Carl Landry Shot in Leg

by Ryne Nelson

Upon returning to Houston late last night, Landry was picking up some fast food when his car was side-swiped. As he got out to investigate the damage, shots fired from a car driving by, the second of which hit his calf.

The Houston Chronicle has the report:

Houston Rockets forward Carl Landry suffered a gunshot wound to his lower leg early this morning in a possible drive-by shooting or failed robbery near downtown, police said.

Landry, 25, was released after treatment at Memorial Hermann Hospital. A team spokesman said he suffered a flesh wound and is expected to be out of the lineup for one to two weeks.

The important news is that Landy’s OK–he was treated for a flesh wound and released from the hospital. But, all things considered, Landry got lucky. The gunshot was not life-threatening and it’s not even season-ending.

He’s lucky he’s alive – not that his season wasn’t cut short. That’s terrible news.

  • Fred34

WTF?!? Fast food, side swipe, gun shots? Remind me not to move to Texas, god gawd!

  • nate james

    thats so crazy!

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Wow, no jokes here, dude’s lucky he’s okay!

  • vtrobot

wow. i know that athletes/”stars” get a lot of heat for wanting to carry a weapon, but man, i might too if people were side swiping me and taking shots at me. we’re talking about potential death here. for what? that’s some messed up garbage.

  • Randy Brown

Where was Ron-Ron at the time? I’m presuming he was open during last night’s game and Carl didn’t pass him the ball. That’s the way to teach them Ron

  • WhaHuh

I heard it occurred in New Orleans

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

@WhaHuh, it definitely happened in Houston. The team got in just after midnight. What I’m wondering, though, is why anyone would want to shoot Carl Landry?

  • Drew

It’s a gun-crazy world, and we are just trying to stay alive in it.

  • Si

Dayumn…Landry’s been impressing me recently…glad he’s ok and he’s not out with a season-ending injury.

  • http://slamonline.com Holly MacKenzie

Truly horrific. Thank goodness Landry is okay. Very scary stuff. Thinking of Carl and all of the Rockets.

  • Orlando Green

    Were they aiming at him?

  • AlbertBarr

Here’s to a speedy recovery for Carl. Keep on doin’ your thing when you get back.

I blame the economy…”Damn,n****s wanna stick for my paper!”

I wonder if he shouted, “‘Tis just a flesh wound!”

”I’m presuming he was open during last night’s game and Carl didn’t pass him the ball. That’s the way to teach them Ron.”

Come on dude, lets not joke around about something like this…dude it lucky to be alive.

F*ck. That’s so bad. Lucky he got out of that with his life. Makes one rethink the gun possesions/discharges by other athletes in public (jax, burress etc). Heal up well, Mr. Landry.

  • adams

Yeah, him having a gun would have totally made the bullet think twice about entering his leg. God bless America…

Lang just made me lol.I will never forgive him.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

i’m glad he’s ok, but he needs to move. He lives in an area of downtown where anything can happen. Most players live in better areas, better protected.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

“There was blood everywhere, all over the trails, all the way up to the front door, as you can see,” he said. “He went to each of the neighbors’ houses. The reason I know is because I heard the dogs barking at 4:30. Also, a neighbor came out this morning as I was rinsing off the blood, said that someone rang his doorbell at 4:30 this morning, saying, ‘Let me in. I’ve been shot’.” That neighbor didn’t let Landry in, as he couldn’t tell who it was.
“(Landry) jumped over my fence and tried to get to my front door,” the witness continued

  • MooButter

Texas isn’t that bad. Just don’t move to Houston.

  • Sebastian B. O. Bunionstow, esq.

Mexican drug cartel no doubt. Thank God, Carl is okay.

  • Randy Brown

Ok my bad. But something doesn’t sound quite right about this

  • Jess

glad hes okay, hope he gets back to full strength very soon.

  • niQ

    1) shouldn’t just ordered delivery. 2) get well soon. 3) 1 to 2 weeks recovery? is it just me or does that sound miraculously quick for a gunshot wound?

    damn ….

hahahaha lang, that was a great comment.

its good to hear landry is okay.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Damn, this is scary. Especially because I’m moving to Houston in like 4 months. If RVs quote is accurate their may have been some funny business going on though…

  • Cizzo

Landry is a good person thankfully a higher power was looking over him recover fast Karl!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Niq, i’m sure a lot of places dont deliver at 3am, if any. And it’s a flesh wound, that’s why its only 1-2 (actually 3) weeks.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

ciolkstar, i think Landry just panicked, he probably didn’t know it was just a flesh wound from the shock of it all, might have just ran after that just to get away from the scene, not knowing if they were coming back, getting off the car, etc. Landry lives in a bad side of downtown that’s on it’s way up, with new luxury townhomes here and there and he lived in one of them, so that was his mistake.

  • Joe

Carl Landry got shot in the leg, and will prolly return to the court sooner than T-MAC……..thats just sad!!!!!!

  • kracka

Shot in the leg… I told him to stop hanging out with Plexico.

Just another reason not to visit Houston…

  • http://iballforreal.blogspot.com Trey

Houston isn’t THAT bad. Just don’t be downtown by Third Ward at 4 in the morning. I’ve lived here all my life and I won’t even do that. But you can get shot anywhere in any city at any time. Get well, Carl.

  • http://iballforreal.blogspot.com Trey

Dammit, I’ll say it. Houston hasn’t been the same since Katrina. Take from that what you will.

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

Obviously this was Tracy McGrady’s fault.

  • http://www.obviated.blogspot.com nick

All the people talking sh!t about houston aren’t entirely in the know…RV is right–looking at where this all happened in the Chronicle article, Carl makes his home in a quasi-gentrified, but still shady, area near downtown. At 4:30 in the morning, driving a nice car and showing obvious signs of wealth(EG being a 6’9″ nba power forward), it’s not the sort of place i’d want to be. This kind of thing can happen in any big city in the states given the situation. Get off houston’s nuts.

  • http://www.obviated.blogspot.com nick

And ciokstar, you’ve got nothing to worry about. Unless, that is, you have some reason to be in the 3rd or 5th ward late at night (like, say, buying crack), in which case, you’re on your own.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Still, one can’t deny that this happened in Houston, and hasn’t happened anywhere else. It happened in a state with some of the most lax gun laws, and in the city with the most crime and violence in that state.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Well, I am moving to Houston to attend Law School at U of H, which isn’t in the nicest neighborhood and I’ll be living at a new graduate student housing (Calhoun Lofts) that’s basically right on campus… BUt yeah, I probably won’t have much time for crack with all the reading.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

“You should have choosen McDonalds, b!tch!”

  • http://www.obviated.blogspot.com nick

I may also be at UH in a year or so for grad school. Enjoy it. Go to a dynamo game. Also, don’t get shot.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

yeah, but a lot of it had to do with the setting. If Carl lived where other players live then this wouldn’t be as likely because it’s easier to notice a suspicious vehicle/driver/activity. You don’t just happen to be driving be in those areas, you either live there or are visiting someone who does. Also, wealthy residences mixed in with a bad side of town like that is just asking for trouble eventually. Add the fact that his street is fairly empty, not much traffic or people walking around, even during the day, and townhomes don’t promote activities outside. You’re probably going to always be inside of it, like locked down. Perfect example is the neighbor who didnt open the door because he couldnt see who it was. All that makes it the perfect location to find someone with money, with no one around or neighbors looking out the window that could be potential witnesses.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

yeah UH isn’t far from where this happened. Usually though they only get car robberies, vandalis, some rare muggings. The only big crime i can think of within the last several months, is that homeless man someone shot. He was sleeping overnight at bust stop within the UH campus. where are you moving to houston from?

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

RV is smart. But overall, I think its a good thing that there is some gentrification/development in Downtown Houston and around the university.
Nick: Whats a dynamo? I prolly will try to go see the Cougars play Memphis or something next season.

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

I’ve lived in Austin for the last 5 years, but I’m from San Antonio.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

what’s a dynamo?? Wow MLS is less popular than i thought. the houston Dynamo, MLS champs back to back and like 4 times in the last decade i think. They play their games at the UH football stadium, but should get their own place within the new few years.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Have you seen the improvements they have coming at UH? I wish i would have been born a decade later. They’re planning some major improvements in the next few years, especially to enhance student life. I wish I would have gone to law school because a kinesiology degree only helps me argue with some knuckleheads in here. That’s turrible.

According to Senior Officers D.W. Arnold and R.A. Moreno of the Houston police homicide division, Landry was driving southbound on Leeland with a female passenger when a gray Honda Civic, traveling northbound, swerved into Landry’s lane and sideswiped his sport-utility vehicle.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

Landry made a partial U-turn near Palmer Street and the Honda also turned around and again struck Landry’s SUV, causing it to hit a wooden utility pole and stop, the officers said.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

After Landry got out, two men got out of the Honda and one of them pulled a pistol from his back pocket and fired twice, police said. After being hit, Landry ran for help, they said.
The two men ran after Landry for a short distance before giving up and running away, police said. The woman in Landry’s SUV was not injured, they said.Landry described the attackers as Hispanic men in their early to mid-20s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 150 to 160 pounds. They had short black hair and wore all-black clothing, he said.

  • http://www.obviated.blogspot.com nick

RV-i’m applying for UH’s MFA in creative writing program, which probably isn’t really more useful. I hear it’s getting nicer. I’m not a huge soccer fan, but dynamo games are fun as hell. ciokstar–that area of downtown IS getting steadily nicer. And austin is awesome.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

so it turns out this could have been really bad, they actually chased Landry, apparently the fence landry jumped was 6 feet high, which is crazy after being shot in the leg..

  • http://sjsu.edu davidR

damn, fired twice right off the bat and chased him? sounds like they weren’t just trying to rob him

  • http://www.obviated.blogspot.com nick

wow. i hadn’t heard that detail. that’s scary as hell. It’s also pretty pitiful that they couldn’t run down a guy who they’d just shot in the leg.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

i actually grew up in the east end, which is the closest predominantly hispanic area to Landry’s home, so i’ll definitely be looking for any sketches released, i wouldn’t be surprised if i recognized them…that being said, i too am in my 20s, with short black hair, 160 lbs…juuuust greeat…

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Holy sh!t. The rest of that story is crazy. I kinda thought it wasn’t just a drive by bullet that just happened to catch him, because I suspect he would’ve just driven himself to the hospital. Man, thats really scary, and I hope Landry recovers ASAP. I’m just glad those thugs didn’t go after the girl in the car with him.

My family has met Carl Landry on several occasions, at team functions. He is an engaging, outgoing young man, the kind of kid that you like to see do well. I am truly sorry to hear about this, and I wish him a speedy recovery.

I don’t like guns, but I am coming realization that it we all may force to carry them to protect our selves from the predators who are already armed.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I wonder if they knew who he was then…? I think they might have. You would easily recognise a 6’8 basketball player from your local team surely.

  • L33tSauce

6’9 actually. and yeah. I like Carl Landry. He’s getting 9 and 5 in limited time on a contending team. not bad.

  • youngmuggsy

As already pointed out by adams, carrying a gun doesn’t stop bullets from penetrating your skin. I’m glad I don’t live in the states.

Get well soon, Carl Landry! The Rockets need you back, but take your time and get mentally/physically healthy. Thank God it wasn’t a serious injury.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

they sideswiped, shot twice off the bat, THEN ran after him, but left the woman alone? Was this really random or a hit attempt? Bad neighbourhood or not they went after the guy with a vengeance. RV, anything in the story about what happened to the suv or the girlfriend?

  • http://www.Slamonline.com CP34MVP

No Joking.. Get well son Carl.. Texas :(

    son???? soon*

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

just found some new info, they still havent said who the woman was, but apparently Carl AND the woman took off running after they were shot at and landry was hit. They say the shooters chased them just for a bit, then abruptly stopped and ran off. So it sounds like it was just an attempted robbery gone bad, they didn’t count on Landry running away and then realized it wasn’t worth a long chase, so they freaked and ran off. That would explain why he was shot in the calf, you’d think at close range they’d aim higher if they wanted to kill him. Probably warning shots. They also left their car behind, so police are searching it. I’m assuming they left the SUV untouched as well. I guess a better question right now is if they knew who he was or not prior to hitting his vehicle. If they did, were they following him? How else would they know he’d leave at that time?

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com/ RV

oh yeah, Landry was wearing sandals, and when he took off running he actually ran out of his sandals. A nearby resident who heard shots later came out, found the crashed vehicles, some blood…….and Landry’s sandals.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

If all your info is legit RV, good looking out on this mess. Good to hear that Carl didn’t abandon his ladyfriend.

  • youngmuggsy

Unless you have your gun drawn at all times, a gun isn’t going to stop someone shooting at you. Human reaction time isn’t faster than a bullet.

  • giogolo

    crack-induced gang robbery(failed) thank God.

  • little_black_sambo

Good knowledge RV, I got the same from local reports, way to set people straight. He also has a dislocated finger. I have driven around all areas of Houston late at night and it doesn’t seem that dangerous. Of course I’m strapped, no not really, well maybe sometimes, no not really. If anyone is ignorant enough to think that this typifies a Houston or Texas event then don’t come here, we don’t need any more ignorant people. We have our share.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

and the bullet would have to richochet off your gun or something similar so that it wouldn’t sink into your soft flesh….maybe the bullet from their gun when fired could go up the barrel of your gun…? that would stop it…wouldn’t it? maybe it might wreck your gun though. and then you would need to get a new gun…try a-mart…but they could fire a second shot almost straight away… you would have to run away, maybe thats what Carl did?!
