Trade: Tyson Chandler to the Thunder

by Marcel Mutoni

Besieged by injuries all season long, Tyson Chandler’s year has just gone from crappy to ultra-crappy.

Welcome to Oklahoma City, Tyson. We hope you enjoy your stay here. From Thunder Ramblings:

The Thunder has acquired center Tyson Chandler from New Orleans in exchange for Chris Wilcox and Joe Smith, according to a league source with knowledge of the negotiations.

The Thunder will also include the draft rights to Devon Hardin, the 50th overall pick in the 2008 draft.

As Wilcox and Smith are both set to come off the books this summer, this can reasonably be classified as a cash-saving move for the Hornets.

Thoughts?

I know this is already at a 100 posts, but I already called this in the liveblog for the all-star game. So I win.
Moose loses for reporting what SLAM already reported.

well, this obviously doesn’t make them any better, but i don’t see why it’s being called such a bad move. Tyson and CP were more about CP anyway, i’m sure he’ll het Wilcox and Smith their easy shots as well, and i do mean shots, since Tyson could only dunk. It gives them more options than just throwing him an alley, although it was effective, it doesn’t work every time, if it did then they’d just do it over and over. Eventually you need someone who can shoot also, especially with an anemic bench. They might improve a bit if Joe smith can play like last year, but that’s about it.

So if you’ve heard of outsourcing you know they don’t work in America.
    That was my point.

  • L33tSauce08

More reason for Chris Paul to go play somewhere else. West too. Who wants to play for a franchise only worried about saving money? Not competitors like CP3 and West.

i’m surprised NOH would shut their season down at this stage..It seems like the race to pick up off contract superstars at season’s end (or beyond) is outweighing a ‘chip this season..

RV – its called defense. The team has plenty of shooters, it didnt need Tyson for offense. It needed him to protect the paint and crash the boards, and when healthy he does those two things incredibly well. Wilcox and Smith will not replace that.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

i’m with Caleb on this. Tyson was the 2nd most important Hornet last year. CP3 took care of everything on offense and some perimeter defense, and Tyson manned the paint. he was the only defensive presence on the team. i mean david west had that nice block on duncan in the playoff, but you can’t count on him to play D like that consistently.

Maybe the Hornets are thinking like the Pistons, rebuilding slowly while still making the playoffs..Not a bad strategy IMO. Better than selling everybody and starting from scratch like some clubs do.

    Hmmm…
A trade for the sake of making a trade perhaps?
I would have thought moving your only half decent (if overwhelmingly underperforming) centre in a division and conference laced with star bigs should have only come about with ‘phoenix-like’ team issues…

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

The Hornets do need more points out of their frontcourt though, and while their defense should struggle to keep people from attacking the rim, Joe Smith could provide some added scoring. Although, how many more pick and pops can they really run? I still think they need to start playing Julian Wright.

They should’ve never traded J.R. Smith. Can you imagine how sick they would’ve been?

  • http://jamescleaton.ning.com jaymes

Yeah ciolk, West alredy provides what Joe brings to the table, and Wilcox, i don’t know what he’ll do for them?..i think it’s safe to say this was a financial move for the future and nothing but…

  • http://www.where-basketball-b-longs.blogspot.com/ B. Long

Chris Wilcox is having a shaky up and down year during a CONTRACT YEAR. I see Europe in his near future.

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

I have a theory: teams who make their jerseys look better fail.
The Hornets’ new jerseys are gorgeous but they suck, last year their jerseys were crap and they flirted with the conference finals. Same with the Sonics, Raptors, and Suns.

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

@ Z: the Jamison trade won’t happen because he said the Crab Dribble was a travel back in Jan.

  • Clark Kent

The Thunder is going to be hell to deal with in a year or 2. Durant is that dude already, the rest of the league better hope they don’t get Blake Griffin. Even if they don’t they have loads of cap space and they have 5 1st round picks over the next 2 drafts. Yikes!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

i think Tyson’s D was overrated, a guy with his athleticism and length should be swatting like 2 or 3 shots a game and i believe he was like at 1.5 or so….i don’t think wilcox or smith are alot worse defenders and they’re better offensively, so i see it balancing out. I’m not saying it was a good trade, i just dont think it’s such an obvious bad trade..

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

RV i dont think his defense was overrated. To me, that guy was absolute garbage when it came to scoring. CP3 saved his career. I think Chris Wilcox and Chris Paul is a nice combo. CHRIS CAN DUNK. He also can do some scoring too, so i think the Hornets win

and the hornets didnt get any thunder draft picks because?

    because you doubled posted!

  • Caleb

@RV – defense isn’t measured solely by blocks, in fact, I’d say blocks are a pretty minor part of defense. If you follow the Hornets you know how important Tyson was on the defensive end.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

DAMMIT! Just realized that, Jukai. Sorry, y’all . . .

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

    RV’s right though.
I’ve watched New Orleans about 15 times this year, and I haven’t seen Tyson Chandler do anything. He’s been horrible. Not mediocre, not decent. Horrible. In December, Dwight Howard chewed him up and spit him out – Chandler finished with 7 points and 5 rebounds in less than 25 minutes. At the beginning of January, he put up 7 points, 4 boards, and 3 turnovers in less than 25 minutes against Portland. He’s getting paid almost $12 million, and he only mustered double-digits 16 times this season. That’s bad.
For about half that price, there’s no doubt that Chris Wilcox can do pretty much the same thing. In fact, I think that Wilcox plays harder than Chandler does, and even if he’s not as good a shot-blocker, he might be a better post defender. If Chris Paul can work his magic as a leader, and bring Wilcox along as a real contributor on this team, this will prove to be a good business and a good basketball move.
The CP-to-Chandler alley-oop isn’t going to hurt much because it hasn’t been there at all this year. I think that’s partly Chandler’s fault, and partly Byron Scott’s fault for not finding new, creative ways to take advantage of CP’s sensational passing skill.
But with Wilcox on board, there’s no reason that he can’t put up numbers better than the 8 points and 8 boards that Tyson tallied. The biggest question is whether he can get up and block a shot per game. Chandler was only swatting 1.4 per night, which isn’t a huge loss.

  • MalevolentKing7242

Jeez. the thunder got a good decent center for almost nothing. Anybody think this is like the pau trade?

  • http://dillanleuyahoo.com Holy Baller

@ anyone who thinks Wilcox will help New Orleans in any way: he won’t. Wilcox is a lazy @ss who dunks when he’s wide open. He can’t play defense, he can’t shoot at all, he even has a hard time getting his butt down the court because he’s out of shape. And Joe Smith has lost his touch. I think New Orleans was stupid for this, but I’m a big Thunder fan so I’m not complaining. Great move by Presti.

two words about chris wilcox – chris paul and contract year. he’s gonna be a fantasy steal.

  • http://www.kicksonfire.com Anton

    Can’t believe there isn’t a topic for this but…
    Happy 46th birthday, Jordan.

  • kingofsota

wow okc got alot better with this westbrook/durant/green/collison/chandler is a good starting lineup

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jack

Joe Smith will have the best production of his career with CP3. He done the same for David West.

  • Harry J

    Oh well.
Could have been worse, will be interesting to see how this pans out.

A shame to see TC go to the Thunder though.

  • Ronny D

    Seems a strange trade.
Shame to see Tc split from CP3.

  • Harry J

    Wilcox will prove people wrong!

  • Willy G

What’s people thoughts on what J Smith has left in him???

  • Tombomb15

Wilcox is athletic, at least expect some massive alley oops!!! It could work, Smith can shoot and Paul can pass, = points on the board.
This may raise CP3′s assists by 3 a game!

  • CHE

AllenP he actually does work in America because he called from the office located in michigan. But besides the fact he works in AMERICA I hate outsourcing also. Big businesses in order to save money hire people from other countries for pennies to do the job. They Also can’t speak a lick of ENGLISH and are a pain in the balls to understand. But it’s good to see you are still your argumentative self.

  • im just sayin

i has reason to agree with this move…let me explain……the hornets lose a great shot blocker and rebound but if bryon scott work the minutes right the team defense just improved alot. remember chris wilcox is a good team defender and just think dwest cp3 and joe smith….. pick andd muah!@#$ing pop. joe smith is a quility guy for now .. so it dont look like the hornets is tanking the season and now they can sign another big man and a nike bookbag….im just saying

  • donlaker

i hope tyson has a chip on his shoulder. and is able to play some games this year , the thunder is /will be, a sick team to deal with , youth and length and ffast guards , go thunder…..
memeo to cp3 : dont shut it down yet despite what the owners think……

  • http://nyer.sosblog.com Be A Real Fan

Even tho its almost at 150 and I know no one reads this far down…I got to put my vote in for NOH. I think you traded one C (Chandler) for two PF/C’s. Wilcox is bigger and stronger than D West so if he comes off the bench at least he’ll present a different look than West. And Joe Smith won’t make bone headed defensive decisions. Joe Smith’s pinky can pass better than Chandler so he’ll keep the ball moving and it won’t feel like 4 on 5 basketball everytime the Hornets get the ball. I see what everyone sees in terms of OKC getting an established big man and filling that huge hole but if the NOH are going to make a push they need their big men healthy. Its a good trade for both IMO.

LATE BREAKING NEWS! tyson chandler “failed” his physical and the trade was rescinded! on purpose much? knowing chandler, he prolly thought he was screwed when he got traded. nowhere else is he going to average 8 and 8. ughh i wish he was averageing 9 and 12 like he was a couple years ago. anyways what do you guys think?
