The Post Up: A Bronny World

A wild night in the NBA

by Holly MacKenzie

Last night, perfect example of why I love this game.

So many games, so many great finishes. Only problem is, I didn’t get to see them.

[Insert sad face here.]

I liveblogged the Lakers/Rockets game over at The Score so for three hours I was locked in to that one and didn’t really have any time to even peep other box scores or games.

I did see the fourth quarter of the Kings and Magic. A blowout it was, but it was funny hearing the Kings announcers gush on and on and on about Dwight’s physique. I’ll be the first to admit that when I saw him in the locker room, the sheer size of his shoulders floored me, but it’s funny to Von-effing-Waferhear these grown men gushing about him stopping traffic.

About that Lakers game. Hell of an impressive performance by a Rockets team that didn’t have McGrady or Artest.

Von-effing-Wafer. Goodness. 10-14 from the floor and he looked fantastic. Must have felt good for him to stick it to the Lakers, who drafted him back in ‘05.

I was pumpppped to see Darius Miles score 13 in the Memphis loss to Cleveland. I’m rooting for this guy a whole lot, now.

Can someone please tell me how much LeBron actually weighs? I feel like he gains 15 pounds of muscle every other month. 270-something now? Seriously? Ryan Jones, step up and tell me the answer, if anyone knows this info, it’s you.

Because I didn’t see any of the games (other than Lakers/Rockets), I’ll give some short rundowns and as a special treat you’ll get recaps in 30(ish) words or less from the one and only Russ Bengtson. Facebook status updates it is not, but it’s the next best thing.

Charlotte 80 Detroit 78

The Bobcats managed to shock the Pistons and take them down 80-78 last night thanks to a shot at the buzzer from Raymond Felton. While the Pistons managed only 10 points in the forth, the Bobcats took advantage and had just enough in the tank to get the W. Felton finished with 23 points and 9 assists while Gerald Wallace had 18 and Emeka Okafor had 13 point and 9 rebounds. Rodney Stuckey had 22 points to lead the Pistons as Sheed scored 16 and Iverson added 13.

Bengtson on the Pistons/BETCats game:

“The Pistons holding the Bobcats to 80 and winning would have been bad. The Pistons holding the Bobcats to 80 and losing was worse. Larry Brown and Michael Jordan, vengeance is thine. Thouse. Whatever.”

Cleveland 102 Memphis 87

The Cavs ran away with this one early and LeBron posted another triple-double along the way. James had 30/11/10 with 3 steals and a block thrown in for good measure. Ridiculous! Delonte West scored 19 points and Mo Williams added 16. Kyle Lowry paced the Grizzlies with 25 points as Hakim Warrick continued his strong play off of the bench with 16 points and 7 rebounds.

Bengtson on Cavs/Grizz:

LeBron’s 19th career triple-double most certainly overshadowed Darius Miles’s 13-point performance—but it should be incredibly obvious to anyone with eyes that Miles’s career is far from ended. Sorry, Portland.”

Denver 99 Dallas 97

Another game that went down to the final seconds as Dirk’s 44 and 14 were not enough for the Mavs when Chauncey Billips drew a foul with 2 seconds remaining and then drained two free throws to get his boys the W. Billups finished with 23 for the Nuggets while Nene scored 20 and Dahntay Jones added 16. Jason Terry had 16 off of the bench for the Mavs and Brandon Bass added 10.

Bengtston on Mavs/Nuggs:

Dirk Nowitzki would rather not choose between 44/14 and a win. That said, if he could choose, he’d pick the one that didn’t happen.”

Phoenix 107 Atlanta 102

Without Al Horford the Hawks were unable to defeat the Suns in Phoenix last night. Still, they put up a great fight, giving the Suns trouble until the final minutes where Nash and Amare Stoudemire knocked down jumpers to keep the Suns ahead. Shaq finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds while Nash had 23 points and Leandro Barbosa added 22 off of the bench. Josh Smith had 24 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawks as Mike Bibby had 17 and Marvin Williams scored 16 points to go with 12 rebounds.

Bengtson on Suns/Hawks:

“The biggest argument against plus/minus? In the Suns win over the Hawks, Atlanta reserve Flip Murray had the best plus/minus of anyone. By far.”

Lakers 105 Houston 100

This one was a wild one throughout. Missing two of their stars, the Rockets elected to go small and as a result the pace of this game was ridiculous. Couple that with the fact that the Rockets didn’t attempt a free throw in the first half, and it flew by. While Houston went up early thanks to the hot shooting from Von Wafer, the game was tied at the half and Houston went into the fourth up, 82-78. In the fourth, the Lakers cut the lead and the final few minutes went back and forth as Shane Battier hit a huge corner three (also his first shot of the game), with 47 seconds remaining to put the Rockets up 100-99. Kobe responded on the other end by drilling a three of his own to give the Lakers a two point lead with 27 seconds remaining and then the Rockets fell apart as Rafer Alston missed two free throws and Yao Ming inexplicably attempted a two point shot on the Rockets final possession of the game. Kobe had 33 while Trevor Ariza scored 14 off of the bench as the Lakers had seven players in double figures. Von Wafer led the Rockets with 23 points on 10-14 shooting while Yao finished with 19 points and 17 rebounds and Carl Landry scored 21 off of the bench.

And finally, Bengtson on the Rockets/Lakers:

“With the game quite literally on the line and all eyes on him, Rafer Alston choked in much the way Charles Barkley’s date-to-be presumably wouldn’t have.”

And where the fu*k is Myles game notes? His sh*t must have froze up. There are readers patiently waiting, Sir Brown.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

Yeah but his name IS NOT akeem, if you posted this in 1991 you would be right….mr all knowing i do not need wikipedia to know hakeem’s name is hakeem. And he did not embrace islam he became a more devout muslim. I would not expect someone as self indulged as you to care if your right with the things you say just try and make someone else feel “inferior” And hakeem did not change his name he corrected it. Douchebag

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

Tarzan his name has akeem until 1991 when he realized in arabic it is supposed to be hakeem. but in a way darksaber was right it used to be akeem

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

CYT, you love that whole douchebag/tampoon line of insults, don’t you?

  • http://www.bbaxn.com Darksaber

oh well, can’t be loved by all. Holly, do you scope all other sports journalist’s articles on nba ball or just specific ones like adande? I’ve grown very fond of Bill Simmons views on B-ball (and other subjects)

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

it helps to drive home the point that when someone is tryin to make someone else feel stupid when actually they don’t know what they are talking about that they are stupid and ignorant (i would rather just say douchebag)

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

but thanks for teachin me how to spell it, has a lot more clout when i spell it right (because when i don’t i seem like a douchebag)

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

no, it never used to be akeem. it has always been hakeem, he just didnt care to correct the officials at houston college, and it went on from there until he realized he was doing himself, his family, and his religion an injustice by allowing everyone to call him akeem. READ A BOOK.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Just checking, broham.

  • http://www.bbaxn.com Darksaber

i sure do enjoy your witty little rants never.been.kissed. Especially since you started adressing what i wrote, which was a response to a question by Holly. That’s fine though, go on with your ranting. Hakeem it is, yayy. You just scored another point. Now please find someone else to harass. You bore me beyond comprehension

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

birth name TARZAN – AKEEM ABDUL OLAJUWAN you read a book…….douchebag

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Is it ok for me to say this……..(please don’t kill me, plese don’t kill me)I saw a early screening of “Notorious” last night and it was…………….pretty damn good. Not perfect (dude that played Pac wasn’t believable, too much blowing the horn of Diddy and BIG’s mom)but it was a really strong showing in something that could have totally shi&ted on the legacy of perhaps the greatest MC of all time.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

Just trying to improve your intellect Darksaber because you sound like a liar when you say you’ve always been someone’s fan and know nothing about them.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

So it was worth seeing? its better then the 50 cent movie (don’t remember what that was called)

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

wait a minute…Darksaber corrected NBK, then Tarzan corrected both of them, only for NBK to correct them both AND himself?? A cookie for whoever figures out who REALLY is correct!

  • http://fjdlskfl.com Jukai

Hysterical fact: NBK claims he does not use wikipedia but one of his posts sounded like it came word-by-word from Wikipedia. “Became a more devout muslim” and some such. Very amusing.

  • http://slamonline.com Holly MacKenzie

Darksaber, I read waaaay too many nba writers and pieces each day. haha
I did enjoy the Adande piece a lot though, particularly the final paragraph. Tied it up perfectly.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

then maybe whoever wrote that wikipedia article watched the same beyond the glory as i did.

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

so nbk, do you have a source for that or are you just pulling it out of your butt?

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

im correct, this kid is just saying stuff that he read on the internets, then claiming he read it in a book.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

Hakeem Abdul Olajuwon (born Akeem Abdul Olajuwon on January 21, 1963 in Lagos, Nigeria) is a former college and professional basketball player whose glory days were with the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association.
spritus-temporis .com (don’t know what it means)
    bookrags .com also
you can watch beyond the glory too if you want

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

why would i make something like that up?

  • http://www.bbaxn.com Darksaber

ah so? I knew my grandfather should not have done business with the extended olajuwon family back in the early 80′s. Seems they gave their famous sibling a totally valid name, only for him to change the spelling, that rascal. Which nbk just acknowledged…. After memorizing wiki, of course. Seems i said just that a while back. So where was i? Oh yeah, Holly

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

“One misunderstanding remained for years: Hakeem allowed the college to spell his name “Akeem” instead of “Hakeem”. The “H” was pronounced softly, anyway, and Olajuwon didn’t want to make a fuss at first.” ….”Tip Off-How the 1984 NBA Draft Changed Basketball Forever” Filip Bondy, pg50.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

HIS NAME IS NOT AKEEM- legally it is HAKEEM because AKEEM is disrespectful- you can also go to http://knowledgerush.com/kr/encyclopedia/Hakeem_Olajuwon/

  • http://www.bbaxn.com Darksaber

Yeah, Adande’s piece was on point. I kinda miss Scoop’s unique views on proball. He’s been awfully quiet over there chez les worldwide followers lately.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

THE link is awaiting moderation so you can read for yourself and it is not wiki

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

There is also a book by Mark Stewart about Hakeem i have not read it but it should be in there it is a biography you can go to the Library or you can read on the court with HAKEEM Olajuwan by Matt Christopher

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

“If there was a moment when this rededication became most obvious to the reporters covering the team, it was when Olajuwon decided that he could no longer be referred to in writing as “Akeem”. His parents were in town for a visit, and he wanted them to see his name appear correctly in the newspaper. Blinebury was in the press work room, writing a game day story, when the Rockets public relations director at the time, Jay Goldberg, informed reporters that the spelling from now on was “Hakeem”, not “Akeem”. That was the proper spelling all along, but Olajuwon had allowed everyone to spell his name incorrectly. The “H” at the start of the name was very soft, nearly unpronounced. “It is a name that comes from the Qur’an and was really just a mispronunciation (Akeem) rather than the correct spelling and pronunciation of Hakeem,” Olajuwon explained. “Again, when i became more knowledgeable, I decided to correct it.” Hakeem means literally “wise man, a doctor,” in Arabic, Akeem means nothing. When he first changed it back in 1991, Olajuwon said this was “no big deal.” “I just want to go back to using the original spelling. Akeem is just the way that many people write my name when they are putting it into English,” he explained. “Even back at home in Nigeria, some of my teachers in high school spelled it one way, some the other. I didn’t think it mattered when i first came here and they spelled it that way at the University of Houston. But when i would go back home or when i would talk to my mother, she would ask me why my name has changed. I always thought it would be something very complicated to change.” It wasn’t complicated at all. The writers started writing “Hakeem” and that was that. The only one who had trouble with it, at least for a while, was Olajuwon himself. For some time, he still would sign autographs “Akeem”. “Tip-Off: How the 1984 NBA Draft Changed Basketball Forever” Filip Bondy. pgs. 189-190.

Well, the way NBK argues, I sometimes think of him as three different people. Quite entertaining, actually.

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

let me guess there are two of them that you can’t stand and one that you can put up with?
i’m goin to lunch free rain without mr posts a bunch (thats me)

    NBK is learning.

  • Myung

Wasn’t there a post with a lot of comments by Raptors fans who were offended that the Celtics threw an alley-oop after the game was decided? Why aren’t there Kings fans infuriated by the running-up of the score in the Magic game? The Magic kept firing up 3′s in a game they’d win by 32. Do we have any Kings fans on this site?

  • Myung

BTW, my preseason pick for Eastern Conference champ was Orlando so I had no problem with them routing the Kings last night. I think they can beat Cleveland (Ron Jeremy > Mike Brown).

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

I doubt Kings fans want to admit they exist right now. Just guessing.
Plus, Canadians have an inferiority complex. People from Sacremento just accept the fact that they don’t count.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    Kings fans? Myung is funny.
