The Vince Carter/Timmy D Show?

by Marcel Mutoni

Vince Carter’s name will be in trade rumors – and he fully accepts this – all the way up to the Deadline this Thursday, and one of the more compelling destinations for the artist formerly known as Half Man/Half Amazing, would be in San Antonio.

Tim Duncan, his would-be teammate, was asked by the local press for his thoughts on the possibility of playing with Vince.

From the San Antonio Express-News:

Duncan says he would love to have Carter as a teammate, and why not? At age 32, Carter remains one of the NBA’s most productive small forwards, averaging 20.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists. Duncan hedges when the price for Carter reportedly includes Roger Mason Jr., Bruce Bowen, George Hill and Fabricio Oberto.

“I’d hate to see that many guys go,” Duncan said.

“The point of my deal was to try and get a high-caliber free agent in that year,” Duncan said. “I tried to clear some cap space so we could use it.”

Carter, even at age 32, still qualifies as a high-caliber use of such flexibility. Knowing teams that seek to leapfrog the Spurs on their way to the top of the West are losing sleep counting the ways Carter, Duncan, Parker and Ginobili could cause them nightmares is reason enough for Duncan to rest easy.

Gotta love Trade Deadline week.

Duncan, Parker, Ginobili, and Carter would bring pause to all West contenders. Then again, i’m not sure I would want to give up your future PG and Mason, Jr.

  • Andy

There is no way the Spurs would give up that much. Especially not Roger Mason Jnr.

  • k1d Crush

  • http://www.hoopmixtape.com Simon S.Y Lawy

but that would be scary for my lakers…

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

That would be a great move for the Nets.

  • a_whiteman

I hope they can find a deal that works. As much as I dislike vince as a person, he is a great player and deserves a shot at a ring at least once in his career

  • donlaker

tim it is your call , vc for mason might help you,
vince is playing his best ball in a long time.
but bowen is a good stopper ,and mason can hit those corner three’s so, duncan tim , play gm

  • Funkdoc

AND the spurs play slow-ball. Good for quarter, since he’s always walking without the ball.

  • Funkdoc

    good for carter* lost focus…

  • Funkdoc

although he’s actually only good for one quarter too…

  • http://www.freewebs.com/betcats BETCATS

i see it beeing the last 3 for Vince. Roger Mason aint going no where though.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

mmmm… it depends on what vince can give them. if he keeps settling for contested j’s it will be a disaster. then again, with duncan being double-teamed on basically 100% of the possessions, he might not have to take contested j’s.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

Per Yahoo, the Rockets are supposedly still in the Carter mix as well:
The New Jersey Nets and Houston Rockets have exchanged trade proposals and continue to talk, according to league sources and sources close to the Nets. One scenario has Carter and Josh Boone going to Houston for Ron Artest, Carl Landry and Luther Head.

  • Funkdoc

on the other hand, parker would have more assists as Vince shoots from everywhere on the court.

  • Funkdoc

t-mac and carter is like pepsi and dr. pepper. Nice, but just not that

  • underdog

I wouldn’t give up George Hill. Mason Jr. has a nice year so far, but Hill has too much potential.

  • http://hoops4life.com overtime

Carter would be a great addition, but no way they should be giving up that much for him, espech the new mr big shot and an excellent steal in George Hill

  • #6marjons

good movev but keep hill and jr.
bowen is handy for defense but i think he’s worth giving up if it means another championship

  • #6marjons

thats crazy in the time it took to simply type out my piece there was 18 comments

  • http://www.ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com Allenp

Oh goodness. Spurs would be right there with the Lakers if they could get some live bodies to replace all the guys they would lose. That’s the only real problem. They would be killing their bench, and hurting themselves for the future. But, I guess Pop figures he’s going to retire when Duncan retires, so why worry about the future.

  • http://fdklf.com Jukai

Mason and Bowen is too much. One or the other.

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

Just when I was starting to like Vince Carter again…

  • http://hotmail dubldeezy

dude bowen’s coming off the bench and isn’t nearly the stopper he was..he’s well past his prime. the only thing’s they’re giving up is oberto(who’s 33)by the way and mason jr…if you’re the spurs you know that the window of winning another championship is dwindling down with the core of their team…and know that they have to make a big splash to stay in the top 2 teams with the lakers…if S.A. makes this move this WILL put them above the Lakers who are w/o Bynum rest of the year

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

This isn’t gonna happen. It’d be cool, but it isn’t gonna happen. I love the fact that if either Sheed or VC were to come to this squad it’d be lights out for everybody.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Bowen? Their 9th guy? That’s too much? And Hill is nice but they’re not jeopardizing their future by trading him. Parker IS the future. He’s only 26. Oberto doesn’t get off the bench. The only dude I’d hate to see leaving if I were the Spurs would be Mason. He game them 3 huge game winners in half a season against quality opponents. I’d be uneasy with altering the chemistry and the trust that the guys have in him.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

As Allenp said, they’d just need a couple of live bodies. They’d be good 1 thru 7. Hairston still gives 10 mins a game and you start playing Udoka again. (that guy is legit, i don’t know why he ain’t playing)

  • http://allanzuss@yahoo.com Mendel

    Bad move

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Great move for the Nets, indeed. Vince isn’t gonna spend the rest of his career with a rebuilding team, and IMHO the Nets aren’t gonna get better value than this, which if it works out, will give them a really deep, young supporting cast.

  • kane

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

I think the Spurs should do it. It’s not like they’re trading away their entire supporting cast; they’d still have Finley, Bonner, Kurt Thomas… Udoka. The only hole would be at point, but Manu / VC both have the ability to do that. My tired Canadian hate for VC notwithstanding, Vince actually does really well when he doesn’t need to be the de facto leader of the team. With the Spurs, VC can afford to disappear for stretches cuz the other guys’ll pick it up, freeing him to go on scoring binges / hit sporadic game winners every now and then. A really scary thought.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

It boggles my mind that the Cavs aren’t all over this Vince thing. Wally’s expiring, Delonte (only 25), JJ and Kinsey would be a better offer than what the Spurs are willing to give.

  • http://docfunk.blogspot.com Doc Funk

The Cavs acquiring VC is like buying an iPod classic when you already have an iPod touch. Using both at the same time would be counterproductive.

  • http:www.myspace.com/linkstigatorkevin Kevin Wilson

Um … you couldn’t get another guy like Roger Mason in the draft? I mean, the guy was a second-round pick who spent time overseas and played for three NBA teams before arriving in San Antonio.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

only thing that this trade CAN be bad for the spurs is chemistry change and loss of mr big-shot-in-training (and making the PG spot weak again, remember some dude name udrih?). but if this happens, i’ll be watching every spurs game from now on til duncan/pop decide to hang it up. i wonder if the haters are still gonna call spurs boring. in fact can spurs make carter boring?

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Its just not going to happen. Sure we’d like to have him, but we don’t really have any moveable pieces that could match Vince’s salary. This will end exactly like the JR Smith/Corey Maggette to San Antonio rumors from the offseason. The SA Express-News HAS to be one of the worst, if not the worst, newspapers around.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I didn’t read the proposed deal before my first comment. There’s NO WAY the Spurs move George Hill and Roger Mason. MAYBE one or the other along with Bowen (who’d likely be released and resign in 30 days) and Fabricio. Hill has the potential to be Rondo with a better shot and although Mason has been great, the Spurs would be able to fill that void with another shooter more easily. One thing I love about the Spurs is that I know we won’t let ourselves get robbed.

  • Dark

Yeah, this is the ol’ chemistry/talent tradeoff. The Spurs backcourt has a good thing going right now; not sure if they should really mess with the it. On the other hand, I do think they could use a legit center (i.e. what Nazr Mohammed gave them back in the day) to combat the Lakers’ size. But don’t we all wish our team had a legit 7 fter.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

and Z, we don’t play Udoka because he’s garbage. His shot is SO bad and he’s really slow. He’s just too streaky and in the Spurs offense he’s guaranteed open looks when he steps on the floor, which is actually a problem because he misses so many of them. I’d love it if we could throw Udoka into this deal…

  • http://www.bbl.org.uk Josh D

I’m a Spurs fan, and i don’t want VC to come to SA if the deal includes Roger Mason and George Hill, i would also prefer San Antonio went for Sheed instead of Vinsanity becuase we need a Post presence to compliment Duncan i wouldn’t mind if they got rid of Udoka, Kurt Thomas, Bowen and Fabricio Oberto,i don’t want to see any of them go, but thats worth Sheed or VC

  • http://myspace.com/arodakaroman and1ballermj2350

Coming from a Spurs fan, I love would love Vince but dont know if he would fit in to the system. He could take the type of role Derek anderson and stephen jackson had when they were there. But then again, mason Jr and Hill could possibly be spurs lifers if they pan out and be the future for the squad

  • Dubya

Trade VC to PHX for Shaq. Run N Gun it

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

I’m sorry, but where exactly is this Sheed to the Spurs stuff coming from? Did someone just mention it in the comments or is it reported somewhere that the Spurs are interested in him? Just asking because I haven’t heard anything about it from the Pistons side.

  • Dark

Saw the Sheed rumors on HoopsHype a couple weeks ago, but haven’t heard anything recently.

i have a need4sheed. udoka bowen and oberto for sheed, beautiful.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Okay slow your roll, spurs fan. Mason is not THAT good. Not future of the franchise good.

  • http://fdklf.com Jukai

Totally agree Finest Hour, with the exception of Karl Malone, John Stockton, Steve Nash, Jason Kidd, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Dominique Wilkins, Elgin Baylor, Nate Thurmond, Chris Mullin, Reggie Miller, Pete Maravich, Bob McAdoo, Sidney Moncrief, George Gervin, Bernard King, etc.

  • JoeMaMa

You have to assume the Nets will cut one, maybe two of those players….likely Oberto, maybe Bowen. The Spurs then resign one, or both, gear up for the playoffs minus a point guard who wouldn’t see much playoff action anyways. The question is Roger Mason. Will they give him up? Everyone else is expendable. You gotta go with VC.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

according to ciolkstar, the source is unreliable like NY post. i’m not holding my breath.

  • Jacob

the lineup of Ginobili, Duncan, Parker, and maybe Carter would be hella scary for the rest of the west but the loss of mason jr would hurt a lot allinall I hope this does happen

  • riggs

didnt read the comments to make sure but, has anyone else heard the chandler to OKC for wilcox and joe smith?

  • http://www.bbl.org.uk Josh D

1.Mason isn’t future of the franchise good but he’s a good/great role player, one of the best role players in the NBA
2.I just came up with this one in my head, but the perfect trade 4 the Spurs would be Tayshuan Prince, if they can get him at a reasonable Price(without parting with any of the Big Three, or the Spurs 3 best role players Mason, bonner and Hill)the Spurs would get a great defensive player, and the Spurs wouldn’t need to worry about getting rid of Bruce Bowen, also, Prince can play post, which would give the spurs an inside presence to complement the Big Fundamental, and if the Spurs want him too, he can also play at the 3 where they would be left a little shallow after getting rid of Bowen, and Prince can also knock down the 3

  • http://www.bbl.org.uk Josh D

Just been on espn.com (i got bored)says the Hornets are soon going to confirm that they are trading Tyson Chandler to the Hornets for Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox

  • Prison Mike

    Do it.

  • http://www.myspace.com/hemantsbeats what

Trading for Carter makes sense for the Spurs. Taking on his ridiculous contract doesn’t make sense for anyone.

  • http://www.another48minutes.blogspot.com Gerard Himself

    it won’t happen.

  • Richie

    Roger Mason Jr is overrated.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Ciolkstar: Agreed on the Bowen thing. I don’t think Bowen’s “talents” really translate that well on another team; on any other team he might be the 12th man. But on the Spurs he’s a key player. Kinda like how Foreman is stuck with House.

  • Uzi

    highly unlikely…

  • Sarah

Pretty much cosign Josh D at 1:17. Would much rather have Sheed, if anyone. But I’m pretty attached to all the guys, especially the future with George Hill. They can have Ime Udoka. How bout that?

Bad trade. I say trade bowen and finley. mason and hill are 2 young guys they are really going to need to keep this franchise going. Sides SA could use more excitement and youth.

t-mac and carter is like pepsi and dr. pepper. Nice, but just not that
Dr Pepper is the single greatest drink on the planet (after beer and coffee)…soft drink then. Dr Pepper is the single greatest soft drink on the planet.

  • Nashty

There is ZERO chance of winning the championship for the Spurs this trade goes through.

  • kingofsota

The spurs would lose most of their bench production and the nets would be building to be a contender in the future. Being somewhat of a spurs fan, I say that this is a terrible trade.

  • RWallace

VC for Mason Jr. and/or Hill? Makes sense. Spurs will get a better chance to compete for the title this year. As for giving up young role players… The Spurs organization seems to always find a lot of guys that nobody wants and produces for them so it’s not a big deal, but heck what do I know. Sheed to Spurs would be crazy though. Make that one happen instead!

  • simoun

it would be nice if carter went to san antonio, but not good if they lose mason and hill.

    i would say 50/50.

  • BostonBaller

It may nor happen but it would be kind of fun to watch. Vince would have open looks since TD gets doubled. Can you imagine the highlights with VC cutting through the lane and getting passes from Parker, TD & Manny? With TD getting doubled and the wings trying to keep an eye on VC, Manny will have an open lane or 2 to fly through. Vince also hits big game winners so Mason wouldn’t be missed THAT much.

Like I said, it would be fun to watch. Kobe vs VC in a 7 game series ..entertaining…Stern might make it happen. lol

  • ron

hope this idea will be implemented.
the trade will be worthy for Vince, Duncan, the League and fanz.

  • MeloMan13

unless they play the Raptors in every round this trade will not help them

  • data187

the nets will cut bowen and oberto after the trade, so they are only giving up mason and hill.

as good as mason and hill are, they are not all-star level talents.

vc is and even at his age, he can still single-handedly win 1 or 2 games in a 7 game series.

  • marsino

Im a huge spurs fan and I would love to see them get vince carter. But the thing about the spurs is they need to get younger and when you get younger you dont get younger by giving up roger mason jr and geroge hill. If Im the spurs you need to try and keep either roger mason or george hill.

  • tom

Bowen isn’t even starting this season. He’s a great defender, but he is over the hill (no pun intended) in basketball years and is tradable. When Mason is on, he’s on. He’s great to have around in the last 3 seconds of a tie game, but some of those games shouldn’t even be as close as they are in the first place. Oberto’s tradable, and I don’t think many people would disagree. I know the Spurs want another Parker in George Hill, but Parker’s one of the youngest guys on the team…I don’t believe he’s going anywhere for a while. Hill’s a great bench player to have for the Spurs in my opinion, but I don’t think they’ll win a championship with out either a solid big man or Vince Carter. Carter’s got hops and could still relieve some of the pressure from Duncan that a big man could.

  • SpursFan

it would be a great team if vince was in, but as for the bench it would be awful and the roster would be very small. good thing the trade didn’t go thru
