Jameer Nelson’s Shoulder Injury … How Bad is it?

by Marcel Mutoni

The Orlando Magic are asking themselves the same question at this moment; the answer will come a bit later today.

Jameer Nelson, Orlando’s newly-minted All-Star, took a nasty spill during the third quarter against the Mavs last night. He suffered what appeared to be a dislocated shoulder, and now, his team must play the waiting game.

From from the Orlando Sentinel:

The Orlando Magic are expected to find out today if their merry bandwagon has lost a wheel, jeopardizing their drive to title contention this season…Just how long Nelson will be out is the question, but the team seemed to be braced for him to miss weeks, not days. If surgery is required, he will be lost for the season.

“It’s a big blow for us,” center Dwight Howard said of Nelson’s injury. “I’m trying not to think about it because he’s been playing so well. It’s a sad day for all of us.”

The MRI results will be announced later on today.

Suddenly, the door for an All-Star replacement appears to have been cracked open. I’m certain the debate will be handled with nothing but class and grace.

  • Randy Brown Posted: Feb.3 at 11:18 am
No way the Magic win a ‘ship this year

  • Squirrel7 Posted: Feb.3 at 11:21 am
I’ve been a fan of Jameer’s since his college days, when for some bizarre reason, St Joseph’s were always chosen as the 1 college game shown on terrestrial TV here each week. Shame that he has upped his game this season to the point where he’s gotten All-Star recognition, and now he’ll likely have to miss the game. And I’d like to know where I can put money on Ray-Ray to take his place (just not Rondo, please god……..)

if mo williams isn’t the replacement someone will be murdered

Mo Williams can be Jameer’s replacement!!!!!!!!!!!!1…………………In the Skills Challenge!!!!!! Ray Ray better be in that All-Star Game

  • lobo Posted: Feb.3 at 11:55 am
Magic are in trouble. Although Anthony johnson did drop 40 against the Nets in the playoffs in one of the freakiest scoring outburts ever. Magic fans should take solace in the the fact that Saint Joseph’s school motto is “The Hawk Will Never Die!” and Jameer embodies that motto.

  • Roy Posted: Feb.3 at 11:58 am
    Rondo or Sugar Ray… :D

  • Doc Funk Posted: Feb.3 at 12:16 pm
Delonte and Jameer out? The hawk may never die, but it sure is in need of medical attention.

  • Colin Blair Posted: Feb.3 at 12:21 pm
Cavs’ Brown is the head coach. Mo williams will be the replacement. Hope it’s not a season ending injury for you guys.

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.3 at 12:32 pm
    Hopefully ENDS hasn’t jumped yet.

  • Joey E. Posted: Feb.3 at 12:49 pm
    ESPN says torn labrum/out indefinitely

  • T Money Posted: Feb.3 at 12:53 pm
Jameer is good people. Wish him a speedy recovery.

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.3 at 12:55 pm
So much for that playff run. Man, injuries are going to make the All Star game complete crap.

  • Joey E. Posted: Feb.3 at 1:02 pm
so who’s in? Ray Allen or Mo Williams?

  • tenorca Posted: Feb.3 at 1:13 pm
Mo Williams is my bet. Bummer for Jameer, though. I really like the way he plays and, especially, the way he’s been playing lately.

  • underdog Posted: Feb.3 at 1:16 pm
I hope he gets better soon.

  • yusuf Posted: Feb.3 at 1:16 pm
HELLO???? CALDERON???? IS IT NOT HIS TIME??? Who else comes back from an injury to take his team on a 3 game winning streak? Who missed only 1 FT this season? Who’s AST/TO ratio is as high as is. Hi haters. Give the man his due.

  • md Posted: Feb.3 at 1:54 pm
Its gotta be Mo Williams straight PG 4 PG swap and plus if The Orlando Freakin Magic get 3 Allstars and Boston get 2 and some ppl are callin 4 a 3rd why shudnt cleveland owners of a near identical record get 2.

  • James aka... Posted: Feb.3 at 2:00 pm
Calderon isn’t worth mentioning. No way you take a second player from the second last placed team in the conference.

  • Squad Posted: Feb.3 at 2:09 pm
Mo Williams. I hate the Cavs more than anyone but they have a better record than the Magic and yet only 1 all-star while Orlando gets 3? That’s crap. As for Calderon, I’m not ready to put a guy in the ASG for his play in the Olympics…the Raps blow.

  • Marcnificent Posted: Feb.3 at 2:51 pm
Jamal Tinsley anyone??? Steph??? Cant be any worse than freaking Anthony Johnson. GEESH

  • rapsfan43 Posted: Feb.3 at 3:06 pm
I’m a Raps fan and i love Jose. But, Mo Williams got snubbed.

  • what Posted: Feb.3 at 3:15 pm
    Why not Rondo?

  • Z Posted: Feb.3 at 3:20 pm
Wow, Jameer is almost as important as Dwight to that team. Who’s running the show now? Anthony Johnson?

  • Josh D Posted: Feb.3 at 3:24 pm
    Mo Williams 4 All Star!!!!!

  • joe Posted: Feb.3 at 3:30 pm
Ray Allen is playin much better than he did last year, and he was on the All-Star team last year. I love Mo Williams, I’ve been talkin about this dude since he was a nobody in Utah, and when he should got the Most Improved award while in Miluakee. But i dont think he is playing much better than he did last year in Miluakee. Not to say he is or was playing bad, he is definetly an all-star caliber player, but he didn’t make it because he was on a losing team, now he is killin the exact same way except on a winner. Ray Ray was an all-star last year, but he is playing a lot better this year and he’s not on the all-star team. That just does not make sense.

  • Anton Posted: Feb.3 at 3:44 pm
    Mo Williams for the win

  • Z Posted: Feb.3 at 3:59 pm
joe, it does if 6 guards are playing better than he is.

  • vtrobot Posted: Feb.3 at 4:24 pm
Even though I’m in Boston and have a full man-crush on Ray (how can you not? DEADLY shooter and professional as anyone in the league), Mo definitely deserves a spot too. The most lame thing about the ASG is the fact that once someone is selected as an “all-star” the fans, the coaches and everyone else usually feels like that person needs to be in the ASG for the next 12 years. It would be better if everyone REALLY voted for the players performance during that season and mixed up the players going to the game each year.

  • MeloMan13 Posted: Feb.3 at 4:25 pm
although i hate to admit it. Vc deserves his spot

  • Buddy Christ Posted: Feb.3 at 4:26 pm
I say Jameer goes for the surgery. In the long run it’ll be better for him. That injury ain’t no joke, I mean who knows what’ll happen if he plays on that thing. With that said, I hope Mo gets the nod for his replacement. Sure his numbers don’t jump at you but without him, as great as Lebron is, the Cavs aren’t any where near as good.

  • AMac Posted: Feb.3 at 4:43 pm
Ummm…Ray Allen’s been the best player for the C’s this season. I apprecciate that Mo Williams and the Cavs might be (half a game) better right now, but doesn’t anyone else think that the Cavs jump *might* have something to do with LeBron playing with the best players on the planet all summer (the same was Barkley’s game jumped through the roof after Barcelona in 1992)? Allen’s sacrificed the most of the “Big 3″, and has been superb this season, Mo Williams is a decent player-but not an All-Star.

  • RV Posted: Feb.3 at 5:05 pm
so he’s pretty much out for the season….i remember writing during the preseason i had a feeling the playoff and champion wouldbe determined by injuries, so far it sure seems like it…

  • Anton Posted: Feb.3 at 5:32 pm
The west and east are now both 2 horse races

  • matt Posted: Feb.3 at 5:42 pm
ray ray, the place is yours!

Here’s an idea as to who could replace Nelson in the skills competition next weekend. http://phoenix.fanster.com/2009/02/03/perfect-replacement-for-jameer-nelson-in-nba-skills-challenge-president-obama/

  • Dacre Posted: Feb.3 at 6:07 pm
Think Ceballos in 97. His one and only allstar call up was shrouded in ‘what might have been’ sentiment due to an untiemly injury (injured by the guy that was to replace him also! – Mount Mutumbo!). Chin up Nelson – Maybe we’ll see Mo Williams in the ASG yet!?

  • Simmy Sosa Posted: Feb.3 at 6:26 pm
Either Mo Williams or Mikie Bibby…

  • John Posted: Feb.5 at 1:41 am
