Abruptly, the Amare Stoudemire Trade Derby May Have Ended

by Marcel Mutoni

Well, that was a big waste of time for everyone now, wasn’t it?

ESPN and The Arizona Republic both have reports out today claiming that the Phoenix Suns are no longer interested in trading away their star power forward. This, after weeks of breathless stories about which new city STAT was going to live and work in:

There are suddenly strong signals emanating from the desert that the coaching change announced Monday by the Phoenix Suns will be the only big personnel change they make this week.

[...]

“I got the impression today that [the Suns] are standing pat,” said one source with knowledge of the team’s thinking. Said another source close to the situation: “That is very accurate.”

Fair enough.

So, the Suns are looking at it like a 31-game season — at breakneck pace! Now that Phoenix is supposedly keeping him, and bringing back their old offense, I wonder if they’ve dealt with Amare’s deep desire to be “the man”. Because they might want to look into that.

  • J-O

oh and as a laker fan i wanted to see this trade happen for those two years we lost to them in the playoffs

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Thursday is still not here yet. I’m betting Kerr will blink.

  • John

if he ever learns to play defense (a la Carmelo Anthony) he will be a great player, although I don’t think trading him would have brought positive results

hopefully they can right the ship…

Are you saying that Melo plays D or that he has to learn to play D? The latter, right?

And just because I want to see the world burn, there is this rumor today from the Chicago Sun-Times:
    -
The Amare Stoudemire trade talk still has the Bulls among the teams most involved, but a new scenario making the rounds has the Bulls taking part in a three-team deal that would bring Toronto Raptors star Chris Bosh to Chicago. The rumored swap would send Stoudemire to Toronto and land the Phoenix Suns a package of players and draft picks from the Bulls, likely to include Drew Gooden and his expiring $7.2 million contract, Tyrus Thomas and a first-round pick. (Chicago Sun Times)

I don’t put any stock whatsoever in that rumor, but it just seemed dumb enough to post.

If true, I’m not surprised. Gentry is rumoured to be high on keeping Amare, and run ‘n’ gun makes Amare’s lack of D much less of an issue. As for his need to be the main man, could this suggest that Shaq is the one on the block instead?

  • slamfan4life

There goes chi’s chances of the play-offs

  • Andy

It’s not too late for an Amare trade though…any chance of SLAM trading his blog and the rights to future first-time commentators for one by Dwight Howard?

  • http://www.nba.com JE

Ever since the report during All-Star weekend that Alvin Gentry promised to bring back 7 seconds or less, my hopes skyrocketed that they would keep Amare. Here’s to hoping that’s how it plays out. By the way, did anyone else read that Shaq to LA scenario that Marc Stein keeps pitching?

“nooooooooooooooooooooooooo,” says this Pistons Fan. :(

I read this joke somewhere online… it was about Amare learning to play D like CARMELO! yeah, had to stifle a pig laugh at that gem! Melo, Defense…har de harrr

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

    pig laugh?

  • John

melo doesn’t play D this year?

    i disagree with you.

  • MeloMan13

i think john ment that Melo has learned to play defense better than in the past..

  • John

exactly! i think he has put an effort towards playing better defense than in the past.

amare needs to get on it

  • donlaker

alvin you have nash ,hill amare, richardson, and shaqtus big caqtus and some other role players, get the running thang going again, and sprinkle it with some inside outside, for your shooters
and mash the west, with this team you guys have ,
even terry porter could have coached them(oops i guess not)so alvin put your track shoes on and hold practice ,shaq the jabberwookie will be there
and he wont tune you out like the team did porter.

  • donlaker

amare , just pretend you are dwight howard every defensive possesion…….

  • https://twitter.com/Neuronautuk mat smith

Good, Amar’e will be beastly from now, go Suns!

  • Jess

they would be crazy to trade STAT…

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

i thought nba trade mantra has always been “never trade young for old, never trade big for small”. i’ve been hoping Suns weren’t stupid enough to do that.

  • http://allanzuss@yahoo.com Mendel

Shaq to Lakers = endless heart warming stories all the way to the championship

  • John

If they didn’t have Mihm, Gasol & Bynum I could see him going back.

Maybe if they get rid of Mihm (not sure of his contract status) then Shaq will go back there, although I am not sure if his ego will allow for the pay cut.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

so what kind of trade do Lakers proposed to make shaq a Laker again? this is gonna be hilarious.

  • Cizzo

    So what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

Cavs will get him in 2010

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

This is exactly what I assumed was going to be the case – you can certainly make Amare a happy camper again by putting him in a position to get the ball more and have a real chance of dominating the other PF’s around the league. Porter, for all his good intentions wanted this team to be a ‘face-less’ PISTONS style unit, with 5 guys scoring 16-18 pts and taking about 11 shots each…really though, you get Amare and Richardson running (if he’s not sitting in a jail cell somewhere….), Nash moving freely up and down, Barbosa will benefit too… And really, look at Shaq – the allstar game showed he can play up tempo (even if its just 11 mins a game…).

  • Diesel

Some news sources are saying Kerr’s comments were made just to put some pressure on the trade offers since they weren’t in a position of power before…having to get below the salary cap. Now if he makes it look like they’re not interested in trading Amare, maybe other team’s offers will get more aggresive.

  • JESSEG

Suns fans are ready to attack Kerr and Sarver if they trade him for garbage I’ll tell you that right now.

  • http://www.slamonline.com baller2w1

so yea im a huge fan of the suns, but come on if amare goes to toronto in that hole 3 way deal that is SH*T, the raptors would become a major contender then…marion, amare i would bet that nash will end up there nxt season or in 2010 when his contract is up. amare needs to stay in a suns uniform!

  • kingofsota

TAD if thats true, i will thank the Lord almighty for bringing Chicago a low-post presence. I believe in Kerr… and his poor trading abilities!

  • Phoenix Son

Amare is vital to the team, not only being the most talented on the squad but getting rid of him is basically telling Suns fans that they’re done trying for the next 3 or so years.
