Indiana Pacers: Bleeding Money

They can’t even afford the rent: “The Indiana Pacers are losing about $30 million this season and cannot continue to shoulder the millions of dollars it costs to operate Conseco Fieldhouse. That was the announcement Monday to the Capital Improvement Board from CIB Vice President Pat Early, who has been in discussions with team officials about the financial problems both organizations face. Operating Conseco Fieldhouse costs the Pacers roughly $15 million a year. If the team can’t make those payments, it would fall to the CIB, which already is struggling with a budget shortfall of $20 million this year.”

small market, bad team with no real stars – the question is do they relocate or do the league contract?

They are paying out $70 million in payroll this year for a non-playoff team. That whole “bring in as many white guys as possible to compensate for the Artest melee” plan seems to have backfired on Larry Bird.

You can always have Tinsley stick up someone.

Things got awkward when Larry Bird confronted Marquis Daniels about the missing money.

will the league contract soon? so much for that european division

  • IndyB.

they are just trying to get the same type of deal with thier rent that the colts got with lucas oil stadium… The colts dont have to pay for the operating expenses and the pacers pay about 15 million a year… the people who will end up paying for this are the taxpayers of indiana… there will be no contraction this is merely a negotiation tactic by the simons during rough times to ensure that the team retains the pacers even after they no longer own it.

    city* not team

losing $30 mil this season? where the hell is the money going? can they really have that much overhead? get some auditors to review their books pronto!

Troy Murphy is a star? In my opnion, he certainly lacks that star quality. Nevertheless, here are a few ways to tell if Murph’s a star. Does he have signature kicks? Does he have any national endorsement deals? Do TNT or ESPN show Troy Murphy’s face when they are promoting upcoming games featuring the Pacers? I can’t say that I actually know the answers to these questions, but if all the answers are, “No,” then Murphy is no more of a star than your average slamonline poster.

Also, Larry Bird and Isiah Thomas should be consigned to the same level of hell, squirming in Lucifer’s left hand. Perhaps they occasionally could be let loose by Satan for the purpose of forcing each to coach a team assembled by the other.

Deep stuff Chinato. Danny Granger is an All-Star what are you talking about a team with no real stars. maybe stars but they have a star!

  • rav

cp34mvp – the pacers dont have stars in the way that reggie miller or jermaine o’neal circa 2003/4 were stars

Jess may be exaggerating a bit with his murphy comment, but he’s on the right track. Murphy is 3rd in the league in double doubles, just obliterated the pacers single season rebound record with 20ish games left, is shooting over 50 percent from 3 for awhile now, and has been our most consistent player (bc granger has been injured) if in a larger market, murphy would have gotten the same amount of all-star talk as david lee did, which was a decent amount. no body is talking about him, but pacers fans love him.

to help the Pacers, Miami will take Granger off your hands Indy… how about it….?
