In Chicago, the Assistant Coaches are to Blame

by Marcel Mutoni

To the growing (and vocal) legion of Bulls fans who are calling for Vinny Del Negro’s head, I’ve got some bad news for you: Better get used to him as your team’s head coach. That’s the word on the street in the Chi.

After team chairman Jerry Reinsdorf appropriately termed this season a “disaster” on Friday morning and called for a meeting with the rookie coach, some thought it was a sign of looming change. Not so, according to Reinsdorf.

The problem, it seems, is with Vinny’s staff. From the Daily Herald:

“How many coaches do we have?” Reinsdorf asked. When the reporter answered one, Reinsdorf countered by saying, “No, we don’t. You know what I’m saying?”

Of course, the Bulls have several assistant coaches and brought two former NBA coach of the year winners, Del Harris and Bernie Bickerstaff, to help with Del Negro’s introduction to coaching. Reinsdorf didn’t offer any details about what problems he might have with the assistants. The feeling around the team is management wanted Harris and Bickerstaff to do more to help Del Negro evolve into a head coach.

Though the same can’t be said for his assistants, Vinny’s job appears to be safe.

He has a lot to learn – like, for instance, not forcing his players to attend a Super Bowl part that he’s hosting – and upper management seems willing to let him do just that. You’ll just have to do the same, Bulls fans. Them’s the breaks.

can’t we all just agree to fire everybody?

Stop placing blame elsewhere; the players need to be accountable. When was the last time you saw a coach make a basket? This society is all about placing blame on others – Man up!

Bill Wennington is rolling over in his grave. Randy Brown is rolling over in his grave. Scott Burrell is rolling over in his grave. Craig Hodges is rolling over in his grave. Jerry Sloan is rolling over in his grave. Scott Williams is rolling over in his grave. You get the point. Embarrassing.

Someone needs to get Derrick Rose to NY ASAP. Imagine Rose playing in New York’s system.

Henry Abbott get out of bed!!!

Why the Bulls would bring in a rookie head coach with absolutely no experience to lead a team that is supposedly a playoff contender is beyond explanation. Then to be so stubborn when it turns out the exact same way as anyone with a brain would have predicted is infuriating! I don’t care how much they admire a persons character (I’m sure Pax & Vinny are great guys), this is about winning the damn games, and they are certainly failing in that department. I can’t think of a worse situation for the number 1 pick and future of the franchise to be in right now. He’s simply learning how to lose at this point.

guys they won 3 in a row…..after 2 years……..i think VDN might not be that bad

It also really pisses me off that now they (esp. paxson) are talking about this team as if they are rebuilding, as if it would be acceptable to simply show some growth as a team. If that is the case, then everybody at the top needs to own up to the fact that they have failed miserably over the past 5 seasons. And a lot of people here in Chicago didn’t want to give up Deng for Kobe last year!!!! WTF?!?!

Don’t think I haven’t ALREADY gone to see a home Bucks game this year.

Does this really matter.. Vinny sucks.. His assistants suck. The bulls need to rebuild. period get something dominant the only dominant player(s) they have is Derrick Rose, Andres Nocioni, Ben Gordon? and Joakim.

not even a bulls fan, but Joakim Noah + Tyrus Thomas in the same STARTING lineup makes no freakin’ sense whatsoever. if i’m paxson i’m trading the whole team except D-Rose and maybe Noch.

If the Bulls really wanted a rookie coach, they should have gotten Mark Jackson. He’ll make a helluva coach

“How many majority owners do the Bulls have?”

    Oh that’s right just one…

A delicate balance…a new coach who has never coached anything before…new players…two seasoned veteran coaches on the bench…great as he is or might become, a green coach must be able to absorb and take advantage of the wealth of wisdom of the vet coaches…especially Del Harris, a great, smart, skilled coach who knows more than anybody about X’s and O’s.

Vinny wanted Bob Hill (ex-Spurs, Sonics) as his lead assistant, and Pax said no. Vinny has, essentially, ignored the contributions of Del and Bernie, in an act of defiance, pride, ignorance, or all three.

I just don’t know how the negotiations went from D’Antoni to Collins to a guy who nobody was certain could manage a classroom full of kids, much less an NBA team.

I hope it all works for the best, but…
