Can the Hornets Afford to Keep CP3?

Some don’t think they can: “So, put yourself in Paul’s shoes for a second. (No, you don’t get his paycheck.) He’s the face of the franchise. He signed an extension that could keep him in New Orleans until at least the summer of 2012. Yet the franchise is looking to trade away basketball assets for financial assets. What happens if Paul becomes convinced the Hornets don’t have the capacity to field a competitive team? He might already have come to that conclusion. He’s going to want out, right? So while we focus on the free agent class of 2010, keep an eye on things in the Big Easy. I don’t think teams are going to have to wait until 2012 to make a pitch for Chris Paul.”

I hate these kinds of stories. Just let Hornet fans be happy for a while.

  • Mendel Posted: Feb.25 at 11:03 am
If they can’t keep him they should just shut down.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 11:03 am
He’d look good in wine and gold.

  • Moose Posted: Feb.25 at 11:22 am
    As much as I love Rondo . . .

  • Doc Funk Posted: Feb.25 at 11:29 am
Chris Paul will have ascended directly into point guard heaven well before 2012.

  • Josh D Posted: Feb.25 at 11:42 am
CP3 wouldn’t be the same without the Hornets

  • Roy Posted: Feb.25 at 12:08 pm
    Co-sign Ryan Jones… :D

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.25 at 12:30 pm
Please. The Hornets would assign him their whole salary cap and fill out the rest of the roster with D-Leaguer’s if they had to.

  • thesubwayconnection Posted: Feb.25 at 12:40 pm
And they’d still win 40 games with that, TAD.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Feb.25 at 12:58 pm
Thats kinda the point TAD. Will Paul stay if he knows he’s not going to get any help?

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.25 at 1:13 pm
Don’t bring common sense into this, ciol.

Is basketball a business about putting out a winning product? I’m starting to have problems believing that with the way the Hornets were ready to give away Tyson Chandler and how the Grizzlies got rid of Gasol.

If the economy stays this way, how long until we see teams start folding? Actually, i think it would help the NBA if contraction happend. There are too many teams as it is..

  • niQ Posted: Feb.25 at 2:22 pm
as much as i love calderon…

  • Z Posted: Feb.25 at 2:53 pm
Mo, it was good while it lasted…

  • the baconator Posted: Feb.25 at 3:03 pm
They’d have to keep him. First off, no way in hell do they get rid of him. But even if they were to, who’d be his replacement? There’s not a single player in the NCAA that is close to his caliber, nor is there a free agent that could come even close to his level of play. This “rumor” is bullsh*t, plain and simple

If he is signed through 2012, is there something I’m missing? Like a player option in 2010?

  • Sebastian B. O. Bunionstow, esq. Posted: Feb.25 at 3:25 pm
There isn’t a player option until 2012. Perhaps a trade beforehand but that’s it. CP3 will be in the Big Easy until 2012 otherwise.

  • Young Chris MP3 Posted: Feb.25 at 4:45 pm
Dude could very well end his career as the greatest Point Guard of all time. No player with that potential should be let go, I don’t care what the economy is like.

  • Kevin Posted: Feb.25 at 6:05 pm
If they let him go they’ll have people from the 3rd Ward to 17th, from Magnolia up to Melpomenne all the way to St.Bernard standing outside the Hornets front office they better resign him the best way they can, a Chris Paul dont come along every year

  • Melo&JR2daRaptors Posted: Feb.25 at 8:14 pm
Chauncy has been an all star but…

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Feb.25 at 8:38 pm
Are you serious? This “financial crisis” is getting ridiculous. I don’t care what the Hornets have to do to keep Paul, but they should do it.
The Hornets – Chris Paul = Miami Heat last year – Dwayne Wade.
    You catch my drift.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Feb.25 at 8:39 pm
    Haha nie one @ niQ.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Feb.25 at 8:40 pm
Knicks should get Paul in addition to LeBron James.

  • Bostwik Posted: Feb.25 at 8:45 pm
He’d look good in Purple and Grey. But let the hornets fans enjoy it for a while, they just got their team back after the hurricane.

  • CP34MVP Posted: Feb.25 at 10:13 pm
Chris Paul to OKC! -Wild Idea-

  • KozmicKid Posted: Feb.25 at 10:30 pm
If he moved to Chicago. CP3 in the one gaurd and Derrik Rose moves to two! I’m just sayin… NICE!

  • master2 Posted: Feb.25 at 10:35 pm
purple and grey is wack. now purple and gold that is pure class, nba royalty. so mr. fisher its been a great run, u brought us 3 titles(maybe 4 or 5 by then)but…

  • chintao Posted: Feb.26 at 1:00 am
Let’s hope Donnie Walsh can work his dark arts, while the Hornets’ front office falls asleep at the abacus.

  • NBA-JERSEY-KING Posted: Feb.26 at 3:50 am
Chris Paul should have been picked at No.2 by Atlanta….

  • Matt Posted: Feb.26 at 8:21 am
Why do you rain on New Orleans parade when Chris Paul isnt even leaving for ahwile. Just enjoy him playing for the Hornets. Fans dont wanna hear all the negative financial crap

  • kingofsota Posted: Feb.26 at 9:02 am
i know rodney stuckey has potential, but still…

  • [...] Start saving now Presti. If CP3 wants out of NOLA, then I recommend trying to get him: “Some don’t think they can: “So, put yourself in Paul’s shoes for a second. if they get rid of CP3, they get rid of the Hornets, and the GM will get fired along with the owner
