Post Up: More Krypto-Nate

While Kevin Durant and Chris Paul star in their own episode of Heroes.

by Holly MacKenzie

Wow. Here we go, back to business after All-Star. I’ve got to say I enjoyed the time off from posting two daily columns, but of course, rather than resting up over the break I somehow wake up Monday morning with a headache, sore throat and chills. Yuck.

I can deal with the throat and the headaches, but that feeling when your body just needs rest and sleep? Yeah, I don’t do that too well. I’ve been a little less than agreeable the past day or so. I hate feeling like I’m missing out on stuff and spending half of your morning sleeping can make you feel crazy.

Okay, All-Star was fun, I loved the H-O-R-S-E competition, loved the dominance of Durant and enjoyed the whole Kobe/Shaq thing, even though it’s fun to see how over the top Shaq is about the two while Kobe is more, “haha, yeah it’s cool, don’t you remember you rapped that awful song about me this summer, you jerk”.

If any of you haven’t caught the All-Star videos from The Basketball Jones, aka Skeets, Tas and JD, please, please go over and check them out. My personal favorite is the Jam Session but they are all definitely worth watching. I love the Amare one too. And, well, all of them. Those guys are the best.

I’m still pretty jealous that I wasn’t IN Phoenix and, man did it sting when I got texts from all sorts of people all weekend long telling me they had met up with someone else who is a favorite of mine. It made me realize how close-knit and awesome the basketball blogging world is and it definitely made me thankful, even if I was feeling oh so very jealous.

Shoutout to the guy who hit the halfcourt shot at the end of the third quarter during the Lakers/Hawks game to win $165,000.00. Unreal. The announcer asked him if he’d be going to buy a car with the money and the first thing he said was that he had a college education to pay for. The Lakers bench was loving it and the Hawks all watched in awe at the replay. Sasha even came over to give the guy a hug. I love happy endings!

And, now we are back to the regular season and that feels great. I liveblogged Spurs@ Knicks last night for The Score and while the game started out slow and the Spurs were without Manu Ginobili, the Knicks just kept on running and took the game in overtime, winning 112-107 in the extra session without David Lee who fouled out at the end of regulation. Why were they able to win in overtime? Nate Robinson. It appears that in addition to being superman’s kryptonite, he was the Spurs as well because they were unable to stop him when he got into the lane and he finished with 32 points and 10 rebounds in 38 minutes of play. The Knicks took the game 112-107, while Chris Duhon and Wilson Chandler each scored 17. Tim Duncan had 26 points 15 rebounds and 5 assists for the Spurs, but also had 7 turnovers.  Roger Mason had 20 points and Tony Parker had 14 points but shot only 5-20 from the floor.

While Nate Robinson was the hero for the Knicks, Dwight Howard did the same for Orlando, leading them in their 107-102 overtime victory against the Charlotte Bobcats. Dwight finished with 45 points, 19 rebounds and 8 blocked shots. Monstrous line. Rashard Lewis had 17 points and Hedo Turkoglu added 13 points and 7 assists. Raymond Felton was solid for the Bobcats with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists, Boris Diaw and Emeka Okafor each scored 14 points, with Okafor adding 9 rebounds and 4 steals.

The Hornets escaped with a 100-98 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on the same night that the two teams swapped players with Tyson Chandler going to OKC while Chris Wilcox and Joe Smith being sent to New Orleans. While Kevin Durant picked up where he left off at the All-Star, scoring a career-high 47 points, including the game-tying three-pointer with 13 seconds remaining, he was two points short as Chris Paul picked up the slack for the Hornets and scored on a layup with two seconds on the clock to give the Hornets the victory. Paul had 21 and 8 assists while David West was more than solid, scoring 37 points to go with 13 rebounds. Jeff Green complimented Durant’s 47 with 24 points and Russell Westbrook added 12 points.

Despite playing without Tracy McGrady, the Rockets were able to crush the Nets, 114-88. The Rockets outrebounded New Jersey 56-30 and had 16 offensive rebounds compared to only 2 for the Nets. Yao Ming led Houston with 20 points and 12 rebounds as Shane Battier had 19 points and 9 rebounds, Von Wafer had 19 off of the bench and Ron Artest added 18. Vince Carter led the Nets with 30 points while Brook Lopez scored 21 points to go with 9 rebounds and 4 blocked shots in the loss.

In their first game under Alvin Gentry, the Phoenix Suns certainly didn’t waste any time going back to their up-tempo game in a meeting with the Clippers. Pouring in 140 points (in regulation!), the Suns rolled all over the Clippers 140-100 as they scored 81 points in the first half and did it all without Jason Richardson who was suspended for the game by the Suns. Phoenix blew open the game at the end of the opening 12 minutes as they led 41-26 and then went on to score another 40 in the second quarter to lead 81-49 at the half. Leandro Barbosa scored 24 points for the Suns as Amar’e Stoudemire had 23, Grant Hill, 20 and Steve Nash added 8 points and 10 assists. Eric Gordon had 24 points for the Clippers who were without Marcus Camby.

The Jazz took down Memphis 117-99 last night, behind 24 points from CJ Miles and 20 point and 15 assists from Deron Williams as the Grizzlies struggled offensively in the second half. Ronnie Brewer had 19 and Paul Millsap scored 18 for the Jazz. Rudy Gay and OJ Mayo led Memphis with 18 points apiece but the Grizzlies had only 15 team assists on the night.

The Bucks took down the Pistons last night, 92-86, and are finding ways to win without their stars. While this one was an up and down game with the Bucks building up a double-digit lead in the fourth, the Pistons made a run and got within one point before falling once again down the stretch. Ramon Sessions continued to show he was meant for the NBA, finishing with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Richard Jefferson scored 29 points and Malik Allen added 14 off of the bench. Antonio McDyess led the sixers with 24 points and 14 rebounds while Richard Hamilton scored 22 off of the bench and Rasheed Wallace and Allen Iverson each scored 10 points apiece in the loss.

After the Lakers outscored Atlanta 40-24 in the third quarter, that game was all but over and was not as close as the 96-83 final score indicated. Pau Gasol had a triple double with 12 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. Lamar Odom had 15 points and 20 rebounds and Derek FisherJoe Johnson’s scored 14. The Grizzlies were led by 14 (on 6-17 shooting), and Josh Smith’s 13.

    Antonio McDyess led the sixers?

Just messing, good to have the Post Up back, Holly.

“Sasha even came over to give the guy a hug. I love happy endings!” In another life…..I could have made something out of that last line. And Holly……good to see you back….you were missed. Oh yeah…..Zach Randolph is hillarious

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    How ’bout them Pistons? Ughhh…..

Can the Suns actually be scary if they keep this up?

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

    Lets go suns. And knicks!!!

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Nate Robinson is beast. And yes eboy the suns can be scary if they do that.

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

GREAT TO SEE YOU BACK! Oh, lord caps lock does not fare well over here. Anywho, great to see you back & Thanks for showing some CJ MILES LOVE! back in his HS days @ skyline, he went by Calvin. I guess when he hit the draft, he went to CJ…Sounds more athletic I guess. Gotta love it when TWO dallas area studs are on the Jazz (Deron+CJ)

  • mike

    Kevin Durant cannot be stopped

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

45,19, and 8 for Dwight was sick.

  • Squirrel7

Nate Robinson is not a beast! While his performance last night was good, he is one of the streakiest players I’ve ever seen, and seems incapable of playing within any sort of structured offense. Still, guess that isn’t really a requirement when playing for D’Antoni. And don’t even get me started on the travesty that was him winning the dunk contest…….

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Luckily the dunk contest has nothing to do with him dropping 30 on the spurs.

  • Logan

Monster games from Dwight and from my man Lamar…great to see him play with a hunger. Was watching a Kobe interview postgame and he mentioned Lamar is no longer looking for an identity with the Lakers, he knows what he has to do….well its about time, we all knew the talent he has, great to see him do his thing…

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I’m betting McDyess is regretting the decision to sign back with the Pistons again. Ugh.

  • Tom

Nice to have the Post-up back Holly……Is Rick Adelman the COY??……Houston really has no business having the record that they have considering their roster and all the injuries. And the pistons are on the verge of being unwatchable.

  • Squirrel7

But any player can have a random hot night. McDyess went off for 24 points yesterday, but that’s not exactly his season average, is it?! A 16ppg average this season on 43% shooting (31% from deep) aren’t exactly beastly numbers, in my opinion, that’s all.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

I vote Kevin Durant the most improved player in the league.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Any dude that’s 5’8 and can get 30 points and ten boards is a beast in my book.

  • Squirrel7

I’d say Durant or Danny Granger…..

  • Andy

In all the talk of PHX dropping 140 on the Clippers, Amundson brought one of his better performances in a Suns jersey, meaning Shaq only had to play 21 minutes. Between the two of them, the Suns center position provided 28 points and 16 rebounds, going 12-of-14 from the field. They are decent numbers in my book. They could still use another 3-point threat though. Barnes went 0-for-5 last night.

  • Squirrel7

AI is supposed to really be under 6 feet, and he’s been averaging ridiculous numbers his whole career. Chris Paul is only 6 foot, and his numbers are through the roof too. Therefore, I don’t consider Nate’s occasional ‘big’ nights all that impressive, that’s all. The guy has absolutely no consistency. Oh well, I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Thanks for nothing, Lil Nate. Even though he was absolutely torchuing us last night, I really couldn’t be mad at him. His game is just too improbable and fun to watch.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Durant = Beast (and the future foil to LeBron)
    Dwight = Monster LON
Eric Gordon/Brook Lopez = 2 of the most underrated rooks in a long time

  • Andy

For those hating on Nate, I can only assume it’s because they think he shouldn’t have won the dunk contest. 16, 4 and 4 for the season is pretty good in my books, considering he’s only started something like 7 of 45 games. A lot of teams would like players who give you those kinds of numbers off the bench, so the hate seems kinda harsh to me.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Hate? Nate? It all sounds the same.

  • Squirrel7

At no point did I say I hate Robinson. I merely said that he was far from a ‘beast’ (to me, a beast is someone averaging 20ppg and 10+ assists or rebounds, and Nate doesn’t fit that category). And no, I didn’t think he was particularly impressive/imaginative in the dunk contest either, but then I don’t think the other 3 participants put up much of a fight (if Rudy had nailed that dunk 1st time, I’d have given it to him no doubt), so I guess he was just the best of a bad bunch.

  • http://slamonline.com Chris O’Leary

Can’t you picture Pop — or any coach for that matter — losing their sh*t over the smallest guy on the court having that many rebounds?

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

So kobe and lebron aren’t beasts because they don’t average double doubles. Neither is dwade, kevind durant, shaq or amare. Damn that’s a pretty tough criteria.

Guess who sprained their ankle hoopin yesterday!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

And is home today (just came back from the doctor’s office)

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Whether or not Nate = Beast, he was certainly beasting last night. He’s played the Barbosa-role for d’Antoni to a T this season and has really been their spark off the bench. Personally, I’m happy for him.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

You skipped school for a sprained ankle BET? I miss HS…

  • Squirrel7

Haha, good point. But I think they’ve got it covered with their combination of points, rebounds, assists, steals, & blocks. Let me re-phrase it then, to be considered a ‘beast’ I’d expect you to be playing All-Star caliber ball, and I can’t imagine anyone campaigning for a Nate All-Star appearance any time soon, can you?!

So I guess in my opinion, there are only around 20-or-so ‘beasts’ in the league currently…

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

That’s why talent is part of playing, BET. Stick to blogging….or pouring syrups on cats.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

to tell the tale of how i sprained my ankle: We got a new goal to put in the street. It is broken and only goes up to 8 feet. I tried to do a 1 handed 360 with my eyes closed and ended up missing the rim completely and falling on the curve and rolling my ankle. I was in pain, i hopped back to the crib on 1 foot, and had to deal with the hurt all night. This morning my granddad called a cab and took me to a urgent care clinic. I get to wear a ‘cool’ ankle brace for 2 weeks!

  • Squirrel7

    Anyways, I’m out.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    BET McGrady.

Eboy i pour syrup in my drink and dont even gotta think.

oh what cleverness a lawyer can create when he gets to sit around all day due to the fact that nobody wants him defending them in court.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

LO has a surprising knack for rebounds. He’s not THAT tall and he really doesn’t get that much lift. I’ll have to start paying attention to see how he gets his. He does box out though. Which is (tragically) not a given in the L no more. Seriously, LO-Pau might be a better fit than Bynum-Pau.
Pau thrives as the sole low block dude and LO gives you as many (if not more) boards than Bynum. The reason why everybody thought that the Lakers would be better with Bynum is that they thought he’d patrol the lane. He hasn’t done that and they still don’t have a rim protector. Bynum is good, that’s not my point. I’m just saying that LO-Pau is a better combo. + LO can’t play off the bench, he’s not a don’t-give-a-eff-i-get-mine-regardless dude à la Ginobili.

BET: “I tried to do a 1 handed 360 with my eyes closed…”

    What could go wrong?

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

also, you know closing your eyes for a dunk doesn’t make it look any better…

  • http://slamonline.com Chris O’Leary

Closed eyes on a free throw is impressive though.

Closed eyes on a free throw dunk would be the most impressive, I think. Get well BET. Will you ever try the eyes closed dunk again?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Chris, no. i can dunk 10 feet, and i can grab rim on this ’8 feet’ by standing on my tip toes. I am still not sure what happened.
