The Post Up: Cool Jazz

And Eric Gordon.

by Holly MacKenzie

And tonight, the Toronto Raptors shocked the hell out of everyone in Toronto by defeating the San Antonio Spurs. Without Chris Bosh. Or Jose Calderon. And also Joey Graham for the final three quarters. 91-89 and I’m still a little stunned. Roko Ukic (who is LOVED by his teammates), came out of nowhere to show us he can play. Finishing with a career-high 22 points on 9-13 shooting, Ukic also hit the go ahead basket for the Raptors to put them up 90-89 with 20.8 seconds remaining. After a Toronto free throw, the Spurs were unable to score on their final play, which ended with a last second shot from Tony Parker. Andrea Bargnani had 23 points and 8 rebounds and Jason Kapono added 21. The Spurs had 32 points from Manu Ginobili, 22 from Parker and a 20/13/7 line from Tim Duncan.

I didn’t get to watch anything else besides the final 6 minutes or so of the Lakers/Jazz game and then I saw the New York/LA Clips game. It was nice to see Baron get his 20 assists and Eric Gordon is a whilrwind to watch. A good whirlwind.

I was pleasantly surprised at the Raptors win and even more surprised with how well Gregg Popovich dealt with the loss afterwards. Calm, cool and relaxed after the game, he simply said that while his guys busted their asses, the Raptors deserved to win that game.

Okay, I know lots of games last night but to be honest, I’m pretty jacked for today. And tomorrow, and Saturday and then finally Sunday! While I wish with all of my heart that I was in Phoenix, I will be camped out at home watching every second of the action. I’m sure you guys will be, too. Our guys, Ryne, Lang and Ben will be heading to Phoenix today and I for one, can’t wait for the coverage they’ll be bringing to us. From the parties and festivites to the competitions and finally the game, I’ll be checking early and often for new content. Make sure you do as well!

The Cavs had 44 points from he who must now be referred to as All-Star Mo Williams in their 109-92 victory over the Suns last night. Phoenix rested Steve Nash, so this one wasn’t much of a battle after the first quarter. While the two teams were tied at 29 at the end of the first, the Suns fell off in the second quarter, getting outscored 35-23 as the Cavs rolled from there, making up for their loss to the Pacers the night before. Besides Mo’s 44 on 18-26 shooting, LeBron James had 26/6/6, and Anderson Varejao added 13 off of the bench. Amare Stoudemire had 27 for the Suns in the loss as Grant Hill had 14 and Shaquille O’Neal added 11.

The Nuggets took down the Magic 82-73 last night as Orlando struggled to find it’s offensive rhythm without Jameer Nelson. While the Magic were shorthanded, the Nuggets continued to get used to the return of Carmelo Anthony who led his team with 29. Kenyon Martin had 13 points and Nene added 12. Dwight Howard led the Magic with a line of 16 points and 15 rebounds. Rashard Lewis scored 12 points and Hedo Turkoglu added 11.

The Hornets were happy to have Chris Paul back, but it wasn’t enough against the Celtics as Boston took down New Orleans 89-77 thanks to a fourth quarter that saw the Hornets get outscored 25-13. While the score was tied at 64-all at the start of the fourth, the Hornets opened the quarter with Paul on the bench and Boston took advantage, jumping out to a 12-point lead that they would not relenquish. The Celtics won despite losing Ray Allen with a hyperextended thumb in the first half. Paul Pierce finished with 30 points for the C’s while Kevin Garnett had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Eddie House added 12. The Hornets were led by David West’s 15 points while Hilton Armstrong added 14.

The Lakers slipped up in Utah, thanks to the wizardry of Deron Williams, who finished with 31 and 11 as the Jazz took down the Lakers 111-107 last night. This one was a tight game throughout but in the final minutes, it was Utah who kept their heads and made the right plays, including a Williams to Millsap pass for the basket and the foul on Pau Gasol to put the Jazz up, followed by a three-pointer from Mehmet Okur that sealed the deal. The Jazz shot 58% from the floor while holding the Lakers to 47%. Okur had 22 points, CJ Miles, 17 and Ronnie Brewer, 16. Kobe Bryant led the Lakers wth 37, as Lamar Odom again was a beast, with 19 points and 19 rebounds in the loss.

The Clipps held on to take down the Knicks, it just took overtime to do it. One day after giving up 144 points to the Warriors, the Knicks found themselves in another high-scoring overtime battle, this one going to the Clippers, 128-124. While the Clippers were down by as many as 10 in the fourth, they found a way to will overtime and then let their rookie, Eric Gordon steal the show. Gordon finished with 30 points, Zach Randolph added 22 points and 15 rebounds and Baron Davis dished 20 assists to go with his 13 points. Nate Robinson scored 33 for the Knicks as David Lee had a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double and Wilson Chandler added 27.

And the Hawks beat the Pistons.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

LO’s either playing himself into a great trade piece….a fat new contract at the end of the season…or a really dangerous matchup for almost every team in the league come playoff time. Good to see him doing his thing….and hopefully every Laker fan that downtalked him for the longest learns to keep their mouths shut.

  • Ken

LO so close to the 20-20. Has he ever had one? And is anybody else worried about the Suns? If the playoffs started today, they wouldn’t even be in. To say nothing of the Amare trade distraction…

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Where’s matt the jazz fan? I’ve been saying that the Jazz are a potential matchup nightmare for the Lakers if they meet in the playoffs. The Lakers are so wild……giving up 111 to the Jazz. Isn’t that like 25 points over their per game average.

  • http://www.ballislife.com Justin Walsh

man, you should be asking where Ryne is, he’s a bit of a Jazz fan!

  • Squirrel7

When Boozer is healthy again, is there any chance of starting him and Millsap in the same 5, or are they too similar? Because if they could both start, along with maybe Williams, Brewer and Okur, that would be a pretty strong starting lineup, with some decent (role) players to come off the bench, like CJ Miles, Kirilenko (when fit), Harpring etc. Only seen Millsap get extended minutes a few times so not sure if him and Boozer could co-exist…..

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Carolina beat Duke! So, was there anything else that happened last night?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Yes, that was the highlight of the week so far.

  • matt the jazz fan

matt the jazz fan signing in, eboy!

  • matt the jazz fan

about a lakers / jazz series, which as things currently stand would be in the first round, it’s a matter of whether utah manages to stop kobe from going to the basket without fouling too much. otherwise they’re don’t match up too poorly, especially if lamar or pau have to step out on memet leaving boozer or paul m. to wreak havoc on the offensive boards.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

If they take a cue from the Celtics plan of attack they should be able to keep 24′s drives and free throws to a mininum….plus they have enough rangy defenders to cause Kobe frustration.

  • matt the jazz fan

at squirrel, i think the best five would probably be deron, brewer, millsap, memet and kirilenko. two players rooted in the low post is a little too much.

unless booze starts in the high post and drives instead of playing with his back to the basket (something millspa doesn’t do yet). in which case go head and play him with millsap and bring andrei off the bench.

this is assuming memet hits his threes thereby opening the floor.

but that’s just my two (euro) cents.

  • matt the jazz fan

but will they get the same non calls on the ticky-tack fouls when kobe drives

(predictable jazz complaint about refs – dates back to the finals push off ;-)

  • matt the jazz fan

(hey my comment got moderated, fisrt time, and god knows why)

eboy – it depends on the ticky tack fouls on kobe’s, or anyone else’s for that matter, not being called.

not sure whether utah gets the same respect, esp. outside salt lake, as the celts do…

  • Squirrel7

True, was just wondering how likely it was that Sloan might try and squeeze them both into the same lineup. I could imagine Millsap’s numbers would take a significant hit if Boozer was back anyway, but I’d still be interested to see it. Either way, I think Jazz have got one of the deepest teams in the L.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

True…..but I’m a firm believer that Jerry Sloan is due to beat Phil Jackson in one series in his career…..and an “out of nowhere, how’d that happen one” would probably make that bad taste in his mouth from ’97 an ’98 subside a little.

  • Krishan

Amare saying he’ll turn any team he’s traded to into a championship contender? And saying that any team breakdown should be blamed solely on the captain, that he has NO FAULT WHATSOEVER? Throwing nash under the bus like that? Well F*CK HIM. You just lost a fan, STAT. At least when shaq was being a d*ck, he was funny.

  • Myung

You asked yesterday what my definition of a great game would be, Tad. That was a great game, as far I’m concerned. Obviously I was happy with the results. I have a feeling we’ll see this match up again in the playoffs.

  • Squirrel7

I’d assume Amare has never heard the expression ‘defense wins championships’, then? I said yesterday that if I was Portland I’d rather keep LaMarcus, and I certainly stand by it now. Even if he (Aldridge) never reaches STAT’s level, no locker-room needs that sort of guy in it…… (plus I love Portland as they seem one of the most humble teams in the whole league)

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

What great game last night, Myung? Oh, you mean Duke/Carolina? Hell yeah, that was a great game and they probably will meet up in the tourney.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Eboy, LO’s problems have always been with the mental aspect of the game. He gets rattled easily. Talent was a never a question. The way he got punked in the Finals last year was comical, at best.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Shaq shot SEVEN shots in 37 minutes in this game, hitting five. SEVEN! All this while Big Z finished with a big ol Donut on the scoring sheet. I mean, keep on wasting those resurgent scoring outbursts he’s been having Phoenix, seriously! Limit his touches in the post to SEVEN, that’s good tactics.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

People are talking about Durant and Al Jefferson. If anyone doesn’t get enough love, it has to be Deron Williams.

  • josh

If the Clippers keep on winning Gordon should be moving up on those ROTY lists.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

as i stated on yesterday’s post up and sometime today, DERON WILLIAMS IS A BEAST. Fantastic speed for his size/weight, great looking jumper, and more than enough ability to get to the hoop at will. Five 30 Point / double figure assist games in a row is no joke. That’s my point god right there, cp3 be damned.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

VLAD RAD DROPPED OFF LAST NIGHT!!! 21 POINTS INCLUDING 5 3 POINTERS AND ONE THUNDER SLAM ON CARON BUTLER!!!!

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Krishan: STAT said THAT? Jesus, so he truly IS a d*ck then? Turn ANY team he gets traded to into a contender? Really? Ok Kerr, trade him to the clippers, eff getting equal value back, just send him to Nba purgatory already. Great, this is going to be the overwhelming theme at Allstar Weekend, talk about galling!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

A Laker fan not mentioning Vlad-Rad having a great game just shows they get p!ssed when THEIR management is the one getting r@ped, not the sub-500 team’s.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Dark, STAT thrives in a team that runs a lot. I think his problem is, on a slow paced team (like Phoniex is becoming) he cannot be utlized. IF STAT goes to a team that runs a lot, that team will be a contender, but that team also needs to have talent around him. New York or Portland are the only two teams i think could fully utilize him.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

BET, you are very knowledgeable, but tell me, which “running” team last won the title, let alone be seen unanimously as a “contender”. If Amare (who cares about the spelling this season?) really said all those things to the media (just going on Krishan’s words here) he needs a reality check. Last time i saw him playing (two games ago) he still didn’t get the hang of basic help D. I truly believe that the Blazers are capable of making lots of noise come april/may.. they don’t need mister malcontent for that (believe me, Rudy Fernandez will fill THAT role sooner or later)

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Dark, I see what you are saying, i think New York is the best fit. Say NY sends Phoniex Marbury’s expiring contract, somebody like Wilson Chandler/Nate (two young players), or a couple of draft picks. STAT would be coached by the Pringles Kid again, would be in a running offence again, and now would be the center of the team’s offense again (Because the Suns of today look to me like it all runs through Shaq and Nash). With all those factors, and the fact that he would only have 3 serious teams to face in the East, the Knicks would be a contender.

  • Krishan

Saw it on NBA TV a couple of hours ago. Even Rick Kamla was pissed at stat.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

I must respectfully disagree. They’d have problems against the Magic, the Cavs, and even Detroit (great potential, if they got their act together). And let’s not start with him facing KG/Perk/Glen/Leon in a ummm, 5 game series?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

And for all you b!tches: I HAVE A EARLY RELASE FROM SCHOOL TODAY.HAHAHAHAAAAA

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Dark, my 3 serious teams are Orlando, Boston, and Clevland. I dont see Detroit doing sh!t this year, it looks like 5 separate players on the court, while when the Pistons were a force it looked like 1 united supernova player.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Oh man, i marvel at STAT’s abilities on Offense, i used to dig his more quite style in general, but that has got to be one of the meanest ways to ensure your ticket out of town. (Vince still leads that category). D’Antoni’s system and Nash’s assists, not to mention the fact that Matrix had all the defensive pressure any undersized 4 could handle, helped Amare become the man, especially before the surgeries… No need to turn into a backstabbing c*nt, Amare. Jesus!

  • Krishan

BET, STAT gets traded to the knicks, they become a contender of the hell-freezing-over conference. That’s just not happening. With his attitude right now, doesn’t matter how good he is, whichever team gets him will have to deal with his prima donna demeanor on top of winning actual games.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

BET: true that, but i haven’t quite given up on the Pistons yet. Too many vets on there for ish to just blow up like this… something’s gonna happen..soon.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

I still have no idea how STAT said what he said, i am just judging him as a player. Plus he writes for the site, so i got much love for him, even though he never asks Jarred Dudley questions for me.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Dark: Like a trade that would get rid of Iverson and bring in a missing piece? Because that is the only thing i see saving them, i might be blind though..

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

To be honest, i don’t know if it’s all on AI’s little shoulders. Not a Pistons follower, but the games i’ve seen so far (including the ridiculous one against the Bulls two nights ago) show me a certain lack of chemistry and tolerance amongst the guys. And some tuning out of the coach. I have this theory (gut feeling, really), NBA players do NOT respond well to someone they played against, might be a pride thing. Terry Porter might just be having the same problem with the suns, not sure. McMillan has a young hungry team over there in Portland, so his authority is unquestioned (maybe Lafrentz would dare, but meh..)

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

If STAT could turn any team he gets traded to into a contender, wouldn’t the team he plays for now be one? ALSO, the Knicks are possibly more frustrating than the Bulls. I need to go party with Michael Phelps just to mellow out.

I need a transcript, or better, movie of Amare’s despicable interview…ummm, STAT. Ryne?

Deron William caused all kinds of havoc on the Lakers defense. He was burning his own guy, and then drawing defenders, putting everyone on the Lakers out of position. I would like to have him on my team.

    FREE STEVE NASH

sigh Tad, it will be okay. Of course I didn’t see the game but I just feel everything will work out for the best. Did Curry make some questionable moves last night? It looked like AI had a good shooting night but otherwise, how did everyone else look?

  • http://iwantoutofokc.com/ James the balla

Yeah yeah … they lost and are still top in the NBA. But with the steal, the shot before the balls dance. And I don’t know if ya’ll use to watch Jordan or not. But if you are referring Kobe to Jordan. He use to do stupid sht too. Why do you think him and his wife divorced … he was immature alot of times. But ya’ll forget that … why? Because Kobe did something. OMG KOBE DID THE BALL DANCE. SEE SEE, HE ISN’T THE GREASTEST. You guys ar elike 6 year olds.

  • JESSEG

About the Amare comments…..I live here and have read everything on Azcentral and other places and have never read he said that. He said the other day if he went to another team they would have a chance at the Playoffs! That’s it really. People are making Amare out to be a lot worse than he actually is IMO. Shaq and even Steve Nash have been throwing people under the bus a lot more than Amare has this year. The Suns I think would still be stupid to trade him. He is our only hope for the future really. I’m truly beginning to feel Steve Kerr hates the Suns.

  • http://slamonline.com spiceman

If the Suns could get Chris Bosh for Amare Stoudemire it would be a win for both sides. If Bosh is leaning towards not resigning with Toronto a trade now is in the Raptor’s best interest. Bosh would certainly fill Amare’s shoes and then some.

  • http://coco-vents.blogspot.com Co Co

I think Shaq being there limits Amare’s affectiveness. He is still a very very very good player and we’ve all seen that when put in the right situation he can be dominant. I’d take him in Atlanta.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com DP
