Don Nelson’s Ultimatum for Jamal Crawford

by Marcel Mutoni

There are subtle, nuanced ways to let people know they’re no longer welcome. And then there’s Don Nelson’s approach to things. Nellie doesn’t do subtle or nuanced.

If Nellie has his way, Jamal Crawford won’t be in a Warriors uniform for very much longer.

From the Contra Costa Times:

According to multiple team sources, Warriors coach Don Nelson told guard Jamal Crawford that if he doesn’t opt out of his contract, Golden State would trade him this offseason. This conversation, according to one of the sources, happened a day after the Warriors’ loss at the Los Angeles Clippers on Feb. 23.

Crawford said he still has not decided whether he would opt out, maintaining his focus is on “helping us win some games and finish the season strong.” He has two years and just shy of $20 million remaining on his contract after this season. But he has the option to terminate his contract after this season.

This warning, according to the report, happened on the same day that Nelson informed Crawford that he’d be getting occasionally benched in an effort to develop some of the team’s younger players.

For what it’s worth, Warrior upper management says this is just Nellie being Nellie, and his stance does not represent how they feel about Crawford.

It’s not you, it’s your agent.

Does Nellie remember saying that this morning?

I think we can safely assume that Crawford will not opt out of his $20 mill contract and Don Nelson will trade him for another 2-guard chucker (Rashad McCants, come on down!).

  • niQ

wow that’s balls and a half. i remember he was so excited to join this team.

  • niQ

its ok crawford, come join the raptors!

  • Harlem_World

    Don Nelson has gone senile.

Someone bring him back to the east coast, so I can see him play again. Philly would be nice …

Don Nelson has history of doing things like this to his star players:
Chris Webber,Baron davis and now Jamal.

how come when a players asks for a trade they’re labeled a malcontent, but when coaches like nelson and d’antoni bench good players in there prime (i thought eddy curry was finally getting it) everyone has the “coach knows what he’s doing” attitude? I guess these brothas really are just CATTLE.

Don Nelson gets away with a lot of shady, unprofessional stuff, simply because he talks to the media regularly.
    Just saying…

@weezy: Curry was never a good player. He had NO prime. Think about it like this. If the NBA is a “business” like everyone says, then a player asking for a trade is like a worker demanding to be switched to the competition. It just doesn’t work like that

Whats wrong with them? Crawford is, in my mind the best player on the team and keeping him on the floor will teach the younger players more than when he’s on the bench and there on the court

What an absolute idiot….I actually have nothing else to say on this, other than he’s a total douche.

If anyone watches the game closely you can see that Crawford looks over to the bench when Jackson or Maggette goes on a “I SHALL NOT PASS” binge and knows they cant keep him around .

Crawford was shooting over 40% from both three and two before he was traded to the Warriors and averaging 20 ppg .He openly accepted the need for him to play pg for the Warriors but soon realized that Nelson let Jackson and Maggette do whatever they wanted . You cant run a a team when you have 2 guys in the lineup who at any moment wont pass get the rebound and come down and shoot. Crawford had just left a team(knicks) who had finally gotten it when it comes to passing and sharing the ball to a team with two guys who are getting their chance to be “the man” .

Crawford is not without his faults though but if really wants to drop some of the labels on him he may have to opt out and take a MLE deal from a contender which in 3 seasons he can go for a nice 2 year extension at the age of 31 instead of playing out his prime years on a losing team as part of Don Nelsons weird yearly character studies.

Crawford has more holes in his game than Swiss cheese. He would have to be a fool to walk away form that contract. In today’s climate is there another GM dumb enough to give him $10mill per?Probably. But no one is going to win with him being their star.

  • thesubwayconnection

Josh D, better than Jackson? I think not. Prettier, definitely, but not better.

  • http://www.pullupjumper.blogspot.com Zoomy575M

Did Nellie confuse him with Monta Ellis?

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Crawford, don’t go to the Bobcats…
Anyways, thesubwayconnection says Jamal is pretty.

majorleads, maggette is the only one who doesn’t pass. jackson moves the ball very well these days.

  • donlaker

jamal the clippers could use your skills but they already have a broken bong (b dizzle)

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

    Crawford come to PHX.

  • Jack

Crawf and Jax actually try to move the ball around pretty well I think. It’s Magette that seems to actually have the ball magnetised to his hands whenever on court.

  • Sin

How are you going to say the guy thats averaging 6.5 assists a game is not passing the ball? I can concede that at times Jax will shoot the ball when he should pass.. but sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. U cant praise him one game for taking and making that shot and crucify him the next for missing it.

Also Nellie never did anything to push Baron out, Baron leaving was all Rowell

As a Warriors fan, I hope Jamal stays, but if he’s going to leave it means we can probably chase a proper pg like Baron, cause thats what we need. Whatever about all that Warriors need 2 play defence stuff.. we made the play offs with no D and a good PG, so if its a choice of moving one player and gettin a good pg or gutting the team cause we have maybe 4 players who can play D.. I know what im gonna choose

cmon nellie, don’t you see Jamal fits your team.? fast ball playa with good shooting hands!

  • DON

I AGREE WITH NELLIE CRAWFORD SHOULD OPT OUT OR BE TRADED NEXT YEAR! MAYBE NELLIE SAID IT A LITTLE HARSH TO CRAWFORD BUT THAT’S JUST THE WAY HE IS. I LIVE IN THE BAY AREA AND I WATCH ALMOST ALL THE GAMES! CRAWFORD IS VERY INCONSISTENT AND HES NOT A GOOD DEFENDER! HES ALWAYS BEEN IN A LOSING TEAM AND I DONT THINK HE PLAYS TO WIN! HES GOOD AT DRIBBLING AND SHOOTING WILD SHOTS!! HES A LOSER!! ALWAYS REMEMBER HE WENT TO HIGHSCHOOL TO THE PROS MAYBE THATS WHY HE HAS THAT MENTALITY OF JUST LOOKING GOOD ON THE COURT AND NOT UNDERSTANDING WHAT IT WILL TAKE TO BE A WINNER!
