The Post Up: Fun Suns

Running is good. Especially if you’re Phoenix.

by Holly MacKenzie

Had a little bit of a struggle last night.

Lakers @ Warriors. And it was a close one. My heart was entirely conflicted. This is why I need to learn to be solely a basketball fan instead of a basketball fan who grew up Lakers and has fallen in love with the Warriors.

Unfortunately for me, (or fortunately, depending on which half of my heart you were asking),  the Warriors fell apart in the final minutes after leading for most of the game. They played so well and worked so hard, but it was all for naught.

I need to be honest and say we won’t have too much in the way of recaps today because I didn’t see much of anything last night. I saw Lakers/Warriors and a few minutes of Phoenix/Clippers and that is it. Besides Bron doing his thing in Toronto, of course. I’m hoping you guys can help me fill in the blanks.

The news of the night was the Chandler-Wilcox/Smith trade being rescinded after Chandler failed his physical. Imagine how awkward it is for the front office of New Orleans, to “welcome back Tyson with open arms”. You don’t really have much choice now, do you? I loved the idea of Tyson in OKC, but I’m happy for Chris Paul and Byron Scott who were so obviously not feeling the trade.

Thrilled to see Gerald Wallace with a great game for the Bobcats last night. Big win for Charlotte over Indiana and even better to see G-Wall healthy.

I didn’t want to hear that Danny Granger left that Pacers/Bobcats game in the first quarter with a sprained ankle. Let’s hope that isn’t anything too serious.

While sitting at the game last night, I realized I need to figure out this Twitter madness. I’ve got an account, @stackmack (shout out to Stack Jack!), but I don’t know, I can’t seem to get the hang of it. I’ve been reading the stuff other people have been writing, but I don’t get the exchanging of messages, I always forget to update, I’m an awful twitter-er.

That we have video of Ivy getting rid of the ‘rows up on TrueHoop makes me wonder about the world we live in. This media accessibility we have is amazing. The fact that I sat through three plus minutes of Iverson getting a haircut (it was at the half, at least), makes me shake my head.

If you only read one newspaper article today, please, make it this one. I jacked this off of a friend’s facebook profile, so thanks go to him for posting it so I could read and be thankful once again of the lessons this beautiful game can teach and for the pain that it can heal.

Really, read the article.

I want to ask a player to let me try out their Beats headphones. Those things are everywhere.

The speed that LeBron can switch from mature, professional NBA player giving a postgame interview to 24 year-old guy getting ready to go shower, singing, wailing and joking with his teammates is amazing.

Pretty fun to watch, too.

Sebastian Telfair. It feels so good every time I see this guy pull out a great game and last night against the Heat, he had 30 points and 8 assists and it felt great. 5 turnovers? Whatever, I’m basking in the 30 points. The Wolves won that one 111-104 as well.

Can someone explain the Brad Miller to Chi trade for me? I just don’t really get it. Thanks. The Bulls managed to defeat the Bucks last night, 113-104, behind 31 points from Kirk Hinrich off of the bench and 18 points and 9 assists from Derrick Rose. The Bulls won despite being outrebounded 50-38, as the Bucks shot only 38% for the game.

The Hawks won 105-100 against the Kings last night and Al Horford had a nice line of 18 points and 18 rebounds.

Brandon Roy led the Blazers over the Grizz 94-90, with 24 points and 9 assists.

Anthony Randolph has the best angry face. He has such a baby face. If Jermaine O’Neal looks like he’s 12, Randolph looks like a toddler. He was great last night though and finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds in the loss while Stephen Jackson led the Warriors with 24 points and 9 assists. Corey Maggette had 24 off of the bench and Jamal Crawford added 23. The Lakers were led by Kobe Bryant’s 30 points and 8 assists. Pau Gasol had 24 points, 12 rebounds and 5 rebounds, Lamar Odom added 20 points and Trevor Ariza scored 17 off of the bench including back-to-back three’s to help the Lakers take control of the lead in the final minutes. The Lakers took the game 129-121, thanks to a fourth quarter that saw them outscore the Warriors 39-29.

The Raptors were without Chris Bosh and with their two newest players, Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks. Unfortunately, those two didn’t replace the one who was out and while the Raptors were able to hang with the Cavs in the first half and trailed by only six at the half, they lost control of things again in the third quarter when they were outscored 24-15, and fell behind by as many as 21 in the fourth quarter. The Cavs handled this one easily, cruising to a 93-76 victory. While LeBron started out distributing the ball to his teammates, he started scoring in the third and finished with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists. Shawn Marion finished with 10 points, 6 rebounds and a team-high 6 assists as Joey Graham scored 15 and Jose Calderon had 13 but only 3 assists to go with 3 turnovers. Zydrunas Ilgauskas scored 22 for the Cavs and Mo Williams added 17.

The Suns dropped 140 points on the Clippers Monday night. Last night, they headed to L.A. for another game against the Clippers and the result was the same, except the Suns added two to their points total. Taking down the Clippers 142-119, the Suns showed once more that they can play the running game that they’d all missed so much under Coach Porter. While Amar’e Stoudemire had been involved in trade rumors all over the break, it appears they may keep him in Phoenix, especially after he put in a 42-point, 11-rebound performance last night on 15-20 from the floor. While the Suns topped 30 in each quarter, they had 41 in the fourth while the Clippers had 29. The Suns had 34 assists to only 7 turnovers and shot 58% from the floor as compared to 47% from the Clippers. Al Thornton had 33 points to lead LA while Eric Gordon scored 23 and Fred Jones added 20 off of the bench. Steve Nash had 21 points and 12 assists for the Suns and Shaquille O’Neal added 16.

Vladimir Radmonovic PWNED RASHO NESTEROVIC AND BRANDON RUSH. That dunk was crazy. The space cadet went to the moon!

Good night for our Diary guys.

  • BETCATS Posted: Feb.19 at 9:41 am
Holly said it already but WALLACE IS BACK. He was dunking, he was blocking shots, he was getting out on the break! 25 points 10 rebounds 7 assists 2 steals and 1 spectacular block are ‘vintage’ Gerald.

  • Bryan Posted: Feb.19 at 9:42 am
Its the second half of the season and I am excited at the idea of teams really picking it up to finish strong.

  • BETCATS Posted: Feb.19 at 9:43 am
Shia, do you think Gentry is gonna be named official head coach, or will he be replaced this summer?

  • Bryan Posted: Feb.19 at 9:47 am
Its too early to tell at this point, if they finish the season strong and play well in the playoffs I don’t see why they would let him go. Right now the guys are just excited to get back to their strong suit.

  • Simon S.Y Lawy Posted: Feb.19 at 9:52 am
    love the old sun…

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.19 at 9:55 am
It’s amazing what playing back-to-back games against the Clips can do for team psyche.

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.19 at 9:56 am
Also, loved the video of AI getting his hair cut and then the players reaction. Thanks for the other story as well, Holly. Great piece.

  • Eboy Posted: Feb.19 at 9:59 am
I saw that same story on CNN last night that Holly linked to. Nice move by the kid. A lot of guys in the professional ranks *cough, cough Zach Randolph*cough, cough, should take the cue from a young man like that and get some class behind them.

  • BETCATS Posted: Feb.19 at 10:03 am
why arent any of these damm NBA teams trading anything yet? This day will be a yawn festival.

  • Todd Spehr Posted: Feb.19 at 10:06 am
Crazy thing about Amare is that he had those 42 in 26 minutes – and didn’t score in the final five minutes he was on the floor. So he essentially had 42 in 21. I think they’ll keep him now.

  • dubya816 Posted: Feb.19 at 10:06 am
    Amar’e deserves a hug.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Feb.19 at 10:36 am
Just when mt squad starts to dominate granger goes down… DAMN YOU BETCATS!

  • ciolkstar Posted: Feb.19 at 10:37 am
I’ve always though Nellie was crazy in aloveable way, but I cannot understand what he’s doing leaving Anthony Randolph on the bench.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.19 at 10:40 am
The players’ reaction to AI’s cut is outstanding.

  • riggs Posted: Feb.19 at 11:06 am
that story was given a shoutout on around the horn by, surprisingly, the “evil” mariotti.

  • riggs Posted: Feb.19 at 11:08 am
also, i dont know if this is foreboding but o’neal got injured in his first game with the heat

  • BETCATS Posted: Feb.19 at 11:12 am
why hasnt anything been traded! This is disappointing so far.

  • Joel O's Posted: Feb.19 at 11:26 am
Man. It’s crazy how a 20-9-9 game for Lebron is just pedestrian by now, one where he sits back and distributes and rebounds and picks his spots scoring, whereas by anyone else’s standards a 20-9-9 game would be “an explosion”.

  • Bryan Posted: Feb.19 at 11:29 am
    Lamar Odom for midseason MIP.

  • BETCATS Posted: Feb.19 at 11:35 am
did all the commentors here get traded for no commentors?

  • Bryan Posted: Feb.19 at 11:42 am
    Co sign bet.

  • Bryan Posted: Feb.19 at 11:55 am
Its always the days I have an oppurtunity to include myself in the conversation too. I’m the slamonline locker room cancer.

  • BETCATS Posted: Feb.19 at 12:00 pm
no, i think they are cowering in fear from my all day presence. Oh well. FACE MONSTER ATTACK!

  • ciroqobama Posted: Feb.19 at 12:05 pm
When is the Josh Powell braid-cutting video gonna drop?

  • Myung Posted: Feb.19 at 12:16 pm
18 and 18 by Horford was nice. His first good performance in about 2 months, really (injured or not, he has been a mild disappointment thus far this season; he is my favorite Hawks player so I’m hoping yesterday was a sign of better things to come).

  • Z Posted: Feb.19 at 12:36 pm
    Shaq to Cleveland!?

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Feb.19 at 12:38 pm
i was at the warriors/lakers game last night. there were so many lakers fans in the house it was disgusting. the two ariza treys (assisted by kobe, no less) broke the warriors and they just didn’t know what to do. in truth though, i knew warriors iso plays/make baskets can’t last the whole game, and it couldn’t have come during the worst time. captain jack was pretty cold most of the night, so i was surprised that he took so many shots. warriors started off well because both randolph and turiaf were playing so they did have a little bit of size up front, nellie should have went back to that at the end. Monta is obviously not completely himself yet.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Feb.19 at 12:48 pm
Anthony Randolph is such a beast. And I love the fact that he looks just like a huge Monta Ellis.

  • Jukai Posted: Feb.19 at 1:04 pm
Hey, Ben Wallace and Sasha for Shaq? Can’t really see that happening. Would love to see Ben Wallace on the break.

  • Jukai Posted: Feb.19 at 1:05 pm
Hmmm… my last comment is under moderation. What did I say? Is Shaq a moderation word?

  • Jukai Posted: Feb.19 at 1:05 pm
    …?

  • Jukai Posted: Feb.19 at 1:06 pm
Musta had the wrong mailing address. Yeah, Wallace/Sasha for Shaq. That’d be interesting. As a diehard Suns fan and a pretty hardcore Cleveland fan, I’m bemused but not exactly against the deal, only to see how Wallace would do on the fast break.

  • Anton Posted: Feb.19 at 1:41 pm
Cavs will get Amare in 2010

  • Anton Posted: Feb.19 at 1:42 pm
The Shaquille O’Neal offer is still alive, but the Cavs are seeking a 3rd team. There is a second big deal being worked out as we speak. My source tells me that the teams are negotiating which picks to include.

  • BETCATS Posted: Feb.19 at 1:44 pm
    WTF at anton’s sources.

  • ciolkstar Posted: Feb.19 at 1:48 pm
Does the internets count as sources?

  • Joel O's Posted: Feb.19 at 1:51 pm
Why would the Suns trade Shaq away now?

  • Anton Posted: Feb.19 at 1:58 pm
this sounds like a job for the drama llama

  • chris Posted: Feb.19 at 1:59 pm
    suns aren’t gonna trade shaq

  • BETCATS Posted: Feb.19 at 2:01 pm
Drama Llama and Pee-U Emmu cousins?

  • Izzo Posted: Feb.19 at 2:10 pm
    That link was great,Holly.Thanks.

  • Anton Posted: Feb.19 at 2:19 pm
This post up fails. No mention of CP3′s 36 and 10?
But of course, talking about a Warriors game is more important.

  • Izzo Posted: Feb.19 at 2:21 pm
Yes,because if there’s one thing you can accuse Holly MacKenzie of,it’s ignoring Chris Paul.

  • Anton Posted: Feb.19 at 2:30 pm
or playing street hoops in the rain…

  • Jackie Moon Posted: Feb.19 at 2:53 pm
@Holly – thanks for the link. That is pure and true sportsmanship all around.

  • Holly MacKenzie Posted: Feb.19 at 3:46 pm
Anton, I didn’t SEE Chris Paul’s game. As I said above, when I got home from the Cavs/Raps, everything was finished except for Lakers/Warriors and Suns/Clippers. My apologies for not playing basketball and for missing CP3. I think we all know Chris Paul is one of my absolute favorite guys to watch in the L.

  • Holly MacKenzie Posted: Feb.19 at 3:49 pm
Glad you guys enjoyed the link. It made my night and made me want to hug that entire basketball team for their kindness and compassion!

  • Tariq al Haydar Posted: Feb.19 at 4:18 pm
    Love ya, Holly.
This sentence made my heart smile: “I JACKED THIS OFF of a friend’s facebook profile”

  • Tariq al Haydar Posted: Feb.19 at 4:21 pm
Oh, and please don’t let your Warrior love get in the way of your Laker love. Otherwise I’ll have to weep continuously and then have a light snack.

  • Tariq al Haydar Posted: Feb.19 at 4:24 pm
Awkward as it may be, I was happy to see Tyson Chandler stay a Hornet. They’re one of my favorite teams, even though they’ve been underachieving this season. My sleeper in the West, though, is Phoenix. I’m excited to see them score 2,309 points in two games, even if those two games were against the Clippers.

  • BETCATS Posted: Feb.19 at 5:44 pm
which will happen first: Vince Carter getting traded or Maino dropping his album? If you guessed neither, you are correct!

  • BETCATS Posted: Feb.19 at 7:10 pm
    70! just because….
