The Post Up: Marion Saves Heat

And those Celtics run things in Dallas.

by Holly MacKenzie

Great games for TNT last night. That Bulls/Heat game had a thrilling finish as Wade found Marion for the dunk with 1.1 seconds left, but my favorite from that was seeing Wade lose the ball and then steal it back to give his team another chance to win.

Then I liveblogged the Boston/Dallas game and all I was hoping for was for it to be better than the blowout the Celtics had in Boston over the Mavs. I got so much more than I had expected with the Celtics coming back from 15 down to take the 99-92 victory. This one was filled with technicals and emotion, intensity and drama. It also had a Rondo triple-double.

I don’t think there’s anything that gets me more excited than a triple-double. Of course, 61 at the Garden is exciting, or three-point records and huge dunks are always fun, but a triple-double is just so dominating. I think that’s why I love watching Chris Paul so much. You never know when he’s going to bust out and get one.

The crazy thing with Rondo is, he is such a great rebounder. Before you know it, one quarter is over and he’s already racked up 6 boards, half offensive. He’s a wild one.

What a great game that one was. I thought Dirk had it, and then he cracked and missed a free throw that pretty much sealed the game… For the Celtics.

So, it’s Friday and that means that All-Star Weekend is officially here. I’m hoping that Lang and Ryne have made it to Phoenix by now, or will shortly. Remember to check here early and often for all of the All-Star coverage from our guys in Phx.

Boston 99 Dallas 92

Those Celtics sure know how to keep things interesting and taunt their opponent. While starting off slow, trailing for almost the entire game and falling behind by as many as 15, the Celtics made things interesting in the third as Kevin Garnett got fired up, tangled with Dirk Nowitzki and called for a technical. From there, Doc Rivers received two technicals and was thrown out of the game. Once they were fired up, there was no stopping the Celtics as they outscored Dallas 30-17 in the fourth, to take the come from behind win. While Paul Pierce was solid late, finishing with 31 points, including all of the big shots for the C’s down the stretch, Rajon Rondo had his second career triple-double with 19 points, 14 rebounds and 14 assists.  Dirk led the Mavs with 37 points and Josh Howard had 17 before fouling out in the loss.

Miami 95 Chicago 93

Shawn Marion was the savior for the Miami Heat as the found themselves in a close one with the Bulls last night. While Miami led throughout, the Bulls almost pulled off a comeback in the fourth, and it was a thundering dunk from Marion off of a pass from Dwyane Wade with 1.1 seconds on the clock that gave the Heat the victory. When the Bulls took a one point lead in the final minutes, it was Wade who brought the Heat back, but he also turned the ball over late, giving Chicago a chance to steal the game. The Bulls were unable to take advantage when Wade stole the inbounds pass back, saving the victory for the Heat. Michael Beasley had 21 points off of the bench on 9-10 field goals. Wade finished with 24 points and Daequan Cook added 14. The Bulls were led by Ben Gordon with 34 points, Derrick Rose’s 18 points and 15 points from Tyrus Thomas.

Golden State 105 Portland 98

While the Warriors came out of the gate blazing in this one and led by double figures most of the way through, the Blazers made things interesting in the fourth as they poured in 36 points while holding the Warriors to 25. Brandon Roy dropped in 37 points for Portland but they came up short in the final minutes as the Warriors made their free throws and Monta Ellis hit three big shots to keep the Blazers at bay. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 20 points for Portland and Greg Oden added 8 points and 11 rebounds. Monta Ellis and Stephen Jackson each had 20 points for Golden State, while Corey Maggette added 24 points and Rony Turiaf had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

    L(R).O.N.(DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO)

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Today KG showed loads of immaturity by bumping Dirk, then yapping (while Nowitzki laughed in his face and gave the F-bombs right back, nice) then getting 3 consecutive fouls. Dirk was zee Man, 29 by mid 3rd quarter but hardly any help in the fourth. Might i add: Josh Howard is dissapointing! Loads of stupid decisions and fouls in the 4th. Way to bail out, Josh! PP taking over was amazing.

  • tenorca

Nice to see the Warriors making their annual 10th place push. Attaboys. Ronny Turiaf was effing fantastic, by the way. Still can’t figure why the Lakers didn’t keep him.

  • http://slamonline.com/ Double R

A postup with only four comments? I guess everyone else in headed to Phoenix.

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

Hi riggs. Hi Darksaber. Hi tenorca. Hi Double R.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I wanted to kill Thabo Sefolosha last night. And Vinny, but I guess that goes without saying.

  • tenorca

Vinny has to be the worst NBA coach not named Mike Dunleavy, right?

  • matt the jazz fan

you might get an argument from the host city of the all start festivities, tenorca!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I wanted to almost kill Spoelstra and Wade.

  • matt the jazz fan

um, without the final ‘t’ of course… weekend’s about to start here in belgium!

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

Marion for Jermaine oneal eboy how do you like that?

  • Myung

I’m not sure how many NBA/College/International games I’ve seen in my life… but I’ve never seen a game end where a team steals the ball on an inbounds, just to give it away on the ensuing inbounds play. Back to back inbounds steals… rarer than a quadruple double?

  • tenorca

Man—I think Vinny’s leaps and bounds worse than Porter. I’m working with a pretty small sample size, admittedly, but, really, Bulls or Suns is the proverbial giant douche v. turd sandwich argument.

  • BostonBaller

Who missed free throws during clutch time again? Was it Howard or Dirk? 1 vanishes and the other vaporizes….I guess it’s Avery Johnsons fault. lol

The Wade assist was a real assist unlike most of the assists guys are credited with. Wad passed the joint, I mean ball and Marion dunked it in one forward motion. Assists nowadays are counted even when a guy throwes the ball to a teammate and that guy makes a move or dribble then score from outside.

The NBA: Where fake stats happen just to pad stats…

  • vmcb

JO and Moon to Miama for Marion and Banks! oh snap.

  • vmcb

    yes, Miama.

  • tenorca

To wit: would Porter leave Steve Nash on the bench with 6 seconds left in a tie game? No. Did Vinny leave Rose on the bench with 6 seconds left in a tie game? Yes. Did the man he had in for Rose inbound it to the wrong team, hence losing the game? Yes. I thought Russ was gonna take a toasterbath.

  • Blinguo

Easiest game winner in quite a while by Marion and they ship him out for the other O’Neal. Harsh. Although Shawn hadn’t had much of a year with all those DNP-CD(injury)’s piling up. He was getting back into the fold and now he’s out. Same kinda year for Jermaine. So who’s DWade’s new swingman/slasher/trifecta final piece compliment help for the last year before it all goes kablooey 2010?

  • http://NBA.com The Canadian

    wyh hello there eh

what you get for makin the game winning dunk….
shipped to toronto with marcus banks
    for O’Neal and Moon

    according to espn

    good for miami
get at a legit center and a leaper

raps… get a premadona and a dude who hasnt played all year… but at least they can play bosh barg marion parker calderon … if they want

i grade this trade USELESS untill i see them play 30 games

  • matt the jazz fan

ok fair enough tenorca! have a nice weekend everyone…

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Trade Marion now! Beasley is turning in some great performances of late.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

Well, I’m glad Marion’s short career with the Heat ended up being a game winning dunk on the Bulls. Oh, the irony! ;-)

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

tenorca: Vinny makes Mike Dunleavy look like Red Auerbach.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

Is Jamario Moon any good? I thought he was talked about at some point as being a potentially nice player, but then I the noise quieted. Where’s my man Eboy?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I would have preferred Joey Graham in place of Moon.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Oh…..Finally!!!! More minutes for Beasley….that’s all I’ve been looking for.

  • Myung

You know, pretty soon, we’re going to have to call SLAM, the Worldwide Follower Follower if they don’t start updating news sooner (ouch… I know).

  • http://slamonline.com/online/media/2008/10/slam-radio-the-most-unlikely-preseason-venue/ James The Balla

lol marion just got traded to tdot!!

  • Henkenzo

Marion leaves heat to toronto should be the title…

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

Interesting 2nd half to the season. Can’t wait to see how UD welcomes O’Neal to the team. They gotta arm wrestle or something!

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

Now Joel Anthony and Jamal Magloire can do what they do best…..sit, and Moon will be great with Wade, that might be the best defensive wing combo in the L.

  • Myung

This trade would’ve been a huge story in 2003. In 2009, it’s a big trade but not a blockbuster.

  • Henkenzo

i dont like moon, no intelligent player. he can make shots though

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

And I hope Daequan doesn’t lose any minutes to Jamario.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Hi Cheryl. They’re not done yet….if all goes well.

  • Blinguo

Eboy, does Beasley want those minutes though? He’s seemingly held back only by himself and desire. It will click for him soon enough, when he wants to do it. (that bad press nonsense about work ethic was put to rest/on blast last night’s broadcast) Unlike say D-Rose being forced into huge minutes, except for last night being the only time in memory he was actually benched. What a situation to be benched in too. Or an Oden being monitored with kiddie hands to protect their investment, detrimental to his growth (by getting consistent) or not.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I love Jermaine, but at this point his number should be “?” I hope the Heat crash and burn.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

Okay, E. I’ll wait to see what happens. And enjoy All-Star.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Russ is so nice to foreign teams.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

Russ!!!! Why the hate??? Oh, last night…

  • http://allday-fadeaway.blogspot.com nbk

Russ they gave up almost nothing to get him. Granted Shawn Marion is good at defense, and had that GWD last night but he really has only been holding Beasley’s development back. Toronto just made a complete money trade and have given up on their season. (even though o’neal was not helping that much, wtf do they expect marion to do?……give them 16 million dollars this summer)

  • Blinguo

At least he will be dunked on by one less of the L’s most premier going hard to the rim guys. Jermaine took too many of those already this year, including a delayed reaction trip up that he was thoroughly roasted about by NBA TV’s main man Tues. in house crew. “Like a boxer when he’s knocked out but he’s not yet on the ground!”

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

I wonder how many times a guy’s been traded the day after hitting a game-winning shot? And I’ve always hated the f*cking Heat.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Although I did like Tim Hardaway.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

Russ Limbaugh: “I hope he(at) fails”!!!

  • Blinguo

Also Russ predict how it goes off the top in MIA for him. Prob not pulling a Shaq late career Supermaning, or Mourning in his prime career defining(with Shaq later, doing a only go after the block comedy), but even doing a Lamar Odom 2nd fiddle (playoff) potential w/a buncha pieces(ala 2006′s Voltron ensemble of role guys) missing would be more than they could ask for at this point in his career.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Cheryl: I hate the white guys on the Heat just as much.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Since there’s only one……poor Chris Quinn.

  • http://slamonline.com Russ Bengtson

Blinguo: He could be great (within reason), he could miss the last 30 games of the season. That’s just the thing: I don’t know. It’s a huge gamble, in the sense that Jermaine hasn’t had the most steady track record when it comes to injurie. I suppose it’s less of one seeing that everyone hated Shawn and it’ll give Beasley more minutes. Does this make them any sort of favorite in the East? No. But it could make things interesting if JO stays healthy.

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

Well, I wasn’t really going there, but I see your point. Got a chuckle out of me…

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Maybe….just maybe….if all things go well….the Heat could possibly win 2 games in a first round series.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Eboy, can Beasley be a 3? Because that changes everything. From what I’ve seen so far, he’s a face-up 4. So I don’t know how this trade helps his minutes.

  • Blinguo

Thanks Russ, but at your rate of speed I nearly wanted and expected some quotable 1st impression tank job hilarity more than just “crash and burn.” Something like they’ve fallen down 8 feet now and ain’t getting up. But I do also figure they are gearing up for a ’09 push with such a move. Keep it interesting enough and avoid injury through the Spring into Summer. Make it worthwhile in ’09 when Jermaine is back to close to full strength (no % involved) for his age and decade of injury since he won’t be an All Star lock player anymore this 1/2 of the 00′s.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

I posted my feelings on this trade in another thread.

  • Blinguo

^^Playoffs this year, they couldn’t really do more than maybe scare the Celtics or drudge through a 2-6/3-7/4-5 matchup of course forgot to mention. Gotta keep up with the Joneses’, in this case the Knicks. Bring it back to the late 90′s, doesn’t matter what the seeding matchup is 1-8, Knicks Heat wars. Assuming DWade isn’t biding his time to a sunnier disposition locale. Making moves in this direction may very well make it worth his while and show they want a better franchise sooner if not later.

  • Blinguo

Edit up also in haste to post ^^ * “Without” or “Missing” a buncha pieces / role players from a Voltron Champ 06 squad * Being a more 2nd round burnout Wade rook/Odom renaissance team.

  • Blinguo

2-7, 3-6 seeding. 2009-2010 season. Also, but it doesn’t matter much. Just to avoid any flame nonsense conflict like the other post up about it about who knows what.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I think Beasley is capable of playing the three, in certain matchups…..but if he get’s a little bit of a nastier disposition, and some more weight…he can be a really good 4.

  • http://lastknickstanding.blogspot.com Bryan

What am i the cancer around here now?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Meh.

  • Blinguo

Hey Moon won’t get chopped up by Bosh about defense anymore. Nor by Spoelstra/Wade/or Riley?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Honestly E, if Jermaine can stay healthy, I can see the Heat climbing into the 4th seed. Big if.

  • Myung

The Atlanta Hawks and their fans take exception to your last comment, Tad.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Myung, i’m a Pistons fan, as you are well aware. If I was to be an optimist and fair to my rooting interest, I would say Detroit will get the 4th seed. However, I don’t have much optimism these days.
    -
As for the Hawks, I don’t trust them to hold onto that position. I don’t have any other reason than because they are the Hawks. Sorry. Oh, and sorry Co Co.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Also, if Hawks fans were to take exception, how long would it take for me to apologize to all 3 of you?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

    Barack Obama.

  • Myung

First of all, there are about 300 of us now. Of course between 1999 and around April of last year, there were… 4 of us (let’s not forget about What). And to answer your question… maybe 3 seconds. :-)

  • Myung

I don’t know Tad. We’ve played 52 out of 82 games, and we’re 31-21. That’s 30 games left, and even though we come out of the break with a brutal 5 game Western swing (the circus is in town), we’ve got 13 of the next 17 after that at home (where we’re currently 19-6 at home). Over all, we have 16 of our last 30 at home. Even if we go 17-13 over the last 30 games, that puts at 48-34. It’s not the most impressive record, I know, but I think that should still net us the 4th seed in this conference. Just my opinion.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Ladies and gentlemen….Mr. Optimistic….MYUNG!!!!!!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Funny, the circus has been in Detroit for like 2 1/2 weeks now.

  • Myung

    lol

  • Myung

Tad, November 3rd was when AI was traded to the Pistons. That’s longer than 2.5 weeks, by my math.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I guess I deserve that for my 3:38 comment.

  • Myung

It bears mentioning that after the whole Tarzan incident (and some other comments by other posters) earlier this week, the Post Up has been a little different the past few days, I think…

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    How so?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

Mynug is still the man. That is a real fan right their!

  • Myung

I just felt like her posts were straight business, whereas in the past, she mentioned more personal things about her day/night. Just my observation of the past few days, since the Tarzan episode and especially after what that guy Sab said.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Co-sign, Myung.

  • Blinguo

If the Hawks fall apart, it rests on Mike Bibby, then that conclusion = the Jordan 2009, really really sucks. Then Bibby will tell Joe Johnson to stop wearing them fencing (inspired) high heel shoes.

is it just me or r TNT thursday night games the best ever?
