Breaking: J.O to Miami, Marion to Toronto

by Marcel Mutoni

And just like that, All-Star weekend is off with a bang.

According to this ESPN report, Miami and Toronto have just traded the two guys whose names had been swirling in trade rumors all season:

The Toronto Raptors have agreed to send Jermaine O’Neal and Jamario Moon to the Miami Heat in exchange for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks, league sources told ESPN The Magazine’s Ric Bucher.

The deal is pending league approval, according to sources, and if approved, would be announced later Friday afternoon.

Neither guy was particularly long for their respective city, so this isn’t exactly a surprise.

In Toronto’s case, they get rid of O’Neal (whose tenure up north has been nothing short of disastrous), and Marion comes off the books this summer. O’Neal, if healthy, will be asked to provide the Heat with the inside presence they desperately need in their postseason push.

Thoughts?

I hope the Heat organization is busy reinforcing the back of the rims on there nets, because JO’s jumper will be beating them up pretty bad.

good trade for miami! it frees up the beast!

    NEWSFLASH: Calderon=\=Nash, Toronto=\=Phoenix
CONCLUSION: Marion will still suck. Miami got the better of this, because when healthy JO is a beast, and Marion is consistently…marginal. And I’d take moon over banks anyday.

    “Newsflash”?

Honestly, not a bad trade for both teams. Addresses what was lacking – rebounding for the Raps, a true pivot for the Heat. Very good pickup for the Heat ‘cuz JO was better than his stats suggest, and he was a good citizen in his too-short stint here with the Raps. Marion… we really will have to wait and see about him. But if he can average a double-double I say the Raps do what they can to keep him, and keep him on the floor as much as possible, whatever position.

another oneal in miami!!!!!! Marion is really going to help toronto

Also, Calderon =/= Nash, but Nash =/= Calderon either. Nash is pure brilliance when he gets a chance to let loose and run a team. Calderon simply doesn’t make mistakes. Go ahead and compare them if you’d like; outside of skin colour, they share nothing in terms of playing style, temperament, strengths and weaknesses.

    *whatever the position*.

This trade could work out for our Raptors. The season hasn’t so far, but it’s not JO’s fault. He put it on himself and didn’t complain publicly. He’ll have a fresh start in Miami with them heading to the playoffs.
Marion could be a nice fit with this team, maybe even next year. Hopefully Marcus Banks won’t just be an unwanted contract in the next couple years. The raps should just stick with getting Roko Ukic some playing time and see him develop a bit.

For the record, I’m with Russ and the Bulls.

  • CHE

I think both teams got the short end of the stick if that is even possible..

O’neal has problems with staying healthy so Miami is really taking a risk,

Toronto better hope Marion stays long enough to make a difference. But I think he will make more of a contribution than O’neal will.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

riggs is mad because BranGor sonned him.

Jermaine still has game but needs to get completelyt healthy to be effective. he still has spurts. and Marion is good all over the place, just needs to be given the chance

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com.dacre Dacre

Phx should resign Marion next year… and sod Kerr off…

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com.dacre Dacre

Talking about JO getting healthy though…its a wonder that he doesn’t go to PHX and get some of the best sports medicine in the world on offer… they turned O’neal around 360 degrees….. DOING CHIN UPS ON THE HOOP DAMN IT!!

Ughhh, another worst kept secret in the NBA is finalized. whoopie! :(

  • L33tSauce08

No Dacre, Shaq is just a big baby who only plays when he feels like it. Marion benefited more from D’Antoni than Steve Nash. His game was in the fast break, not by having a good point (Not saying Nash isn’t a beast). Nash himself played best under D’Antoni. Watch the Knicks during the 2010-2011 season when D’Antoni has possibly an even better team then he ever had in PHX.
