i brought up was mere opinion and last nights game was the best proof all year (40 points) that he relies on his jumper to score. I never said David West was bad, never said he was even below average. I said i brought up an old argument that I can’t get over. I said I did not want to discuss it a bunch. It’s not me that is getting worked up I could care less if you all agree like I said if you can’t see my point of view by looking at what happened last night you will never get it and i am cool with that.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

I just like how a guy scoring 40 points is somehow proof that he isn’t an elite player. Sheesh, I hope West never drops 50—he’ll probably get waived.

    From True Hoop on West:
40 points on 14-23 shooting, 12-13 from the free throw line, 11 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 turnovers in 42 minutes of work. This was his best game of the season. He tortured Pau Gasol inside and outside. He was raining J’s whenever he was given an inch of space, but also picked his spots to drive really well. For as much as he put the ball on the floor tonight, it’s remarkable that he turned it over just twice. He was patient with the ball out high and made strong moves to the basket whenever the lane opened up. He did a great job of beating the help defense, several times getting his dribble up and swinging the ball past the second defender on his way to the rack. That’s where he most often turns the ball over, but not tonight. Oh, and while I didn’t particularly notice West defensively in this one, it’s surely no accident that the Laker bigs all had a pretty quiet night offensively.”

pouting was what the computer spell check told me was the correct replacement for poluting. My bad

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com NBK

except i admitted that he did a good job of getting to the line after allen said that. I am well aware of what goes on the shot chart and what doesn’t. His points still came from jump shots except his 12 ft’s. If you take the points he “earned” (i know he earned them all nobody else made the baskets for him) just the ones he was not assisted on plus his ft’s..how many points would david west have had last night? If you have someway of getting the stats count how many of david wests points came without using a dribble too. It is not a big deal I obviously look for different things in games to evaluate a player then ya’ll do. But i would be interested to know what I said above.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Nbk i dont want to argue anymore but are you saying that in order for David West to ‘earn’ his points he needs to ball hog and gun shots like its nobody’s business? Because that is the Kobe Bryant circa 2006 doctrine, and that got Kobe NOWHERE besides the record books.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com NBK

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

If anything, shouldn’t he get props for always being a target to his pg therefore making CP3′s job easier. Like, no matter what goes on and even if the playu breaks down he can dish it to West?

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com NBK

thats what CP said about him last year when West hit the GW against the Cavaliers.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Are we still talking about this David West chump?

  • Candice

I shocked to find out the Bull’s are 2-8 without Gooden. Who knew that he was that important to their line-up. They did look much worse when he went down with his ankle injury.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    NBK
You posted your comment about West on this blog post and on the Line of the Night.
You are not some victim being attacked for having a divergent opinion. You are somebody who is actively seeking a confrontation because you think that you have objective, absolute answers to subjective questions.
Why are you disparaging David West on two different posts? What’s up with you and David West?
Or, do you just really like making arguments and questioning other people intelligence before giving the piss poor excuse that “it’s just an opinion.”

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Interesting stat. I would argue that Gooden probably doesn’t make that much of a difference, but maybe he does?

I said the same thing too Tadd. I guess he is our only true post up player and I think he is one of the players, Derrick is most comfortable with. Is Sheed definetely in tonight? Nothing could be better, if the Pistons were to win tonight with the Celtics losing yesterday.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

My bad, I’ll let it go.
    It’s wack anyway.

  • Nbk

I did not question anyone intelligen e about west Allen I questioned the intelligence of people who made assumptions from what I said I have been straightforward this whole time and said from the beginning my problem with david west stems from people saying he is top 5 pf in the league nobody said it today but I remember when I hear things I don’t agree with. I never said I was rgh and everyone else is wrong and I said I didn’t want a big discussion it is you Allen who won’t drop the subject and let it rest I said everything I could to help you realize it’s an opinion but to you that’s excuses so for the sake of your happiness David west is for a fact a good shooter Nd that’s the only fact I can offer. If there are typos my bad I had to leave the offce and am posting from it phone

All I know is that I watched a great game yesterday and Davis West was the man. I didn’t know scoring 40 pts could be considered fool’s gold, but what do I know?

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    Z
I like the current NBA a lot. It’s cool to have some really good teams, a few second tier teams and a bunch of crappy teams. I don’t know why, but I like it better.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Cleveland is in a weird spot right now. As good as they are, I feel they need one more player. If they can parlay Wally’s expiring into Mike Miller then they would have to be considered the favorites. Andy V has to be off limits though, he brings so much to the table (and he won’t go 1vs1 against the greatest PF of all time anymore in crunch time, I still have nightmares about his ‘shot’).

Allen: That was a great summarization. Brought a virtual tear to my eye. I’m not sold on Cleveland yet either.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Yeah, Sideshow Bob is grooving like he was before somebody told him he deserved a max contract. I agree on Wally, and they have to find a way to get Daniel Gibson to understand that he can do more than shoot three pointers. In college and high school he was much more of a slasher.

  • Candice

I won’t be able to see the game unless via NBATV. Or if it’s just happens to go over it’s time into the Pistons post game show. I guess it work’s out for me today time wise since I don’t have work tomorrow.

  • Candice

Jeez, Tadd before the NBA season and Hockey(if you care) the sports scence in Detroit must have sucked. Chicago is no better but it wasn’t high expectations for the White Sox like for the Tigers and the Bears weren’t as dreadful as the Lions. I can’t beleive they went 0-16.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

If the Detroit Lions had a better O-Line and gave Dante Culpepper some time to throw the damm ball, they would have one at least 2 games.

Allenp, Gibson doesn’t even play the point anymore, it’s kinda weird. West slides to the 1 when Mo goes on the bench. I love LeBron but I don’t know HOW this team is so good. I guess defense + rebounding + lbj will do the trick. They do have gunners to kick out to.

I’m sorry Tad but it’s not like we did any better here in Chi-town. At least you still have the Pistons and RedWings. I dont understand…why does NBK say the opposite of whats normal…? Like do you take a common point of fact… for example scoring 40 POINTS in a game..and then go looking through the manner of how those points tallied and work out, on some weird concept that only you fathom that this is somehow cheaper…or less of an achievement..? What would you have David West do…bring up the ball himself everytime and finish for a dunk…? Maybe dribble the ball around the key a few times and make a difficult layup plus the foul…? I just dont understand how you can ever qualify your own comments ever…??? EVER. EVER.
You just suck. Your a person on the earth. In front of a PC. Sprouting out who knows what kind of stupidly thought out “IMO’s” that arent worth the LCD pixels the’re highlighted by.

AND I DOUBTED THEM. Sorry fellas!!! so so so sorry.
    They were loosing too!
Snap a 13 game home streak, and only the 2nd win in Boston all season.
Von airballed a 3 then 30 seconds later nailed a DAGGER 3 to be up 2!!!! WHOOO!
Then Yao put in the offensive board and Landry was fouled b4 that- no call. Yao stayed with it and put that sucka back in.YEH! Whoo!
AND they snap a 5 game loosing streak in the process.
WITHOUT TMAC or Battier. RON RON fouled out too.

i enjoyed that heartfelt recap of the final moments of the greatest dagger into the hearts of the crappest boston team ever to win a championship.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Wow, it’s Boing. been a while since i last noticed ya in here. Well, we all knew the whole “ubuntu” thing would’nt last for more than a season, right now they are looking vulnerable, but still top 3 in the league. Not a good time to add Monsieur malcontent with a star on his dome though. Pierce and Ray all sacrificed their natural urges to be the topscorer last season, it got them to the finals (along with very important contributions from James “Horry 2006/08″ Posey). The constant harping at opponents might be a sign of a discontent locker room atmosphere, seems they might not be getting on as well lately, ah well. As Marc Jackson once said, “they get the best of every team, every game”. Now they are a in a slight decline, which is fine as long as they get back on the same page before it spirals outta control.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

And now Bron’s coming to town. Not a good time to look weak, Boston. He must be salivating thinking of going against PP and (oh jesus) Tony Allen.

Funny how when Chris Pauls assist numbers go down like last night – (7) david west’s numbers go down and he has a shtty game- but lets chalk that up to all the energy he wasted against the Lakers. If you don’t agree that West’s game is totally reliant on Pauls just look at CP’s assist numbers compared to West’s points this ENTIRE SEASON.
