LeBron on Playing Alongside D-Wade

by Marcel Mutoni

No one enjoys discussing the summer of 2010 more than its biggest fish: LeBron James. He revels in the added attention it brings him, and loves messing with the press about it.

In town to play against the Nets, James was at it again. The AP reports:

James raised the possibility Sunday of the MVP candidates playing together somewhere after he was asked a question about the friendly rivalry between the U.S. Olympic teammates.

James was asked if he’d prefer they both stay in the same conference, so they could play against each other more often, or end up in different conferences, so they could compete against each other for championships.

“I don’t know, it doesn’t matter,” James said before the Cavaliers’ game against the Nets. “Whatever happens, we’ll go against each other, and maybe we’ll go against each other in practice. I don’t know, that’d be fun, wouldn’t it?”

James, of course, was just kidding around and proving yet again just how pointless this type of speculation is. Which, naturally, will only make things worse going forward. Nice.

I’ve been saying this since 2007.

  • MooButter

As long as their playing together for Cleveland, I’m all for it. Sorry Eboy.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    It could happen, Moo.

Mo is some where sweating this post

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Would that be the best duo in NBA history? I think that would be the first time two SUPER STARS played with each other in their PRIME outside of Michael and Pippen.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Ryan Jones

    Don’t forget about Chris Paul.

  • http://wherespmac.com Justin Adler

I’ve been saying this since 1997.

  • Zabba

This will be unprecedented. They should go for it.

  • http://www.twitter.com/mansonovic Andy

I’ve been saying this since 7 this morning.

  • L33tSauce

For the integrity of competition i say no. I would love to see the heat’s lineup be Chalmers, Wade, Lebron, Beasley, and (insert random D-leauge center here). Because regardless of a lack of a big man, the rest of the leauge would be in big trouble. Garnett Pierce and Allen got a championship all over 30 years old. Wade and Lebron are in their prime. It can’t happen. Plus it would make sports betting easy.

  • floe

I’ve been saying this for longer. F**k y’all!

  • http://www.irememberwaybackwhen.wordpress.com Eric Woodyard

No disrespect to Kobe and Shaq but they could be the best duo of all-time!

  • MooButter

Definately the best duo of all time. Without question, 2 of the top 3 guys in the league playing together in their prime? That team would have single digit losses on the season. I’m thinking you could count ‘em on one hand.

  • adasdasdasd

this duo ties with jordan and pippen… shaq and kobe.. stockton and malone

They are all a bunch of le$bians anyway. The real free agent prize is this summer: SEAN MAY

  • http://neworleansbasketball.blogspot.com Caleb

That would be a little too much ego for one team I think.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Wow. I can’t fully process Wade and LBJ on the same team. 5 in a row? Sorry, can you guys excuse me for a second before my mind explodes?

  • http://double-technical.blogspot.com Zee!

I’ve been saying this since Wade was at Marquette.

  • The Seed

They would get jealous of each other after a while, especially if Wade started to kill even more or people started to say that Lebron is carring the team. Read some notes about the Olympics, that Lebron was getting jealous of Kobe, because Kobe was getting all the attention, by the Chinese fans. Kobe was one of the most beloved people in China from the USA.

  • http://www.twitter.com/mansonovic Andy

These two would be on max contracts. Who would make up the rest of the starting five? Shawn Bradley, Robert Traylor and Matt Maloney?

  • Monkeyball

Could we cool the “best duo of all time” hyperbole? Jerry West and Elgin Baylor were two of the top three players in the League and they played together for almost a decade (including their respective prime years). No, they didn’t win a ring, but they took the Lakers to the NBA Finals seven times.
If the best duo is that which won the most titles then, without a doubt, the best duo in NBA history: Bill Russell and Sam Jones.

  • http://www.twitter.com/mansonovic Andy

Congratulations to The Seed for finding some way to mention Kobe in a LeBron article. Never saw that coming.

  • http://hoops4life.com overtime

wow, talk about getting excited over absolutely nothing

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Monkeyball: Jerry West and Elgin Baylor is actually the BEST example I can think of for a duo of players. Kareem and Oscar got together after Oscar’s prime and before Kareem’s. Shaq and Kobe were great but Kobe wasn’t at the top of his game. Chamberlain and West was good but both were too old to be considered as great.
I don’t know, Wade and Lebron is probably better than Jerry West and Elgin Baylor.

  • Michael

I’d agrue that athletically Kobe was in his prime. To this day he has never played better than he did in the 01 playoffs.

  • http://slamonline.com yknot

I’ve been saying this since Lebron was in 8th grade.

  • Michael

There is no way in hell you can say Wade and Lebron would be a better duo than Elgin and West. Thos eare two of the top ten players EVER. They went to 8 championships, i don’t think people give Elgin enough credit for how amazing he was.

  • Diogo

Michael, I don’t think you give Wade and James enough credit for how amazing there *are*. Fact is: if those two play together, it’ll be the “BEST DUO EVER” for the next two decades.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Michael: Maybe, but keep in mind I (like everyone who isn’t 60-years-old) have made my own mind about Elgin, and I guess I don’t think of him as highly as others. The MOMENT the dude retired, the Lakers won a championship. He was known as a ball-hog, and he had GREAT off the ball skills but still demanded a fair share of the offense. He also wasn’t known for his passing skills. Lebron, however, has none of those problems.
Since I believe Lebron is as good (or if not better) than Elgin, I guess it will all depend on how close Wade gets to West in terms of greatness.

  • Cizzo

Who’s going to take a pay cut?

  • https://twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

I’ve been saying this since Al Gore invented the internet.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBQEmmgDl9I Boing Dynasty

Neither of them would ever win an MVP being on the same team. I have a feeling they both want multipul. This wont happen.

  • Monkeyball

Jukai: I agree Lebron will retire as a better player than Baylor. And Wade may be as good as West.
I’d also like tpo point out that West and Baylor (along with Magic and Kareem) faced much stiffer competition than Jordan/Pippen or Kobe/Shaq. I’m old enough to remember when the Bulls were being downplayed by experts because they didn’t have a true opponent at their level. Doubly so for the Shaq-Kobe Lakers, who played some of the most lopsided finals in history and, may I add, lost to a vastly inferior Pistons team in ’04.

  • person

LBJ and Wade in 2010 wit NY

  • sho nuf

This will never happen; Lebron always teases about future opportunities. Kinda the reason why this whole Knicks thing came to life.

Another thing: how come almost no one here mentions Magic and Kareem with the greatest duos? Five rings, four MVPs and a dynasty between who I believe are both players in the top 5 all time. By far the best duo (sorry Shaq + Kobe).

  • http://twentythreenine.blogspot.com Russ Bengtson

Comparing two guys who will most likely never be on the same team ever to actual all-time great duos is awesome.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

I’ll raise your Magic and Kareem with my Michael and Scottie.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Well….for winning history at least.

  • sho nuf

I would agree but Scottie isn’t even a top 10 player. Top 50 perhaps, but even Michael’s number one spot can’t compensate enough.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Scottie’s got to be top 25.

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Scottie Pippen in his season without MJ: 22 points, 8.7 rebounds, 5.2 assists, an outstanding 3 steals, and a block a game. Top 25 at least.

  • http://www.manutd.com Z

Those stats are nice but not THAT special. A lot guys can give you 22-9-5… Hell, that’s about C-Webb’s career avgs..

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Yeah….the 6 titles kind of make that a non-comparison, Z.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

  • Teddy-the-Bear

I’m not so sure Scottie Pippen is a top 25 player, sorry guys! He’s the man, but not THE man.
Granted, Scottie and Michael is probably the greatest duo of all time.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

The greatest backcourt duo of all time is Clyde Frazier and Earl the Pearl.

  • Teddy-the-Bear

Also, one of my favorite duos is Starks and Ewing.
    f*ck the Bulls! :D

  • http://lacuevacrosscountry.com Slick Nick Da Ruler

LeBron & Wade are too greedy to give up max money. Its silly, because 16-20 MIL per year is pocket change compared to the endorsement deals, buisness networking, and branding that would occur if they were teammates. For a wannabe that wants to be a Billion dollar athlete, you’d think LeBron have more business savvy. Oh wait, his business advisors are childhood friends. Not exactly the sharpest businessmen around.

  • EC

Ive been saying this since 1987

  • L33tSauce

Pippen is atleast top 30, more like top 25. And Chris Webber was a beast, but for teams that could never make it. Pippen put up those kinda numbers on a title team. No duo beats Jordan and Pippen. Now Wade and Lebron would def top it though…

  • truthteller

If Scottie Pippen in his prime were playing today, he would be the best player in the L. Easy!

  • Rob Wells Jr.

    They’d get championships every year

  • http://ittakesanationofmillionstoholdthissac.blogspot.com ciolkstar

Terrible idea. Unless they can convonce the league to let them use two basketballs simultaneously during the game.

  • sho nuf

I might give Scottie top 25, I always saw him as more of a 30-35 player to me. whatever, still one of the best small forwards to ever play. Sticking with Magic and Kareem though

  • Don

Slick Nick Da Ruler , WORD.

yup. imagine the endorsements that they would make TOGETHER.
But, then again, who can afford to pay both WADE and LBJ in an endorsement?

  • L33tSauce

You all don’t take in their competitive factor. Both f them share the ball, both care more about winning than anything. We aren’t talking about Kobe or Amare here.

  • http://nba.com dwadeforever

i’ve been saying this since i was 2 years old…now im 2 and a half

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

You know what, Lebron & Wade together, if it ever ever happens, could very possibly be the most dangerous duo of ALL TIME. They could definitely give MJ and Pip a run for their money.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

They already proved they can coexist on the Dream Team. I know it’s easy to get giddy on the hyperbole and the hypothetical, but what a prospect.

  • DruWil

I can’t even see that happening in my dream… That would be just too sick.

  • DJR

This is never going to happen. It just wouldn’t be fair, it would be too big. Too much to handle. And to all these people rippin on Pippen, dude played 17 years and averaged 16ppg, 6reb & 5 ast. Compare that to “one of the best all-time” in Dr. J and he was only 22, 6 & 4 – so Pip isn’t that far off. And Pips got 6, just a few more than Julius.

  • larrylegend

never to be happened, maybe in 10years, if lbj tries to make a last run at a first chip;).

  • http://www.twitter.com/mansonovic Andy

You all know LeBron and Dwyane are having a good laugh at the furore they’re causing right now.

  • jay

I like tim and mich…forget mully for a moment.

  • larrylegend

lol, and lbj will move to pf/c as during 2008 bejing?
one of the main reasons, lbj/wade are considered top 5 players is the fact, nba rules are offense friendly…every 2nd drive to the hole would be an offensiv foul for both…

  • nerd man 123456789

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

I really get confused by people like Ciolkstar. You do know that they both average over seven assists, right?

  • http://sfdjilf.com Jukai

Also, I totally forgot about the Rolls Royce duo (Clyde and the Pearl). I wish I was old enough to see those two play together…

  • Stu

I’m actually surprised that more NBA superstars don’t take less $ and team up with other superstars. If they are all about winning championships why not take less money and join forces and win championships. I’m sure endorsement money they would be getting because they are winning championships would help make up for what they aren’t getting paid by the team. Imagine LeBron staying in Cleveland. Dwyane opting out of his contract and signing with Cleveland. Bring in Joe Johnson to help run the point. Marcus Camby at your 4 and a old but reliable Shaq playing the Center. If they could all swallow their pride and take less money why couldn’t this happen. In todays age though this would never happen. Not with everyone trying to get their money. Nice dream though.

  • CHE

yea and how about throwing melo in the mix. And all live happily ever after..lol This will never happen. Ridunkulous!

  • matt

luckely this is a teamsport and not a 2man show …..

  • jerry west

i’ve been saying this since 1947!
