Dwight Howard’s Preferred 1st Round Foe: Detroit

by Marcel Mutoni

It’s only natural (and fitting), I suppose, to want to beat the team that’s given you so many problems in years past.

Dwight Howard knows who he wants to face, and beat, in the postseason this season. Detroit Pistons, come on down!

From ESPN:

Howard doesn’t want to see Chicago, Philadelphia or Miami in the first round of the playoffs. He wants Detroit, which has won eight of nine games in eliminating the Magic from the playoffs the past two years.

“Hopefully, we play Detroit again,” Howard said earlier this week. “That’ll be good for us because we have to get over that mental hump. Those guys have beaten us two years in a row and they’ve left a bad taste in our mouths. So hopefully this year, it’ll be different.”

Dwight and the second-seeded Magic might get their wish, too, as the Pistons moved back into seventh place last night following a home win against the Sixers.

A year or two ago, Howard would’ve never uttered such a bold statement, but with an 18-game gap in victories between Orlando and Detroit this season, it appears safe to say that the Magic’s Playoff demons are about to exorcised.

    Foolish.

  • http://www.droseroy.com airs

they’re not your older brother’s pistons though.
that team tht beat them deserved to beat them.
this pistons team…eehhhh not so much.

  • Clockwork

Didn’t Detroit sweep the season series this year?

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ TADOne

    Indeed Clockwork.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Uhm…..this could turn out to be interesting after all.

  • Prison Mike

I’d rather see Detroit knock out Cleveland.

I’ve said all along, the only chance Detroit has in the 1st Round is if they somehow draw Orlando and avoid Boston or Cleveland. While i’m sure the Magic will give them a tough series, I like the Pistons chances very much against them.

    It will be interesting

Pretty weak to go out and say that you ‘want’ a team that is currently sitting 5 seeds below you. Nevertheless, I think that the Pistons might want Orlando, too

  • http://thesportsdiaryonline.blogspot.com Roy

That match-up would be worth watching. :D

  • http://nicekicks.com MeloMan13

sureee. he wants to play them when they’re glory days are done.
where was this when Detroit was a legitimate NBA team?

  • vtrobot

I would take Detroit over Orlando. Like the Suns or the Rockets of recent years, Orlando still seems like a team that isn’t going to get it done when it matters in the playoffs. Sorry Houston and Phoenix fans.

smh poor dwight. I love his game (boards and blockin) but hasn’t he learn that sheed has his number?! He can’t win a series against detroit w/o jameer nelson. Detroit is too quick for orlando.

  • Erik

Ima orlando fan, an i know what dwight is sayin. I bet he figures, if they can finally beat detroit, they can have what it takes to take them all the way to the championship. I like the fact that he welcomes the challenge, although im a lil bit worried of a 1st round upset :(

  • Tuomas

Young people sometimes say stupid things. One former Magic star learned his lesson against Detroit the hard way. I’m pretty sure there’s not one soul in the Pistons organization that wouldn’t be giddy about getting Orlando in the first round.

  • Tuomas

Oh. And Marcel, you Piston hater you, that last sentence in your story is amazing.

  • niQ

Be careful what you wish for. and with that.. GOOD LUCK! TOO BAD MY RAPTORS WON’T BE IN THE PLAYOFFS

  • http://yahoo Ernst Belony

it would be heard for olando

  • Matt

Man these aint my daddy’s pisto…. wait these arent my pistons either

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Maybe this’ll be what it takes to make the Pistons play like they actually give a sh1t.

  • https://twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Their playoff slogan: “Weeeee suck at basketbaaaaaaaall”

  • http://www.nba.com JE

I’m with TAD on this one..as a pistons fan, I’m hoping for Orlando in the first round.

-ooooooooooooooooooh oooooh i chooooose you baaaaaaaaaaybe- BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR DWIGHT

  • Sammycobra

With a healthy Rasheed the Pistons should be able to eliminate Orlando out of the 1st round…Detroit will not survive the second round..

    ECF: Cleveland and Boston…..nice series.

    Cleveland the way?

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Haha. Way to light a fire under them Pistons. If they actually meet in the first round, Dwight might eat those words.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Once the playoffs start, regular season records mean squat beyond ephemeral things like home court advantage. The most important thing remains what happens on the court. And on-court, Detroit has a definite matchup advantage. The results prove it – Orlando just can’t seem to beat them, regular and post- season, for the last coupla years.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

I LOVE this attitude. Past players always said, you have to beat the best to be considered the best. Well even if Detroit isn’t anywhere close to being considered the best, the core of that team threw the magic out of the playoffs two years in a row. The fact that Dwight wants a piece of them shows the fella has fierce heart in that massive chest. I love it. i might start taking him seriously as a player after all.

  • whooo!

despite the difference in games, hasn’t THIS YEAR’s detroit team had orlando’s number as well?

  • http://www.nba.com/suns Dacre

If I was Orlando I wouldnt want to play detroit in the first round…that issue with the ‘mental hurdle’ not only is something that they want to get rid of…but at present it’s something that Detroit can use right now going into a first round match-up with Disney Magic…You’ll have to be careful Dwight because you just might get your wish on this one (I call it the “Agent Zero Factor” – they got the Cavs three years in a row as a match up, on paper it always looked like they could handle it but nah…). My honest opinion is that if there is going to be ONE UPSET this playoffs…its the Orlando – Detroit series.

  • Big Marv

Somewhere ‘Sheed is smiling. Get well soon Pistons.

  • NBA fan

i always find it kinda funny when people say comments the other team is supposed to have a “fire lit under them” or play better for extra motivation , does that mean if no one says anything ,players an teams an teams dont have any motivation to do there best against one another ? ( sarcasm ). Am i the only who feels its kinda silly?

  • Manumaniac

Who’s gonna guard Rip Hamilton? He can’t be shut down by any of Orlando’s shooting guards.

  • luke

Courtney Lee will be okay, until Rip starts to swing elbows, scratch people with his purposely long nails..and all around be a dirty player. As a Magic season ticket holder,I gotta believe in Magic!Blue & White Ignite!!

  • truthteller

Orlando don’t want Detroit! They’re just talking! They don’t want us! They ain’t ready!

  • vonkers

Sheed Gaurds Dwight straight up and holds him to pedestrian numbers at best EVERY TIME. With out a double on Dwight, Orlando has no offense. Nobody else can create offense on that team except Jameer Nelson, but oh wait…He’s not playing. Detroit 4-1 in that series.

  • Kozmic

LeBron did that a couple of years ago. Please people the Pistons are way out of being calling shots on. Dwight focus on some boards come the post-season a-hole. You center of an excuse for T-Mac.

  • vonkers

I have no idea what you just said Kozmic… a little grammar goes a long way…

  • Kozmic

A lil doobie makes your grammar take a shortcut vonkers. But hey all I’m sayin is Dwight aint Sh*t!

  • http://www.nba.com/suns Dacre

Rip Hamilton’s nails are longer than John Butler’s (of John Butler Trio fame)..!
