The Post Up: Spurs Are Solid

While Denver rolls.

by Holly MacKenzie

Happy day, everyone.

I feel like I’m inaugurated out. Today has been exhausting. The combination of my friend flying in Monday night, getting to bed around 6 a.m., waking up before 9 a.m. and then going nonstop until now, when I write this at 2 a.m. again, whooooop.

Last night was a pretty low-key night in the League and I didn’t catch much of these games. I’m sure you can all agree with me that yesterday really wasn’t about basketball.

Things will be getting back to normal tonight though, huge schedule ahead of us with Phoenix @ New York, Utah @ Houston and Cleveland @ Portland, just to name a few. I’m looking forward to seeing Steve Nash and Mike D’Antoni and of course, as I mentioned the last time the teams met each other, Dan D’Antoni and Leandro Barbosa.

Those two might have my favorite player/coach relationship in the League. Who would each of you pick?

I’m kind of still trying to wrap my head around the fact that not only are the Cavs really, really good and are still undefeated at home, but that the Orlando Magic currently have the best record in the League.

I love the unexpected parts of each season. I love that the Spurs are beginning to round into form and nip at everyone’s heels. I love that I love to hate and hate to love Manu Ginobili and everything he brings to the table. I love the Iverson cover and really, I just want to read my damn piece on Powe because I still have been unable to find a copy of the mag in this city, honestly. My mother has a copy in Nova Scotia and I still can’t find it here in Toronto.

Also, the Ariza/LeBron comments you guys left yesterday cracked me up. Even I, Laker Girl #32, cannot pretend that Riza’s got anything on Bron.

Tonight the Raptors face the Pistons and I’m excited to see a couple of things; first, how the Rip-coming-off-the-bench thing works out, and, second, how AP does at point guard if Jose is still unavailable. Also, can the Raptors please get a trade going? K, thanks, BC, appreciate it.

Thickest headband in the L.Okay… Here we go:

Atlanta 105 Chicago 102

The Atlanta Hawks earned their second victory in as many days and this one was as close as the first. One day after taking down the Raptors 87-84, the Hawks escaped with a 105-102 decision over the Bulls thanks in large part, to Mike Bibby and his 31 points. While the game was close throughout, Derrick Rose put the Bulls ahead by one, continuing to show he’s got grit and shines under pressure. Bibby showed that he too, can thrive when the game is on the line as he started a 7-0 run for the Hawks then continued to score nine of his 31 in the final minutes of the game, including a three and a steal as the Hawks closed out the Bulls. Besides Bibby, Zaza Pachulia had 18 points while Josh Smith had 17 points and 14 rebounds. The Bulls were led by Ben Gordon who scored 21 points as Luol Deng had 12 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists.

San Antonio 99 Indiana 81

While the Pacers have been doing a good job of keeping games close (not so good of a job at coming away with W’s), last night was an exception as the Spurs did what they do best and rolled to a victory in a game that was supposed to be close. Thanks to a decisive third quarter that saw the Spurs outscore Indiana 28-17, the game was over before the fourth quarter. The Spurs held Danny Granger to 17 points on 5-15 shooting while Mike Dunleavy added 15 for the Pacers. Tim Duncan had 27 points and 10 rebounds through three quarters to lead the Spurs while Manu Ginobili was a star sub with 26 points. Tony Parker added 13 points in the victory.

Utah 112 Minnesota 107

While the Timberwolves have been on an impressive streak as of late, going 8-2 over their last ten before the game last night, they were unable to slow the Jazz as Paul Millsap had a 28-point, 15-rebound performance and Mehmet Okur pulled out some big three’s to close out the game and get the W for Utah. When the TWolves got to within one in the final minutes of the game, Deron Williams set up Okur on consecutive possessions for three-pointers and he responded. Okur finished with 22 points for Utah while Williams had 17 points and 11 assists. The Wolves were led by Al Jefferson with 25 points and 8 rebounds as Ryan Gomes and Randy Foye scored 19 points apiece.

Denver 118 Sacramento 99

While the Nuggets started out slow in this one, a strong second quarter allowed them to easily roll over the Kings on their way to a laugher, defeating Sacramento, 118-99. With consecutive quarters topping 30 points, the Nuggets led by as many as 30 in the fourth as the Kings couldn’t keep up, even without Carmelo Anthony in the lineup. The Nuggets shot 56% for the game as Linas Kleiza scored 27 points off of the bench and JR Smith added 19 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists and Chauncey Billups added 22 points and 8 assists. Nene had another double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. The Kings received 25 points from Kevin Martin as Jason Thompson scored 18 points to go with 11 boards and Bobby Jackson added 15 off of the bench.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Um, that highschool offers a ton of stuff my highschool never offered. BET, you go to a private school?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

BET, you are a funny cat. maple syrup? and I thought I was wrong for giving my teacher my number on a sheet of paper that said, “bite me.” she actually wrote me up for that but what you did takes the cake ha.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

No. Its a magnet school. Do you not know what a magnet school is? They build them in ‘high risk areas’ like my neighborhood and bring all the good teachers/all the cool programs and then take aplications from people not in my district. Its a great thing.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

DP we had French Toast Sticks that dont require that stuff but come with it and i was mad. So syrrup got thrown.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

nice, bet. I as well take AP Lanuage and Composition and I was in AP us history but that women kind of irked me so I’m back in regular. Honors World History down here was a freakin joke but hey, mississippi is the worst state for education. your 3.5 might be a 4.5 down here cat.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

I hear you on that, BET. We have a magnet school in Jackson but it was made like in the 1800′s. I swear it should be made into a national historic museum.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

our school was the first intergrated school in Wake County. It is a museum (well it has a big trophy case and a wall with old plaques+history stuff)

Come on DP, dont play yourself, you doing work and i respect that.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

but we should talk about basketballin now. HOLLY? WHERE ARE YOU???

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JulsMW0rQTk nbk

why dont yall have school today?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

My mom wanted to send me to a private school down here, but I don’t want to start for a suck ass team. I would rather be the sparkplug off the bench for a playoff high school team than freakin put up 25 a game on teeny boopers.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

I have school, I’m in study hall right now.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Talent is talent, DP. You just wanted to stay in public school.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

    i got snow NBK

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JulsMW0rQTk nbk

scouts care about your competition. DP is right coming off the bench for a competitive team is almost always better then scoring 20 a game against inferior competition. But regardless if your good enough to go somewhere you will get an offer don’t stress it…….I live in phoenix that never crossed my mind BET

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

LAQUINTON ROSS=SHUT DOWN! If you are wondering who that is, that is the number one player in the class of 2001(shouts out to BET). Well last night Ross’s Murrah Mustangs got tore out of the frame by my team, the Northwest Rankin Cougars. My boy, Ife Eke(yes, he is from nigeria) went off on Ross, who is considered to be the next big thing. Ross is just long as hell and he is weaker than a toothpick. My boy Ife had 17 and 10 last night along with 3 blocks and dude is our center at 6’6. Ross is 6’9 maybe 6’10. Rivals needs to check the rankings and put my boy Eke wrong. Mississippi is about to become a hotbed for young basketball talent. oh yeah, we beat Ross and his team by 21.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

I am the best unranked player not on a team!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

me and nbk agree! I never thought I see the day! But TAD, if you were to see the comp at the school I was going to attend, you would get my point. I swear it is 1950 style ballin.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I hear you DP. It sounds like you have a good coach as well.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JulsMW0rQTk nbk

DP if your way way better then the competition then you can break a state scoring record and no matter how good the team your coming off the bench for you will never look better that having your name in record books.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

Our team is alright but there is to much beef with the seniors and juniors. I, being apart of the junior class feel that our seniors are trying to hard to get scholarships when their time has past. Sometimes, they will hog a ball in the game when a junior enters a game and beef soon follows in the locker room. If we played together I know we would be ranked in the state.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

I wouldn’t say he is a good coach, TAD. I can put up with him and vice versa. It’s all business with basketball. None of the players have a relationship with the coach like that but we ball because it’s a habit. I like nbk’s thinking…DP, scoring record at Jackson Prep. nice. haha

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP

mistake on one of my posts, Ross is the number one player in the nation of the class of 2011.

  • http://www.bbl.org.uk Josh D

I told you! At the beggining of the season everyone doubted the spurs, and everyone one was saying their dynasty was over, except from me, check the spurs season preview if you like. Spurs will win the championship in 6 over the Cs

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    Hi Josh. It’s January.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Why stop Josh from having dreams, TAD? It doesn’t stop B.Long, Ends, Myles, DP, etc all, from doing the same.

  • collin

i got school today. i live in oregon, the roads are usually icy in the morning during winter. the only way my school gets cancelled is if it snows, and that is not happening for a long time.

@josh D. spurs and cavs in the finals? what are you smokin?

  • collin

im not makin my predictions for who will be in the finals until april. it’s too damn early.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

I’m feeling Obama’s new rules on lobbyists and FOIA requests. I hope you all are too…
    Now back to basketball.

  • collin

remember when the celts started 27-2 and everyone had this feeling in the back of their head that a repeat was coming? now the celts are not even talked about anymore cause of that lapse they had. exaclty why i don’t make my real predictions til playoff time, anything can happen right now, it’s january.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

    BET
What’s your weighted GPA? And how did you do on the PSATs?

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JulsMW0rQTk nbk

why is spurs in the finals such a far fetched idea for you people……what have they lost, Duncan is actually better then he was in 07 and he is the only spurs star “on the decline” even though he is not. I don’t even see why they are not the favorites to come out of the west w/ all of LA’s defensive problems and NO’s reliance on one player.

  • collin

    @BET

    you are hilarious man

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

By playoffs yall cats will be jumping on my Cats bandwagon.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JulsMW0rQTk nbk

The nuggets, suns, rockets, jazz (they’re a little unpredictable), and mavs have almost no shot of making it out of the west.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Allen: I guess I need to venture on over to CNN.com for a moment…

  • collin

    @nbk,

i agree with you, but i just think that the laker’s speed and athleticism will be too much for the spurs to handle. spurs are still an elite team, but the lakers are too good. if LA-SA meet in the western finals or any other time in the playoffs it would probably be LA in 6. I’m not even a lakers fan. i’m a diehard blazers fan. and unfortunately i am a big bobcat fan too.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Allen: PSATS were terrible. I am not sure what i got exactly, but i just remember feeling frustrated with my math score. Everything else was good, but math was terrible. Weighted i am sitting on like a 3.9

  • collin

there are 9 good teams in the west, so 1 team will be left out. it will ether be the mavs or suns, they have got lots of unsolved problems and will just blow up sometime this year. and if the jazz can’t stay healthy they might be in trouble too.

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

What are you, a junior? Too bad about the PSATs, that’s the easiest way to go to school for free.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

No i am a sophmore. The Pre-SATS is what i thought you were refering to. It doesnt count. I take the real stuff next year.

  • collin

im a sophmore too, i got a really bad grade on that test, good thing it doesn’t count or i would be screwed

  • collin

damn i got to go back to class now

  • The Promise

In your face BET, I’m a junior.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

In my face? My face is here, you are their. Lets re-examine that claim. You are not ‘in my face’ you are ‘facing my Inn’ which is really a Tavern.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

so jokes on you ‘The Promise’. YOu have been broken; which is like a lie after a verbal agreement (a verbal agreement is another name for a promise)
