    On This Lakers-Celtics Affair

    by Marcel Mutoni

Sure, last night was a satisfying win on a number of levels. The Lakers beat the Celtics in Boston, snapping their 12-game winning streak along the way, and they did it without Andrew Bynum.

Afterwards, having exorcised some of their Game Six demons, L.A. (its players, fans, and press) swelled with pride, and loudly proclaimed just how “tough” they are now. From the OC Register:

Reflecting on Boston’s physical dominance last June, amplified in rebounding and on defense, Bryant said: “That’s not something I’m going to live with.”

He brought it into the present by adding street-dirty words: “I’m not going to sit here and let my teammates get punked no more.”

And don’t get me wrong, the Lakers should be thrilled that they got some measure of revenge against the hated C’s twice this season, but ultimately, it means nothing until the ball goes up in four months.

Lamar Odom’s words in the post game interview reflected this: “Revenge won’t take place until we see them in a seven-game series, and hopefully beat them.”

In short, wake me up when it’s June.

“we aint gonna get punked no more” ha ha, KB is rather street wouldnt one say?

    • Ken Posted: Feb.6 at 9:02 am
Kobe’s street talk is only slightly more believable than Stuart Scott’s.

    • James the balla Posted: Feb.6 at 9:05 am
All I know is KObe is the mother fcking man!!!

    • Hisham Posted: Feb.6 at 9:06 am
      KG: “We’re the champs, man!”

    • James the balla Posted: Feb.6 at 9:07 am
Hmmm … I wonder what this article would be like if Cleveland beat the Celtics in Beantown!! “Lebron does it again.” lol. I hope Kobe drops 109 points against the Cavs.

    • vtrobot Posted: Feb.6 at 9:13 am
Kobe was the man in NYC the other night. Some of the shots he was making were ridiculous. Last night was a pretty good game, but I have to b*tch a little bit about some calls. On KG’s BS 6th foul, how was it not a foul on Pau when he claws KG’s arm twice right beforehand? I just hate when the refs have this much influence on games. More importantly, what the hell was Baby doing on the floor for so long at the end of the game? Leon? No? Eddie? No? He’s only shooting about 95% from 3 the past couple weeks. Nice one Lakeshow, you guys are really tough now. Scary. The only Big Baby in June is going to be Kobester because that’s exactly what he turns into when things aren’t going well. Hopefully we’ll be able to get by that freak known as LeBron James. Looking forward to the Sunday game.

    • James the balla Posted: Feb.6 at 9:14 am
Yeah robot … they should take the win away from the Lakers and give two wins to the C’s.And maybe one to the Cavs for good measures. Those effing refs always with the Lakers winning them games!!!

    • James the balla Posted: Feb.6 at 9:16 am
We have another Lebrick fluffer!! Someone get him him a pair of Bron’s underwear stat, so he can sniff while watching him play!!

    • Eboy Posted: Feb.6 at 9:19 am
Thanks for being objective Marcel. Seriously.

    • riggs Posted: Feb.6 at 9:24 am
nice no call during the last seconds of REGULATION, and then again in OVERTIME.

    • TADOne Posted: Feb.6 at 9:27 am
Thanks for pointing that out, Riggs.

    • BostonBaller Posted: Feb.6 at 9:33 am
Come on my fellow Celtics fans, we can’t complain too much about last night even with the horrible calls (there were some against the Lakers also) Yes the ref who was standing right there should have called the foul on Gasol before KG pushed Fisher for his 6th but KG needs to chill with the extra arm movement. Yes Fisher was “hacking” (old school term lol) Ray and pushed him a bit on the last shot but at that point the refs were probably tired. lol I love that LA is a bit “tougher” this year but it only comes out loke most teams’ toughness comes out…against the C’s. lol

    • a_whiteman Posted: Feb.6 at 9:35 am
Just wait til qe get marbury!!!!

    • BostonBaller Posted: Feb.6 at 9:35 am
Oh yeah..Big Baby was in there b/c he has been playing very well as of late. He hit a clutch J and probably would have hit the last one he took if not for that dang block!

    • Cheryl Posted: Feb.6 at 9:36 am
Boston’s gotta get by the Lebron-veliers first. I’d rather see a rematch of the 2007 Finals. But that’s just me, right fellas?

    • TADOne Posted: Feb.6 at 9:36 am
I’m not a C’s fan, just pointing out the obvious is all.

    • Squirrel7 Posted: Feb.6 at 9:36 am
Haha @ Kobe trying to sound ’street’. For some reason it reminded me of his cameo in ‘Hang Time’ when he came out “if you take their money, you be like dem chumps”! God, how bad was the acting from the NBA stars that appeared on that show (Shareef, Mighty Mouse, Juwan Howard to name a few…….)?!

    • swish-19 Posted: Feb.6 at 9:37 am
      monta’s a beast

    • a_whiteman Posted: Feb.6 at 9:37 am
      We*

    • Hisham Posted: Feb.6 at 9:42 am
could happen, Cheryl. Should be a little more competitive this time around

    • a_whiteman Posted: Feb.6 at 9:42 am
None of this matters anyways because both teams aren’t guarentees to make the final

    • BostonBaller Posted: Feb.6 at 9:46 am
If I get my wish of a Lakers vs Celtics Finals matchup WE have to get by The Cavs and whoever gets amped up to play us and the Lakers have to get by The Hornets or Spurs or whoever gets hot in June. Kobe has street game but not the beef, he traveled from country to country growing up. Odom went to Rhode Island for goodness sake. lol. Pierce is from the streets of Cali and has been stabbed up, KG is from Chi-Town and is , well crazy..KG swears and beats his pillow up in his sleep..It’s only basketball folks. GO CELTICS!!!

    • Bryan Posted: Feb.6 at 9:47 am
Good game all the way. In the last minutes you can’t count on the refs to win you the game.

    • Richard Posted: Feb.6 at 9:50 am
Lakers to Celtics and Celtic fans: “Top of the world” “Whatca gonna say now? What can you say now?”

    • Darksaber Posted: Feb.6 at 9:52 am
i do not heart Derek Fisher. His daughter bonus just ran out, dirty ass player.good job on manhandling anyone you guard then flying around as soon as you get stroked. Punk moves, Fish. Give Doc anothet COY for adapting the lineup soooo well when KG fouled out. Big Baby? Really? Until then he was 0-5, Powe 5-7… Logic of course dictates that you put 3 offensive non factors (2 in the post, 1 iffy PG) next to the wing allstars. No pressure Ray/PP. Gawd!!!!

    • TADOne Posted: Feb.6 at 9:53 am
Marcel: Can we get a post about the Suns now seriously entertaining the fact of trading away Amare please?

    • mat smith Posted: Feb.6 at 9:54 am
Ray Ray as Jesus made Keanu look unwooden

    • adams Posted: Feb.6 at 9:57 am
So it were Kobe’s teammates who got punked in the finals? To me it looked like Kobe was the ultimate loser last june.

    • vtrobot Posted: Feb.6 at 9:57 am
@ balla - who’s the bron fluffer? me? you don’t think he’s sorta an OK player? NO? You can’t admit that? kobe’s the only one? i said that kobe is incredible too. i think lebron will eventually be better than kobe, but in a different way. right now, especially regarding technical offensive skills, kobe still has him beat, that was apparent the other night at the garden. it’s just a game, my man. at the end of the day i hope the C’s win it all and that someone beats kobe. if the C’s lose to the Lakeshow in the Finals, I’m still getting up for work the next day. it’s just more fun to watch people like kobe and teams like the yankees lose. it just is. conspiracy theories aside, i think the C’s are going to have a harder time vs. the refs when they play the cavs this year. i think most people would agree that the best thing for the NBA would be for the LeBrons to win a championship this year. I never said the refs won the game for LA last night. I just hate poor refereeing. I DON’T CARE HOW MUST HE WAS HUSTLING LAST NIGHT, BABY SHOULD NOT HAVE STARTED IN OVERTIME BASED ON HOW HE’D BEEN PLAYING. HE WAS 0-6 AT AT THAT POINT. Leon had been playing better all game and Eddie has been absolutely on FIRE.

    • BostonBaller Posted: Feb.6 at 9:58 am
No one is saying the refs should win you a game just don’t lose it for you…not that they did that last night but crucial bad or non calls can sway a game big time. As a C’s fan I’m fine with the way the game went b/c we didn’t hit crucial free throws down the stretch and we turned it over.

    • Darksaber Posted: Feb.6 at 10:00 am
well he’s obviously no longer happy/motivated enough playing next to Shaq. Trading him might be a mistake though, not many quality 4’s out there. Would Bosh’s salary match?

    • TADOne Posted: Feb.6 at 10:02 am
vtrobot: Ignore balla, he is ignorant.

    • TADOne Posted: Feb.6 at 10:04 am
Dark: Not sure about Bosh, but that would be an interesting trade for both teams. I think the Suns want an expiring contract along with some young players/picks in any deal.

    • vtrobot Posted: Feb.6 at 10:06 am
@ TAD, as I said, it’s just a game. As a life long Knicks fan, now living in Boston, I now just enjoy watching good team ball (and watching Kobe lose). Knicks could surpise the C’s and start another slump for them. I would think the Knicks want to win after the last couple they’ve had to endure. Should be an interesting one tonight. Peace, everyone.

    • Candice Posted: Feb.6 at 10:09 am
Tad, I hope the Bulls do the unthinkable and make a trade. Amare and Rose I think that’s a great combo.

    • Z Posted: Feb.6 at 10:10 am
Bill Simmons made it cool for journalists to be homers.

    • Darksaber Posted: Feb.6 at 10:11 am
Bosh in Phoenix would be amazing!

    • Hisham Posted: Feb.6 at 10:18 am
Confusing is what it would be. getting traded away from an old has-been named o’neal right back to another old has-been named o’neal. although the latter looks quite rejuvenated the last few weeks

    • BostonBaller Posted: Feb.6 at 10:21 am
The C’s better watch out tonight!! NY gets dumped on 2x for big points combined with the C’s winning streak getting snapped by the Lakers AGAIN could equal another mess. Yeah right!! We will take care of business tonight and be very efficient about it. Who knows, The Celtics might just pull off another big trade b4 the 19th..Amare? Zo? Shaq?Reggie? Cheryl? If they get Cheryl they have to go back to wearing the short shorts. lol.

    • MeloMan13 Posted: Feb.6 at 10:21 am
Bosh in Phoenix wouldnt be amazing. Phoenix is like a black hole now, they can bring in as much talent as they want but the ship still be sinkin

    • donlaker Posted: Feb.6 at 10:23 am
im a laker fan but please tell me why doc rivers has big baby taking shots in overtime clutch situations one is o.k. but the other was blocked by pau ray allen is the best shooter you have. and should take the last shots
when kg is not demanding the ball, or crying about a stupid foul..poor coaching doc trade big baby and leon po , for amarre stodamire
eddie house should have got a better screen.
see you in june cavs and lakers

    • TADOne Posted: Feb.6 at 10:26 am
Why exactly would the C’s need Amare?

    • Candice Posted: Feb.6 at 10:33 am
Amre would want to go to Boston, he want’s to be the man and he wouldn’t be able to be the man in Boston.

    • Candice Posted: Feb.6 at 10:34 am
      I mean ^wouldn’t.

    • niQ Posted: Feb.6 at 10:34 am
hey wake me up when its june as well =)

    • BostonBaller Posted: Feb.6 at 10:39 am
Stern and the NBA shareholders would do anything for a Cavs vs Lakers Final matchup and everyong knows it. What a stage that would be, what headlines it would generate: LeBron vs Kobe, Who is The Best?, Is this the passing of the torch? etc etc etc. lol. It would be a bigger deal for the NBA than Boston vs LA b/c this generation isn’t really into the history and storied matchups of the past. The games might come down to one on one b/c the refs would only call fouls on their teammates. lol.

    • j4zz m4n Posted: Feb.6 at 10:41 am
well well imagine if bynum was there….

    • Todd Spehr Posted: Feb.6 at 10:41 am
I love Kobe’s kick-ass attitude - it probably makes him what he is - but why didn’t he do more last June to stop his guys getting punked?

    • D'Bri Posted: Feb.6 at 10:48 am
2 regular season wins don’t make up for a 37 pt loss in the deciding game of the NBA Finals. so relax Lakers fans. Cant be too upset at the officials, they sucked all night. just wish there was consistency to how they calla game. let it be rough, or call all touch fouls. NBA still has huge referee problem.

    • Young Chris MP3 Posted: Feb.6 at 11:03 am
The Celtics really need to convince PJ Brown to join their team for the stretch run. Tell him that it would help him get in shape for the summer time, who knows? Whatever it takes though. Lack of bigs hurt last night (along with Kobe’s ridiculous 3-point shooting towards the end). Big Baby sucks. Everytime he shot the ball from the perimeter I was screaming (and of the 4 or 5 times he shot it near the end of regulation and in overtime, he only made it once, so why did they keep passing it to him?). Without a PJ Brown, the Celtics really can’t afford to lose KG or Perkins to foul trouble or their chances of repeating are slim.

    • donlaker Posted: Feb.6 at 11:07 am
the refs run this leauge…good point d bri..
those were some funky calls on both celtics/lakers maybe we can get the refs to participate in an all star weekend (ref wars)
that would be some funny ishnet

    • The Seed Posted: Feb.6 at 11:10 am
Ok, when the Lakers, win the refs were awful. Did anyone watch the Finals. The C’s were playing grab a Kobe, illegal picks by Garnett, moving screens, three seconds defensive in the key. How you think the C’s came back from 24 down, by making shots. No, fouls being called on the Lakers. Yes the refs suck this game, I am a Lakers fan, but at least they sucked both ways last night, instead of one way in June. Kobe is street, he is probably more than yall, he played High School ball in Philly, and from people in the area while he was playing, talked junked to everyone, cause they can’t stop him just like the NBA now. I loved seeing Lamar and Kobe get in the C’s face. Garnett was scared and Rondo needs shut up, sorry point guard.

    • Zee! Posted: Feb.6 at 11:12 am
Cue up “WAR” by Royal Flush.

    • The Seed Posted: Feb.6 at 11:12 am
The Lakers play the C’s better now, with Kobe daring Rondo to shoot, that’s the key to beating the C’s and Gasol going after Garnett-getting him in foul trouble, because Pirece can’t carry the C’s, without Garnett on the floor.

    • BostonBaller Posted: Feb.6 at 11:25 am
Come on seed of Chucky (JUST KIDDING, calm down and put the gun away) Get over what happened in June, The Celtics came back with good D and YES making shots. Was kobe gaurding Rondo? Gasol got KG in fould trouble? Pierce doesn’t have to carry them. as the song WAR fades I’ll put on WE ARE CHAMPIONS…OF THE WORLD. ANY THING IS POSSIBLLLLLLLEEEEE! lol. Win or lose, enjoy the games tonight folks b/c it’s going to be a looong 2nd half after the ASG.

    • TADOne Posted: Feb.6 at 11:34 am
Kobe did not play highschool ball in Philly. Lower Merion is a very well-off suburb of Philly and is hardly considered a basketball breeding ground by any means.

    • ciroqobama Posted: Feb.6 at 12:06 pm
Kobe is the Rick Ross of the NBA

    • ciroqobama Posted: Feb.6 at 12:06 pm
      (in a completely negative way)

    • blackjack Posted: Feb.6 at 12:11 pm
Good game by the Lakers, but I feel the Celticskind of handed it to them late in regulation and overtime. I tip my cap to the Lakers, but it doesn’t mean sh!t unless you do it in the playoffs.

    • blackjack Posted: Feb.6 at 12:11 pm
      Lamar Odom sucks

    • Allenp Posted: Feb.6 at 12:12 pm
I’m not saying the refs cheated the Celtics, I’m saying they made a bad call that hurt the Celtics. Bad calls happen, but that particular bad call was very important.
It’s just like pickup ball. You can’t push me, then call a travel when I take a few extra steps. That’s wack. The refs can’t let Gasol’s contact slide, and it happened right in front of a ref, and then call a tick tack foul on Fisher. The refs were inconsistent. Sometimes they let the teams play, then other times they got all tight. I don’t mind them letting stuff go, or calling the game tight, I just wish they would’ve picked one way and stuck with it.

    • Jackie Moon Posted: Feb.6 at 12:28 pm
Kobe is the Tiger Woods of the NBA

    • Jackie Moon Posted: Feb.6 at 12:30 pm
      (in a completely positive way)

    • Jackie Moon Posted: Feb.6 at 12:33 pm
By the way, Obama hearts Kobe.

    • ciroqobama Posted: Feb.6 at 12:38 pm
      Kobe loves watching Punk’d

    • 24 - 32 - 44 Posted: Feb.6 at 12:42 pm
All this talk about how it’s just a meaningless regular season victory and it doesn’t make up for last season’s Finals defeat. That’s all true, but that’s also history. Sweeping the Celtics this season, sets up the Lakers for this season’s playoff run. I don’t see anyone beating the Lakers in a best of seven if four of them are in LA. PJ has made that clear to the team. Now if they can just start playing some D on the interior…

    • underdog Posted: Feb.6 at 2:08 pm
I was rooting against the Celtics in this one, but I have to give props to PP for playing crazy defense on Kobe. The 6th foul on KG was a terrible mistake by the refs.

    • Josh D Posted: Feb.6 at 2:16 pm
      Spurs-Magic/cavs/Celtics in the finals

    • sho nuf Posted: Feb.6 at 2:38 pm
BTW the Lakers shot horribly from the free throw… Bynum was out… the bench was outplayed… Kobe shot at a very mediocre rate… were outrebounded… and it all comes down to a couple of fouls? Lakers won down the strech and showed mental toughness by not collapsing when the Celtics went on a run.

    • Jackie Moon Posted: Feb.6 at 4:50 pm
Don’t forget second game of a back-to-back for Lakers

    • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Feb.6 at 5:10 pm
      LMFAO @ KEN

    • stu Posted: Feb.6 at 5:21 pm
what sho nuf said, and change.
the celtics had every possible advantage to get it done, and didn’t. not to mention home court / crowd advantage. cry me a freakin’ river. those ‘no calls’ were no calls. the crowds reaction after shuttlesworth slipped and missed the OT 3 was just dumb, no one laid a hair on him. odom/marcel are right, it’s february, and this game will be a distant memory come post season, equating to jack.

    • Sesa Posted: Feb.6 at 6:00 pm
I like it how Lamar doesn’t back down from Garnett.
Garnett is a helluva player but most of the time he tried to bully opposing player

    • tealish Posted: Feb.6 at 6:28 pm
Interesting calls played a part of the game, but it wasn’t the whole story. Kobe was big as usual down the stretch. Missing a lot but hitting a lot too. Those 3’s were huge.
Garnett’s foulout was probably the worst call of the game. Hacked by Gasol - no foul. KG reaches for the loose ball, fisher does his patented exaggeration = KG fouled out. Eh, could’ve done without that.

    • donlaker Posted: Feb.6 at 7:03 pm
the lakers did play an average game no help from the machine or trever, but since the celtics once again wrote off pau gasol he burned them again
kg you are equal to pau you shoot to many 19 footers and pau thinks he can dribble in the post. kobe has showed he doesnt need bynum for them to win against the well coached defense of doc rivers (lol) more big baby getting those clutch shots

    • BostonBaller Posted: Feb.6 at 10:54 pm
by the way…why were there 3 so so refs (no vets) working a game of this magnitude? There were only 2 or 3 other games that night so they could have sent a good crew. The NBA is slacking and they can’t blame t on the economy. lol

    • MalevolentKing7242 Posted: Feb.7 at 12:04 am
Hmmmm lets see boston get past the cavs and if they survive that the dominant lakers will get them.

    • Anton Posted: Feb.7 at 1:00 am
“I wouldn’t let my team get punked…y’know? Imma do dat by not letting them touch the ball. Can’t get punked when you don’t got the ball” Bryant added.

    • Jackie Moon Posted: Feb.8 at 6:10 am
      ^^ Lame.
