Yao Ming Has Had Just About Enough of T-Mac

by Marcel Mutoni

Earlier this week, I posted a small item about Tracy McGrady supposedly bad-mouthing teammate Yao Ming behind his back. And now, according to David Aldridge, the two are no longer on speaking terms.

Not only that, but the Rockets’ franchise center wants the chronically-injured Tracy shipped out of town on the first thing smoking. From NBA.com:

The Rockets are putting a positive spin on this, but Waiting for Tracy is a play that nobody in Houston wants to see anymore — up to and including the big man, Yao Ming.

“They don’t speak,” an extremely plugged-in person tells me. “And Yao wants him out.”

As Aldridge points out, despite Yao’s wishes, McGrady’s contract is far too bulky for teams to consider trading with Houston. So, crummy health and all, he’s likely stuck there for at least the remainder of this season and possibly the next one.

Sorry, Yao.

    Finally Yao showing some backbone!

I’m sure it takes a lot for Yao to be upset at you.

  • weedprisoner

    nah….

  • Myung

Maybe now the people in China will stop voting for T-Mac… and CP3 can make a last grasp push to get that starting spot. Then again, I think T-Mac will be unable to play, regardless (he seems to be injured 3 out of every 4 weeks of the season so there’s a good chance he’ll be out during the All Star weekend).

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Any and everyone who talked before the season about the Rockets being a serious contender, stand up now. Hold yourselves accountable. There are a f*cking lot of you. If you turn yourselves in without a struggle and admit your guilt, we’ll go easy on you.

RV ‘reported’ this yesterday on hibachi AND the post up. This makes me sad.

    Yao and me both.

  • thesubwayconnection

It sucks, but it’s frustration, and you can’t really blame anyone other than the Rockets themselves. Tracy said he’d be ready to play at this point – he’s not. Injuries have lost them something ridiculous like 70 games combined this year, and Yao wants to win. I think the Mac era is coming to a close.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Early for the bad puns, Ben.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

Yeah because Yao is not ever injured. Give me a break.

    Retire, T-Mac

  • http://www.mynameinorange.blogspot.com Hisham

CoCo, I don’t think Yao’s upset because T-Mac is injury-prone. It’s because he’s in and out of the lineup, decides not to play in back to back games and hasn’t played hard at all this year. If you’re hurt, you’re hurt. Don’t play hurt if it’s not helping your team. Focus on rehab, and stop trying to come back too soon. And please, go to the Suns’ trainers or something. They can fix him up real nice. Or retire

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Fans are not that understanding where T-Mac is concerned. He catches hell for being injured when Yao gets a pass, even though he’s played more games than Yao over the past 3 seasons. Let’s see Yao make it through this season completely healthy before he starts making trade demands for other players

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

When told of his teammates comments, Tracy McGrady said “who?”

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Co Co, you are missing the point on this one, which is: T-Mac’s a d*ck. He sh*ts on teammates to the media. He’s been doing it for years. I have no personal beef with dude, but I’ve seen him do it. Russ will co-sign, if he hasn’t already.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Also, they just tallied up the internet votes on whether Tracy should be traded or not. 1,201,046 people said no, and 2,764,809,661 said yes. It is thought that international voting may have played a role in the outcome.

  • Boston Baller

As stated somewhere above, “injuries are not the focal point here” “it’s the bad mouthing by McGrady” *(“McGrady has been privately complaining to friends in recent days about Yao taking too many shots and not being tough enough. Like McGrady has never been accused of either.”) How can you complain about shots when you are sitting in street clothes? Plus McGrady more than gets his shots WHEN he plays. Both players are hurt a lot but McGrady seems to never shut up. If he were a Celtic there would be more green venom spit his way. just kidding sort of. lol .

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

Who was he privately complainging to? And who is this extremely plugged in source that has released this trade demand by Yao. All of this could be made up. ;)

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I think Yao just sees that Tracy isn’t committed to rehabbing from his injuries and, like many in Houston, has gotten tired of the same old story. You always here about how hard Yao works, and I can understand some frustration on his part. There may be some personality conflict as well, but I imagine their “beef” starts and ends with the game.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I knew the Rockettes weren’t going the the Finals anyway.

You know Tracy has been in the league for a lot of years and maybe his body is just beyond repair. Yeah he’s still young, but he has a lot of NBA mileage on him. Plus he’s a slim lil dude maybe his body is just broken down.
And an always injured player is an always injured player and Yao of late damn sure falls into that category as well. It’s always the same old story in Houston where both of them are concerned.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

I don’t understand why everyone was picking the Rockets anyway. One of their one/two punch is always injured. Surely that’s not a secret. I mean Ron is good, but take a team from first round exit to NBA Finals good?????

  • The Seed

Rockets should trade McGrady, he is overrated, just shoots, McGrady is Durant in eight years, can shoot lights out at times, but will get hurt alot. I am glad Yao is speaking up, shows that he wants to win. McGrady is a clown who can’t get a team out of the first round, with help, so ship him to Nuggets for J.R. Smith, yes I said J.R. Smith and players.

  • Orlando Green

STFU Ming boy, you’re about to go down with an injury also. What, Yao puts a half a season together without injury and now he starts B****ing about ppl that get hurt….

  • The Seed

I mean McGrady is Durant, with injuries.

  • Orlando Green

T-mac’s trade value is close to NIL…if he gets traded to a good team like the Lakers, Celtics, Phoenix….etc..and T-mac happens to stay healthy…that team could be so fire…

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I definitely don’t see any contenders making a play for Tracy. He’s too much of a question mark health-wise and that bloated contract isn’t helping matters at all. Honestly, I want Mac to succeed, but he seems like he’s not willing to put in the extra work to get there. Talking isht about Yao isn’t a great idea either. While Yao is as injury prone as anyone, he is 7’6″ and has, by all accounts, worked his ass off to come back every time. I bet Yao is cool with Ron, largely bevcause he can see that Ron ACTUALLY CARES and is willing to put the work in.

  • http://www.mynameinorange.blogspot.com Hisham

T-Mac just has to ask Vince to go back to sucking, so that he can return to greatness. It’s obvious that they can not do well simutaneously. It’s a family hex, jinx, curse, whatever

Durant’s career will be better than Tracy’s, he has that “fire in his belly” that Mac always seemed to lack. Speaking of Durant I was SO happy to see that Thunder team get a good win, they’ve lost in a bunch of close ones. Jeff Green and Westbrook are growing up together and could form a special trio for years to come (if the Thunder are eventually able to re-sign them…)

It’s not just an injury thing. It’s an effort thing. Like when T-Mac had 3 steps on Jamario Moon and just let him stroll right past him for a dunk. That was the worst effort I’ve seen on a basketball court since…well, since VC in Toronto.

How the mighty have fallen. It wasn’t that long ago that McGrady was seen as one of the ‘elite guys, on the cover of video-games, having best-selling jerseys, being a shoo-in for the All-Star game (not including Chinese votes), now it seems he’s one of the most hated players in the NBA.

While injuries aren’t his fault, his desire seems to be seriously lacking, so it’s hard to have much sympathy. Still, after some of the playoff defeats he’s looked like he really cares, so it’s hard to judge.

My first thought: Why the hell would Yao want to trade McGrady? He can opt out next season, and with the way Houston’s going, I bet McGrady WILL opt out. Maybe this is Yao’s way of making him feel unwelcome.

Coco, even if this was really true, Yao and the rest of the rockets have enough reason to want Tmac out…yes Yao has has his share of injuries, but Tmac has been doing some inexplicable things lately. His knee isn’t injured, it’s just been almost half a year of rehab. He said he was 80% at the beginning of the season and 3 months later he can’t get that 20%? He and dcotors have said he can’t hurt it more, just needs to play through it to strengthen it, yet he’s requested 3 weeks off, only to come back early, then complain again he needs time off and won’t play back to backs. He also calls in right before games, like that Utah game he was suppose to play, called in right before, and Artest, who had been giving the day off officially, immediately dressed as soon as he found out tmac wasn’t playing. Ron later led Houston to an OT win. What does Tmac do when he actually plays? He quits on plays, doesn’t play D, doesn’t compete. Then hes got the nerve to complain about lack of shots to the media after a game. He himself knows he’s playing like crap, why would you ask for more shots then? The next game he took it back after watching game film and realizing he had opportunities and just didn’t take them. Now he wants 2 weeks off to do his normal pre season regimen and he thinks that’s what he needed all along. Personally, i can’t believe he’s going to get more benefit from 2 weeks of his own routine than he has got from 3 months of NBA workouts/practices.

And yes, i also thought Houston would be a contender, but Ryan should hold his wrath for another month or so, since houston IS only 2.5 games back of the 3rd seed, the second half of their schedule is easier than the first, Deke is back and contributes more from the bench than when he’s on the court…..if Adelman realized he needs to limit Rafer to no more than 6 or 7 shots a game, Houston would win 75% of their games.

Coco, because Tracy himself and the trainers, doctors, have all said it. It’s the rehab that’s taking time, yes he has some pain/soreness, he has weakness, but it’s not injured, it’s all part of the recovery. I can try and find the quotes if you’d like. When he first took time off this season, there was an interview where Tracy said he was taking the time off not because it got worse, but because he wasn’t happy with his play. Later, he went out during a game and didn’t come back because he had a problem with the knee, after the game he was talking like he re-injured it and talked about shutting it down…the next day he was back in practice and basically said the night before had been a fluke….just trust me on this, i follow the team pretty closely down here…i know its difficult for Tmac himself, but he’s causing disruptions all over the place. It doesn’t help that when he sits out and is on the bench, he’s not very supportive or part of the huddle. Against Boston, he looked more upset that he didn’t leadd the team to that win, rather than just being happy the team pulled it off, which i guess is good in a way, but he’s got to show some leadership…

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

I don’t think Tracy will ever win a title. Because of his epic first-round struggles, it seems to me that his… ceiling, the height of his ambitions, has been set much lower now. He’s still got the ability, but that killer instinct scorer who’d nail shots from anywhere with a hand in his face seems to be history. It didn’t just happen this year, all of a sudden, either. A season or two ago, he was already talking about wanting to be a “facilitator” on the Rockets instead of their go-to scorer. Which is bull, since he’s the only guy who can really create his own shot at will on the wing.

  • Myung

I think when we look back at T-Mac’s career, this might be his obituary: Never carried his team in the playoffs (especially while on the Magic), had a nice showing in the 2000 Dunk Contest, had a tremendous ability to throw the ball to himself off the glass (particularly during All Star games), had some pretty decent looking patent leather signature kicks in the early 00′s before getting lost in the mix at adidas, bears a striking resemblance to Steve Urkel (sans glasses), had an amazing 35 seconds in a game vs. the Spurs and had a nasty dunk over Shawn Bradley in a playoff game, peaked early in his career and suffered through an injury riddled career the rest of the way…

  • Bballrehab

Come on, T-Mac may have his flaws, but when healthy he is without any doubt one of the leagues’s 5 best players. Yao? Gotta be the most overrated player ever in this league. Less than 20 points per game, less than 10 rebounds and the guy can’t jump to save his life…geez even Gasol, without being the first option in his team, has similar stats. Centers are a rare breed nowadays, that’s why he has been an all-star all this years; in the 80′s and the 90′s he wouldn’t have been an all-star one single time.

  • lakers4life

I KNEW HOUSTON’S GONNA IMPLODE SOONER OR LATER, BUT WHAT SURPRISES ME IS IT’S NOT BECAUSE OF RON ARTEST.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

T-Mac could absolutely still win a title, but he will absolutely not win a title as the best player on his team.

  • Myung

I just looked up his career stats. T-Mac had a REALLY nice run from 2000 to 2007 (other than 2005-06, when he played just 47 games). From what I can see, he’s still 29, but it looks he peaked at age 23 or 24 and hasn’t been the same since 27. A lot of stars hit their prime in their late 20′s, but I’m not sure if he hasn’t already passed his. I guess we’ll see when it’s all said and done.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

The way everyone acts Yao has been the best player on that team anyway Ryan so his title hopes should still be very much alive in Houston. ;)

  • Myung

Bballrehab, I might have been a little harsh on him, but I think I might have to disagree with you on that (top FIVE?). Off the top of my head, these are players I’m pretty sure are better than T-Mac: Kobe, LeBron, Dwight, Chris Paul, Joe Johnson, KG, Duncan, Deron, Granger, Al Jefferson, Brandon Roy, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh… even Yao and Vince. I’m sure I could probably come up with at least 10 more if given another minute.

Myung, Ron Artest explained it perfectly about a week ago, he said Tmac relies too much on pure talent and thinks thats enough to get things done and often forgets he needs to put in hard work/practice. I think that’s 100% true. I know his game is based on athleticism, but it shouldn’t be an excuse for him to no longer play at a high level. Who would Kobe be if he didnt put in the extra time to polish moves, to create moves? He’d be tmac, and would have started to go downhill around this time as well. If you think about it, Tmac doesn’t have one real move that’s based more on technique rather than his ability to jump high or have length. His jumper is nothing without the height he gets on it. He could get by very well on pure athleticism in the past, now he’s figuring out he can’t keep doing it.

Bballrehab….please learn more than stats when discussing basketball…It’s very convenient of you to say yao can’t even average 20 and when he’s only .5 and .7 away from it. Yao isn’t going to average 14 boards a game like say, dwight, because he’s got good rebounders around him. Howard has a small forward as his power forward. Gasol didn’t even average more than 10 when he WAS the go to guy, so he’s a bad example.. As for scoring, Yao SHOULD be the number one option on the team, but he’s not, at least not consistently. When he is he’s likely to put almost 30 and 12. his problem is not having the attitude that someone like Shaq has. Shaq would demand the ball and refs didn’t know how to ref him either, but Shaq just dunked it on guys. Yao doesn’t demand and isn’t mean enough to dunk on guys consistently, so he doesn’t get the ball and when he does he’s often ref’ed incorrectly.

  • Harlem_World

TMac quits on his team, this is well known. He is also soft as tissue paper. Damn shame, because when he first got to Orlando, he was ballin. Despite all the raptor hate, Vince is better and has had a better career.

  • Harlem_World

And the difference between yao and tmac is, Yao is top 2 at his position right now, Tmac is a LONG way of top 2 anything.

The “extremely plugged in person” is most likely the security guy who stands in the corner of the locker room who doesn’t know jack sh!t. But probably not, I’m just saying that the source isn’t confirmed here.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

I like how no one reads the comments or else they would realize there’s no credibility to this….shaq/kobe part II, but without any real evidence, quotes and therefore 0 credibility…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

I respect and understand the anonymous-source scrutiny here — we should be leery anytime a source is unnamed — but let’s look at the guy reporting it: David Aldridge has got a pretty strong rep, and at this point in his career, he’s got much more motivation to NOT report this if it’s not legit than he does to make some sh*t up or quote someone who probably doesn’t know what they’re talking about. Good reporters make a point of knowing peripheral people who most fans have never heard of, but who are nonetheless plugged in. I don’t know DA beyond having been cordial with him at games, but generally speaking, you don’t get a good rep in this business over a couple decades without legitimately being pretty good at your job. If DA has a source he trusts enough to have run with this, it probably happened.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

But Ryan, RV is saying it just isn’t true!

I just read that, Allen. It’s not the 1st time someone on SLAMonline has made a racist comment and sadly, won’t be the last. I feel sorry for people who have to resort to such pathetic methods of making a point.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Tad, i’m actually saying what yao himself said. So Yao is my source, DA’s is …?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

Allen & Myung: Noted. Hoping something is done about that shortly.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Ryan, i’ve definitely heard the argument that DA doesn’t just throw rumors around without having a credible source, BUT, that doesn’t mean the source could have taken something out of context or misheard something. Do i believe Yao is upset, frustrated, etc. Yeah. Does he probably wish Tmac could be traded for Danny Granger, rashard lewis, in other words, a similar type of player who’s actually healthy? Yeah, but I don’t think it’s a case where Yao is actively asking for Tmac to be traded and is purposely not speaking to him like this article suggests. I’ve heard yao speak enough to know his english is still spotty and his one liners often are harsher or stronger than what he means, so this could be no more than Yao blurting something out after a tough loss in which tmac sat out or didn’t play well.

  • Myung

Appreciated, Ryan, but I’m not sure if I’m more offended as an Asian by the “slant” comment or as a basketball fan by his opinion.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

also, If Yao danced around the question or he was someone like shaq who’s been known to flip flop his position, then I’d be more inclined to believe DA’s source and think Yao’s spitting some PR bull, but yeah specifically said it’s not true and there’s no reason to think he’s not being honest, so i’ll believe Yao over DA for now.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Yao addressed the “feud” in today’s practice, link awaiting moderation…to summarize for those who don’t want to watch the clip….he basically said everything is ok b/t him and tracy, that’s the report is untrue, that its the effect of having another injury filled season, rumors will always start when things are going well like they did in the summer, that they keep team things internally and if something like that was said it wouldn’t leave the team anyway, but that in this case its fake…

So, Yao said “It’s not true. But, if it was true I wouldn’t be telling you anyway. But, its not true.” So either way, he’ll say it’s not true. I think the Ron Ron comment about Tracy relying on natural abi8lity is te real clincher. Thats the issue. not that he’s hurt, but that he hasn’t done enough to get back. Mac never worked hard to rehab after his series of injuries and thus has never returned to what he was as a player. Meanwhile he’s still getting P-A-I-D, and Yao knows that.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

he said something like that wouldn’t get leaked out, not that he wouldn’t admit it if specifically asked….and there was a post on a houston forum where someone claims their sister rehabbed in the same facility as tmac and shane and battier seemed focused while tmac was gooofing most of the time, again not very credible though…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

T Mac is soft and yes Yao can talk. He’s led that team this year. Aaron Brooks and Scola have helped a bit but it’s Yao’s team now. Rockets need to just get like the wizards and blow it for the lottery. Maybe if Mac would take a nap he’d stay healthy.

Also I think I remember in a certain issue with an article on T-mac saying Houston was a serious contender?
    hmmm

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

    Hey everyone,

I know there’s been a lot of talk out there about problems between me and Yao, most of which began with the article on NBA.com. Normally I don’t get concerned or involved with all that, and don’t want to respond to each false rumor or accusation that ends up somewhere on the internet or on a talk radio show, however the article by David Aldridge struck a nerve. The accusations in the article about me and Yao having problems and Yao wanting me out of Houston are just plain ridiculous. Yao and I have a great relationship. We are not only teammates, we are friends. Yao’s personally told me that the info in the article is untrue, and we both feel that it’s another example of the media trying to divide our locker room and create something out of nothing. Aren’t there enough real stories out there to report on?

So to all the Rockets fans out there, there’s no need to worry about problems in the locker room and between players. We’re all tight and we are all focused on our goal, and that is to bring a championship to Houston.

And next time David Aldridge, get your facts straight.

So China will stop with the All Star votes, voting him in, even injured just like his cousin. Now if such a trade even goes through at all, there’s a chance Vince gets a big Euro cash (which is just as good as) money deal and he’s finally off the All Star ballot for this 8 year later dunk contest hangover with the fans (we know Devin Harris has a bigger claim to All Star this year than Vince). But the main reporting man DA says on NBA TV in those “The Beat” segments he doesn’t care about it anyway, the All-Star game. Exhibition, fan game. But the injured Rockets team was prefaced in that segment about top 10 all their starters in voting.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

WTF are you talking about Blinguo?

(protip:that ain’t T-Mac’s real blog, bet on it) Social networking sites and those scene kids and vampires probably vote for T-Mac/Vince Carter into the All Star game too when he plays only as much as 15-20 total games during an injured season. Jerks. Trade T-Mac = no more China votes = no more All Star starting spot when he’s injured half a season or more.

t-mac’s a bum….him and arenas are two of adidas’ finest always hurt players….never been dependable, so why the big contracts?? and houston will never go anywhere in the playoffs as long as they have those terrible jerseys…change the jerseys, you might have a chance. but yao is soft anyway so basically they’re nothing.
