Amar’e Stoudemire Out 2 Months

by Ryne Nelson

The Suns are reporting that Amar’e Stoudemire underwent successful eye surgery this morning to repair a partially detached retina. He was poked in the eye during his 42-point outburst against the Clippers this past Wednesday. Not a good season for the SLAM blogger’s eyes, to say the least. The Suns will have a tough time making a Playoff push with Shaq still sitting out back-to-backs and the team getting used to a new coach.

Whoa. Dam, they were beginning to get their swag back. This could mean they miss the playoffs altogether. What a bummer.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

HOLY SH!T! Man, that is terrible news for the Suns. As a Spurs fan, they are my sworn enemy, but I feel bad for Amare, and the whole team really. You could see in those first two games with Gentry how bad they want to show that they can still get up and down like nobody else, this is going to make that a lot more difficult.

    Dunleavey is behind this…..

  • Andrej

wow my fantasy team is dead no chance of winnin it ecsiesially if garnett is out

yeah, this absolutely sucks. I went NUTS when I first found out. I hit up Ryne IMMEDIATELY. Like back to the future immediately. Like I hopped in the Delorean and warned Mcfly immediately! “MARTY….IT’S YOUR POWER FORWARD…HE HAS A PARTIALLY DETACHED RETINA”…and then the ball was rolling. This seriously sucks for PHX. First, we called them dumb for considering to trade Amare…Now we call PHX dumb for not trading him, because either way they probably don’t get in the playoffs, and at least if he was traded they would have gotten something for him. Meanwhile Nash gets older, Shaq gets even OLDER, Grant Hill ages….The PHX window is all but closed.

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

Imagine if they had traded him….yikes!!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

So, why did he stop wearing the goggles in the first place?

  • Keith

Could someone explain to me why Marion was hated for his moaning about never being the centre of attention on the Suns and when Amar’e did the same, nobody mentioned how selfish he was being or how much of a moaner he was?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Justin Walsh

TAD, he had mentioned not liking the glare, the sweat and the cloggged view of the goggles.

  • kingofsota

this is punishment to kerr from God for not trading amare.

  • kingofsota

but all my hope goes out to amare, hopefully this is just a one time incident as he is a great player

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I wondered the same thing TAD.
Is there any chance he could be back in less than 2 months? Its not like a knee or ankle injury where he wouldn’t be able to move around. I mean, play with a freakin eye patch if thats what it takes.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

The Suns have partially detached playoff chances.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

    Ouch, Russ.

  • Michael

should have more time for his blog then

  • Bulldog

By the time I get to Phoenix – they’ll be DONE.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Justin Walsh

ciolkstar, partially detached retina’s are a serious thing, eyepatch or not, what if a finger hits it while its healing? eeeeek

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

    Holy eye patch!

  • http://docfunk.blogspot.com Doc Funk

Does depth perception really matter for someone who scores exclusively from the semi-circle?

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Doc Funk: yes. / If I were in charge in PHX, I’d demand that he wears goggles for the rest of his career in the desert. That’s some serious ish.

  • http://docfunk.blogspot.com Doc Funk

@Z, didn’t intend to trivialize the situation. I would, however, go a step further and make him wear the Horace Grant goggles for maximum protection.

  • donlaker

now is the time for shaqtus to step up, and cover for popeye..and play like he did in the all star game

  • http://thepaintedarea.blogspot.com/2009/02/quick-fernando-martin-note.html nbk

He said he could not wear the goggles because it blurred his vision and the sweat hurt his eyes…..I bet fingers hurt more

  • http://phoenixsunsrising.blogspot.com/ Hersey

This was a turd in my corn flakes. Suns die hards still have faith but it’ll take someone like J-Rich stepping his game up. Leaning on Shaq, Nash and Hill is a bit much given their age but let’s see how it plays out.

Lots of injuries in the West: Stoudemire, Boozer, Terry, McGrady, Chandler, Blake and Webster, Ginobili and Bynum. Every team (with the exception of Denver) is missing a guy they need to qualify or advance.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Thats a good point Hersey (Hawkins?) It feesl like there have been a ton of injuries to big time players on the top teams this season. Add Delonte, and KG in the East to the list you just mentioned (and Denver had to deal with Melo breaking a bone in his hand)

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

didn’t he already have this earlier this year or last year, or was that Marion??

  • http://www.nba.com JE

Damn, maybe they should have traded after all.

  • http:www.myspace.com/linkstigatorkevin Kevin Wilson

If he had been traded, might have failed his physical anyway.

  • NJ4Life

ironically, i feel like now the suns have to rely on shaq more than ever, thus slowing them down just when they were starting to play uptempo again.

  • Phil B

blake is back… oden is out (on a day to day basis)… net -10 for the blazers.

  • http://myspace.com/bodiebarnett jbn74sb

Get their swag back? They played the f-cking Clippers. Twice.

  • http://www.bbaxn.com Darksaber

wow. Utterly devastating news. Them suns sure have some bad karma, all the whining is manifesting itself in strife & injuries. Much as i lost a lot of respect for stat this season (yet another malcontent superstar), this is quite bad for the suns. Guess it’s ponytail amundsen’s turn to shine.

  • http://phoenixsunsrising.blogspot.com/ Hersey

Trading Amare would have meant giving up on this season and the foreseeable future. If the team can outplay Houston, Utah or Dallas down the stretch, they could get an rested (and out of shape) Amare back for the playoffs.

ciolkstar, i think all the injuries means we’ll could have teams in playoff seeds that don’t reflect how good they are. Which will give us awesome first round matchups or a sleeper team getting hot and riding it to the conference finals.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

aren’t the Suns still on the outside looking in? they ain’t making playoffs for sure now. i just don’t see the team rallying without the focal point of their offense (no pun intended, seriously). that’s a tragedy for realz.

  • Blinguo

Don’t (nobody) play the Clippers – they of the already ended a long time ago season will end your star player’s season in a fluke/freak accident. Crazy this didn’t happen to Louis Amundson. Amare should have consulted Cap/Horace Grant/even Rip Hamilton on extreme conditions eyewear on court.

What the hell!!! I feel sick! Can we just forfeit the season? What else can go wrong with this Suns franchize? Who would have ever thought we would be wishing for freaking Boris Diaw to still be on our team? Seriously who is going to fill in for him?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

god damm that must have hurt

  • Blinguo

I didn’t mean to imply Amundson is a star player, its just we saw him get Ned Ryerson’d by Z-Bo. Even if they get back to lightspeed pace, they’ll be broken down exhausted in 2 months when Amare is ready and Shaq will be Kryptonite’d and lifeless.

  • bike

Never understood why more, or even all, players don’t wear protective eyeware. Imagine some NBA beast, like Shaq or LeBron, jamming their six-inch digit into your eyeball full force. Makes me wanna cry thinking ’bout it. Sheesh.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Yeah, Hersey. I’m praying the Lakers get to see a healthy Jazz or Suns team in the first round and the Spurs get to pick off the Mavs.

  • http://blogs.myspace.com/originadro witness

this definitely takes the suns out of the equation. theyre schedule looks pretty rough. but who is gonna replace him now that boris is gone? the west os looking pretty bad compared to the east nowadays.

  • http://phoenixsunsrising.blogspot.com/ Hersey

I think every non-Laker fan is hoping they get the toughest draw in history. I’d hate to see the Lakers in the first round. They’re the lion and the Suns are the limping antelope in that scenario.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

IF the suns miss the playoffs and win the lottery….ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh CHAMPIONSHIP

  • http://allanzuss@yahoo.com Mendel

ohhhhhhhhhhhh No rookie = championship there first year

Amre with one eye has to be better then the white guy with a black eye

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

dallas, heres your chance to not only make the playoffs but attempt to defeat the heavily favored no 1 seed.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

your crazy mendel. If they get a good small forward that can give Grant Hill some relief and contribute, they are winning the whole damm thing.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

    aaaah…. fraggedly sharrtlist!!

I wish Diaw was here…. Mr Admundson….PLEASE GET REAL GOOD REAL QUICK!!!! HE could start and average a double double the rest of the way…

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

    Hey…NEd….Ned Ryerson..?!?!? CAPPOW!

    CAN YOU LIKE…..undo a trade…?

  • http://phoenixsunsrising.blogspot.com/ Hersey

BETCATS, if the Suns win the lottery and land Blake Griffin, that would be sick. There’s some Powerball odds of that happening though.

  • MalevolentKing7242

See I live in texas and normaly I dont like pheniox come playoff time but still. It was like the glove and rainman looking at nash and amare…

Did you see the last foul of paul last night? Terrible call – should have been on kobe. Bryant clearly pushed paul… Ahh – I needed to say this!

  • andy

nooooooo, amare is one of my fav players… hope he comes back soon. :(

  • MalevolentKing7242

Hmmm whos going to sign with PHX? Shaq is good but he sits out some games and amudson cannot do amres job.. Time for Shaq to put on that dusty Superman cape somewhere in his closet..

  • Kevin K

@ KEITH : How about some common sense there buddy. Shawn Marion is a ROLE PLAYER. a ROLE PLAYER. you get it? a ROLE PLAYER. When do you ever hear a ROLE PLAYER complaining and whining about not getting enough shots or being the center of attention (unless you are Larry Hughes).

  • Andy

Dropping another 140 on OKC, then hanging 108 on the Celtics (albeit losing 128 themselves)? It’s not exactly terrible. Let’s see how the next couple of weeks pan out, before we sound the death knell.
