The Post Up: A Bronny World

A wild night in the NBA

by Holly MacKenzie

Last night, perfect example of why I love this game.

So many games, so many great finishes. Only problem is, I didn’t get to see them.

[Insert sad face here.]

I liveblogged the Lakers/Rockets game over at The Score so for three hours I was locked in to that one and didn’t really have any time to even peep other box scores or games.

I did see the fourth quarter of the Kings and Magic. A blowout it was, but it was funny hearing the Kings announcers gush on and on and on about Dwight’s physique. I’ll be the first to admit that when I saw him in the locker room, the sheer size of his shoulders floored me, but it’s funny to Von-effing-Waferhear these grown men gushing about him stopping traffic.

About that Lakers game. Hell of an impressive performance by a Rockets team that didn’t have McGrady or Artest.

Von-effing-Wafer. Goodness. 10-14 from the floor and he looked fantastic. Must have felt good for him to stick it to the Lakers, who drafted him back in ‘05.

I was pumpppped to see Darius Miles score 13 in the Memphis loss to Cleveland. I’m rooting for this guy a whole lot, now.

Can someone please tell me how much LeBron actually weighs? I feel like he gains 15 pounds of muscle every other month. 270-something now? Seriously? Ryan Jones, step up and tell me the answer, if anyone knows this info, it’s you.

Because I didn’t see any of the games (other than Lakers/Rockets), I’ll give some short rundowns and as a special treat you’ll get recaps in 30(ish) words or less from the one and only Russ Bengtson. Facebook status updates it is not, but it’s the next best thing.

Charlotte 80 Detroit 78

The Bobcats managed to shock the Pistons and take them down 80-78 last night thanks to a shot at the buzzer from Raymond Felton. While the Pistons managed only 10 points in the forth, the Bobcats took advantage and had just enough in the tank to get the W. Felton finished with 23 points and 9 assists while Gerald Wallace had 18 and Emeka Okafor had 13 point and 9 rebounds. Rodney Stuckey had 22 points to lead the Pistons as Sheed scored 16 and Iverson added 13.

Bengtson on the Pistons/BETCats game:

“The Pistons holding the Bobcats to 80 and winning would have been bad. The Pistons holding the Bobcats to 80 and losing was worse. Larry Brown and Michael Jordan, vengeance is thine. Thouse. Whatever.”

Cleveland 102 Memphis 87

The Cavs ran away with this one early and LeBron posted another triple-double along the way. James had 30/11/10 with 3 steals and a block thrown in for good measure. Ridiculous! Delonte West scored 19 points and Mo Williams added 16. Kyle Lowry paced the Grizzlies with 25 points as Hakim Warrick continued his strong play off of the bench with 16 points and 7 rebounds.

Bengtson on Cavs/Grizz:

LeBron’s 19th career triple-double most certainly overshadowed Darius Miles’s 13-point performance—but it should be incredibly obvious to anyone with eyes that Miles’s career is far from ended. Sorry, Portland.”

Denver 99 Dallas 97

Another game that went down to the final seconds as Dirk’s 44 and 14 were not enough for the Mavs when Chauncey Billips drew a foul with 2 seconds remaining and then drained two free throws to get his boys the W. Billups finished with 23 for the Nuggets while Nene scored 20 and Dahntay Jones added 16. Jason Terry had 16 off of the bench for the Mavs and Brandon Bass added 10.

Bengtston on Mavs/Nuggs:

Dirk Nowitzki would rather not choose between 44/14 and a win. That said, if he could choose, he’d pick the one that didn’t happen.”

Phoenix 107 Atlanta 102

Without Al Horford the Hawks were unable to defeat the Suns in Phoenix last night. Still, they put up a great fight, giving the Suns trouble until the final minutes where Nash and Amare Stoudemire knocked down jumpers to keep the Suns ahead. Shaq finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds while Nash had 23 points and Leandro Barbosa added 22 off of the bench. Josh Smith had 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawks as Mike Bibby had 17 and Marvin Williams scored 16 points to go with 12 rebounds.

Bengtson on Suns/Hawks:

“The biggest argument against plus/minus? In the Suns win over the Hawks, Atlanta reserve Flip Murray had the best plus/minus of anyone. By far.”

Lakers 105 Houston 100

This one was a wild one throughout. Missing two of their stars, the Rockets elected to go small and as a result the pace of this game was ridiculous. Couple that with the fact that the Rockets didn’t attempt a free throw in the first half, and it flew by. While Houston went up early thanks to the hot shooting from Von Wafer, the game was tied at the half and Houston went into the fourth up, 82-78. In the fourth, the Lakers cut the lead and the final few minutes went back and forth as Shane Battier hit a huge corner three (also his first shot of the game), with 47 seconds remaining to put the Rockets up 100-99. Kobe responded on the other end by drilling a three of his own to give the Lakers a two point lead with 27 seconds remaining and then the Rockets fell apart as Rafer Alston missed two free throws and Yao Ming inexplicably attempted a two point shot on the Rockets final possession of the game. Kobe had 33 while Trevor Ariza scored 14 off of the bench as the Lakers had seven players in double figures. Von Wafer led the Rockets with 23 points on 10-14 shooting while Yao finished with 19 points and 17 rebounds and Carl Landry scored 21 off of the bench.

And finally, Bengtson on the Rockets/Lakers:

“With the game quite literally on the line and all eyes on him, Rafer Alston choked in much the way Charles Barkley’s date-to-be presumably wouldn’t have.”

There was a pretty good game in Minnesota (yeah, I said it)last night too.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Definitely not a bad showing at all for the Rockets. If they can play this close with a near-healthy Laker team, there’s no doubt in my mind they’re the team L.A. needs to fear come Playoff time.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Is there like a recommended umber of shots a player should take to reach 30 points? I ask because 15 doesn’t seem like that many… but 32 kind of seems like a lot.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I got to hear BET’s mouth today. I’m not happy.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Oh, and Holly: LeBron is actually 6-2, 195. I weighed and measured him myself.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Ryan, it’s all about the shot chart.

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

Von Wafer. The highlight for me on him was Holly and I searching for his career high on the score’s liveblog. seriously, that’s how random it was, him being productive. we didn’t know his career high.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I loved Russ’s breakdown of the Lakers/Rockets game.

  • http://danchamb.com.br/Home/ Lz – Cphfinest3

Ryan; a guy named Jodie dropped 54 on 22 shots last night. That’s a rather impressive number I would say. Normally I would say if you attempt the same amount of shoots, that you score points it’s okay. Unless you hoist 8+ freebies and is a +80% shooter from the line.

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

oh my god how did i miss that bengston b j joke? GREAT zinger.

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

oh, and Lz – cphfinest3: Jodie Meeks went BANANAS on Tennessee last night. 10-15 from 3pt, 15 from 22 total, 14-14 FT…WOW

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

I trust Cub will be all over the UK kid, Lz. Ridiculous from a college player.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Can we please all just allow ourselves to admit that the Cavs are the best team in the league. The reason?……They play defense. And the Magic are pretty potent too, although I’m not sure how a team that relies so much on the threeball will fare further and further into the playoffs.

  • WhaHuh

Darius Miles, Hammed Haddidi and Sun Yue all played yesterday. Very odd, also memphis are garbage- why isnt Hakim starting? he has bee their most consistent player.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I’m waiting for the requisite Kentucky joke from Jones.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

Russ Flip actually was really good last night. He was arguably the best player for the Hawks last night. My head hurts.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Hence the reason the Hawks lost.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Izzo

Meeks average last season 8.8 ppg. This season 25 ppg. That has to be worth something. He already dropped a 46 game this season too and a bunch of high thirties. He’s pretty good.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

What’s up with Horford? Is he out for an extended period?

  • http://danchamb.com.br/Home/ Lz – Cphfinest3

Justin: I know, ridiculous just watched the highlights. I’m with Eboy, my money is on the Cavs to get a ring this year. They’ll do to the Lakers exactly what Boston did last year: outhustle, outD, and outmuscle them + LeBron will of course oytplay Kobe, to lay the last few still thinking that arguments alive, choking on their tounge.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

The reason the Hawks lost is because Joe was awful and despite knowing this they still deferred to him on offense. He was like 4-21 or something. I do admire his will to keep shooting though…… Just dreadful. Oh, and Al not being there hurt too.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

He’s averaging 15 since he started getting PT Justin. That’ll go up after tonight.
Oh and the Barry to Brooks oop was very, very nice.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

And Shaq playing like it’s 2000 didn’t help us much either.

  • http://danchamb.com.br/Home/ Lz – Cphfinest3

Izzo; Meeks only played 11 games last year, some hernia problem I think – that explain something. Also; haven’t been around here for a while (please spare me basketball Gods, I promise to do the Mikan-drill the whole weekend to amend my sins) but have to say I was speechless after finding out the latest Ed Curry news..

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

Horford has a bone bruise he will be out until after this West coast trip at least.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

I can’t possibly joke about a college player scoring 54 points in a game, Tad.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

The fact that no one has yet taken umbrage at my blatant Kobe diss is shocking. I know it’s early, but still. You people are slipping.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

He had a broken hip bone or something Lz. Stress fractures or something in his hip. I forget exactly. Sucks for Meeks….
In other news, I am royally fu*ked in my match-up with Jukai now because of Joe. My fg% dropped from 47.6% to 42.5% and Pau….grr.
What did Amar’e finish with btw?
Also, Houston had a 2-5 pt lead for the majority of the game until a Laker run screwed everything up.
Can anyone confirm (from what RV said on Hibachi) that Yao has asked for T-Mac to be traded?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Sorry Ryan, it seems newpaper companies no longer deliver papers during the week. I had no boxscore readily available.

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

On Meeks, it was a Hernia. Also, he was questioned by some in Kentucky on whether or not he was committed to the program. Coming out of Norcross, GA he was also criticized for not having a good jumpshot. I am not being sarcastic here. He worked his butt off and it’s paying off.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Does TMac even have trade value?

  • Tom

Shaq is just beasting people again…..just as long as its not the 2nd game of a back to back.

So when can we admit that Kerr was right to break up the D’antoni Suns? I guess its hard to say without any playoff success yet, but this current Suns team looks much more Play-off ready than past teams.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Everyone knows people from Norcross can’t shoot jumpers. Common knowledge, no?

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

I thought “Von Wafer” was Tom Cruise’s character in that “Valkryie” movie.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

umbrage? Anyways, I dislike Kobe for the moment, so um, Kobe- your a loser! Is that stern enough?
Battier locked him down pretty well for the most part I spose barring the 4th.. But great offense usually beats great defence.

  • http://danchamb.com.br/Home/ Lz – Cphfinest3

Hursty; the guys on ESPN said that Amare had 17, didn’t see a boxscore though.

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

haha TAD, I didnt mean Norcross equates to bad jumper, I meant it more as a coming out of HS line, and since he played in Norcross, I said that. haha I hope I didn’t diss an entire area of america’s hoops!

I think the Suns are definitely better suited to win a title this year. I mean yeah, they have lapses on defense still, but they can clean that up…….

The hype LA got in the beginning of the year was deserved eboy, i mean even you were saying nice things about them. Buts thats because for that month or so they actually played defense. Since then it seems like they are just happy to try and outscore everyone, and as a Lakers fan that just kills me, because they saw what that got them last year. Until they decide to focus on d again, the West is wide open i think. And yes, Cavs are the best team in the league, i don’t think anyone can argue that right now.

Damn the Pistons and their patented collapses. The announcers showed a stat last night taht said the Pistons are very good in games decided by 10 points or less, but every time I watch a game it seems like they give back a lead and have to scramble at the end. Man, if they could maintain focus and execution they would be so scary. Also, I was wrong about Iverson losing a step, at least he didn’t appear to have lost one last night. He looked like the young Iverson attacking the rim at will. And that game is why Rasheed hates refs. They shafted him on that last play. You cannot make that call after letting it go the play before. Ridiculous.

The only reason they aren’t in the NBA basement is because they haven’t played OKC or some other dreg of a team in a while to truly ram it into our minds how ridiculously bad they are. THE REFS IN THE ROCKETS, LAKERS GAME WERE OBVIOUSLY ALL OVER THE LAKERS NUTS. THE ROCKETS FIRST FREE THROW CAME AT 7 35 IN THE THIRD!!QTR. THERE WERE MANY RETARDED CALLS, ESP ON YAO AND WAFER. AND WHATS UP WITH VON WAFER NOT GETTING ANY FGAS AT THE END OF THE GAME. AARON BROOKS NEEDS TO CURTAIL HIS TRIGGERHAPPYNESS.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Von Wafer is one of my favorite players. He’s so slept on. He is also a patient guy, which is what I like about him. Whether its being the 12th man on the roster, or being a starter, he brings it 110% each game. I’m glad to see him starting after spending so many games on the back end of the bench, because he’s paid his dues and now he’s being rewarded.
His shooting and slashing is razor sharp, and he is superbly athletic. He’s going to be an All-Star one day.
    Just like Wilson Chandler.

wow. Twenty three from downtown. MJ symbolism right there. I thought nba teams did advance scouting? So they missed the part about the magic’s manchild being surrounded by long distance gunners? How horrible was THAT D? Howitzer even sat out the fourth. Dirk Werner with 44&14 in the tight loss? Feel your pain there, blondy. Wasted effort by the mavs. But that Chauncey is super crafty.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Tarzan, Brooks had a bad game as far as i can tell by the boxscore, but he has a lot more good games because he IS trigger happy, AKA confident. Rafer is the one who needs to control himself. I did hear a lto about the foul issue, didn’t see the game so I don’t have an opinion, but apparently even the Rockets commentator (Matt Bullard) was fuming post game..i know he’s nobody, but it just shows how frustrated he is to see Yao’s game called terribly game after game.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

I think Yao was talking about the All-Star game

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

i don’t know how von wafer didn’t make it with other teams, kobe said he was streaky with LA, but the kid has always shot well, so it must be in-game streaky, he had to show game in practice and there’s definitely others who have been given more time to “get” it. Not many guys have the mix of athleticism and shooting ability. He also gets up high on his shot, so he can get if off on (almost?) anyone

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

brooks is a nice player, he can take and make lots of shots. its just that last night it seems like he was pretending he played on the 06 suns, he would catch the ball off one pass barely across half court, then just launch a bad three without even looking to do anything else. skip had a couple bad possessions at the end too. there were a few times in the game where the rockets forget what got them there, they didnt get the ball to yao in the post for a few possessions in a row, that is not a recipe for victory.

Tarzan, that’d due to the game plan constantly changing, sometimes even right before tip off. That’s what is believed to be pissing off Tracy’s teammates. With him sitting out every other game almost, then “coming back”. then going out, then coming bacl, but saying mins prior ot tip off he cant…well guys like Brooks suffer because his role changes every game. Sometimes he’s asked to be a shooter, other times a creator, both, or just set up the offense…

There is also a book by Mark Stewart about Hakeem i have not read it but it should be in there it is a biography you can go to the Library or you can read on the court with HAKEEM Olajuwan by Matt Christopher

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

“If there was a moment when this rededication became most obvious to the reporters covering the team, it was when Olajuwon decided that he could no longer be referred to in writing as “Akeem”. His parents were in town for a visit, and he wanted them to see his name appear correctly in the newspaper. Blinebury was in the press work room, writing a game day story, when the Rockets public relations director at the time, Jay Goldberg, informed reporters that the spelling from now on was “Hakeem”, not “Akeem”. That was the proper spelling all along, but Olajuwon had allowed everyone to spell his name incorrectly. The “H” at the start of the name was very soft, nearly unpronounced. “It is a name that comes from the Qur’an and was really just a mispronunciation (Akeem) rather than the correct spelling and pronunciation of Hakeem,” Olajuwon explained. “Again, when i became more knowledgeable, I decided to correct it.” Hakeem means literally “wise man, a doctor,” in Arabic, Akeem means nothing. When he first changed it back in 1991, Olajuwon said this was “no big deal.” “I just want to go back to using the original spelling. Akeem is just the way that many people write my name when they are putting it into English,” he explained. “Even back at home in Nigeria, some of my teachers in high school spelled it one way, some the other. I didn’t think it mattered when i first came here and they spelled it that way at the University of Houston. But when i would go back home or when i would talk to my mother, she would ask me why my name has changed. I always thought it would be something very complicated to change.” It wasn’t complicated at all. The writers started writing “Hakeem” and that was that. The only one who had trouble with it, at least for a while, was Olajuwon himself. For some time, he still would sign autographs “Akeem”. “Tip-Off: How the 1984 NBA Draft Changed Basketball Forever” Filip Bondy. pgs. 189-190.

Oh, the Kings…The score got run up but it wasn’t like the Magic were playing much defense, they still let the Kings score 107 with 5 players in double figures. And the Magic were playing the end of their bench for much of the fourth…it isn’t their fault the Kings suck. Times are rough in the 916. Also, Kings fans just pretended Hedo was still on their team and so it seemed much closer. (Why do the Kings never keep around young talent? Or any talent for that matter? Webbeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer!)

Dude was a beast but we still have one bad contract to go before I forgive him. (someone please make Kenny Thomas’ contract expire sooner!)

LeBron said he was 273 pounds at the start of the season

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

    good to hear

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

“What, 270? No, that’s not true,” James said. “It’s a rumor, I don’t like rumors.”

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

LeBron loves rumors hello NY – his brand is staying on everyones mind because he LOVES rumors. IMO

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

People add about 2-3 lbs per incredible games. And one inch a year.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Lebron looks like Julius Peppers back when he played for North Carolina.

And Julius Peppers was a legit 270. I think Lebron is 270, but he’s shy about his weight.
    lol

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

Who cares how much he ways nobody can slow him down regardless.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

I care how much he “weighs” because the combination of weight, speed and athletic ability are what make his so freaking awesome. Plus, it’s interesting to wonder how large he would be able to get before he started sacrificing something in his game. Or, it’s interesting to wonder if he will be able to carry all that weight for the rest of his career.
And it’s infintely more interesting than arguing whether an “H” is missing from the name of the Greatest Center of my generation.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

infinitely huh? talking about how much a dude weighs? and you’ll never find the answer? or do you just feel like tryin to make yourself sound better then me? Both subjects are pretty pointless neither infinitely more anything then the other. But he will be able to carry all that weight the rest of his career its his career thats not interesting at all.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

His combination of weight speed and athletic ability are what make him soo awesome? Uhm what about his high IQ, ability to see the floor, his make his team better first rather then himself style. Those things don’t play any role in his “freaking awesomeness?” If it were just the physical things that mattered how come we dont all watch the decatholon

  • Myung

I agree with nbk; both are pretty pointless arguments. It’s more fun to try to figure out Zaza Pachulia’s real age. He’s supposedly 24. Right.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

supposedly he looks like father times dad

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

    supposedly(24 is right),***

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

allenp, Lebron isn’t as big as it seems…that doesn’t mean he’s not freakishly huge, but I think he’s built solid literally from head to toe so he looks comparable to some defensive ends in overall size…but when you look at certain things like arm size or leg size he’s not quite there. Maybe its due to his muscles having less pump due to the movements in basketball, as oppose to football. That being said, the question should be how much does he weigh in the OFFSEASON…

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

How does Zaza get questioned over Oden? He looks like Deke’s father.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

Because Oden is Bill Russels older twin seperated at birth, it isn’t even a mystery

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

I’m going to hate myself for this.
    NBK
While it’s great that Lebron has a high basketball IQ, sees the floor well and is a wonderful teammate, that’s not that unusual. In fact, I’m sure you can name at least 25 players in the league who also do those things without breaking a sweat.
What makes him awesome is that he does those things and is an athletic freak. At least that’s what makes him awesom to me. Nobody in the history of the NBA has ever had the body type and athletic of ability of Lebron James.
He’s a one of one, as one of his friends might put it.
That’s why I find it interesting to wonder if he really is 270 and wonder how well his body will hold up over the years. Because that’s part of what makes him so unique and awe-inspiring.
    Good day.
    I said, good day.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

I know what makes him who he is allen. I am giving you a hard time don’t get defensive…. and his body will hold up better then everyone elses if you haven’t figured that out already. Dudes never been hurt because he is so well porportioned and solidly built. Think oscar robertson + weights (they didn’t use the weightroom in the 70′s)

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

    go f**k yourself san diego

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

Oscar Robertson didn’t play in the 1970′s. Least ways, not his prime.

Check my 11:03a comment. Yeah, I’m always right. Roger Mason Jr.!!! Kobe and his stolen big balls dance was just another reminder of why he’s such a hated douchebag. Good times!

  • AlbertBarr

Big Balls dance was awesome…Trevor’s travel call…not so much.

  • AlbertBarr

Roger Mason is stoked to be on the Spurs.
