The Post Up: Cool Jazz

And Eric Gordon.

by Holly MacKenzie

And tonight, the Toronto Raptors shocked the hell out of everyone in Toronto by defeating the San Antonio Spurs. Without Chris Bosh. Or Jose Calderon. And also Joey Graham for the final three quarters. 91-89 and I’m still a little stunned. Roko Ukic (who is LOVED by his teammates), came out of nowhere to show us he can play. Finishing with a career-high 22 points on 9-13 shooting, Ukic also hit the go ahead basket for the Raptors to put them up 90-89 with 20.8 seconds remaining. After a Toronto free throw, the Spurs were unable to score on their final play, which ended with a last second shot from Tony Parker. Andrea Bargnani had 23 points and 8 rebounds and Jason Kapono added 21. The Spurs had 32 points from Manu Ginobili, 22 from Parker and a 20/13/7 line from Tim Duncan.

I didn’t get to watch anything else besides the final 6 minutes or so of the Lakers/Jazz game and then I saw the New York/LA Clips game. It was nice to see Baron get his 20 assists and Eric Gordon is a whilrwind to watch. A good whirlwind.

I was pleasantly surprised at the Raptors win and even more surprised with how well Gregg Popovich dealt with the loss afterwards. Calm, cool and relaxed after the game, he simply said that while his guys busted their asses, the Raptors deserved to win that game.

Okay, I know lots of games last night but to be honest, I’m pretty jacked for today. And tomorrow, and Saturday and then finally Sunday! While I wish with all of my heart that I was in Phoenix, I will be camped out at home watching every second of the action. I’m sure you guys will be, too. Our guys, Ryne, Lang and Ben will be heading to Phoenix today and I for one, can’t wait for the coverage they’ll be bringing to us. From the parties and festivites to the competitions and finally the game, I’ll be checking early and often for new content. Make sure you do as well!

The Cavs had 44 points from he who must now be referred to as All-Star Mo Williams in their 109-92 victory over the Suns last night. Phoenix rested Steve Nash, so this one wasn’t much of a battle after the first quarter. While the two teams were tied at 29 at the end of the first, the Suns fell off in the second quarter, getting outscored 35-23 as the Cavs rolled from there, making up for their loss to the Pacers the night before. Besides Mo’s 44 on 18-26 shooting, LeBron James had 26/6/6, and Anderson Varejao added 13 off of the bench. Amare Stoudemire had 27 for the Suns in the loss as Grant Hill had 14 and Shaquille O’Neal added 11.

The Nuggets took down the Magic 82-73 last night as Orlando struggled to find it’s offensive rhythm without Jameer Nelson. While the Magic were shorthanded, the Nuggets continued to get used to the return of Carmelo Anthony who led his team with 29. Kenyon Martin had 13 points and Nene added 12. Dwight Howard led the Magic with a line of 16 points and 15 rebounds. Rashard Lewis scored 12 points and Hedo Turkoglu added 11.

The Hornets were happy to have Chris Paul back, but it wasn’t enough against the Celtics as Boston took down New Orleans 89-77 thanks to a fourth quarter that saw the Hornets get outscored 25-13. While the score was tied at 64-all at the start of the fourth, the Hornets opened the quarter with Paul on the bench and Boston took advantage, jumping out to a 12-point lead that they would not relenquish. The Celtics won despite losing Ray Allen with a hyperextended thumb in the first half. Paul Pierce finished with 30 points for the C’s while Kevin Garnett had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Eddie House added 12. The Hornets were led by David West’s 15 points while Hilton Armstrong added 14.

The Lakers slipped up in Utah, thanks to the wizardry of Deron Williams, who finished with 31 and 11 as the Jazz took down the Lakers 111-107 last night. This one was a tight game throughout but in the final minutes, it was Utah who kept their heads and made the right plays, including a Williams to Millsap pass for the basket and the foul on Pau Gasol to put the Jazz up, followed by a three-pointer from Mehmet Okur that sealed the deal. The Jazz shot 58% from the floor while holding the Lakers to 47%. Okur had 22 points, CJ Miles, 17 and Ronnie Brewer, 16. Kobe Bryant led the Lakers wth 37, as Lamar Odom again was a beast, with 19 points and 19 rebounds in the loss.

The Clipps held on to take down the Knicks, it just took overtime to do it. One day after giving up 144 points to the Warriors, the Knicks found themselves in another high-scoring overtime battle, this one going to the Clippers, 128-124. While the Clippers were down by as many as 10 in the fourth, they found a way to will overtime and then let their rookie, Eric Gordon steal the show. Gordon finished with 30 points, Zach Randolph added 22 points and 15 rebounds and Baron Davis dished 20 assists to go with his 13 points. Nate Robinson scored 33 for the Knicks as David Lee had a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double and Wilson Chandler added 27.

Who is this Pistons team ya’ll speak of?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

TAD…..it will get better….I believe that.

  • Jackie Moon

Deron William caused all kinds of havoc on the Lakers defense. He was burning his own guy, and then drawing defenders, putting everyone on the Lakers out of position. I would like to have him on my team.

  • http://fdklf.com Jukai

    FREE STEVE NASH

  • http://fdklf.com Jukai

Also, considering that Deron Williams only started balling like a top-ten all time caliber point guard AFTER the all-stars were picked, you guys really need to get off that.

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

Kobe is so clutch … last night was a good game. Utah got lucky with Okur in the end. But Kobe is deadly!!

Eboy, please send that memo to:
    Detroit Pistons c/o Joe Dumars
    5 Championship Dr
    Auburn Hills, MI 48326
    -
Apparently, they didn’t get the memo.

The only Kobe was clutching was his ball sack after doing that embarassing dance.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

im off to go watch Miracle At Saint Anna (or whatever it’s called, my homebody rented it). But before i leave, @James, YALL LOST.

  • Candice

sigh Tad, it will be okay. Of course I didn’t see the game but I just feel everything will work out for the best. Did Curry make some questionable moves last night? It looked like AI had a good shooting night but otherwise, how did everyone else look?

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

Yeah yeah … they lost and are still top in the NBA. But with the steal, the shot before the balls dance. And I don’t know if ya’ll use to watch Jordan or not. But if you are referring Kobe to Jordan. He use to do stupid sht too. Why do you think him and his wife divorced … he was immature alot of times. But ya’ll forget that … why? Because Kobe did something. OMG KOBE DID THE BALL DANCE. SEE SEE, HE ISN’T THE GREASTEST. You guys ar elike 6 year olds.

Candice: I didn’t watch one minute of the Pistons game. I did watch Carolina beat Duke.

I’m actually like a 4 1/2 year old with a nipple in his mouth.

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

    Orrr … a 4 1/2 year old with a thermometer in your a$$.

  • Candice

    Good alternative

deron williams is the best point guard in the league, by far.

  • JESSEG

About the Amare comments…..I live here and have read everything on Azcentral and other places and have never read he said that. He said the other day if he went to another team they would have a chance at the Playoffs! That’s it really. People are making Amare out to be a lot worse than he actually is IMO. Shaq and even Steve Nash have been throwing people under the bus a lot more than Amare has this year. The Suns I think would still be stupid to trade him. He is our only hope for the future really. I’m truly beginning to feel Steve Kerr hates the Suns.

  • http://slamonline.com spiceman

If the Suns could get Chris Bosh for Amare Stoudemire it would be a win for both sides. If Bosh is leaning towards not resigning with Toronto a trade now is in the Raptor’s best interest. Bosh would certainly fill Amare’s shoes and then some.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

I think Shaq being there limits Amare’s affectiveness. He is still a very very very good player and we’ve all seen that when put in the right situation he can be dominant. I’d take him in Atlanta.

Eric Gordon is starting to look like that dude. Glad to see him finally get his shine on.

  • Clark Kent

DP, I couldn’t agree more with you about Eric Gordon. That dude is instant buckets.

  • Brian

DWILL IS THE BOMB!! He crossed up Kobe in the game and he should of made the all star game but couldn’t overcome the injury earlier in the season

  • http://jamescleaton.ning.com jaymes

If Portland go after Amare i’d be shocked. Amare to The D is the only trade that makes sense IMO (or maybe NYK)..
No Ai or Sheed, Amare on the block by himself, or off pick and rolls with stuck..Looks good to me.

  • http://jamescleaton.ning.com jaymes

Why ya’ll want argue Williams over Paul or vice versa?..Just leave it at the 2 best Pg’s in the world..And Eric Gordon has always been that dude IMO

  • KBDWILL

To everyone talkin about the jazz being a playoff nightmare for the lakers, im not buying it jazz are just to weak on the road. We need to get to the 6th seed so we can beat Denver!

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Holly: you should have mentioned how Nate Robinson also had 15 ASSISTS and 9 REBOUNDS.
    1 short of a TRIPLE DOUBLE. But s’all good…

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Mo Williams is becoming one of the best point guards in the league. Top 3 soon, if not already.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

@ Co Co: Uhh… Josh Smith?

  • http://www.ozhiphop.com/forum danino brown

you say u watched the clippers/knicks game yet no mention of why the knicks really lost…?

Al Harrington technical for hanging on the ring with 25 seconds to go anyone?

followed up by bricking a thouuuuusand outside shots in OT

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Watching the Mavs/Celts game right now, and i love these teams! Nowitzki is showcasing some serious scoring (as usual) even posting up Garnett on the regular. (29 Points mid third quarter? Gangsta). And even yapping back into KG’s grill when they got into a little tussle earlier. Then Dirk takes him to the hoop twice in a row, scores, and let’s him hear about it…Double technical, consequence? KG has 5 Fouls with a whole quarter left to play. not clever! I love the chippy stuff!! Go DIRK!

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Didn’t Ray Ray suffer a hyperextended thumb on his shooting hand yesterday? Bloody stroke is still a thing of beauty! Wish i could shoot like that with 10 healthy fingers.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

jesus, PP sure is clutch (Dirk too, only scoring option tonight) arrrrgh, Dirk just missed a FT. Fraaack!

If STAT could turn any team he gets traded to into a contender, wouldn’t the team he plays for now be one? ALSO, the Knicks are possibly more frustrating than the Bulls. I need to go party with Michael Phelps just to mellow out.
