John Paxson Explains the Value of Derrick Rose to His Coach

by Marcel Mutoni

Vinny Del Negro apparently needs someone to explain to him the obvious things in life. Such as the sheer awesomeness of his rookie point guard, and the benefits that he can provide to the team in the late stages of a game.

And that someone is his boss, John Paxson. From the Chicago Sun-Times:

Bulls general manager John Paxson has made it clear to coach Vinny Del Negro that rookie point guard Derrick Rose should be on the court at the end of games. ”I’ve talked to Vinny about this,” Paxson said Saturday during the WMVP-AM (1000) broadcast of the Bulls’ 105-102 victory over Houston, in which Rose scored 16 of his team-high 22 points in the fourth quarter. ”Our future is Derrick. That’s no secret. There are times that I feel — and Vinny knows this — that he should be on the floor at the end of games.”

Paxson’s remarks came after a week in which Rose was pulled late for Kirk Hinrich, a decision Del Negro defended at first, saying it was his to make as ”the decider.”

I love that Del Negro used a Bushism when explaining his rationale for playing Hinrich in favor of Rose late in a game.

Sorry, Vinny. Looks like the “deciding” is being done by someone else now.

I loved it when Jon Stewart did his “The Decider” schtick about Bush. Classic.

Oh, and Vinny is not a good coach.

Vinny took DRose out of a close game against the Nets in favor of Kirk Hinrich at about the six-minute mark in the fourth quarter. Terrible decision, in my opinion, because Devin Harris absolutely torched the Bulls after that. I asked Rose if he knew why he was sitting, and he too had no clue. Good to see Pax is talking some sense.

Del Negro is awful. And unrelated, but I really like Alvin Gentry. I think the Suns are gonna make a run.

What’s Del Negro smoking? It must be that good for him to think that Hinrich is a better finisher than Rose. I’ve not watched the Bulls much this season but the way Rose put it on the Rockets in the fourth quarter, there’s no excuse for him to be on the bench at the end of any game.

I kept screamin how I felt towards him the last time they were in Toyota Center…

USE ROSE LIKE PAUL, PLEASE!!!! Run the guy off the screens and free him up to get to the basket! This is crazy… Del Negro has problems, he doesn’t know how to use Rose at all.

Generally one does not save a guy for the playoffs if one’s team is a game back of the 8th seed.

if they fire Vinny and replace him with Eddie Jordan, i would be a happy person

Vinny was a better player than coach. The only thing that would’ve been worse is if MJ was in charge of drafting for the bulls last year. He wouldn’t have taken Rose at all.

Rose=Beast, idk how vinny doesnt know that

it sad to see hinrich as a no factor.

Alvin Gentry got lucky the Suns were playing horrible teams the first two games of his head coaching tenure. The Suns will continue to play capricious basketball without Amare to run the break. Also, Barbosa should really, really get more playing time.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

On topic: Derrick Rose IS the Chicago Bulls.

what the media failed to report in paxson’s conversation with vinny is how he punctuated his remark with a ‘negro please’.

  • airs

    duh.

Vinny should listen to Paxson, I don’t like the “defensive” attitude Vinny uses at the end of games, because it looses sight of playing to your strengths, which definitely are Rose and Gordon this season.

I cant figure out who this is…, somebodyu please… any true baskebtla fan would know…. !!! !ahhh

” Years ago, I heard about a short little shooter (whose name is not important) heading into the 10th grade. I went to watch him play at a basketball camp that featured nothing but top-rated players, 16 and under. Most observers thought he’d be overwhelmed by the talent.

He played well in his first game, but his team trailed by 9 with 50 seconds to go. However, he then made three consecutive 3-pointers, plus a steal, and suddenly the game was tied. We all stood slack-jawed at what had just happened. But the player acted as if he expected that ending.

Two years later, he led the nation in scoring (50 ppg) and was a McDonald’s All-American. Two years after that, as a college soph, he was a starter in the NCAA title game. The kid was easy to write off, but he just kept coming, because he knew he had “it.” Those of us who saw that last-minute performance knew he’d end up being a difference-maker.
