Carl Landry Discusses the Shooting

by Marcel Mutoni

Forget the fact that he’s expected to miss very little time after getting shot a couple of nights ago, Carl Landry is thankful and lucky to be alive.

Landry spoke publicly for the first time yesterday about his ordeal, and according to the Rockets forward, the shooting was likely a case of mistaken identity. It was also an unimaginably harrowing experience.

The Houston Chronicle reports:

“I could have been dead,” Landry said. “The shooter was 10 yards or less away. I’m 6-9 and I had a bright shirt on. I don’t know how he missed, but thank God he did and he hit the lower part of my leg. Yeah, definitely, I could have been dead. And you guys … would be talking about the funeral that you were probably going to go to in a couple of days. I’m blessed and lucky to be alive.”

“I was sideswiped once and turned around,” he said. “Hit me again on the other side. I ran into a big street light. The car was totaled at the time and I knew something was going on, like they were looking for somebody. Both of the guys got out of the car. I tried to plead my case, saying I’m not the guy they were looking for. But immediately they start shooting. The second shot hit me in the left calf.”

“I ran about six blocks. After they fired two shots, one of the guys chased me for about a block. I was able to outrun the shooter and I hid in between a house and a fence. I was so frightened, so I started to knock. I was ringing doorbells like crazy. One person came down and said he was going to call the police. He said he was going to call 911. I saw a cop car drive by about 20 minutes after he said that. I went up to the cop car and they helped me. I feel good just to be alive, blessed at the same time. The situation that happened was really scary. It could have happened to anybody. I’m just happy to be here.”

Unreal.

Thank God for everything, and that we’re safe. Landry is very, very lucky.

Thank God for him being safe & alive.

Thank God he’s alive you dont ever wanna see a man gunned down in the street for no reason, but if he would’ve fired back. ESPN would’ve ran a whole show on why he had a gun and was out there in the first place and blown it out of proportion

dayummm… much respect to that dude…

when i first heard about the shooting i thought he was just an innocent bystander that got hit wit a stray bullet… but man he was fully being chased n shieeeet. Guess this gives him motivation to get to ALL-STAR status… i mean come on… ain’t no way D WADE or LEBRON gon’ get mistaken for somebody else… HAHA… ;-)

It’s good he got away, but there’s no way in hell that this is a case of mistaken identity. They were probably racing or something and Carl probably pissed the dude off so he up and pulls out a piece.

Thank the Lord your ok Landry… Glad to see you still alive.

  • nashty

That’s some Soprano sh*t right there….. Thank God he’s OK.

G-baby, there’s no way they were racing. Landry had just left his home, was still on his block and going north, the other car was going south.

@ RV ==> I’m not a fan of the fuzz, so I can’t really buy the whole, “Landry was losing blood and lost track of time”-thing. I gonna guess he was wearing a watch. 20 minutes for the Ho’ PD to respond to “shots fired” is inexcusable. The cops prolly just zoned the neighborhood for slow- to no response.

  • jerseyboy

Thats messed up,the guy who called the cops probably made Landry wait outside in a bush until the cops came.I’m sure the cops didn’t get there no faster than 20 minutes also.

wow, what are y’all ex-cons? Not all PDs are the same. You can’t buy that Landry was scared and that made time seem longer than it was, but you’re “gonna guess he was wearing a watch”? That’s less likely than what I was assuming, who wears a watch casually anymore when everyone has a cell? There’s a police station just over half a mile from there, i’ve had neighbors call for a noise disturbance around the same time fram and they show within 15-20 mins for that and I dont live too far from Landry.

Carl Landry now gets to b*tchslap everybody on the Rockets if they say they’re hurt.

he is a lucky guy , i’ve been in firearm (shootings)situations on the mean streets of los angeles ,and cops treat everybody like they are the criminals (the first question i was always asked, what gang are you from)
i know how this brother feels.
and one thing i did learn, is that at 1am to 4am
the only people on the streets are the criminals, the victims, and sometimes the police
good luck carl hope you help the rockets get out of the 1st round

“He’s not THAT bad of a person.”

Yeah he’s got a few hundred thousand deaths on his hands but he’s not *that* bad…

  • ktokyo

He’s in good company. Penny Hardaway also got shot in the calf and look how his career ended up.

  • chintao

@ RV ==> I’m not a con, but thanks for the bump in credibility.
People wearing a watch is less likely than a mental time-warp? Naw, man. Ballers, especially, like to bling timepieces.
Also, not all POLICE OFFICERS are the same, but ALL POLICE DEPARTMENTS ARE THE SAME. It is inevitable that there will be an institutional problem inherent in any organization that defines itself through its suspicion of others. “To serve, protect, and break a ni&&a’s neck.”

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

chintao, you’re just full of stereotypes, arent you? all ballers like to bling timepieces? All PDs are the same? First, Landry isn’t you’re typical “baller”, the guy drove a chevy tahoe and hardly ever wore bling, if any. And even if there was a problem internally in all PDs, doesn’t mean all dispatchers and all officers are the same.

  • chintao

RV, you’re the guy who called me a con. That’s a stereotype. If you read carefully what I wrote above, you will see that I say that all police officers are NOT the same, but all PD’s are. That’s my opinion. If you have had a different experience, I would adjudge you to have been fortunate. Some of us are not so lucky.
