Report: Porter To Be Fired Monday

by Ryne Nelson

The Suns roller coaster season will likely be going through another  loop Monday as Terry Porter reportedly will be axed as head coach.

The Arizona Republic reports the Suns will be making a skipper change tomorrow morning.

There are strong indications that the Suns will have a new head coach leading them at Monday’s scheduled afternoon practice.

Because of financial concerns, the replacement probably would come from the staff. Lead assistant Alvin Gentry would be the likely successor, not General Manager Steve Kerr, as has been reported.

Considering the team’s ninth-place record in the West and the growing dislike of Porter in the lockroom, the decision is a good one by Kerr. Unfortunately, Kerr’s good decisions are all the product of initial bad ones. The Suns GM has to be wary of losing his job as well.

This keeps getting sweeter for myself. All those times all the Kobe haters were saying “Nash and the suns are going to the ship, they just pounded your Lakers” …Well, good bye Steve Nash. Welcome to 2 MVP’s and NO Rings. Have fun in Tdot for retirement.

So lame how the Suns let their chance to host All Star Weekend be overshadowed by trade talk and coaching rumors, esp when they have a flawed roster in a brutal conference and, by my reckoning, should only be a few games better then they are now anyway.

Porter has been a victim of circumstance. He tried to turn a run and gun team into a half court team, because that is what steve kerr wanted. Everybody knew the Suns would go down as a result, Porter just happened to be the one coaching at the time.

  • underdog

    Kerr should be fired first.

  • Uzi

but the thing is.. if your run and gun is already succesful why screw with it in the first place? I mean just cuz Pop hacked the shaq, broke Nashty’s nose, got Amare and Diaw suspended never means the end of the world. and hey screw Steve Nash too! He should go sit his ass next to Marv in NBA Live where he deserves….

When will New York host a All-Star game? Is their a rule against it or something?

  • Uzi

    correction.. screw Steve Kerr!

  • Uzi

if there is a rule against it.. Spike Lee has to at least had something to do with it

  • Prison Mike

New York hosted the 1998 ASG 11 years ago. There are 30 teams meaning that other teams have been left out longer than New York. I’m suprised that it has been at least 20 years since boston hosted it.

  • Loqui

It feels like all the ASGs are hosted in the west.
    I hate kenny!

  • Mendel

    why wait till monday?

Porter is just a bad coach.

  • OneStep

“weary about losing his job”? Surely he’s more “wary” than tired?
I’ll ignore “exed” and “unfortuneatly”. If you need a proof-reader I’m available!

How any of you think Porter is just a victim of cirumstance, or was put into a bad situation is beyond me….he went into a situation where the team he was coaching was coming off of a 55 win season, with hope of winning a championship. He started training camp off by trying to turn the Suns into the Pistons….literally, he put in the entire Detroit Pistons 07-08 playbook, if that was not a red flag that Kerr made another mistake, maybe the whole Steve Nash not buying into what was being preached should have been. If a guy who has been in the League for over a decade, played for more then 4 different coaches is not accepting the system before the season even starts then you have to know something is wrong. It was not the players ego’s that made them lose hope in Terry Porter it was the fact that he tried to use something successful for a group of completely different guys on a team that was already successful the way they were. He could have preached defense without implementing an ENTIRELY new offense. He was by far the worst coaching hire since Magic Johnson tried to coach the Lakers.

    Nash contemplates suicide

  • Addam

    Nash should become the player-coach.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

The great compromise: Nash should contemplate suicide then become player coach.

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

“Alright guys, listen up. I think we should RUN…then GUN. Got it? So we’re running, THEN gunning, not before.”

  • Caleb

    “Nash should become the player-coach.”

That’s not allowed anymore though is it?

Who else thinks trading Amare Stoudamire at this point is a bad move?

Unless they can get a proven all-star in return then their chances of them making the playoffs are really small.

Imagine this roster under Mike D’Antoni. They would be the only team challenging the Lakers.

  • Sebastian B. O. Bunionstow, esq.

Nash is as exasperated as anyone else with Porter.

    the Suns have Supernova’d

I thought Porters job was to turn this team inot a good defensive one but theyre still giving up over 100 per. At least if they were a good defensive team his job wouldnt be on the line. So it isnt like it was meant to happen. He just isnt a good coach.

  • MeloMan13

the ASG has been in the west since 2004
what is the likelyhood of Tdot hosting it??

  • http://www.alllooksame.com Tarzan Cooper

porter was set up to fail.

@ Tarzan: Can you really believe that?

I believ there is actually a coach who can get this team to buy into his philosophy. his name is Mo Cheeks.

This sucks for Porter (he was clutch as hell for the Spurs) but he really was a downgrade from D’Antoni to begin with. The things he says are just the classic “right way” cliches and, sorry, but his voice makes him sound sorta dumb. I’m not surprised the team never got behind him and I’m not surprised that he’s getting the axe.

  • Andy

Now that he’s gone, do we reckon Amare will stay? If they do indeed go back to run ‘n’ gun, then his defensive frailties become much less of an issue.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Alvin Gentry is not a run-n-gun coach either.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

for the Suns the issue is going to be whether or not they wil wait for Shaq to get posistion and run their offense through his post ups. Nash is at his best when he’s probing deep into the lane and dishing or tossing up one of those impossibly consistent floaters. Shaq clogs the mddle but I’ve been surprised at the lack of Nash to Shaq oops, Nash needs to drive the line more often and get opposing bigs to help so Shaq (or Amare) can go straight to the front of the rim. Their defense is too poor on the perimter and stopping penetration for their bigs to clean it all up (Though Shaq tries. Amamre does not), they don’t rotate on shooters or really “cover for each other” in any appreciable way (showing on screens, etc) so I really don’t think they have much of a chance of improving defensively. They’ll end up as a 7th or 8th seed and be unceremoniously beat down in the first round.

my typing has regressed… I actually need to work on that.

  • http://slamonline.com Tzvi T

Seems like a done deal, with Porter confirming it.

  • dubya816

Goodbye Porter. Hopefully Amar’e will stay now. I take last night as HOPEFULLY Shaq will be gone soon. Loved the Diesel in LA but he’s caused my team to digress. I want him gone. Trade for VC and then go to Run’N Gun all over again. We could make a last effort push. We should be way better than we are.

  • http://myspace.com/arodakaroman and1ballermj2350

Word is gentry will bring the D’antoni system back which is the natural way this team should play. They shoild keep amar’e and give it another run

  • Jason

I wish Sarver would sell the team to an owner that gives a damn.
