The Post Up: Night of Crickets

Spurs…Clips…Mavs…Knicks.

by Holly MacKenzie

Friday, Friday, where did the week go?

Nine days into 2009 already, I just don’t get it. You know what else I didn’t get? Why there were only two games on the NBA schedule last night and both were gross match ups. Dallas @ New York and LA Clippers @ San Antonio.

Yup.

I worked an evening shift at The Score so I didn’t watch either game, but because I was working for a sports network (and this is truly, the only reason why I stumbled upon this info), I finally clued in that the NCAA Football championship game was on and this was why the NBA had such a light schedule.

For all of you football fans, whoooooo, Go Gators!

That’s about all I know on that.

Back to basketball and I don’t know much more this morning, I’m sorry. I can tell you that the Spurs defeated the Clippers handily, taking them down, 106-84. Tony Parker had 19 points, Michael Finley had 15 points, Manu Ginobili scored 13 points and of course, Roger Mason scored 18, on a night that I forgot to start ANYONE on my fantasy team. Tim Duncan was held to only 8 points, but he added 9 assists on the evening. The Clippers had 21-point efforts from both Al Thornton and Eric Gordon in the loss.

Dallas was able to grind out the 99-94 victory against a Knicks team that was fighting until the end. Josh Howard had 19 points for the Mavs as Jason Kidd scored 16 points and Antoine Wright scored 13. Chris Duhon was brilliant for the Knicks in the loss, scoring 23 Dirk sick, but getting it done.points on 10-14 shooting as Wilson Chandler scored 20 and David Lee had 13 points to go with his 14 rebounds. It was not a good game for Dirk Nowitzki who scored only 11 points as he battled a cold and fever of 101.

Now onto tonight’s schedule. Memphis is in Toronto and I cannot wait to see OJ. He’s still my Rookie of the Year, no matter what you all say. Boston @ Cleveland is going to be an interesting one. Cleveland hasn’t lost at home yet this season and the Celtics reallllly need a W. Could they pull one out in Bron’s house and make a statement? The Pacers are in LA to face the Lakers and you know Kobe and Co. will want revenge on that last-second loss when they were in Indy. Regardless of roster rehauls, Dallas @ Phoenix will be one to watch and you know I’ll be tuning in, as soon as I get home from the Memphis game.

Well guys, I think that’s pretty much it.

I had this convo with a friend last night and I know we’ve had it here before, but quick recap, since we’re only a few weeks (!), away from the All Star break. Who are your major award winners so far? MVP, MIP, ROY, 6th Man, DPOY, COY?

Who is your All NBA First team?

Who is going to win the title this season?

I’ve been doing lots of thinking lately. Let me hear your thoughts.

Now, go have a wonderful weekend and catch up with me Monday morning.

Oops! One more thing, check this amazing story about an amazing girl and her love for basketball, then check the by-line. Really, it’s a wonderful story.

    ROY: Derrick Rose
    COY: Mike Woodson (yup)
6th Man: Manu (is there anyone else?)
    DPOY: Howitzer
    Champs: I plead the fifth.

  • H to the Izzo Posted: Jan.9 at 9:48 am
TAD:You choosing Woodson is almost as bad as me choosing JR Smith as 6th man.

  • neaorin Posted: Jan.9 at 9:51 am
MVP: LeBron (can you be Most Valuable when you’re sitting out entire fourth quarters?)
    MIP: Devin Harris
    ROY: Eric Gord… erm, Rose
COY: Pop (no I will NOT pick Mike Brown dammit)
    6TH Man: Manu
    DPOY: Howard
All NBA 1st team: Dwight Timmy LBJ Wade CP3
    Champs: Cavs (oh yeah)

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 9:53 am
Izzo: In all seriousness, why not? He has just as good of a case as anyone else. If the Hawks win 50+ for the first time since Nique, that is pretty impressive.

  • Ken Posted: Jan.9 at 9:56 am
MVP: Bron, unless the Heat end up with a top 4 seed, in which case Wade.
MIP: Duhon, honorable mention to Harris
    COY: Popp.
    ROY: Westbrook.
6th Man: I’m not even sure who qualifies as a 6th man this year, what with all the injuries. Does Kevin Martin qualify?
    DPOY: Howard
1st team: Kobe, Wade, LBJ, Duncan, DHoward

  • Bryan Posted: Jan.9 at 9:57 am
Mvp is gonna be Lebron, but by the end of the year I expect Mr. Bryant to make it a race and possibly Dwight Howard to steal some votes.I like Mayo for rookie of the year. Devin for mip,Mike Dantoni for coy for not jumping off msg when the team he came to coach was picked apart with hopes of signing someone good in 2010.Dwight dpoy.Jason Terry sixth man by a long shot.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 9:59 am
What? No mention of Eddy Curry’s triumphant return? He was panting like a St. Bernard in July less than a minute in, it was amazing. Oh yeah, and he can’t dunk yet. Apparently.

  • Co Co Posted: Jan.9 at 10:00 am
    MVP- Eh
    MIP-Paul Milsap
    ROY-O.J.
    COY-Nate Mac
    6th-Gino
    DPOY-IDK
    First Team- Usual Suspects
    Champs-Spurs

  • Hursty Posted: Jan.9 at 10:02 am
yeh, I forgot about Jason Terry! 20+ points off the bench with some assits and rebounds to boot!

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 10:03 am
I thought they were holding Eddy back until he got into better shape? You mean he was in worse shape than that?!?

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 10:03 am
Damn, yeah Jason Terry for 6th Man. And Co Co also reminded me of Millsap for MIP.

  • Hursty Posted: Jan.9 at 10:04 am
Russ he was a -9 in 2mins 38 seconds. Impressive.

  • Z Posted: Jan.9 at 10:04 am
    MVB: Bron
    MIP: Harris
    ROY: Jus d’orange et mayonnaise
COY: Mike Brown (his defensive schemes have been slept on for a minute and he was smart enough to defer to asst coaches to create some ball movement)
6TH: Jason Terry (surprised that he wasn’t mentioned yet)
    CHAMPS: Cavs over Spurs

  • H to the Izzo Posted: Jan.9 at 10:05 am
TAD:As a coach,I’ve never been a big fan of Wooden and I think there’s a few more currently ahead of him(including Spoelstra).I think Mike Brown(who Im not a fan of either)possibly leading the Cavs to a 60 win season is more impressive, especially the production and performances he’s getting from those who aren’t LeBron.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 10:05 am
    MVP: LeBron
MIP: Devin Harris (or Paul Millsap)
    ROY: The Juice
    COY: Jerry frickin’ Sloan already
Exec of the Year: Danny Ferry
    6th man: JET
DPOY: I don’t feel qualified to answer this question.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 10:08 am
Oh yeah, the champs. I’m not ready to put that out there yet, either. There’s an awful lot of time left in the season. That said, if you threatened me with jumper cables attached to a truck battery, I’d probably pick the Cavs.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 10:10 am
Eddy Curry appears to be in spectacularly bad shape. Perhaps they were showcasing him to potential lottery teams who are interested in tanking the rest of the season.

  • Co Co Posted: Jan.9 at 10:13 am
If that’s the case then the Knicks should sign him. Wait….

  • H to the Izzo Posted: Jan.9 at 10:15 am
Chris Paul could make Eddy Curry and All Star in 3-9 minutes.Guaransheed.

  • H to the Izzo Posted: Jan.9 at 10:15 am
    an All Star*

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 10:16 am
Izzo: I’m not a fan of Woodson the coach either. But, if we are to include Spoelstra in the discussion, then Woody should certainly be in there as well. Just saying.

  • Eboy Posted: Jan.9 at 10:16 am
Denny’s could make Eddy Curry 10 stacks of pancakes in 3-9 minutes. Guaransheed.

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 10:16 am
He has done wonders for David West.

  • Eboy Posted: Jan.9 at 10:17 am
Well, I only included Spoelstra TAD, no one else is that arrogant. Although he has done a good job.

  • H to the Izzo Posted: Jan.9 at 10:21 am
TAD:Correction:”He has done wonders for the infinite pile of nothing that was David West”.CP3 insists this be included.
I only included Spoelstra because I genuinely thought that the Heat were gonna get far worse. He’s obviously behind Wooden. But I still think Mike Brown SHOULD get it.

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 10:21 am
I’m just upset that Co Co hasn’t co-signed my Woodson for COY comment. I know her perpetual disdain for him isn’t that deep.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Jan.9 at 10:22 am
MVP: Tim Duncan! Sorry, I meant LeBron!
    MIP: Danny Granger/Devin Harris/Paul Milsap (?)
    ROY: OJ Mayo
    COY: Sloan or Popp
DPOY: Dwight; And its not close
6th man: Jason Terry now, but Manu could steal it late

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 10:23 am
I actually agree that Mike Brown is in the lead at this moment.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Jan.9 at 10:23 am
Wooden and Mike Brown would both be worthy COYs as well.

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 10:26 am
Granger would be a worthy MIP. So no one really agrees with me that Stuckey should be in the MIP discussion? Really?

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 10:26 am
If I’m the Bulls, I try and engineer some kind of Hinrich for Curry swap.

  • neaorin Posted: Jan.9 at 10:27 am
Regarding the Cavs offense, Mike Brown did the only right thing he could do: let the people who actually knew what they were doing in charge of running it. Which still counts for something I guess.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 10:27 am
Although I guess Kirk’s contract extends beyond 2010. Dammit.

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 10:29 am
I had forgotten about Hinrich. Does he even get much burn these days?

  • Co Co Posted: Jan.9 at 10:30 am
Tad, I cannot do it right now. I’m still of the thinking they win in spite of him. Although there’s still time for him to change my mind. And hell all of the starters are averaging like 45 minutes. (slight exaggeration) When you play your best players for the whole game you should win. But if the OKC coach, whomever he is gets them to ten wins he should get consideration for COY.

  • H to the Izzo Posted: Jan.9 at 10:31 am
I feel like there’s probably a better defensive player in the NBA,but there’s no way Dwight’s not going to win it.

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 10:35 am
    Like Nash or Iverson, izzo?

  • H to the Izzo Posted: Jan.9 at 10:37 am
    Larry Brown,Tad.

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 10:37 am
Agree Co Co. Of course, you did lose your best 6th man. I’m not even sure who comes off the Hawks bench. Has Acie Law been reported missing?

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 10:39 am
Hinrich has been hurt for the past 70 games or so. Which means he should be doing much better in the All-Star voting. Also, calling Mike Woodson “Wooden” is like calling Eddy Curry “Chamberlain.”

  • Co Co Posted: Jan.9 at 10:40 am
Flip Murray and Moe Evans come off the bench and of course my personal favorite, Za Za! I think they should be talking with Josh’s people trying to get him back over here. That would improve the team and they wouldn’t even have to make a trade. They need to kiss and makeup.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 10:41 am
Actually, P.J. Carlesimo should get coach of the year for intelligently getting himself fired three weeks into the season. Best coaching move of the year by far.

  • DUHON IS GOD Posted: Jan.9 at 10:41 am
u gotta start watchin dem games BOIIIII

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jan.9 at 10:42 am
I don’t see Josh coming back to the Hawks anytime soon. They never even made him an offer, and they gave his freaking number away before he even got his passport!

  • H to the Izzo Posted: Jan.9 at 10:43 am
Can I hide my idiocy by claiming it was a pun.Nah,I’m just stupi.Who knew you could Freudian type?

  • H to the Izzo Posted: Jan.9 at 10:48 am
I’ve been watching Josh alot playing over on this part of the Atlantic. Not only is he not dominating,he often looks lost and unskilled.Luckily his athleticism has him putting up decent numbers.Should act as a lesson for all average to good NBA players out there:If you can make a healthy living and see out the rest of your career in the NBA,you probably shuld. He probably has the ugliest and most uncomfortable shot I’ve ever seen.He gives the customary ‘ex-coach’ commentators heart-attacks constatntly.

  • Co Co Posted: Jan.9 at 10:52 am
I still think they could kiss and make up Russ. They should at least talk to him. They did make him an offer, it was just lower than what he wanted. Same with the other more important Josh. Luckily for him though the Grizzlies made him an offer and they matched, but whatever. They need to try to get him back over here. I think he can clearly see they had him valued correctly.

  • Vannshy Posted: Jan.9 at 10:58 am
    MVP: Tim Duncan
    MiP: Devin Harris
ROY: Eric Rose and the Spurs all the way for the title, dont forget it’s 2009, those guys win it every odd year 99, 03, 05 and 07. Too bad they couldn’t do it in ‘01 it would have been fun (Im still mad at Juwan Howard for that flagrant foul on Derek Anderson by the way)

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 10:58 am
Pistons @ Nuggets tonight should be really good. No Melo be damned.

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 11:05 am
    Worse than Shawn Marion’s, izzo?

  • BETCATS Posted: Jan.9 at 11:09 am
    MVP: WADE
    MIP: Duhon
    DPOY- Okafor/Howard/Camby
6th Man- DJ Augisin or Jason Terry
    ROY- Rose/OJ/DJ/Russel Westbrook
COY- D’Antoni(bringing sexy back to NY)

  • Z Posted: Jan.9 at 11:09 am
Damn, I might have to change my MIP, we kinda know that Harris had it in him. Milsapp is beasting. / DPOY? I’m not ready to say Howard. The blocks are there but you can pump fake him into silly fouls. Sh–, I don’t even know. A collective award for the Cavs and their sick defensive rotations?

  • Allenp Posted: Jan.9 at 11:11 am
We shall see who has the big game tonight, Iverson or Billups. If I had to guess, it would be Billups, simply because I think he will be more pumped at the opportunity.
But, I never count out Iverson.
Denver media is predictably saying that the trade has proved that Iverson was previously overvalued. Sigh. I remember how many games Denver won before Iverson got there. I remember what he did that first year when Melo was out and Nene was hurt. When the second best player on the team was probably Earl Boykins. I guess I’m the only one.

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 11:14 am
    Your not Allen.

  • Allenp Posted: Jan.9 at 11:16 am
They usually give DPOY to big men based on blocks and rebounds. That’s what happened with Camby, so I’m thinking Howard has it locked up.

  • Z Posted: Jan.9 at 11:19 am
I’ve never fancied Camby that much either. He’s a weakside shotblocker but guys do score on him one-on-one on the block.

  • Allenp Posted: Jan.9 at 11:22 am
Oh, I think Camby is overrated as a true defender, but just pointing out that it’s not unprecedented for blocks and rebounds to be overvalued and Howard has both of those things on lock.
Honestly, I think he deserves it. His team is playing much better defense overall, and they aren’t really defenders. Plus, I really like his activity, which is not something you see all the time from star big men. He’s rarely coasting, particularly when it comes to rebounds.

  • BETCATS Posted: Jan.9 at 11:29 am
Dont sleep on Okafor for some votes, but D-Howitzer will probolay win like yall said.

  • matt the jazz fan Posted: Jan.9 at 11:31 am
    MVP: LeBron
    MIP: Millsap
    ROY: OJ Mayo
COY: D’Antoni or Skiles if either the Knicks or Bucks make the playoffs
    6th man: Lamar Odom
DPOY: Nicolas Batum - he’s gotta be if he’s in the starting five on a stacked team like the Blazers

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 11:33 am
Salt Lake City has some good weed.

  • Holly MacKenzie Posted: Jan.9 at 11:33 am
RUSS! OJ for ROY?! Really? Seeing you say this makes me very happy this morning.
Anyone here think it’s possible for Phil to win COY if the Lakers finish with the best record? I’d like Pop to get it, or of course Sloan but I really have no idea where this one is going.

  • Myung Posted: Jan.9 at 11:34 am
Who is this Wooden character people keep talking about?

    cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurtis

  • H to the Izzo Posted: Jan.9 at 11:43 am
The talk of Marcus Camby(which I agree with) on this post would make Cub Buenning very happy.I’d count Ben Wallace pretty much in the same ilk.

  • Z Posted: Jan.9 at 11:50 am
Izzo, Wallace was a beast in the D. As opposed to Marcus, guys were thinking about Big Ben when they were slashing to the hoop. / Allenp, you make some great points about Howard. I guess I’m just biased to bigs that are foul-prone. You’re just always afraid that they’ll pick up two quick ones in the first 5 mins of an important game. Unlike guards who can pretty much control their fouls (not reaching, not gambling), bigs can’t afford to do that. If a guy is doing work in the paint, you HAVE to protect the rim.

Great story about the high school baller with some hard times - linked at the bottom of this post. Best of luck to her

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 12:32 pm
I actually just now read that story that Holly linked. If anyone gets a chance, read it. Great, great story. That is crazy how you can just wake up one day and have that happen to you. I’ll send prayers that she fully recovers. Thanks Chris and Holly.

    Izzo
I think you’re wrong about Ben. Ben played behind Shaq in the Finals that year and wasn’t fouling out of every game.
Marcus Camby couldn’t play behind an old Shaq just last year. Ben, in his prime, was rugged in the post, and active everywhere else. He showed hard on pick and rolls, was willing to switch and guard smaller players in the crunch. Camby does neither of those things. Sure, he’s active going for blocks and certain rebounds, but nothing about his game is rugged. The Ben Wallace we see now is a broken shell of his former self, but we must not forget that when Ben was bringing it, he was a poor man’s Dennis Rodman.

  • Justin Walsh Posted: Jan.9 at 1:03 pm
Holly, you and I have had conversations at length about OJ Mayo’s ROY lock :) Everyone else on the other side just hasn’t sipped the orange juice yet :D

When Ben was still ‘Big Ben’, he wasn’t a poor man’s Dennis Rodman, he was Dennis Rodman 2.0 with less flair. Sure, the Pistons would play 4 on 5 on offense, but that is because Ben made THAT much of a difference on the defensive end and with rebounds. He was pretty dominant for 4 years.

    TAD
Nah homie, you’re slipping on Rodman. Rodman went from being an uber athlete who at 6′7″ inches could guard twos and threes and some ones, to being a chiseled power forward who gave Shaq fits.
Rodman was always better than Ben Wallace. Always. Sure, he had more craziness around him, but Ben Wallace was never as good as Rodman during his long and distinguished prime.
Rodman is arguably the greatest rebounder of all time, and he’s also one the greatest defenders of all-time. Ben Wallace is nice, but he ain’t that nice.

  • Bryan Posted: Jan.9 at 1:39 pm
Co sign on Rodman for real. Ben Wallce could block shots better so his defense stats look better but Rodman at his size is the best rebounder/defender to ever play. And although he didn’t score much he was a better scorer that Wallace.

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 1:39 pm
    Ok, 2.5 then.

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 1:40 pm
I’m a better scorer than Wallace.

  • Eboy Posted: Jan.9 at 1:55 pm
TAD didn’t try to compare vintage Ben Wallace with The Worm, did he? Really? You’re kidding, right? This is like B.Long comparing Danny Granger to Scottie Pippen last week. WTF is up with you guys?

  • Myung Posted: Jan.9 at 2:20 pm
Ben Wallace is a 4 time All Star and a 4 Time DPOY with 1 ring. Dennis Rodman is a 2 time All Star and 2 time DPOY with 5 rings. Numbers aside, I’d put Rodman a little ahead of Ben. Rodman was a lock down defender (a la Payton, Pip) and probably the best pound for pound rebounder I’ve ever seen. Wallace was a great help defender and was also a ferocious rebounder, but I think the thing that separates the two is… Rodman was a great defensive player during an era when great defense was being played. Wallace was a great defensive player when defense hasn’t been emphasized nearly as much. Just my 2 cents.

  • Myung Posted: Jan.9 at 2:24 pm
I DO think Granger has some similarities to Pippen, but he’s going to have to play for a long time and win some rings before any serious comparisons can be made. To me, the player who most resembles Pip in terms of physical appearance is Jamario Moon. Watching him in the Dunk Contest last February felt like I was watching Scottie Pippen all over again. The way he jumps and his mannerisms are eerily similar to Scottie. The game? Well, not so much.

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 2:36 pm
E: Yeah, I did. But not necessarily in that context ya’ll spoke of. In that 4 year span, Ben was pretty dominant. I know Rodman was a lock down type, but teams were also afraid to come in the paint when Ben was patrolling. Apples and oranges, really. No doubt The Worm was better, but they both shined bright in their own way. Oh, and they both donned rings wearing the Pistons blue and red! So whatever.

  • Eboy Posted: Jan.9 at 2:44 pm
Dennis was a terror from the beginning of his career until his eventual flameout…..Ben had a good 5 year run…..case closed.

  • Myung Posted: Jan.9 at 2:57 pm
I like those #3 Ultimate Warrior armbands Ben used to wear on his biceps (I’m partial to it since I was able to get one from him after a Pistons game). But I agree with eBoy; Wallace has had a unique career in that he was absolutely dominant for about 5 or 6 years in the middle of his career but was just a bench player early on and has been a below average starter, ever since his All Star run. I can’t think of too many players who had this type of career actually.

  • Bryan Posted: Jan.9 at 3:41 pm
The dpoy award are a little inflated for Wallace because of the lack of defensive talent in that span. People were scared around the paint and all but with Rodman he made the game 5 on 4 by completely taking the best frontcourt player out of the game

  • TADOne Posted: Jan.9 at 3:43 pm
Also, he f*cked Carmen Electra. That’s a win in my book.

  • BETCATS Posted: Jan.9 at 3:49 pm

Hornets take Lakers to 7 games, Spurs over Lakers in conference finals.
Cavs over Celtics in the east.
Cavs vs. Spurs re-match in the Finals.

  • B. Long Posted: Jan.9 at 5:56 pm
That’s the worst possible thing that could happen to NBA fans. Even Ryan Jones doesn’t want to see that.

  • JumpManDenver23 Posted: Jan.9 at 8:18 pm
